Many great musicians have passed through its doors over the past 75 years or so, either to study, perform or take part in research projects: Jordi Savall, Paolo Pandolfo, Alfred Deller, Andreas Scholl, Paul van Nevel to name but a few.

Lucie Skeaping meets the Schola's rector - Regula Rapp, and some of the current staff and students who now come from all over the world to benefit from the school's resources and expert tuition.

SAT 15:00 World Routes (b00ps0sh)
World Routes in Madagascar

Valiha and the music of the Spirit House

Lucy Duran continues her journey through Madagascar recording the ancient music of this mysterious island. This week she hears songs that accompany the important exhumation and reburial ceremonies and visits the village of her guide, Justin Vali. Whilst there she hears the delicate sound of the ancestral zither, visits a Spirit House, finds out why you can't whistle after 6pm.

In September 2009, World Routes travelled to Madagascar, the giant Indian Ocean island off the coast of Mozambique - East of the African continent. This mysterious island is full of extraordinary animal and plant life - home to more unique species than just about anywhere on the planet. It's in the grip of political turmoil and its people are some of the poorest in the world. But for us, what makes this island of strange dreams, ancestral worship and sorcery so special is its music. And, like the natural life, its unique evolution - neither African nor Asian - makes it a wonderful melting pot of instruments and styles. Throughout 2010, we'll be broadcasting the recordings we made for World Routes.

Two weeks ago on the programme, Lucy was introduced to the music of Madagascar by Justin Vali and his Malagasy Orkestra. This week she continues a journey of her own to discover some of that music in its true context. She's joined by Justin and a great friend of his; someone he calls his brother. An instrument-maker, musician, producer and - it's fair to say - a Malagasy music fanatic: Paddy Bush (who also happens to be Kate's brother).
Lucy learns about the ceremony of reburial - the bones of ancestors are removed from their tombs every 7 years and danced around, re-dressed and introduced to new members of the family. This joyous occasion is accompanied by uplifting music for flute. Lucy and the World Routes team then travel deep into the high interior. They visit a zebu (the holy cattle of Madagascar) market and record music in the remote and magical village that Justin was born in.

Produced by James Parkin

Bizet's Carmen

Including the Toreador's Song and Habanera, Bizet's Carmen is packed full of some of the best known and instantly hummable tunes in the Classical canon. So it's easy to forget that the score was declared unplayable, and the story too scandalous and debauched for polite society at its 1875 premiere.

What upset the prim Parisians was that the cast of low-life characters, including factory workers, gypsies and soldiers, is depicted without rose-tinted romanticism, the slaves of their torrid passions. Jealousy, crime and murder dominate in a Spanish setting that the French preferred to think of as perfumed and exotic. But posterity gave Bizet the last laugh and star singers have always been attracted to the roles, including Latvian mezzo-of-the-moment Elina Garanca in the title role, and the internationally renowned tenor Roberto Alagna as her murderous lover Don José.

Presented by Margaret Juntwait with guest commentator Ira Siff. Including backstage interviews with artists during the interval.

Revolution in the Air

As we embark on a new decade, Suzy Klein single-handedly mans the musical barricades, and gives some thought to revolutions - musical ones. Vienna is one flash-point, as composers from Mozart to Schoenberg discard the old and usher in the new. Paris, no stranger to political and cultural disquiet, features too; and Suzy asks whether it has been a blessing or a curse for composers and musicians to live in 'interesting times'.

SUN 13:00 The Early Music Show (b00ps11b)
The Forebears of Palestrina

Catherine Bott presents a programme of music by Palestrina and some of the composers who may have influenced his now familiar style. The performances come from a concert given at St Paul's Church in Knightsbridge by The BBC Singers, conducted by Peter Phillips. What Peter Phillips wanted to achieve when he chose this repertoire was to show "where Palestrina came from". We know that he came from Palestrina - a small hill-town not far from Rome - but this concert was designed to find out how he developed his compositional style - who his major influences were, and which other composers he may have known. Composers such as Carpentras, Firmin Lebel, Josquin Desprez and Costanzo Festa all had a degree of influence on the great Vatican composer - and each has at least one work in the programme. The programme also features pieces by Palestrina himself, including the 6-part Pentecostal motet "Dum complerentur" and his 5-part setting of the "Lamentations of Jeremiah".

