Dimitrie Cantemir

Lucie Skeaping profiles the extraordinary life and work of the polyglot Dimitrie Cantemir. Born in Moldavia in 1673, he became one of the foremost intellectuals of Eastern Europe. Scholar, Orientalist, composer, theorist, historian, and fleetingly Prince of Moldavia, he also was a virtuoso played of the tanbur, a long-necked lute. In 1710 Cantemir compiled 'The Book of the Science of Music', a collection of about 355 compositions, 9 of which were by Cantemir himself. This collection charted the theory and forms of 17th century Ottoman music, and was written in a notation also devised by Cantemir. The music in the programme includes several works form this book, and traditional music from the Ottoman world during this time, including recordings by Hesperion XXI.

All of these are in play as the Plebeian Doge of 14th Century Genoa struggles against his Patrician bitter rival. Plácido Domingo takes on one of the great baritone roles of the repertoire, Simon Boccanegra, and bass James Morris plays his nemesis, Jacopo Fiesco.

Presented by Margaret Juntwait with guest commentator Ira Siff. Including backstage interviews and the famous Met Quiz during the intervals.

Arlene Sierra - an American-born composer now resident in the UK - is represented by her more recent work, Aquilo, which won Sierra the Takemitsu Prize in 2001. Huw Watkins, a pianist/composer still in his early thirties performs his own Piano Concerto, which was commissioned by the BBC for this orchestra in 2002. SUN 21:30 Sunday Feature (b00qf7w7)
Turkey in Europe

Four hundred years ago, much of Central Europe was under Turkish rule and the traces of their presence remain to this day. We bathe, drink coffee and eat croissants courtesy of the Ottoman Turks. Even the music of Mozart is full of Turkish sounds. Yet many nations still resist Turkey joining the EU. Is this because they are in denial about the past influence of the Ottoman Empire? Visiting today's Turkish communities in Vienna and the Moslem districts of Sarajevo, Dennis Marks poses that question to contemporary Austrians, Bosnians and Turks - artists, scholars, politicians and historians - to discover what they share and what they fear.

SUN 22:15 Words and Music (b00ldrnw)
Song for Ireland

A sequence of poetry, prose and music exploring the identity of the Irish through the landscape, with readings from Irish actors Lorcan Cranitch and Orla Charlton.

Literature featured spans the 9th century to the present day and includes some of the best-loved Irish poets - WB Yeats, Seamus Heaney, PJ Kavanagh, Derek Mahon and Paul Durcan. Music ranges from the pastoral idyll of Bax's Moy Mell and the chaotic Irish circus of John Cage's Roaratorio to the sound of Liam O' Flynn on Uillean pipes and young flute player Michael McGoldrick.

SUN 23:30 Jazz Line-Up (b00qf7wp)
Pat Metheny

Pat Metheny has moved away from his "One Quiet Night" concept where played continually for hours and took his favourite moments to make his new album called "Orchestrion"

Orchestrion brings a musical idea from the late 19th and early 20th centuries - a large mechanical multi-instrument device that uses actual orchestral instruments of various types, called an "orchestrion". Metheny's concept includes a large ensemble of acoustic instruments - including several pianos, drum kit, marimbas, "guitar-bots", dozens of percussion instruments and even cabinets of carefully tuned bottles. Through Metheny's guitar and compositional mind, five new original pieces showcase the instruments as they are struck, plucked, and otherwise played via the technology of switches and pneumatics. Metheny worked for months with a brilliant team of scientists and engineers to develop and assemble the "New Orchestrion" for this project.
The programme also features part of a concert set featuring Bill Frisell, recorded in Austria last year.

Johann Stamitz and sons

Bohemian Emergent

The various members of the Stamitz family are not exactly household names today. But during the eighteenth century, Stamitz was one of the most famous and celebrated names in music, with a dynasty of composers working all over Europe.

This week, Donald Macleod tells the rags-to-riches-and-back-to-rags-again tale of the most successful Stamitz - Johann - and his two sons, Carl and Anton. It's a story which begins with fame and fortune. Johann quickly achieved a reputation across Europe and was snapped up by the Mannheim Court, which was home to the best orchestra in Europe at the time, the envy of the world. According to Dr Charles Burney, ".. there are more solo players and good composers in this, than perhaps in any other orchestra in Europe; it is an army of generals, equally fit to plan a battle as to fight it." Together, "this extraordinary band" and their director set about revolutionizing the sound of the orchestra and its repertoire.

