Thomas Ades Interview

His dazzling and communicative operas - on the scandalous life-story of the Duchess of Argyll and Shakespeare's The Tempest - are performed all over the world. His orchestral works and solo pieces are in the repertoire of performers from conductor Simon Rattle to cellist Steven Isserlis, but he has not given a full-length interview for British radio in many years. Today's Music Matters is devoted to a conversation with Adès in his home town, London: a revelation of the mystery and magic of a composer at the height of his powers.

Joe Henderson

Joe Henderson was one of the finest tenor saxophonists in jazz. Fellow saxophonist Julian Siegel joins Alyn Shipton to assess Henderson's catalogue of discs from his early Blue Note days to his final triumphs playing the music of Strayhorn and Jobim. The programme also includes part of an archive interview with Henderson.

Joe Henderson's career falls into two distinct parts, his early days as a young lion, recording with the cream of 1960s modern jazz players for Blue Note, and his remarkable comeback after his celebrated trio disc "The State of the Tenor" in 1985, which led to a new international touring career. He discusses this later stage of his career with Alyn Shipton in a Radio 3 interview from the mid-1990s and the rest of his catalogue is assessed by Julian Siegel, a frequent UK poll winner who has been greatly influenced by Henderson.

SAT 18:00 Opera on 3 (b00sdr4s)
Rossini's Il Turco in Italia

Ivan Hewett presents Il Turco in Italia - Rossini's perceptive comedy of Neapolitan life and love, recorded at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden in April. A Turkish Prince, Selim, arrives in Naples by boat, looking for an amorous adventure. At the same time, the respectable Don Geronio is struggling to keep his younger wife, Fiorilla, happy. She is more interested in flirting with the young men around her, and she is immediately drawn to the exotic young Turk. Meanwhile, the poet Prosdocimo is trying to find a subject for a new play, and he decides to stir things up in the name of theatre, especially when he discovers Zaida, a young gypsy girl who was jilted by a prince in Turkey, and Don Narciso, the previous lover of Fiorilla, now usurped by Selim.

Rossini's lively vocal ensembles sparkle with desire, frustration, jealousy, and love. In this production, updated to the 1960s, this is all played out at the beach in Naples complete with pasta, wine, Italian cars, a Vespa, and a masked ball.

With additional insights during the interval from writer and broadcaster Daniel Snowman, and members of the cast, the conductor Maurizio Benini, and the directors, Moshe Leiser and Patrice Caurier.

"Other mothers never spend the day watching Spongebob."

"Other mothers get what one of those days is."

The result is a dark, funny radio poem which explores our deepest divides - and our brightest areas of unity.

John Adams

US composer John Adams talks to Michael Berkeley about the music that makes him tick.
The Pulitzer-Prize-winning American composer John Adams is one of the world's most successful contemporary composers. His best-known works, often on contemporary or controversial subject-matter, include the operas 'Nixon in China', based on Richard Nixon's epoch-making 1972 meeting with the Chinese leader Mao Tse Tung; 'The Death of Klinghoffer', about the terrorist hijacking of the cruise liner Achille Lauro and the murder of an elderly American passenger; and Doctor Atomic (2005), which deals with Robert Oppenheimer and the building of the first US atomic bomb. His 2002 choral piece 'On the Transmigration of Souls' commemorates the victims of the 9/11 attacks; while his minimalist orchestral and ensemble works, such as 'Shaker Loops', 'The Chairman Dances' and 'A Short Ride in a Fast Machine' have entered the contemporary repertoire and earned him a wide international audience.

His own musical tastes encompass popular American masterpieces such as Sousa's 'The Stars and Stripes Forever', Duke Ellington's 'The Tattooed Bride' and the Beach Boys' 'Good Vibrations' as well as a series of extraordinary works written towards the end of composers' lives: a late Beethoven string quartet; Schubert's last great piano sonata; Hagen's monologue from Act One of Wagner's opera 'Gotterdammerung', and Debussy's elusive ballet score 'Jeux'.