SUN 17:00 Discovering Music (b00pjhsj)
Faure Requiem

Gabriel Fauré composed what is arguably his magnum opus - the Requiem in D minor - between 1870 and 1890, but his reasons for composing the piece are uncertain. Faure lost both his parents within two years of each other, which may have been his original impetus, but by the time of his mother's death he had already begun the work, which he later declared was "composed for nothing . for fun, if I may be permitted to say so!"
The first version of the work, which he called "un petit Requiem" included just five movements, but not the "Libera Me". It was first performed at La Madeleine in Paris, with Fauré himself conducting - the occasion being the funeral of the architect, Joseph La Soufaché.
Over the next two years Fauré expanded the piece to the now more familiar seven movements, and altered some of his original orchestrations. In 1899-1900, the score was reworked again for full orchestra, probably by one of his students. It was the definiteive version of the Requiem - played at Fauré's own funeral in 1924 - until John Rutter rediscovered Fauré's original manuscript of the chamber orchestra version in the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris in the early 1980s. It has now become one of the most popular pieces for choirs and choral societies all over the world.
In today's programme, Stephen Johnson explores the nuances and differences in the Requiem, using the recordings by John Eliot Gardiner's Monteverdi Choir and The Sixteen, conducted by Harry Christophers.

Season of Migration to the North, by Tayeb Salih

Season of Migration to the North
By Tayeb Salih
Translated by Denys Johnson-Davies
Dramatised by Philip Palmer.

The late Tayeb Salih's wry and sensual masterpiece has been described as the most important Arab novel of the 20th century. First published in Arabic in 1966, ten years after Sudan's independence, it's a hall of mirrors which conjures poetry and suspense from the ambivalence of the colonial legacy. A young man returning from studying in Europe to his beloved village 'on the bend in the Nile' unravels a tale which will lead to murder.

Produced and directed by Jonquil Panting.

Notes:
The most celebrated Arabic novel of the twentieth century is a sensual and shocking thriller from Sudan. Its fluid structure and elusive tone have defied many attempts to dramatise it in different media, but make it uniquely suited for radio. This dramatisation, the only one completed during Salih's lifetime, was made for BBC Radio 3 last year.

Not even the work of the recent Nobel Prize Winner, Egyptian Naguib Mahfouz, has achieved the literary status of SEASON OF MIGRATION TO THE NORTH by Sudanese-bornTayeb Salih. First published in Arabic in 1966, this short novel's translation into English in 1969 triggered a series of translations into all major languages, from Norwegian to Japanese, and a cult following. In 1989, it became the first Arabic novel to be published in the Penguin Classics series, and in 2001 was selected by a panel of Arab writers and critics as the most important Arab novel of the twentieth century. Its intelligent and richly poetic engagement with the ambivalences of the colonial legacy have made it a book which now features on University syllabuses around the world, and about which doctorates are written. Conversely it is still regularly banned and unbanned in states throughout the Arab world, and is currently banned in the place where it is so memorably set, the tiny rural villages of remote northern Sudan.

A young man returns to his beloved home 'on the bend of the Nile' after seven years studying in London, where he is proud to have completed a doctorate on the life of a minor English poet. He is comforted to find that the traditional life of the village he loves hasn't changed at all. Except for one man. A mysterious stranger has married into the village and settled down to farm. Then the stranger seeks him out. He has a tale to tell, and only a scholar can hear it. But the telling of the tale will lead them both into two brutally sexual murders, and turn the idyllic world of their village into hell.

THE CAST
Zubin Varla stars as Mustafa Sa'eed, and Beru Tessema as Suleyman. Cast includes Philip Arditti, Ellen Thomas, Nadim Sawalha, Farzana dua Elahe and Mitchell Zanghaza.

