It's only the middle of the week, and already, Donald Macleod is imparting the news of a composer's tragic early death. Johann Stamitz was 39 when he died - a fact which is usually reserved for Friday's programme. In this case, the story will continue with the mixed fortunes of Stamitz's sons, Carl and Anton. In a new production of Prokofiev's 'The Gambler', the Royal Opera House in London claims to revolutionise opera by lowering its top-price tickets. The production opens this week and Sean met the lead protagonists earlier in the week, soprano Angela Denoke (Polina) and tenor, Roberto Sacca (Alexei) and talked to them about the challenges of their roles.
Also, Sean is joined by Mahler specialist, conductor Eliahu Inbal. Maestro Inbal talks to Sean about his upcoming performance of Mahler's 2nd 'Resurrection' Symphony and his recent appointment as Chief Conductor of the Czech Philharmonic.
Performance on 3 continues its informal focus on the works of Beethoven with the start of a landmark cycle of the composer's symphonies performed by leading period instrument group The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. They begin their cycle with symphonies no.4, one of the composer's most underrated yet dramatic and no.7 one of the most popular and a reflection of the time in which it was written during the Napoleonic Wars. They are conducted by Vladimir Jurowski with whom the orchestra have a close relationship developed in both opera house and concert hall, one of four conductors with whom they'll work on the complete cycle over the next few months.
Each symphony in this cycle is prefaced with episodes from the life of the composer read by newsreader and Beethoven biographer, John Suchet adapted from his fictionalised life of the composer "The Last Master".
Following this as part of Radio 3's Turkish season performances of Turkish music and performances by Turkish musicians.
And the set began with an improvisation for Kanun.

Richard Strauss is reported to have boasted that he could even depict a knife and fork in music, so when he sets out to depict the grandeur and majesty of the Alps in his Alpine Symphony - the result is impressive. Scored for a huge orchestra with wonderful musical portraits of a waterfall, blazing sun on an ice-capped summit and a musical storm the piece describes an alpine hike from sunrise to sunset. As Strauss idolised the music of Mozart it's appropriate that his work is prefaced by two compositions by the 18th century master. His Symphony no.33, one of the last works he wrote in Salzburg before moving to Vienna, and one of his most popular Piano Concertos - no.24 - with Martin Helmchen as soloist.

Joseph Stiglitz/Hussein Chalayan/Tom Ford/Alexander McQueen Tribute/Stasi Exhibition
Joseph Stiglitz, Economist, Nobel Laureate and former senior advisor to Bill Clinton joins Anne McElvoy to talk about his new book Freefall: America, Freemarkets and the Sinking of the World Economy, suggesting what went wrong, how it was allowed to happen, and what we should do about it.
Continuing Night Waves exploration of the British Turkish experience, Anne meets Hussein Chalayan. His work has featured furniture that turns into clothing, a dress made out of paper that folds up into an airmail envelope, and naked models with giant seed-pods on their heads. Chalayan talks about the double experience of belonging to two cultures and also to none, his views on the Islamic veil and the secular Islamic culture of his childhood, and the changing face of Turkish identity.
In a fashion double bill, Anne also talks to Tom Ford. Ford is credited with turning around the Gucci name in the 1990s. Now he has made his first film, the Oscar nominated A Single Man, starring Colin Firth and Nicolas Hoult. Ford talks about the ways in which he hopes to break down some of the stereotypical portrayals of gay men and of British reserve on film.
We have an appreciation of the British fashion designer Alexander McQueen, whose death was announced today.
And Anne will be visiting the German Embassy to see an exhibition which explores the history of the Ministry for State Security - better known as the Stasi - in the former GDR. 'The Dissenter is the Enemy', which has already toured throughout Germany, tells the story of the officers, informers and victims of the security service.

Johann Stamitz and sons
Episode 5
For one reason or another, Johann Stamitz's two sons never really achieved their father's fame or fortune. Anton must have thought he'd got it made when he started work as a member of the King's Music at the French Court. Bad timing though. This was the 1780s, and royal patronage was about to become a whole lot less desirable than it had been for several centuries. Anton survived the Revolution, but as Donald Macleod discovers, both of the Stamitz sons died in terrible circumstances - the end of a rags-to-riches-and-rags-again story of one eighteenth century family.