SUN 13:00 The Early Music Show (b00sbc1h)
French Airs de Cour

Catherine Bott indulges in the delights of the Air de Cour or renaissance French Court Song, a hugely influential kind of music with a distinctive and individual atmosphere. The Airs de Cour developed in the mid 16th century from a madrigalian form of word setting - one featuring several, unaccompanied voices - into a song, more typically for solo voice with lute accompaniment. Unlike the famous lute songs in England, which appeared at about the same time, from the likes of John Dowland and Thomas Campion, the French songs have their own unique musical and poetic quality. They were hugely popular at the French court, even though their model was often drawn from the popular, Parisian street music of the day.

Airs de Cour were prevalent between 1570 and 1650, during which time they fragmented and developed into several different types, reflecting a variety of subjects in their texts. Eventually these songs paved the way for a technique of word setting that put in motion the creation of French opera.

In this programme, which forms part of a weekend of Early Music Show's focusing on music from renaissance France, Catherine Bott looks at the background to the genre, and examines the different emerging types of song, with examples from CD featuring composers such as Pierre Guedron, Etienne Moulinié, Gabriel Bataille, Antoine Boesset and Jacques du Buisson.

SUN 21:30 Sunday Feature (b00sbc1r)
The Pleasure Telephone

The remarkable story of the use of the early telephone to relay live entertainment and news direct to subscribers' homes in the late 19th/early 20th century.

The gasps of admiration at Alexander Graham Bell's 1876 invention of the telephone had barely died away before the new medium was being seen not just as a means of conversation but as an instrument for relaying live music. As soon as 1881, live performances from two Paris opera houses were being transmitted to a great electrical exhibition.

Opera was to have an honoured place in entertainment-by-telephone history - in London, for example, Covent Garden performances could be accessed live in private homes, gentlemen's clubs and hotels. In the USA, subscribers were 'taught' operas by an interweaving of spoken libretto and recordings of arias.

However, The Pleasure Telephone also looks at the breadth of entertainment offered via the telephone by companies in the UK, Hungary, France and the USA. In London, for example, the Electrophone company offered a range of West End productions to subscribers - including via coin-in-the-slot machines. There was also live worship on offer from prominent churches.

But the most astonishing developments took place in Budapest, where the Telefon Hirmondo company offered what we would fully recognise as a radio station - including a full daily schedule of up-to-the-minute news of all kinds.

The Pleasure Telephone tracks down key locations and various items of authentic equipment - visiting the Opera Comique in Paris, and in the UK the Science Museum, the Amberley Working Museum in Sussex, the Palace Theatre in London and the Museum of London, which owns an original Electrophone table at which subscribers sat to listen via special headsets.

Presenter: Broadcaster and journalist Edward Seckerson has a prominent internet presence as an interviewer and podcast creator.

Among the contributors to The Pleasure Telephone are John Liffen of the Science Museum, communications historians Tim Crook, Neil Johannesen and Sean Street, Royal Opera House archivist Francesca Franchi and music journalist Patrick O'Connor, who died suddenly during the making of this programme.

SUN 22:15 Words and Music (b00sbc1t)
The Art of Friendship

Readers Robert Lindsay and Diana Quick.

An exploration of the art of friendship as celebrated through the ages in poetry, prose and music. For all the thousands of poems on love, there are distinctly fewer on what could be seen as love's neglected cousin, friendship. And yet friendship is as common to the human experience as love, and probably just as necessary.
How should we make friends, keep friends, lose them...? What happens to friendships as we get older? Do men and women see friendship in the same way? What is the true nature of friendship - and is it all it's sometimes cracked up to be?

Words from Plutarch, Sir Francis Bacon, Ogden Nash, Auden, T.S.Eliot, Dorothy L. Sayers, Edward Thomas and others, with music to complement the readings.

SUN 23:30 Jazz Line-Up (b00sbc1w)
Ramsey Lewis, Jerry Bergonzi

Jazz Line-Up this week features Julian Joseph in conversation with piano legend Ramsey Lewis who at 75, still has the will to make more albums. Since 'Wade in the Water', and 'The In Crowd' in the mid-sixties, Lewis has constantly produced albums and, as he mentioned to Julian Joseph, it does not stop here.
His current CD "Songs From the Heart" is totally Ramsey Lewis product and who can tell from his playing that he means every note, a comment Joseph makes to him.