THE WRITER
Tayeb Salih was born in the Northern Province of the Sudan in 1929, and studied at the University of Khartoum, before leaving for the University of London. Coming from a background of small farmers and religious teachers, his original intention was to work in agriculture. Except, however, for a brief spell as a schoolmaster before coming to Britain, his working life was in broadcasting, including a spell as Head of Drama for the BBC's Arabic Service. He published four novels and a collection of short stories. His novella "The Wedding of Zein" was made into a drama in Libya, and a Cannes Festival prize-winning film by the Kuwaiti filmmaker Khalid Siddiq in the late 1970s.
For more than 10 years, Salih wrote a weekly column for the London-based Arabic language newspaper, "al Majalla," in which he explored various literary themes. He later became director general of the Ministry of Information in Doha, Qatar. He spent the last 10 years of his working career with UNESCO in Paris, where he held various posts and was finally UNESCO's representative in the Gulf States. Tayeb Salih died in London on 18th February 2009.

THE DRAMATIST
PHILIP PALMER is a novelist, producer, screen and TV writer whose credits include the BBC 1 film The Many Lives of Albert Walker, Rebus, Taggart, and The Bill. His extensive work for radio has included an iconoclastic dramatisation of Spenser's Faerie Queen, and the original plays The King's Coiner, Breaking Point, Blame, Rubato, The Travels of Marco Polo, Fallen and Gin and Rum. His Science Fiction novel, Debatable Space is published by Orbit, and its sequel Ketos is due next year.

Producer Jonquil Panting.

At Cupids Cove: The First English Settlement in Canada

2010 sees an important transatlantic anniversary - the 400th anniversary of the first English settlement in the north of North America, at Cupers - or Cupids - Cove, Conception Bay, in Newfoundland. Sean Street visits the site and with William Gilbert, the chief archaeologist, reveals the life of the settlers, their relations with the indigenous people and the lands they left behind.

We hear how a 'plantation' was established by the London and Bristol Company of Merchant Venturers in 1610 and the first governor was a Bristol merchant named John Guy. The settlement they founded was the first post-Norse European settlement in Newfoundland, the first English settlement in what is now Canada and one of the first European settlements anywhere in North America - 10 years earlier than the arrival of the Mayflower in Massachusetts.

William Gilbert takes Sean to the remains of the colony which were discovered in 1995 and have been excavated every summer since. Four early 17th century buildings have been revealed, including the dwelling house and storehouse erected by Guy's party in the autumn of 1610. They examine some of the 126,000 artefacts which have been uncovered, giving a remarkably full picture of the life, business and death in Cupids Cove. Some details are surprising: the settlement's fortified wall faces the sea - and Sean learns that the fear was of attack by European pirates rather than by native people.

As interesting and significant as the artefacts are the documents: several letters and reports, dating from 1610, survive, as does John Guy's journal. Indeed, the site was discovered because the correspondence provided clues to its whereabouts. Reading these Sean learns that sixty-two people spent the winter of 1612-1613 at Cupids Bay, and that there were eight deaths. One man confessed to a murder in Rochester and Guy wrote that he 'died of thought'. There was also one birth that winter - a boy born to Nicholas Guy and his wife on 27 March, 1613 - he was the first English child born in what is now Canada.

Sean hears how the artefacts, too, tell personal stories: There are two silver threads that, because of the sumptuary laws, almost certainly come from the jacket of John Guy himself. Guy specifically mentions some amber beads that he brought with him - and one of these has been found. These were very rare, so it is most probably his. There are references to the establishment of a fur trade with the Beothuk people who lived 18 miles away, and a request in the winter of 1619/1620 from Thomas Rowley that 'hatchets, looking glasses, beads, a drum and shoemakers' thread' be sent to Cupers Cove as 'truck for savages'. Hundreds of glass trade beads have been found, and William Gilbert takes Sean Street to the island where the first contact was made.

Sean Street visits Cupids Cove and tells the little-known story of the earliest English settlement in Canada. He finds that, four hundred years later, people are still there - and talks to a woman whose potato patch has become an archaeological site of great importance.

