SAT 13:00 The Early Music Show (b00dw24m)
Jean-Marie Leclair

Jean Marie Leclair's story is one of the most mysterious of the French baroque. He began life as a lacemaker before finding a career as a dancer, and eventually as a virtuoso violinist and composer, he became so celebrated that he was known as, "The French Corelli". He quickly came to the attention of the King and his compositions became justifiably popular. Then, in 1758 his story takes a sudden twist. Leclair's marriage broke up and he chose to live in a hovel, in a dangerous area of Paris just east of the city walls. Why, nobody knows. He didn't need to live in such circumstances. One morning, his gardener, suspicious that Leclair's garden gate had been left open, ventured within and discovered the famous Leclair lying murdered in a pool of blood in the vestibule of his house. He had been stabbed three times. The Parisian police under the auspices of the celeberated French Lieutenant General of Police, Antoine de Sartine, held a thorough investigation. So what did happen to Leclair? Had his jealous nephew, Francois, killed him in a fit of pique. Could it have been his impoverished wife, Louise? Did the gardener, Paysant, do it or might it have been a psychopathic stranger? Lucie Skeaping outlines the grisly story with actors taking the parts of the various supsects in the case. The whole programme is illustrated with a selection from some of Leclair's marvellous music.

SUNDAY 13 SEPTEMBER 2009

SUN 00:00 The Early Music Show (b00g03t6)
Milton's Comus

Comus (A Mask Presented at Ludlow Castle, 1634) was a masque written by John Milton in honour of chastity and it was first presented on Michaelmas, 1634, before John Egerton, Earl of Bridgewater at Ludlow Castle in celebration of the Earl's elevation to President of Wales with music by Henry Lawes. Milton and Lawes had a close friendship and collaborated on a number of works, but Lawes was not the last composer to write music for this masque. In Milton's 400th anniversary year, Catherine Bott travels to Ludlow Castle to explore the occasion of that first performance and the music which Comus went on to inspire. The programme includes excerpts from Comus and Milton's sonnet to Lawes: To Mr. H. Lawes, on his Aires read by Robert Glenister.

Familiar themes, including the iconic clarinet glissando and Gershwin's heart-breaking nostalgic refrain, have been used.

Plus previously un-broadcast material from Gary Husband's band Drive, recorded exclusively for the programme.

Edinburgh International Festival 2009

SCO/William Christie

Presented by Petroc Trelawny.

In a concert which opened the 2009 Edinburgh International Festival, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra perform Handel's rousing oratorio Judas Maccabeus. It is conducted by one of the great Baroque music interpreters of today, William Christie.

Judas Maccabeus was one of the most popular oratorios in Handel's lifetime, and it continues to appeal to current audiences, with its rousing choruses and strong melodies. Based on the Jewish story of Judas Maccabeus leading the Israelites to victory over their enemies, Handel and his librettist Thomas Morrell were making a highly political statement, celebrating the victory of the Duke of Cumberland and the House of Hanover over the Scottish Jacobite rebels at Culloden. For this reason it still remains provocative today.

Handel: Judas Maccabaeus

Johnson Now

Very Like a Whale

Contemporary writers reflect on the linguistic shadow cast today by Samuel Johnson, the compiler of the first great dictionary of the English language. His monumental dictionary set the standard, and English would never be the same again.

First Philip Hoare, winner of the 2009 prestigious Samuel Johnson prize for Leviathan, his non-fiction Moby Dick-inspired study of the whale, ponders the similarities between these mammals and words, and the disparities between Melville and Johnson.

The Golden Age of Steam at the Cheltenham Jazz Festival

Jez Nelson presents a gig from young British trio The Golden Age of Steam recorded at the 2009 Cheltenham Jazz Festival. Saxophonist James Allsopp's compositions provide space for improvising that's inspired by wailing lyricism, spacey grooves, disorder and ambiguity. Completing the trio are Kit Downes on Hammond organ and Tim Giles on drums.

James Allsopp and Tim Giles gained national recognition through their hard grooves fused with electronics and improvisation in the group Fraud. Known for their energetic live shows, their self-titled album received critical praise in 2007. Kit Downes is a graduate from Royal Academy of Music and has released a piano duo album with his teacher at the Academy - British pianist and composer Tom Cawley.

The Consolation of Philosophy

Episode 2

Penny Gore presents music inspired by philosophy, with a programme focusing on the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. A friend and later enemy of Wagner, Nietzsche developed astonishingly radical and controversial ideas before eventually going mad. TUE 19:00 Performance on 3 (b00mm1nc)
Edinburgh International Festival 2009

Le Concert des Nations/Jordi Savall

Presented by Petroc Trelawny.

