After a decade, this scandal was uncovered, but it was not the last of Desmarest's woes! A few years later, he fell in love with one of his pupils, who also happened to be the daughter of a wealthy and powerful man who managed to get the composer sentenced to death, forcing Desmarest to spend the rest of his days in exile. This year, Khyam Allami will be collaborating with, and learning from, one of the biggest stars of Middle Eastern music, the Iraqi singer and guitarist Ilham Al Madfai. The project culminates in a BBC Promenade concert in August. In this programme, Khyam Allami presents a broad picture of contemporary Middle Eastern music, which has one of the world's most vibrant musical industries, by focusing on three of its centres - the capital cities of Lebanon, Syria and Jordan.

SAT 18:00 Opera on 3 (b00sq42p)
Janacek's Katya Kabanova

Among the more remarkable stories of reinvigorated old age is the miracle of Leos Janacek's creative Indian summer. Its cause was the Czech composer's passion for the already married Kamila Stösslová: they met when he was in his mid-sixties and she was nearly forty years his junior. But despite - or perhaps because of - the fact that it was a largely one-sided affair on his part, he poured his passion into the music he wrote in the last decade of his life and created a series of undoubted masterpieces, including the first of his four late operas, Katya Kabanova. It tells the tragic story of a woman trapped in a loveless marriage, stifled by provincial society -and the mother-in-law from hell. Katya has her brief moment of extra-marital passion which inexorably leads to her suicide.

The pared-down intensity of Janacek's opera with its short, terse, scenes was echoed in director David Alden's acclaimed production, with American soprano Patricia Racette, making her English National Opera debut in the title role. Tenor Stuart Skelton (who made such an impression as Peter Grimes last season at ENO) plays Katya's lover - the man who seems to be in the right place at the right time, and who disappears rather too quickly and easily - and Susan Bickley is the mother in law you're glad you don't have.

Before the opera begins, Martin Handley discusses its themes and origins with Mike Ashman.

SAT 22:00 Between the Ears (b00nnzmb)
Salvado

The story of a remarkable encounter between Spanish monks and the native inhabitants of Western Australia in the mid 19th Century.

In 1846 Spanish bishop, Rosendo Salvado arrived in the Australian outback to establish New Norcia, a Benedictine monastery. Despite the intention of the mission to bring salvation to the "savages", records show that Salvado's interest and respect for the indigenous Nyangara, though patronising, was truly enlightened for the time.
This programme reveals Salvado's views on the Nyangara people, customs, and music, as documented in his memoirs. We also hear reconstructions of the Aboriginal New Norcia String Orchestra, Brass Band, and Choir. The programme features the sounds of the bush and the acoustics of the New Norcia monastery.

SUN 11:30 The BBC's Big Concert (b00sq48s)
Live from Salford

A day of live music making from all over the UK, featuring the five BBC Orchestras, the BBC Singers and the Ulster Orchestra. With performances from Bach to Bartok and beyond, plus behind-the-scenes features on the orchestras' community work and their exciting plans for the future. Beginning with:

BBC Philharmonic at St Philip's Church, Salford.
Presented by Petroc Trelawny

As the BBC Philharmonic prepares to move to its neighbouring base in Salford Quays over the next year, the Orchestra is in Sir Robert Smirke's Greek-style designed church in Salford. Nicholas Kraemer conducts the Orchestra and the Manchester Chamber Choir in two of Bach's finest Cantatas: the intimate No 159 which showcases the inspiring bass aria "Es ist vollbracht", and the ambitious No 21, "Ich hatte viel Bekümmernis", which moves from darkness to a blazing final chorus. Between them, a profound symphony by Haydn which is perhaps more appropriate to this sacred setting than to the concert hall.

Bach: Cantata no. 159 (BWV.159) "Sehet, wir geh'n hinauf gen Jerusalem"
Haydn: Symphony no. 26 (H.1.26) in D minor "Lamentatione"
Bach: Cantata no. 21 (BWV.21) "Ich hatte viel Bekummernis"
Julia Doyle, soprano
Tove Dahlberg, mezzo soprano
Nicholas Mulroy, tenor
Halvor Festervoll Melein, bass
Manchester Chamber Choir;
Nicholas Kraemer, conductor

During the concert there is an opportunity to take a closer look at the Orchestra's learning and outreach work as it gathers momentum ahead of the move to Salford, and to meet members of the recently-created Salford Family Orchestra. Plus interviews with Salford-based composer Alan Williams who worked extensively to create a new choral work that reflects a twenty-first century take on the true creation of the universe.