MON 12:00 Composer of the Week (b00ps141)
Jan Dismas Zelenka (1679-1745)

Episode 1

Donald Macleod begins his week-long exploration of one of Baroque music's forgotten heroes. With a name like Zelenka, he may sound like a man created only to make possible the complete A-Z list of classical composers, but this musician's talents added up to so much more. One of Zelenka's great contemporaries, Telemann, was so impressed by his abilities that he was complicit in a plot to steal copies of his work. And none other than J.S.Bach spent much of his time in Leipzig trying to curry favour with Zelenka's employers in the hope of securing an appointment. Yet, until the 1960s, Zelenka was little more than a name, even to the most knowledgeable scholars.

Born in Bohemia, Zelenka's career at the nearby court of Dresden should have been a non-starter. He was brought up a Catholic, trained by Jesuits, at precisely the time Saxony was turning Lutheran. With a passion for church music, his musical career seemed to face a dead end. Then an extraordinary political moment changed his fortunes: the decision by the Dresden royal court to create its own Catholic enclave. The Elector Augustus the Strong, so-called because he could break horse-shoes with his bare hands, now needed composers to write for the royal liturgy, and Zelenka was the perfect man for the job.

As the series unfolds, Donald Macleod traces Zelenka's career at this opulent court, famed for its art collections, lavish festivals, and extravagant religious ceremonies. It sees Zelenka quickly forge a reputation for the most solemn religious celebrations, but also fighting for recognition at court as a succession of other musicians is promoted above his head. It's ultimately a tale tinged with sadness, as Zelenka resigns himself to seeing out his tenure as a relatively low-ranking court musician. But thanks to recent research explored for the first time in the programmes we also get some insight into the high esteem he was held in by his fellow musicians, and only now being recognised by music lovers some two and a half centuries later.

In this first episode Donald Macleod uncovers the sketchy details of Zelenka's early life as his career begins to take off at the Dresden court, famed both for its staggering cultural riches and deep religious schisms.

BBC SO/Knussen

Presented by Petroc Trelawny

Oliver Knussen conducts the BBC Symphony Orchestra in music by Hans Werner Henze, from the Total Immersion event held last weekend at the Barbican Hall, London.
Art banned by the Nazis somehow reached young Hans Werner Henze as he grew up in a small German village during the 1930s. It fuelled his desire to become a musician and shaped his worldview. "Everything that the fascists persecute and hate is beautiful to me," he later recalled. An astonishingly prolific and influential composer, Henze's work includes over 30 operas and ballet scores and 10 symphonies.
Extremes of emotion meet in his Fourth Symphony, written for large orchestra in 1955. The 'air for orchestra', Fraternité, was described following its world premiere in 1999 as 'a restless search for lasting harmony'. Elogium Musicum, first heard in Leipzig in 2008, is the octogenarian composer's serene, profoundly moving and consoling 'obituary' for his companion of over 40 years.

Matthew is also joined by Peter Oborne, political editor of the Spectator, and Geoff Mulgan, the head of the Young Foundation, to discuss the rising tide of class consciousness in Britain and to ask where our class sensibilities come from and whether they are accurate to the society in which we find ourselves. Is the return of class simply a piece of pre-election posturing between Labour and the Conservatives or has some deeper shift happened in the attitudes of Britons to their station in life. In the week that John Denham marked class as a more important criteria than race in social policy, we ask why the government feels this should be so. Have we come to a natural end point in the politics of racial identity? And if nothing fundamental in the socio-economic structure of British life or the distribution of wealth has happened in the past few years, what has happened to drive up the perception of class as a key marker of identity?

Emily Bickerton in Paris reviews the latest French Film to make it big over here - Jacques Audiard's A Prophet tells the violent story of a young French Arab who rises to the top of the hellish prision in which he finds himself.

And a new exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery in London - 'Where three Dreams Cross: 150 yrs of Photography from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh'. Matthew discusses whether these images confirm or challenge our existing sense of what the Subcontinent looks like.

MON 23:00 The Essay (b00ps1m6)
Diderot

Part 1

Denis Diderot - the inspirational driving force behind the greatest publishing enterprise of the Enlightenment, the colossal Encyclopdie - introduced by historian Justin Champion.