And in the same programme, there's USA tenor supremeo Jerry Bergonzi in concert in a recording made last year at the Jazz Bar in Edinburgh. The jazz educator and writer once again works his magic with his sheer artistry and ideas.

MON 12:00 Composer of the Week (b00sbc6l)
Verismo

Episode 1

When it comes to Italian opera, the term verismo promises tales of high drama, love, lust, violence and death. From the anguish of Elisabeth in Verdi's Don Carlos, to the ghastly murder that draws the curtains on Puccini's Il tabarro, this is a week of passion, ecstasy and heartbreaking tragedy, realised in sumptuous musical technicolour by the grand masters of the genre. There's a feast of music by Puccini, Leoncavallo and Mascagni, along with a series of lesser known but equally colourful characters including Cilea, made famous by Enrico Caruso, Ponchielli, probably best known for the comedic realisation of Dance of the Hours in Disney's Fantasia and Catalani, whose best known aria was used in the French film "Diva". There's even an aria from an alternative Bohème, written by Leoncavallo at the same time as Puccini's big hit.

But it's not as easy as it might seem to work out why these composers get lumped together. Musically speaking at least, verismo is a term that's probably got more exceptions than rules, inviting debate to the point where some academics have stated it should be "handled with great care.if at all"!
Happily ignoring that particular advice, as part of the BBC's opera season in 2010, the Italian opera authority Roger Parker joins Donald Macleod to map out the ways in which "verismo" can be applied to opera from Verdi to the twentieth century.

Monday's programme begins in the 1870s, in the aftermath of a newly unified Italy. Responding to the prevailing artistic restlessness, composers were keen to break away from the operatic conventions of the past and found inspiration in an avant-garde literary movement headed up by Giovanni Verga. It was against this backdrop that the grand old man of Italian opera, Verdi looked to Paris and grand opera, wishing to produce something new and distinctly modern. Soon enough a tide of younger composers rushed to follow in his wake.

Erik Gandini, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Duke Ellington's America

In Night Waves tonight/tomorrow night Philip Dodd talks to the film director Erik Gandini whose new documentary about Silvio Berlusconi has generated controversy and censure in Italy. He'll be discussing the reaction to the film and to what extent Italy has really undergone a cultural revolution.

The Somalian writer and former Dutch politician Ayaan Hirsi Ali will be discussing her new book 'Nomad'. Hirsi Ali came to prominence for her outspoken criticism of Islamic extremism. Now living under protection in the United States her latest book warns against the liberal values of multiculturalism which, she argues, have led to a weakening of defences against the extremes of Islam.

Also in the programme, 'Duke Ellington's America'. Philip will be talking to the author Harvey Cohen about the life of the musician and civil rights campaigner and exploring his significance in American culture.

That's all in Night Waves with Philip Dodd here on Radio 3 at 9.15pm tonight/tomorrow night.

Curios

Jez Nelson presents a concert by Curios, recorded exclusively for Jazz On 3 in April at The Vortex Jazz Club in London. Over the past three years pianist Tom Cawley, double bassist Sam Burgess and drummer Josh Blackmore have earned a reputation as one of the UK's most exciting young bands. Playing Cawley's compositions, which are often inspired by his love of Formula 1, their distinctive sound encompasses propulsive and complex rhythms, lyrical melodies, and reflective ensemble playing. Recently, as heard in this concert and on their new album The Other Place, they've added subtle electronics to the mix.

Tom Cawley can be heard playing alongside Peter Gabriel, Gwyneth Herbert, Guy Barker, Charlie Watts and many more, and was a founder member of Acoustic Ladyland. He also finds time to be professor of jazz piano at the Royal Academy of Music, where he taught his current band mate Josh Blackmore. Curios won Best Band at the 2008 BBC Jazz Awards.

Verismo

Episode 2

The last decade of the nineteenth century produced a work that's been cited as a watershed of verismo. Mascagni's Cavalleria rusticana is a tale of rivalry and infidelity, set in a village in Sicily. Its unprecedented popularity generated a rush of composers interested in producing their own takes on this new style of musical drama. Two years later that included Leoncavallo who produced "I Pagliacci", an opera that's forever linked with Cavalleria rusticana as part of the double bill popularly known as Cav and Pag
With Donald Macleod and Roger Parker.