As the series unfolds, the glittering success of Johann ends in a tragically early death, and we meet his two sons, Carl and Anton, neither of whom could match their father's achievements. Anton must have thought he had it made when he got a job with the King's Music at the French court. The timing was unfortunate though - this was the 1780s and working for the French king was about to become rather less prestigious than it had been for the previous several centuries. Anton managed to escape the Revolution intact, but the lives of both brothers ended unhappily, childless, alone, in poverty - a sad end to a fascinating journey through one family's rise and fall, against the backdrop of glorious eighteenth century music.

1: Bohemian Emergent. In the first episode, Donald traces the early career of the most successful of the Stamitzes - Johann - who single-handedly revolutionized the sound of the orchestra in the eighteenth century, thanks to his work at the Mannheim Court.

Beethoven/Barenboim

Beethoven: Piano Concerto No 3

Presented by Catherine Bott

Performance on 3 continues its broadcasts of Daniel Barenboim's Beethoven Piano Concerto cycle with the Berlin Staatskapelle recorded at London's South Bank. Tonight they perform Beethoven's 3rd Concerto coupled with Schoenberg's Variations for Orchestra.

Beethoven's 3rd Concerto written around 1803 is a far more ambitious work than its predecessors and with its minor key it brings out the more turbulent side of Beethoven's personality. It took him several years to complete and even at the premiere - according to his page turner - there were still incomplete passages which Beethoven improvised 'I saw almost nothing but empty leaves; at the most on one page or another a few Egyptian hieroglyphs wholly unintelligible to me scribbled down as clues for him; he played nearly the whole solo part from memory, since, as was so often the case, he hadn't had time to put it all down on paper.'

As part of the broadcast Barenboim gives an illustrated talk about the op.31 Variations, and after the main concert we hear him perform Beethoven's Diabelli Variations in a recording from the BBC archives.

Raymond Tallis/JMG Le Clezio

Matthew Sweet talks to the philosopher, doctor, poet and cultural critic Raymond Tallis about his new book "MIchelangelo's Finger". Tallis explores the significance of the fact that humans are unique in the animal world in being able to point with the index finger, and argues that this seemingly inconsequential ability has been highly significant in human evolution.

We also review the first English translation "Desert", of one of the finest novels by J M G Le Clezio, who won the 2008 Nobel Prize for literature for a body of work which the jury described as being characterised by "poetic adventure and sensual ecstasy".

MON 23:00 The Essay (b00qfcbc)
Germany Dreaming

Germany is Your America

After a bizarre dream, author and critic Michael Bracewell is prompted to explore all things German, which means travel and much speculation:

"With the greatest respect to Dr Freud, I have never put much store by the interpretation of dreams. But one night seven years ago I had a dream which actually changed my life. As I slid towards sleep, it seemed as though a corner of the room was beginning to glow..."

The author and critic Michael Bracewell dreams about a visitation by the legendary musician Brian Eno, who informs him that 'Germany is your America', and that he should get out there and explore the place. So after much speculation about things German, after visits to Cologne, Munich and Berlin, and after immersing himself in the music and art of the country (especially electronic music and post modern art) the author is ready to pronounce on his romantic and prejudicial responses to the country. There is also its food to consider. And its youthful fashions.

What does he dig up? Lots! Starting with his recollections of a certain youth culture, influenced by the style of Weimar Germany.Which you can hear about in his specially commissioned five part series for The Essay

Producer Duncan Minshull.

Beethoven/Barenboim

Beethoven: Piano Concerto No 5

Presented by Catherine Bott

The final concert in Performance on 3's broadcasts of Daniel Barenboim's Beethoven Piano Concerto cycle with his Berlin Staatskapelle at London's South Bank. Verklärte Nacht ('Transfigured Night') based on a poem by Richard Dehmel tells in music a woman's confession to her lover that she has become pregnant by another man. Beethoven finished work on this last and most imperious concerto in 1809, just as the walls of Vienna were collapsing under the might of Napoleon's invading armies and his deafness meant he was no longer up to the job of performing the new work himself.

TUE 21:15 Night Waves (b00qfcvp)
Baby Boomers/Peter Brook/Turkey

Philip Dodd talks to David Willetts, Shadow Secretary of State for Universities about his new book The Pinch arguing that the baby boomer generation have thrived at the expense of their children. Journalist Beatrix Campbell, writer Andrew Hankinson and Richard Reeves of Demos join the appraisal of the baby boom generation. 1945-65 produced the biggest, richest generation that Britain has ever known. Today baby boomers run our country; by virtue of their sheer demographic power, they have fashioned the world around them in a way that meets all of their housing, healthcare and financial needs. Will the young people of today continue to pay for their parents' quality of life, or can the Baby Boomers give something back before its too late?

Philip talks to the theatre director Peter Brook about his new touring production, 11 or 12, which argues the need for religious and political tolerance. Set in Mali under French occupation a dispute over whether a prayer should be recited eleven or twelve times leads to violent repercussions.