It is hard to over-estimate the scope and ambition of the Encyclopedie. Published in two decades after 1751, it was the single greatest publishing enterprise of the European Enlightenment. Extending to 28 folio volumes, each a thousand pages in length, and with the intention of recording all existing knowledge, both practical and intellectual, the Encyclopedie contained some 72,000 articles by 230 contributors and sold an astonishing 250,000 copies across Europe. For the first of five programmes, the historian Justin Champion introduces the undertaking, from the commissioning of contributors to the practicalities of printing, binding and distribution, and on to its reception both by ordinary readers and by the political and religious authorities. In Justin's introduction Denis Diderot, the son of a provincial cutler, is brought back to life as the extraordinary driving passion behind this breathtaking landmark both of publishing history and the Enlightenment project.

TUE 19:00 Performance on 3 (b00ps1rb)
Scottish Chamber Orchestra/Charles Mackerras

Presented by Petroc Trelawny

Sir Charles Mackerras conducts the Scottish Chamber Orchestra in Mozart's "Haffner" Symphony and Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme by Strauss.
Mozart wrote the "Haffner" Symphony rather unwillingly for a merchant in his home town of Salzburg, where it was first performed. Looking at it again before performing it in Vienna, he was surprised by the quality of the music he had written in great haste. "My new Haffner Symphony has positively amazed me, for I had forgotten every note of it," he wrote to his father. "It must surely make a splendid effect."
A splendid effect is precisely what Strauss aimed for in his first Horn Concerto, while his music for Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme began life as incidental music to Molière's play of the same name . It is a sparkling score paying homage to Jean-Baptiste Lully, who wrote the original music for the Molière play.

TUE 23:00 The Essay (b00ps1yv)
Diderot

Part 2

In the Taylorian Institute, Oxford, Kate Tunstall and Caroline Warman leaf through the 28 folio volumes of Diderot's Encyclopdie to introduce its extraordinary scope.

Considering it was published in the 1750s, the Encyclopedie, with its 28 folio volumes and 72,000 articles, puts the wonders of the internet firmly in the shade. Dr Kate Tunstall and Dr Caroline Warman, both of whom teach French at The University of Oxford, are passionate enthusiasts of the Encyclopedie. In this evening's programme, they broadcast from the Taylorian Institute in Oxford, pulling volume after immense folio volume from the open shelves to show how the complex system of "renvois" or cross-references, makes the Encyclopedie both a mine of information about the Enlightenment and a browser's dream.

WED 19:00 Performance on 3 (b00ps3g5)
RSNO/Deneve

Presented by Petroc Trelawny

Stéphane Denève conducts the Royal Scottish National Orchestra in a programme of French music: the Requiem by Fauré, Roussel's Symphony No3 and Ravel's La Valse.
Fauré said of his Requiem, one of the best-loved works in the choral repertoire, ".it is thus that I see death: as a happy deliverance, an aspiration towards happiness above, rather than as a painful experience." Its beautiful tranquillity has allowed many listeners to share in the musical and spiritual comfort of that vision.
Roussel's Third Symphony was premiered by the Boston SO and Koussevitsky in 1930. It is a work of contrasts: the thunderous first movement contrasts with the pastoral melancholy meditation of the Adagio and the fairground sounds of the Vivace, while the tremendous exultation of the last movement prepares the way for the energy of Ravel's La Valse
.

Fauré Requiem
Roussel Symphony No3
Ravel La Valse

Stéphane Denève (conductor)

Followed by Part 3 of a celebratory concert with the Ulster Orchestra from the Waterfront Hall, Belfast, in which Seamus Heaney & Michael Longley read their poetry.

WED 21:15 Night Waves (b00ps3g7)
Science under Barack Obama

Philip Dodd presents an edition of Night Waves dedicated to assessing science in America under Barack Obama.

One year ago today Barack Obama's inaugural address pledged that "We will restore science to its rightful place...our time of standing pat, of protecting narrow interests and putting off unpleasant decisions - that time has surely passed'.

These words brought delight to many in the science world and provoked anger amongst others. Under President Bush science in America had become a hotly contested subject with accusations of inappropriate political interference, scepticism of climate change science was widespread and federal funding for stem cell research restricted on religious grounds.

Obama had made many science-related promises on the campaign trail, so a year on how comfortably does science sit in the American landscape? Had the US lost touch with the rest of the scientific world as some claimed, and has that ground been made up by the new administration? In a year that has been dominated by the road to Copenhagen's Green summit, has anything changed? How much political independence exists today?