In a concert given as part of the 2009 Edinburgh International Festival, Jordi Savall conducts music by Marais and Handel. Marais has been called the godfather of the viola da gamba, while Savall is regarded as one of the instrument's most famous exponents.

Marais was an important opera composer, and Le Concert des Nations performs ballet music from his opera Alcione. Alongside this are some of Handel's most well-known works - the Water Music suites, first performed in a barge accompanying King George I down the River Thames, and the Music for Royal Fireworks, written at the behest of England's subsequent monarch, George II.

Le Concert des Nations
Jordi Savall (conductor)

Handel: Suite No 1 in D major/G minor (Water Music)
Marais: Airs des matelots (Alcione)
Handel: Suite No 2 in F (Water Music)
Marais: Airs pour les Tritons (Alcione)
Handel: Music for the Royal Fireworks

Plus performances from the Gala recital at the Leeds International Piano Competition, where the finalists perform solo works from their competition repertoire.

Prokofiev: Sonata no.3 in A minor op.28
Rachel Cheung (piano)

Stravinsky: 3 Movements from Petrushka (Danse Russe; Chez Petrouchka; La semaine grasse)
Alessandro Taverna (piano)

TUE 21:15 Night Waves (b00mm1nf)
Revolution

Philip Dodd presents a special edition dedicated to one of the most momentous and dangerous ideas of recent centuries - revolution. Does the concept still have any real meaning?

In the late 1970s, the idea of revolution and counter-revolution still loomed large in western civilisation. The events of Bolshevik Russia in 1917 still shaped the globe. And the events of Jacobin France 1789 still shaped the mind. For over two centuries, self-declared revolutionaries and their opponents had not only stalked politics, but also the arts and social change.

But today the landmarks come from the East - Tehran's Islamic revolution in 1979 or China's communist one in 1949 now have a greater influence on world events - and 1917 and 1789 have passed into history. At the height of the recession, there has been no revolutionary talk as there was in the 1930s.

On the eve of the 20th anniversaries of the 'Velvet Revolutions' of 1989, Philip and a round-table of guests attempt to get to grips with what's left of the revolutionary spirit - and ask whether it's an idea that still mobilises.

Johnson Now

Johnson, the Dictionary, the Wiki and the Web

Four contemporary writers reflect on the mighty linguistic shadow left by the compiler of the first great dictionary of the English language, Samuel Johnson. Johnson's monumental Dictionary set the standard; after Johnson had pronounced, English could never be the same again.

In this series four very different writers from across the world reflect on the Johnsonian linguistic heritage as it plays out in their own world and their own lives. David Crystal, acclaimed writer on the English language, ponders Johnson's reaction to contemporary word-gathering machinery.

Producer: Marya Burgess

WED 19:00 Performance on 3 (b00mm2h2)
Edinburgh International Festival 2009

EU Baroque Orchestra

Presented by Petroc Trelawny.

The European Union Baroque Orchestra is an extraordinary ensemble of young musicians fresh from the conservatoires of Europe, selected to take part in the orchestra each year. In this concert from the 2009 Edinburgh International Festival, they showcase their talents in music by composers who were all active in Rome in the late 17th and early 18th centuries - Corelli, Muffat, Geminiani and Handel.

For many Baroque composers, Rome was an important place to visit and study, and both Muffat and Handel absorbed elements of the Italian style whilst staying there, as is evident in their sonatas in this concert. Corelli was one of the most influential musicians in Italy at this time and his concerti grossi were imitated and developed by his successors, including his pupil Geminiani.

European Union Baroque Orchestra
Chiara Banchini (director)

Corelli: Concerto grosso in D, Op 6, No 4
Muffat: Sonata No 2 in G minor (Armonico Tributo)
Geminiani: La Follia in D minor (after Corelli)
Handel: Violin Concerto in B flat (Sonata a 5)
Muffat: Sonata No 1 in D (Armonico Tributo)
Corelli: Concerto grosso in G minor, Op 6, No 8

Plus performances from the Gala recital at the Leeds International Piano Competition, where the finalists perform solo works from their competition repertoire.

WED 21:15 Night Waves (b00mm2hj)
Stephen Daldry/Utilitarian Architecture/Joseph P Kennedy

Matthew Sweet talks to director Stephen Daldry as a revival of his successful production of JB Priestley's An Inspector Calls opens in London. In recent years Daldry's career has taken him to America where he has directed the Oscar-winning films The Reader and The Hours, along with a Broadway production of Billy Elliot which has won a record 10 Tony Awards.