Istanbul is European Capital of Culture this year, along with Pecs in Hungary and Essen in Germany. But it's not a member of the European Union, and this year is the last time a non-member state will be eligible to become a European Capital of Culture. Continuing our Turkey week here on Night Waves, we discuss how European a city Istanbul is, and if it is, how European a country is Turkey?

TUE 23:00 The Essay (b00qfcvr)
Germany Dreaming

It's Off to Cologne

After a bizarre dream, author and critic Michael Bracewell is prompted to
explore all things German, which means travel and much speculation: This time he heads for Cologne.

Lots! And in this second essay, it's Cologne. Which you can hear about in his specially commissioned five part series for The Essay.

WED 19:00 Performance on 3 (b00qfd00)
OAE/Vladimir Jurowski

Presented by Catherine Bott

Performance on 3 continues its informal focus on the works of Beethoven with the start of a landmark cycle of the composer's symphonies performed by leading period instrument group The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. They begin their cycle with symphonies no.4, one of the composer's most underrated yet dramatic and no.7 one of the most popular and a reflection of the time in which it was written during the Napoleonic Wars. They are conducted by Vladimir Jurowski with whom the orchestra have a close relationship developed in both opera house and concert hall, one of four conductors with whom they'll work on the complete cycle over the next few months.

Each symphony in this cycle is prefaced with episodes from the life of the composer read by newsreader and Beethoven biographer, John Suchet adapted from his fictionalised life of the composer "The Last Master".

THU 19:00 Performance on 3 (b00qfd3p)
CBSO/Nelsons

Presented by Catherine Bott

Richard Strauss is reported to have boasted that he could even depict a knife and fork in music, so when he sets out to depict the grandeur and majesty of the Alps in his Alpine Symphony - the result is impressive. Scored for a huge orchestra with wonderful musical portraits of a waterfall, blazing sun on an ice-capped summit and a musical storm the piece describes an alpine hike from sunrise to sunset. As Strauss idolised the music of Mozart it's appropriate that his work is prefaced by two compositions by the 18th century master. His Symphony no.33, one of the last works he wrote in Salzburg before moving to Vienna, and one of his most popular Piano Concertos - no.24 - with Martin Helmchen as soloist.

THU 21:15 Night Waves (b00qfd83)
Joseph Stiglitz/Hussein Chalayan/Tom Ford/Alexander McQueen Tribute/Stasi Exhibition

Joseph Stiglitz, Economist, Nobel Laureate and former senior advisor to Bill Clinton joins Anne McElvoy to talk about his new book Freefall: America, Freemarkets and the Sinking of the World Economy, suggesting what went wrong, how it was allowed to happen, and what we should do about it.

Continuing Night Waves exploration of the British Turkish experience, Anne meets Hussein Chalayan. His work has featured furniture that turns into clothing, a dress made out of paper that folds up into an airmail envelope, and naked models with giant seed-pods on their heads. Chalayan talks about the double experience of belonging to two cultures and also to none, his views on the Islamic veil and the secular Islamic culture of his childhood, and the changing face of Turkish identity.

In a fashion double bill, Anne also talks to Tom Ford. Ford is credited with turning around the Gucci name in the 1990s. Now he has made his first film, the Oscar nominated A Single Man, starring Colin Firth and Nicolas Hoult. Ford talks about the ways in which he hopes to break down some of the stereotypical portrayals of gay men and of British reserve on film.

We have an appreciation of the British fashion designer Alexander McQueen, whose death was announced today.

And Anne will be visiting the German Embassy to see an exhibition which explores the history of the Ministry for State Security - better known as the Stasi - in the former GDR. 'The Dissenter is the Enemy', which has already toured throughout Germany, tells the story of the officers, informers and victims of the security service.

THU 23:00 The Essay (b00qllk7)
Germany Dreaming

Berlin is Calling

After a bizarre dream, author and critic Michael Bracewell is prompted to explore all things German, which means travel and much speculation: Now he's Berlin bound.

Lots! And this time it's Berlin. Which you can hear about in his specially commissioned five part series for The Essay.

FRI 12:00 Composer of the Week (b00qff50)
Johann Stamitz and sons

Episode 5

For one reason or another, Johann Stamitz's two sons never really achieved their father's fame or fortune. Anton must have thought he'd got it made when he started work as a member of the King's Music at the French Court. Bad timing though. This was the 1780s, and royal patronage was about to become a whole lot less desirable than it had been for several centuries. Anton survived the Revolution, but as Donald Macleod discovers, both of the Stamitz sons died in terrible circumstances - the end of a rags-to-riches-and-rags-again story of one eighteenth century family.