Philip Dodd is joined by a roundtable of guests who have been keeping a close eye on developments in this edition of Night Waves dedicated to Science under Obama:

Stewart Brand - author of the newly published Whole Earth Discipline
Dr Janet Rowley - human geneticist at the University of Chicago
Chris Mooney - author of The Republican War on Science and Unscientific America
Reverend Robert Sirico - founder of the Acton Institute for the Study of Religion and Liberty
Professor Jared Diamond - Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Guns, Germs and Steel: How Human Societies Fail
Oliver Morton - Energy and Environment Editor for The Economist
Dr Brent Blackwelder - President Emeritus of Friends of the Earth, United States.

WED 23:00 The Essay (b00ps3g9)
Diderot

Part 3

Kate Tunstall introduces Diderot's Letter on the Blind, which asked, in the 18th century, philosophical questions about human life with which we still grapple today.

How do we know what we know, or what we think we know? Why do people have different ideas about the world, and how can we judge them? What are the origins of the universe? Is there any proof of the existence of God? These are questions which still preoccupy us today, but Dr Kate Tunstall, who teaches French at the University of Oxford, is fascinated by how the great French thinker and activist, Denis Diderot, asked them in the age of the Enlightenment. In this evening's Essay, she introduces his early work, Letter on the Blind, which starts with the eighteenth century fascination with cataract operations and goes on to explore what answers blind people can give sighted people about the meaning of life.

Widor, Tavener, Langlais, Part

Part 1

St Giles' Church, in London's Barbican, is one of only a few such places in this country which can boast two complete and well-equipped organs in the same building - unlike some Continental countries, especially France, where it's much more common. In this live Performance on 3, the BBC Singers and David Hill explore some of the sacred repertoire which makes use of these musical resources - including two splendidly exuberant settings of the mass by French composers, Arvo Part's setting of a plainsong hymn, and the first performance of a new piece by BBC Singers' new Associate Composer, Gabriel Jackson. In addition, solo works for two organs by two 20th-century masters of the instrument, and motets for double choir. Presented by Petroc Trelawny.

THU 19:50 Twenty Minutes (b00ps449)
Tales from the Loft

It's not enough simply to be a great musician- to be a successful organist you have to have the physical stamina to climb narrow stairwells and cope with heights and you have to have an understanding of the technical complexity of the instrument you're about to play. The organ, whether in a concert hall or cathedral, is a sophisticated and intricately designed piece of musical equipment, with stops, keyboards, pedals and often miles of pipework. It all adds up to creating an instrument with as much of a personality as the people who play it.

"Tales from the Loft" combines the thoughts of players and those who build instruments to evoke a picture of the many facets of the organ. Among those taking part are the international artist Dame Gillian Weir and the organ builder Kenneth Tickell, who we hear putting the finishing touches to a new organ at Lincoln's Inn Chapel in London.

THU 21:15 Night Waves (b00ps3v6)
The Enlightenment

Rana Mitter and guests debate the question: Is the Enlightenment still relevant today?

In recent years, a short period in eighteenth century European history has been noisily dragged out of the library and become contemporary and controversial. To its supporters the Enlightenment is the cornerstone of the modern world - a time when European thinkers like Voltaire, Rousseau, Hume and Adam Smith defined the core principles of modern Western life: the triumph of reason, the rise of human rights, the creation of the free market, and the roots of modern democracy. But to its critics, the Enlightenment has now become a twisted dogma - intolerant of the religious, anti-Islamic and hostile to those (non-Europeans) who don't share its values.

Night Waves marks the end of six weeks of R3 Essays about the original Enlightenment thinkers with a debate that is essential to understanding today's arguments about Europe, its Muslim population and the place of faith in our global society.

Rana Mitter is joined by a round table of historians, theologians and politicians to ask if we need more Enlightenment - or if it needs to be returned to the European library stacks once again.

THU 23:00 The Essay (b00ps3v8)
Diderot

Part 4

Dr Caroline Warman explores Denis Diderot's passionate interest in women, both personally and as the victims of intolerance and injustice.