SUN 13:00 The BBC's Big Concert (b00sq48v)
Live from London

BBC Symphony Orchestra at Maida Vale Studios, London
Presented by Sara Mohr-Pietsch

Three key aspects of the BBC Symphony Orchestra's work are reflected in this programme. First, Dvorak's thrilling Scherzo Capriccioso represents the orchestra's commitment to the core Czech repertoire, which it has been performing, broadcasting and recording in authoritative readings under its Chief Conductor, Jiri Belohlavek, over the past four years.

Mozart's tuneful Exsultate Jubilate features former New Generation Artist Ailish Tynan as soloist. The Orchestra is committed to fostering young talent and over the past decade has helped Radio 3 New Generation Artists gain vital experience, launching them on starry international careers.

Foerster's Fourth Symphony, his orchestral masterpiece, reflects the Orchestra's exploration of the more unusual corners of the Czech repertoire. It gained its subtitle "Easter" after the composer wrote that he started composing it on Good Friday 1904 'deeply moved by the spirit of Holy Week'. This colourful 20th century work - whilst popular in its homeland - is rarely heard outside the Czech Republic and demonstrates the Orchestra's dedication to introducing new and neglected music to its audiences.

Dvorak: Scherzo capriccioso (Op.66)
Mozart: Exsultate, jubilate - motet for soprano and orchestra (K.165)
Foerster: Symphony no. 4 (Op.54) in C minor "Easter" (London Premiere)
Ailish Tynan, soprano
Jiri Belohlavek, conductor

In the short interval, there will be a chance to find out more about the Orchestra's fostering of talent - young and not so young. The Total Immersion days this season explored the music of three living composers: George Crumb, Hans Werner Henze and Wolfgang Rihm. The Orchestra's Learning Projects involved students of performance and composition from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and - coming together for a special George Crumb event - amateur musicians aged six to eighty from a range of different institutions and backgrounds.

SUN 14:30 The BBC's Big Concert (b00sq4dd)
Live from Glasgow

BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra at City Halls, Glasgow
Presented by Jamie MacDougall

The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra plays a 75th Birthday programme close to its heart. The music of Sibelius has been important to the Orchestra ever since the composer sent a telegram to its founding conductor, Ian Whyte, saying that the broadcast of his Second Symphony was the first time he had heard it properly. Korngold's romantic Violin Concerto is played by one of the Orchestra's favourite visiting soloists, Ilya Gringolts, and there is a UK premiere from local composer Sally Beamish. Her piece is dedicated to Sir Peter Maxwell Davies in his 75th year - a composer who has had a long association with the Orchestra, particularly at the festival he founded in Orkney. It also represents the Orchestra's ongoing commitment to championing new music. The programme finishes with music by Bartok, who loved Glasgow and the Scottish folk music traditions which mirror his use of Hungarian Folk Music. His music has been championed by the Orchestra, particularly during the last ten years under the tenure of its previous chief conductor. This celebratory concert is conducted by Scottish-born Garry Walker.

Sibelius: Finlandia (Op.26)
Korngold: Violin Concerto (Op.35) in D major
Sally Beamish: A Cage of Doves (UK Premiere)
Bartok: The Miraculous Mandarin Suite (Sz.73)

Ilya Gringolts (violin)
Garry Walker (conductor)

During the concert, there is a chance to hear about some of the Orchestra's wide-ranging outreach work in the communities of Scotland, including Sistema Scotland based in Stirling, which is using music to build a strong society. Plus a report from the "come and sing" Mozart Requiem for the people of Glasgow and the wider area which took place yesterday as part of the Orchestra's "Listen Here" Weekend of open doors. And a number of key individuals explain what the orchestra has meant, and still means to them as it reaches its 75th Birthday year. Composers Sir Peter Maxwell Davis and Sally Beamish will also join the Orchestra live in City Halls Glasgow to talk about the UK premiere of Sally's piece.

SUN 17:00 The BBC's Big Concert (b00sq4l8)
Live from Cardiff

BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales at BBC Hoddinott Hall, Cardiff.
Presented by Sarah Walker

A concert from the BBC National Orchestra of Wales' new home at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff Bay. French music has featured strongly in Principal Conductor Thierry Fischer's programming with the Orchestra over the past four years, and it's at the heart of this programme too. Unbridled imagination and a passion for Shakespeare fired Berlioz to write his dramatic overture, written in a burst of energy in just three weeks. Shakespeare is also the subject of Massenet's suite - three short symphonic poems on the subjects of Ariel, Desdemona and Macbeth. And Ravel's La Valse, written for Diaghilev, conjures up a vivid and violent picture of pre-First World War Viennese ballrooms.