Bach, Kuhnau, Calvisius, Telemann, Schein
Part 1
Presented by Catherine Bott
When, in 1723, J S Bach was appointed Cantor of St Thomas' Church, Leipzig - third choice for the job - the town council famously remarked that, since the best was not available, they must make do with the mediocre. But St Thomas' already had a long and distinguished musical tradition before Bach arrived, and this concert explores the music both of Bach and of his predecessors. Many of these, like Bach, ended their days at St Thomas' and died in office - the Cantor's post a career-summit from which they wouldn't wish to move. But for Bach, St Thomas's was a step down (after his previous more illustrious appointments at the Ducal and Princely courts) and one from which he spent a considerable amount of time trying to escape!
Live from St Paul's Church, Knightsbridge, in London, the BBC Singers and St James's Baroque perform cantatas, motets and instrumental pieces by J S Bach himself and by some of his illustrious predecessors.
J S Bach: Sinfonia (BWV 174)
J S Bach: Der Geist Hilft (BWV 226)

FRI 19:50 Twenty Minutes (b00qff7g)
Bach on Screen
The music of Bach has inspired film makers as far back as the silent era up to the present day. Film historian Professor Ian Christie traces the composer's impact on films including The Battleship Potemkin, Disney's Fantasia of 1940, which featured Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, and the switched-on synthesised Bach of Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange.
During World War Two the morale-boosting Listen To Britain short films were accompanied by Myra Hess playing Bach at the National Gallery, the nationality of the composer notwithstanding. The timelessness of the music detached viewers from its German heritage.
In 1964 Pier Paolo Pasolini's The Gospel According to St Matthew, an interpretation of the life of Christ based on the writings of the Apostle Matthew, combined Bach with Billie Holiday to towering effect while Daniele Huillet and Jean Marie Straub's famous film biography of the composer told through his wife's journals, Chronicle of Anna Magdalena Bach, transported the film to soaring heights.
Christie celebrates Bach's influence on film through genres and generations and also considers how mood and performance enhance the stories on screen.

Turkish Literature - Orhan Pamuk
As part of Radio 3's focus on Turkey, Ian McMillan presents a special edition of Radio 3's cabaret of the word, focussing on Turkish literature, and featuring an interview with Orhan Pamuk and an exploration of the Turkey's influential poetic avant-garde in the 1950s, the Ikinci Yeni.
McMillan talks to Pamuk, who is as controversial figure in his own country as he is feted abroad, about the political stance he has taken on issues such as the history of Turkey's relationship with its Armenian population, and the personal cost to him of that stance. Pamuk also discusses his new novel, The Museum of Innocence, and its portrayal of a Turkish elite stranded between the traditions of their own country and the shallow distractions of Western consumerism.
Ian will also be exploring the lasting influence of the poets who made up the Ikinci Yeni, or Second New, Turkey's avant garde poetry scene in the 1950s. The work of Ece Ayhan, Ilhan Berk and their colleagues remains little-known outside Turkey, and yet their influence is discernible in the work of many contemporary Turkish writers, Orhan Pamuk among them.
The programme will also feature the best new Turkish writing and profile the English writers who have chosen to make Istanbul (one of this year's European Capitals of Culture) their home.

Germany Dreaming
A Return to Cologne
After a bizarre dream, author and critic Michael Bracewell is prompted to explore all things German, which means travel and much speculation: And finally, a return to Cologne.
"With the greatest respect to Dr Freud, I have never put much store by the interpretation of dreams. But one night seven years ago I had a dream which actually changed my life. As I slid towards sleep, it seemed as though a corner of the room was beginning to glow..."
The author and critic Michael Bracewell dreams about a visitation by the legendary musician Brian Eno, who informs him that 'Germany is your America', and that he should get out there and explore the place. So after much speculation about things German, after visits to Cologne, Munich and Berlin, and after immersing himself in the music and art of the country (especially electronic music and post modern art) the author is ready to pronounce on his romantic and prejudicial responses to the country. There is also its food to consider. And its youthful fashions.
What does he dig up? Lots! And in a final essay, he returns, wiser, to Cologne. Which you can hear about in his specially commissioned five part series for The Essay.

Lopa Kothari
Sounds from around the world, with Lopa Kothari, including a specially recorded studio session by the Dele Sosimi Afrobeat orchestra.
Afrobeat is the blend of jazz, funk and traditional Nigerian music that was pioneered by the late Fela Kuti. Dele Sosimi played keyboards in Fela Kuti's group Egypt 80 from 1979 to 1986, recording a string of influential and highly charged anti-establishment songs such as Movement of the People, Army Arrangement, and International Thief Thief. Following work with Fela Kuti's son Femi in the Positive Force, Dele moved from Lagos to London where he has developed his own jazz-influenced sound rooted in the Yoruba rhythms of the Afrobeat tradition. Dele Sosimi sings and plays keyboard in his Afrobeat Orchestra, a substantial 11-piece outfit including horn section and backing vocalists.