FRI 19:00 Performance on 3 (b00qff70)
Bach, Kuhnau, Calvisius, Telemann, Schein

Part 1

Presented by Catherine Bott

When, in 1723, J S Bach was appointed Cantor of St Thomas' Church, Leipzig - third choice for the job - the town council famously remarked that, since the best was not available, they must make do with the mediocre. But St Thomas' already had a long and distinguished musical tradition before Bach arrived, and this concert explores the music both of Bach and of his predecessors. Many of these, like Bach, ended their days at St Thomas' and died in office - the Cantor's post a career-summit from which they wouldn't wish to move. But for Bach, St Thomas's was a step down (after his previous more illustrious appointments at the Ducal and Princely courts) and one from which he spent a considerable amount of time trying to escape!

Live from St Paul's Church, Knightsbridge, in London, the BBC Singers and St James's Baroque perform cantatas, motets and instrumental pieces by J S Bach himself and by some of his illustrious predecessors.

J S Bach: Sinfonia (BWV 174)
J S Bach: Der Geist Hilft (BWV 226)
J Kuhnau: Tristis est anima mea

J S Bach: Erfreute Zeit im neuen Bunde (BWV 83)

Interval - 20 minutes (see separate billing

J S Bach: Sinfonia (BWV 52)

FRI 19:50 Twenty Minutes (b00qff7g)
Bach on Screen

The music of Bach has inspired film makers as far back as the silent era up to the present day. Film historian Professor Ian Christie traces the composer's impact on films including The Battleship Potemkin, Disney's Fantasia of 1940, which featured Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, and the switched-on synthesised Bach of Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange.

During World War Two the morale-boosting Listen To Britain short films were accompanied by Myra Hess playing Bach at the National Gallery, the nationality of the composer notwithstanding. The timelessness of the music detached viewers from its German heritage.

In 1964 Pier Paolo Pasolini's The Gospel According to St Matthew, an interpretation of the life of Christ based on the writings of the Apostle Matthew, combined Bach with Billie Holiday to towering effect while Daniele Huillet and Jean Marie Straub's famous film biography of the composer told through his wife's journals, Chronicle of Anna Magdalena Bach, transported the film to soaring heights.

Christie celebrates Bach's influence on film through genres and generations and also considers how mood and performance enhance the stories on screen.

FRI 21:15 The Verb (b00qff8f)
Turkish Literature - Orhan Pamuk

As part of Radio 3's focus on Turkey, Ian McMillan presents a special edition of Radio 3's cabaret of the word, focussing on Turkish literature, and featuring an interview with Orhan Pamuk and an exploration of the Turkey's influential poetic avant-garde in the 1950s, the Ikinci Yeni.

McMillan talks to Pamuk, who is as controversial figure in his own country as he is feted abroad, about the political stance he has taken on issues such as the history of Turkey's relationship with its Armenian population, and the personal cost to him of that stance. Pamuk also discusses his new novel, The Museum of Innocence, and its portrayal of a Turkish elite stranded between the traditions of their own country and the shallow distractions of Western consumerism.

Ian will also be exploring the lasting influence of the poets who made up the Ikinci Yeni, or Second New, Turkey's avant garde poetry scene in the 1950s. The work of Ece Ayhan, Ilhan Berk and their colleagues remains little-known outside Turkey, and yet their influence is discernible in the work of many contemporary Turkish writers, Orhan Pamuk among them.

The programme will also feature the best new Turkish writing and profile the English writers who have chosen to make Istanbul (one of this year's European Capitals of Culture) their home.

FRI 23:00 The Essay (b00qff8r)
Germany Dreaming

A Return to Cologne

After a bizarre dream, author and critic Michael Bracewell is prompted to explore all things German, which means travel and much speculation: And finally, a return to Cologne.

Lots! And in a final essay, he returns, wiser, to Cologne. Which you can hear about in his specially commissioned five part series for The Essay.

FRI 23:15 World on 3 (b00qff90)
Lopa Kothari

Sounds from around the world, with Lopa Kothari, including a specially recorded studio session by the Dele Sosimi Afrobeat orchestra.

Afrobeat is the blend of jazz, funk and traditional Nigerian music that was pioneered by the late Fela Kuti. Dele Sosimi played keyboards in Fela Kuti's group Egypt 80 from 1979 to 1986, recording a string of influential and highly charged anti-establishment songs such as Movement of the People, Army Arrangement, and International Thief Thief. Following work with Fela Kuti's son Femi in the Positive Force, Dele moved from Lagos to London where he has developed his own jazz-influenced sound rooted in the Yoruba rhythms of the Afrobeat tradition. Dele Sosimi sings and plays keyboard in his Afrobeat Orchestra, a substantial 11-piece outfit including horn section and backing vocalists.