Naturally, Welsh music is central to the activities of the Orchestra and Chorus, and Adrian Partington conducts a jubilant Psalm of praise by William Mathias. Contemporary music is also important in the Orchestra's life, and for the opening of this new hall, Composer in Association Simon Holt has created a short work in honour of St. Vitus, patron saint of actors, comedians and dancers - among others.

Berlioz: King Lear Overture (Op.4)
Simon Holt: St. Vitus in the kettle
Massenet: Suite No.3 "Scenes dramatiques"*
Mathias: Psalm 150 "Laudate Dominum" for chorus and orchestra (Op.44/1)*
Ravel: La Valse
BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales;
Thierry Fischer, conductor
Adrian Partington, conductor*

During the concert Sarah Walker talks to Thierry Fischer as he looks forward to the BBC Proms and his artistic vision for the Orchestra's new season. Simon Holt explains what it's like to work closely with the Orchestra and how it influences his music. Adrian Partington discusses the important role the Chorus plays on the platform alongside the Orchestra - and deeper into the community in Wales. And animateur Andy Pidcock, who is a workshop leader with the Education and Community Department of the Orchestra, describes an upcoming project taking the Orchestra to work with special needs children throughout Wales.

SUN 18:30 The BBC's Big Concert (b00sq4lb)
Live from Plymouth

BBC Concert Orchestra at Plymouth Pavilions.
Presented by Ian Skelly.

As the UK's most versatile orchestra, the BBC Concert Orchestra has long been at the heart of British music, promoting the quality and craftsmanship of composers who form an indispensible part of British culture and character.

Conducted by MGM Prom star John Wilson, the programme's theme is Best of British and takes its inspiration from the West Country, with Malcolm Arnold's Four Cornish Dances and music from Dorset composer Peter Hope. Not forgetting Plymouth's long history as a naval city, there's also Lady Barbara from Robert Farnon's Captain Horatio Hornblower Suite, and the concert ends with Vaughan Williams' Sea Songs.

The Orchestra is joined by star of stage and screen, the larger-than-life Brian Blessed, to narrate Paul Patterson's musical retelling of Roald Dahl's magnificent Three Little Pigs, during which audiences will have a unique opportunity to join in live on BBC Radio 3, as together they'll huff, and puff, and blow the house down!

And finally, soprano Sophie-Louise Dann recalls the heady days of light music with a selection from and Noel Coward.

Coates: Merrymakers Overture
Peter Hope: Kaleidoscope
Robert Farnon: Lady Barbara from the Hornblower Suite
Paul Patterson: Three Little Pigs
Arnold: Four Cornish Dances (Op.91)
Delius: A Song of Summer

Vaughan Williams: Sea Songs

Brian Blessed, narrator,
Sophie-Louise Dann, soprano,
John Wilson, conductor

In March this year the Orchestra went on a tour of the East of England playing to over seven thousand young people, and a further three hundred had the opportunity to be on stage with the Orchestra and have coaching from BBC musicians. The project is running again tomorrow in the Plymouth Pavilions, with around four thousand students from Devon and Cornwall.

SUN 20:00 The BBC's Big Concert (b00sq4ld)
BBC Singers - Live from London

BBC Singers at St Paul's Knightsbridge.
Presented by Christopher Cook

The BBC Singers have the largest and broadest repertoire of any professional choral group, and their programme at St Paul's shows their versatility, spanning four hundred years of the choral repertoire, beginning with William Byrd's Mass - one of the sacred masterpieces of the Tudor period, conducted by Chief Conductor David Hill. Then Principal Guest Conductor Bob Chilcott conducts three works composed by the Singers' Associate Composers over the last six years, plus a piece of his own - which requires audience participation! And to conclude the concert, David Hill directs three choral classics which were commissioned for and premiered by the BBC Singers in the 1940s. Tippett's The Weeping Babe and Britten's Shepherd's Carol are amongst the group's earliest commissions - composed for a programme called A Poet's Christmas which was broadcast in 1944. And Poulenc's monumental wartime cantata for unaccompanied voices, composed as a hymn to freedom in occupied France during the summer of 1943 was given its first performance a few months later by the BBC Singers in the Concert Hall of Broadcasting House. It is one of the most thrilling and powerful works in the entire choral repertoire.