Ed Hollis, author of a new book about the Secret Life of Buildings, and Ruth Reed, the new president of the Royal Institute aof British Architects, talk to Matthew about whether architects should focus more on making existing buildings work for our present purposes, and less on grand and visionary designs.

And biographer Cari Beauchamp discusses the father of the Kennedy dynasty, Joseph P Kennedy, and his little-documented years in Hollywood during which he ran four film companies, became the richest Irish-American in the world and had a long and passionate affair with Gloria Swanson.

WED 23:00 The Essay (b00mm2k4)
Johnson Now

Telling It Like It Is

Four contemporary writers reflect on the mighty linguistic shadow left by the compiler of the first great dictionary of the English language, Samuel Johnson. Johnson's monumental Dictionary set the standard; after Johnson had pronounced, English could never be the same again.

In this series four very different writers from across the world reflect on the Johnsonian linguistic heritage as it plays out in their own world and their own lives...

Freya Johnston, lecturer in English at St Anne's College Oxford and author of Samuel Johnson and the Art of Sinking 1709-1791, engages with the language Johnson used which still influences our every day use of English.

Producer: Marya Burgess

(repeat).

THU 19:00 Performance on 3 (b00mm2pl)
Edinburgh International Festival 2009

Monteverdi Choir, English Baroque Soloists

Presented by Petroc Trelawny.

John Eliot Gardiner has been conducting the vocal works of Bach across the world for many years to great acclaim, and here he brings his choral and orchestral forces to the 2009 Edinburgh Festival.

With the sacred concerto by Johann Christoph Bach, a piece held in regard by his nephew Johann Sebastian, followed by the first Part of Handel's oratorio Israel in Egypt, which contains some moving choruses and highly descriptive depictions of the Plagues.

Bach's cantatas are some of his most dramatic sacred works, and the works which follow, composed for the Feast of St Michael and All Angels, are no exception.

Eva Hoffman/Cornish Identity/The Catwalk/Words and History

Rana Mitter talks to Eva Hoffman about her new book Time and her relationship with this elusive concept. A writer and academic, Hoffman was born in Poland in 1945 to Jewish parents on the run from the Holocaust.

Rana and guests debate the current renaissance in Cornish identity, as moves are made to have 'Cornish' offered as a nationality in the 2011 census.

As London Fashion Week gets into gear, Rana discusses the iconic stage at the centre of the action - the catwalk.

And, marking the 300th anniversary of the birth of Samuel Johnson, Professor David Wootton talks about new ways in which words, and their development, are being used as tools to understand history.

Don Paterson/Nick Harkaway/Nemo's Almanac/MacGillivray

Ian McMillan presents the weekly cabaret of language, which features Don Paterson's new collection of poems, Rain, which asks questions about life and tries to answer them, paying tribute along the way to the late poet Michael Donaghy and the Origami master Akira Yoshizawa. Paterson's last collection of poetry, Landing Light, won the TS Eliot and Whitbread Prizes.

Nick Harkaway, author of The Gone-Away World, presents a work in progress: Under Milky Way is a reimagining of Dylan Thomas's much-loved Under Milk Wood that sends the sleepy town of Llareggub and its inhabitants into space.

Novelists Toby Litt and Alan Hollinghurst pay tribute to Nemo's Almanac, one of the most fiendish literary quizzes. Over 100 years old, the first version was compiled by a Victorian governess wishing to test and entertain her tiny charges during the school holidays. In its current incarnation, the quiz is a hotly-contested annual competition offering unattributed literary and poetic excerpts on a different theme each month. Competitors must turn literary detective and track down their source. Devotees call themselves Nemoniacs.

With music from singer, songwriter, poet and artist MacGillivray, who won an award from the Slade school of art in 2003 for a unique and curious project which saw her carry a wolf carcass through the Nevada desert. Of Scottish descent, but fascinated by Native American and Inuit culture, MacGillivray sings haunting songs from the American frontier, of wolves and their hunters, love lost and lives lived in the wilderness. She's accompanied by the musician Gwalia on bass guitar.

And there is a tribute to Scottish folk storyteller and living library of Scottish Traveller language and culture Stanley Robinson who has died aged 69. Stanley was the nephew of Jeannie Robertson, herself a great folk singer and storyteller, and late in his life he was recognised for preserving and bringing to life a body of work that would otherwise have been lost.