It began with the disastrous visit to Mallorca where Chopin, his lover George Sand and her two children arrived in the autumn of 1838, intending to spend the winter. Experiencing adverse conditions, however, they had to retreat to Marseilles after three months. This concert was recorded in February as part of the Rodewald Concert Series.

THU 19:50 Twenty Minutes (b00sbfps)
Concerning Franklin and His Gallant Crew

It was on this day, 20th May in 1845, that Lord Franklin's ships the Erebus and Terror cleared the mouth of the Thames on their voyage to find the Northwest Passage. A traditional song recounts the story 'of Franklin and his gallant crew' and through this Julian May explores Franklin's fateful, indeed fatal, voyage, and reveals how folk song, as well as beautiful and inspiring, can be history.

"With a hundred seamen he sailed away
To the frozen ocean in the month of May
To seek that passage around the pole
Where we poor sailors do sometimes go."

The ships were lost (the wrecks are still to be located) - with all hands. They were locked in the Arctic ice. Eventually the crew abandoned them and headed overland to Great Slave Lake, almost 1,000 miles away. They all perished on the journey; before they died they resorted to cannibalism.

"Through cruel hardship his men did go
His ship on mountains of ice was drove
Where the Eskimo in his skin canoe
Was the only one who ever came through."

Recent discoveries have revealed that they may have been early victims of modern food packaging. Franklin's expedition was the first to rely on tinned food and it appears their supplies were shoddily manufactured and sealed with lead solder, which poisoned them. The French navigator, Aubert Bellot, set out in search of Franklin, and disappeared too. Lady Franklin also paid for an expedition to search for her husband, but that failed and what really happens remains a mystery.

"And now my burden it gives me pain
For my long lost Franklin I'd cross the main
Ten thousand pounds would I freely give
To know on earth that my Franklin do live."

Julian May's interest was kindled when he heard someone singing the song which tells the story with extraordinary vividness and accuracy. He went on to research both the history and the song itself. The narrator is aboard a ship and dreams 'concerning Franklin and his gallant crew'. Some think the author was Lady Franklin herself. The song is sung by many people - for instance England's foremost folk musician, Martin Carthy - and it has inspired artists in other disciplines, such as Michael Donaghy, who incorporates it in a poem.

On the anniversary of their setting sail Julian May traces story of Franklin and his gallant crew story through the song, via Greenwich, where there is a monument to Bellot, the National Maritime Museum, which recently mounted an exhibition about the Northwest passage that included items recovered from Franklin's expedition, and an interview with Martin Carthy, who sang the song that so intrigued him.

"In Baffin bay where the whale-fish blow
The fate of Franklin, no man may know;
The fate of Franklin, no tongue may tell,
Where Franklin along with his sailors does dwell."

Produced and presented by Julian May.

THU 21:15 Night Waves (b00sbfqm)
Money, Globish, Tyler Perry, Nicolai Lilin

In tonight's Night Waves Rana Mitter is joined by the broadcaster Anne Karpf to review the new television adaptation of Martin Amis's seminal novel of the 1980s 'Money'.

Also in the programme, a discussion about the contemporary phenomenon of 'Globish', a buzz-word coined to describe a language developing where the English language meets the Digital Age, and which is becoming so popular in Africa and China that some predict it will become the world-wide dialect of a globalised world. Rana discusses 'Globish' with Robert McCrum who has written a new book on the subject, and explores how technology has re-invented the English language, allowing it to spread through cyberspace uncoupled from Post Colonial controversy.

Rana will be talking to Tyler Perry, the film writer, producer and director. Perry was born in poverty in New Orleans but last year became the sixth highest paid man in Hollywood with films that have grossed over 400 million dollars worldwide. The first African American to own a major film and TV studio he'll be discussing his new complex in Atlanta and the significance to him of his Christian faith.

Rana Mitter meets Nicolai Lilin, whose memoir recounts his life growing up in the tough criminal gangs of Siberia, a comminity displaced to a forgotten corner of Eastern Europe by the Soviet regime. They operate by a strict code of honour which Lilin only escaped by joining the Russian army in Chechnya. He has now escaped the criminal life to write a European bestseller about his past - including prison at the age of 12.