Byrd: Mass for five voices
Gabriel Jackson: To Music*
Judith Bingham: Water Lilies*
Edward Cowie: Lyre-Bird Motet*
Bob Chilcott - I am the song (with audience participation)*
Britten: A Shepherd's Carol
Tippett: The Weeping Babe
Poulenc: Figure Humaine
David Hill, conductor;
Bob Chilcott, conductor*

In the two intervals in the concert, there is a montage of reminiscences from the Singers' activities over nearly 90 years of their history, and a bird's-eye-view of the group's present-day outreach and learning initiatives - which include projects with children, young professional conductors and composers, and the amateur choral community at large.

SUN 21:30 The BBC's Big Concert (b00sq4lg)
Live from Belfast

Ulster Orchestra at Ulster Hall, Belfast.
Presented by Petroc Trelawny.

The Ulster Orchestra, founded in 1966, is Northern Ireland's only full time orchestra. It promotes its own international season and twenty BBC concerts each year in the Ulster Hall. These range from exploring lesser known classical works, to premiering new works by local composers, from educational concerts to community concerts, and from providing debut opportunities for young musicians to staging the biggest classical music party of the year: Proms in the Park.

Tonight's concert features a new work - a Radio 3 commission for guitar and orchestra entitled Roots. Written by the young Irish composer Ciaran Farrell, it combines classical, folk and pop elements in an orchestral concerto context, and highlights the versatility of the orchestra. This contrasts with the fine lines of Prokofiev's Classical Symphony and the sense of place inherent in Copland's Appalachian Spring, and the concert ends in true Ulster fashion with one of the loveliest of Irish airs.

Prokofiev: Symphony No.1 (Op.25) in D major "Classical"
Ciaran Farrell: Roots for Guitar and Orchestra (Radio 3 Commission and World Premiere)
Copland: Appalachian Spring
Joan Trimble: The Boyne Water
Craig Ogden, guitar;
David Porcelijn, conductor.

During breaks in the concert several features illustrate the range of work which the Orchestra has undertaken this year, including the Sonorities Festival of Contemporary Music, the Brian Irvine Education project The Pied Piper, Come and Play - a scheme with the Ulster Orchestra and Ulster Youth Orchestra performing together - and Rain Falling Up, an education project for four hundred school children and seventy senior citizens. And finally, a team from the orchestra go head to head with the audience in a light hearted music quiz.

MON 12:00 Composer of the Week (b00sq4wp)
Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767)

Episode 1

During his long and remarkably prolific life, Georg Philipp Telemann was recognised as the leading German composer of the Baroque era, whose reputation in his time, was even greater than that of his compatriot, JS Bach. He wrote a wealth of innovative music for the church, court, opera house, concert hall and private home. Telemann was an astute business man too, in tune with the changing tastes of his time. He made music more widely available by putting on regular series of public concerts and publishing collections of his own works for anyone willing and able to buy.

Telemann broke new ground with the dramatic nature of his church cantatas in a move to make them more palatable to the congregation. They were hugely successful and could be heard far and wide across Germany in years to come. As a court composer in Sorau and Eisenach, he began writing fashionable French overtures and a constant stream of instrumental music.

In the first programme, Donald Macleod features some of this early music, including a church cantata set to a text by the foremost cantata poet of the time, a concerto for four violins and an orchestral suite which draws on the popular figures of the commedia dell'arte.

MON 13:00 Radio 3 Lunchtime Concert (b00sq4wr)

Presented by Fiona Talkington.

Anne McElvoy talks to Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist Lorraine Adams about her new novel, The Room and The Chair. The Room of the title is the buzzing newsroom of the capital's paper, drawing on Adams' own experience as a staff reporter for The Washington Post, and taking in the military, the halls of political power and international espionage.

Francis Alys is a Belgian artist whose works include When Faith Moves Mountains, in which he and 500 Peruvians moved a dune by digging sand, and pushing a block of ice around Mexico City until it melted. Rachel Campbell Johnston assesses a major new exhibition of his work at the Tate Modern.

Wendy Buonaventura, the critically acclaimed choreographer who has pioneered the development of Arabic dance as a theatre art in the West talks about her new book, Serpent of the Nile.