The love letters of Denis Diderot to his mistress Sophie Volland are amongst the most passionate and touching of all Enlightenment writing. According to Dr Caroline Warman, an expert in the French Enlightenment at Jesus College, Oxford, "they sizzle the pages they are written on". In this evening's Essay, Caroline Warman explores Diderot's passionate interest in women, both from a personal point of view and as victims of injustice and intolerance. She introduces his erotic novella, Indiscreet Jewels, and his semi-pornographic novel, The Nun, while unpacking Diderot's serious and stimulating exploration of the abuse of power and the human appetite for pleasure.

FRI 19:00 Performance on 3 (b00qjt8b)
Delius, Berlioz, Tchaikovsky

Part 1

Presented by Petroc Trelawny
Takuo Yuasa conducts the Ulster Orchestra in The Walk to Paradise Garden by Delius and Tchaikovsky's First Symphony. They're joined by soprano Elizabeth Watts in Nuits d'été by Berlioz.
The world of Shakespeare hovers behind this concert live from the Ulster hall, Belfast. Walk to Paradise Garden is an orchestral interlude from the opera A Village Romeo und Juliet by Delius, the story of which is based on Shakespeare's famous story. Hector Berlioz had a passion for the works of Shakespeare, and the title Les nuits d'été is a nod in the direction of A Midsummer Night's Dream, though the work is setting of poems of romantic longing - La Comédie de la mort - by the high romantic poet Théophile Gautier. Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 1 is titled Winter Dreams, and although totally original, the elfin mood of the scherzo might have stepped out of Mendelssohn's Midsummer Night's Dream.

Delius: The Walk to Paradise Garden
Berlioz: Nuits d'été
Tchaikovsky: Symphony No.1
Elizabeth Watts soprano
Takuo Yuasa conductor
Ulster Orchestra.

FRI 19:45 Twenty Minutes (b00ps40k)
To Chekhov's Memory

By Alexander Kuprin.

Structured around 'a day in the life', this essay provides a unique contemporary perspective on Anton Chekhov in his later years. The author Alexander Kuprin paints a vivid a picture of Chekhov's life in Yalta - the regular visits from aspiring writers, his sensitivity to critics, and Chekhov's uneasy relationship with his two dogs - Tusik and Kashtan.

Alexander Kuprin was a hugely popular writer in pre-Revolutionary Russia. Tolstoy hailed him as the natural successor to Chekhov, and Nabokov styled him as a Russian Kipling - as well as writer, he was a pilot, explorer and adventurer.

Read by Ben Whishaw.

Produced by Sasha Yevtushenko.

FRI 22:00 Composer of the Week (b00ps407)
[Repeat of broadcast at 12:00 today]

FRI 23:00 The Essay (b00ps40r)
Diderot

Part 5

Diderot experts Caroline Warman and Kate Tunstall join forces to introduce his most extraordinary work, "D'Alembert's Dream".

Denis Diderot's publications range from his monumental Encyclopedie to his erotic novella, Indiscreet Jewels, but perhaps his most extraordinary work is D'Alembert's Dream. It starts with Diderot's fellow encyclopedist, D'Alembert, challenging him to explain human life without making any reference to God or the soul or anything that isn't purely physical. Caroline Warman and Kate Tunstall, both Diderot experts at the University of Oxford, take on the Dream in a dialogue of their own and playfully challenge the listener to grapple with this quintessentially Enlightenment subject themselves.

FRI 23:15 World on 3 (b00ps40t)
Celtic Connections 2010

Episode 1

Mary Ann Kennedy live from the Late Night Sessions at the world's biggest winter music festival, Celtic Connections in Glasgow. The Sessions run from very late until very early, with line-ups that are traditionally never divulged before the day.

For seventeen years, Celtic Connections has brought musicians not only from across Scotland but from across the world in a festival that celebrates connections between cultures. The Celtic world is at the heart of the Festival, with performances from leading Scottish folk musicians, plus artists from Ireland, France and Spain, as well as from across the Atlantic. And again, the Festival makes connections further afield with musicians from Africa and the Arab world.

This is the first of two live broadcasts from the Late Night Sessions.