And is the move we made 10,000 years ago to drop the hunter gathering lifestyle, become sedentary and start cultivating crops to blame for many of the problems facing humanity today? So argues Spencer Wells, geneticist and explorer in residence at the National Geographic Society. From social and sexual inequalities to disease, depression and religious fanaticism. All these woes Wells blames on the folly of our Neolithic ancestors. Evolutionary anthropologist Ruth Mace joins him in studio to discuss.

TUE 21:15 Night Waves (b00sq57s)
Jonathan Fenby, Sarah Dunant, Tudor Parfitt

Rana Mitter talks to Jonathan Fenby about his new book, 'The General: Charles de Gaulle and the France he saved', published on the 70th anniversary of the speech which began the French Resistance, an anniversary which will be marked by a visit to London by President Sarkozy.

The winner of a new prize in the name of the man seen as the father of historical fiction, Walter Scott, is announced this weekend. Rana talks to Sarah Dunant, one of the shortlisted authors, the novelist James Meek, biographer Anna Whitelock and academic Jonathan Sawday about the state of historical fiction. How has the new academic focus on the margins of history changed the way novelists can write about the past? And what are the rights and wrongs of putting fictional words in the mouths of real people as Hilary Mantel did in her Booker Prize winning 'Wolf Hall'?

Also in the programme, the historian Tudor Parfitt argues that new research demonstrates that it's possible to trace the origins of the people of the Jewish Diaspora, through their DNA, to a group of communuties in the Levant.

Rewiring the Mind

The Cultivated Mind

The historian of broadcasting, David Hendy, explores the ways in which the electronic media have shaped the modern mind.

How effective were the efforts of the BBC to improve the 'public mind' between the wars? Did broadcasts such as W.B. Yeats's poetry recitals or E.M. Forster's talks foster ideas of a 'spiritual democracy' and an enlightened citizenry?

Producer: Matt Thompson.

WED 19:00 Performance on 3 (b00sq5fv)
The first of two concerts this week of Beethoven string quartets given by the Takacs Quartet. These are the final concerts of their acclaimed complete Beethoven cycle. In this programme, the music includes one of the Opus 59 set dedicated to the Russian Count Razumovsky, a masterpiece which expands the form of the string quartet and explores new spiritual depths. Opus 130, written twenty years later, includes a monumental fugal finale that is considered one of Beethoven's towering achievements. However, at the time of the premiere it was such an unprecendented piece of work that Beethoven hid in a local tavern while the performance was given in a nearby house to a small private audience. All the movements were warmly applauded except for the Grosse Fuge, which met with bemused silence. Beethoven's publisher persuaded him to write a shorter last movement, and only in the 20th century was the mighty fugue recognised as the crowning conclusion of this great quartet.

Presented by Martin Handley.

Through a Glass Darkly, Nell Irvin Painter, Absent Fathers, Cornelia Parker

Philip Dodd with a first night theatre review of Ingmar Bergman's 'Through a Glass Darkly', adapted by Jenny Worton and starring Ruth Wilson. The only one of Bergman's films for which he gave permission for a stage adaptation 'Through a Glass Darkly' won the Oscar for Best Foreign Film in 1962.

In her new book, 'The History of White People' the African American writer Nell Irvin Painter argues that race is an idea, not a fact, and investigates theories of 'whiteness' from antiquity through the Enlightenment to present day American politics and culture and asks - what does 'white' mean in contemporary America?

A new season on BBC4 explores fatherhood. The novelist Andrew Martin and the children's writer Michael Rosen discuss the significance of the absent father in literature.

And there's an interview with the artist Cornelia Parker whose new show, 'Doubtful Sound', opens this week at the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Arts in Gateshead.

THU 21:15 Night Waves (b00sq5qp)
A bout de souffle, Sally Mann, Leonora Carrington, Permissive Society

It's the 50th anniversary of Jean-Luc Godard's 'A Bout de Souffle' - 'Breathless' - one of the first films of the French New Wave. With its jump cut style of editing, naturalistic dialogue with mistakes left in and its jazz soundtrack, 'Breathless' heralded a new kind of cinema. But, as the film is rereleased on its 50th birthday, how do we see it today?

Described by Time Magazine in 2001 as 'America's best photographer' Sally Mann's work has often caused controversy. Her series of photographs of her children pictured naked even led to accusations of child pornography. Anne Karpf joins Matthew to review a new exhibition of Mann's work which includes the photographs of her children, landscapes of her native Virginia and a new series of portraits of dead bodies.

A look at one of the last surviving surrealist artists from pre-war Paris. A contemporary of Picasso, Dali, Duchamp and Miro, Leonora Carrington has never been well known in this country, but a new exhibition in Chichester brings her work together with two of her fellow female surrealists. Richard Cork talks to Night Waves about the 'Surreal Friends'.

And a new book 'Capital Affairs' explores the connections between sex and social power in the 1950s, and suggests that the beginnings of the permissive society began, not in the 1960s, but in the culture and austerity of post-war London; its author, Frank Mort, and writer and director Neil Bartlett join Matthew Sweet to discuss London's sexual geography and influence on Britain.

Rewiring the Mind

The Fallible Mind

The historian of broadcasting, David Hendy, explores the ways in which the electronic media have shaped the modern mind.
Two seminal TV programmes: the American drama Marty, broadcast in 1953, and the BBC's Face-to-Face, from 1960, used unflinching close-ups to reveal human beings as flawed individuals. Did they make us more compassionate - or just more obsessed with the private lives of others?

Producer Matt Thompson.

FRI 19:00 Performance on 3 (b00sq5tx)
Schumann, Mozart, Brahms

Part 1

Live from St Paul's Knightsbridge in London, Martin Handley presents a concert culminating with Brahms's A German Requiem. Composed after the death of his mother, this is one of Brahms's greatest works and, with its themes of consolation and comfort, a piece often described as a Requiem for the living, rather than the dead. Here it's performed in Brahms's arrangement for piano duet, which brings an intimacy to this magisterial piece. The programme also includes music by Brahms's musical mentor Schumann, and Mozart's much-loved fantasia - originally conceived as a piece for musical clock.

Schumann: Four Songs for Double Chorus Op.141
Mozart: F minor Fantasy for piano duet K.608
Brahms: Geistliches Lied

BBC Singers conducted by David Hill
Stephen Betteridge and Richard Pearce (piano duet).

FRI 19:40 Twenty Minutes (b00sq5tz)
Denglisch No More?

Award-winning German broadcasters Thomas Franke and Gesine Dornbluth explore the seemingly unstoppable rising tide of English language being used today in German, and recent - not entirely successful - attempts to mount a resistance.

When Deutsche Bahn, the German railway operator, announced in February that no longer would their stations have "Kiss and Ride Zones" or offer a "Call-a-Bike" service, it became a minor international news item. Because, for generations now, contemporary German has become littered with forms of English words. And they're not just those ubiquitous neologisms such as "Handy" for mobile phone and "Beamer" for projector. Says Thomas "in daily German you find a "dating agentur", where "singles" are looking for partners, um ein "Date" zu haben. If they are successful they maybe have a "candlelightdinner" and later they hopefully practise "safer sex". In the morning they go to the "Back shop" around the corner to buy bread." And, he adds, when he recently called someone at the topically Germanising Deutsche Bahn, his secretary regretted that he was "in einem Meeting". So much for new German brooms.

Producer Simon Elmes.

FRI 21:15 The Verb (b00sq5v3)
Billy Collins, Elaine Feinstein, John Kinsella, Verb Poetic Problems

Ian McMillan presents Radio 3's cabaret of the word, featuring an interview with former American poet laureate Billy Collins on how he confronted the challenge of writing commemorative poetry, particularly for 9/11 and why his poetry is concerned with his life in the present, rather than past traumas.

Poet and author Elaine Feinstein discusses her new collection of poetry, "Cities", a history of her life through the cities she has visited and the poets she has met, including such luminaries as Janos Pilinszky and Miroslav Holub.

A brand new verse drama - The Signature at Ludlow - written specially for the Verb by Australian writer and environmental activist John Kinsella. The drama explores a murder and a massacre of indigenous Australian people known about by John's own early pioneer forebears, whilst exploring issues of landscape and language.

Andin the latest of the "Verb Poetic Problems", Sean O'Brien and Simon Barraclough explore their relationship to the audience. Is the audience a source of inspiration or consternation?

FRI 23:15 World on 3 (b00sq5v7)
Tony McManus

Mary Ann Kennedy with music from across the globe, plus a session with Scots - Canadian guitarist Tony McManus.

Tony McManus has been acclaimed as 'the finest guitarist Scotland has ever produced' and 'the Jeff Beck of the acoustic guitar'. He is currently on a rare visit to the UK from his home in Canada, but it was before his move that he made his reputation in Scotland, playing in the lively session scene in Glasgow and Edinburgh. He has cultivated his own 'Celtic' style of guitar playing, which reflects all the phrasing and ornaments of traditional Scots pipe or fiddle music.
