SAT 12:15 Music Feature (b00h9wpf)
Giovanni's House

Martin Handley explores the importance of the famous Italian music publishing firm Casa Ricordi. Throughout most of the 19th and 20th centuries, the history of Italian opera was directly tied to the fortunes of this single family publishing house, based in Milan.

The company was founded in 1808 by Giovanni Ricordi, a violinist who led the orchestra in a small Milanese theatre. From very small beginnings, the business grew rapidly and in 1814 he won the exclusive right to publish all the music performed at La Scala, where he was a prompter. Ten years later he purchased the venue's entire archive, and by 1835 Ricordi boasted a catalogue of 10,000 publications. These included most of the operas of Rossini, Bellini and Donizetti.

But the company's special relationship with Verdi and Puccini was especially significant. Giovanni's grandson Giulio persuaded Verdi to come out of retirement in 1880 and later played a vital role in Puccini's artistic career, publishing all his works. Casa Ricordi was also the first to come up with the 'royalty' concept and successfully lobbied for one of the first laws to protect composers' (and publishers') copyright. But was the firm always rigorous in its production standards?

The music includes many important operas from the 19th century, including Rossini, Bellini, Verdi and Puccini. Contributors include Simonetta Puccini, Ricordi family members, Ricordi managing director Tino Cenamo, former Ricordi director of publishing Gabrielle Dotto, music historian Philip Gossett and Verdi expert Cormac Newark.

SAT 14:00 BBC Proms (b00m0dtr)
Proms Chamber Concerts

PCM 04 - Scottish Ensemble

From Cadogan Hall, London. Presented by Louise Fryer.

The Scottish Ensemble is directed by Jonathan Morton in a rich variety of string music spanning three centuries.

At the programme's heart is a new piece by John Woolrich, framed by classic works by Mozart and Purcell. Stravinsky's mercurial Concerto of 1946 casts an ironic eye back to the musical past as it extracts every ounce of colour and contrast from the strings. With its disjointed motor rhythms, the music twists and turns, alternately maladroit and elegant, high-spirited and nostalgic.

The Orpheus Myth

In front of an audience at the Proms Literary Festival, Susan Hitch is joined by award-winning writer Philip Pullman to discuss the powerful legend of Orpheus, exploring the influence of myth as a subject for fiction.

The classical tale of Orpheus has influenced musicians and writers from Igor Stravinsky to John Milton to Nick Cave. Orpheus, whose lyre and songs could charm even Hades, king of the underworld, journeys into the kingdom of the dead to plead for the release of his wife Eurydice. Succeeding where all others have failed, he is offered a deal. He can take his wife with him, but only if he makes his return journey without turning to look at her as she walks behind him back into the land of the living. Where his heroism and charm have succeeded, his human flaw of curiosity proves his undoing.

On Life and Picnics

A Taste of Heaven, by Jane Feaver

A specially-commissioned short story by novelist Jane Feaver, exploring the disintegration of a family as seen through the eyes of a teenage girl during a long, uncomfortable summer holiday in the 1970s.

Sent to spend the holidays with her grandparents while her mother has a baby, the narrator both relishes and feels trapped by the orderly life which her grandparents lead. After their picnic by a river, a dare almost leads to disaster. Scotch eggs will never taste the same again and the first phase of childhood is left behind forever.

SUN 17:00 Discovering Music (b00m53sb)
Warlock

Radio 3 at the Summer Festivals

From the 2009 Mananan International Festival of Music and the Arts, in Port Erin on the Isle of Man, Stephen Johnson explores the nuances and intricacies of the music of Peter Warlock.

Warlock, who was born Philip Heseltine in 1894, was an eccentric musician, and in the 1920s edited the wonderfully combative music magazine The Sackbut. He was renowned as a hellraiser - a riotous prankster and great drinker, whose circle included fellow musicians such as Moeran, Constant Lambert and, occasionally, William Walton.

But this was just one side to the man - Heseltine could also be a man of intense melancholy, and his behaviour has been the subject of much conjecture since his death (most likely by his own hand) in 1930. Stephen asks questions about Warlock's perceived bipolarity and the duality of his personality which may have led to the diversity in his songs.

Tenor Michael Slattery and pianist Stephen Coombs help to uncover the genius behind some of Warlock's most beautiful songs, with reference to the many intriguing and diverse influences behind Warlock's unique sound palette. Warlock's lush harmonies and skill at word painting stem from his absorption in the music of the Tudor and Restoration periods, as well as his childhood obsession with Delius, and his friendship and admiration for Bartok and Bernard van Dieren.

The programme also features a detailed look at Warlock's magnum opus The Curlew, a chamber song-cycle setting of words by WB Yeats, for tenor voice, flute, cor anglais and string quartet, performed by Michael Slattery and The Doric Quartet, with flautist Adam Walker and cor anglais player Daniel Bates.

SUN 23:30 Jazz Line-Up (b00m54vz)
Andy Sheppard

Julian Joseph talks to saxophonist Andy Sheppard, who has released his debut recording, Movements in Colour, on European record label ECM. It sees him collaborating with the cream of musicians from the European jazz scene - tabla player/percussionist Kuljit Bhamra, bassist Alrild Andersen, and guitarists John Paricelli and Eivind Aarset. Together they create a fusion of African, Latin and Indian styles, combining electronic sounds and treatments with organic and natural elements.

Sheppard has made a significant impact on the international jazz scene over the years, playing and writing for settings from solo to big band and chamber orchestra. Since the late 1980s, he has composed over 300 works that incorporate a strong and characteristic sense of lyricism alongside a very personal use of rhythms from Asia, Africa and South America. Sheppard can also be heard on an equally eclectic range of recordings - as well as featuring on CDs with Carla Bley and George Russell. He has also played on sessions with dub poet Benjamin Zephaniah, John Martyn, Baaba Maal, Basia, Nigel Kennedy, Bristol indie band Blue Aeroplanes - and even turned up on a tribute album to punk group The New York Dolls.

Julian also pays tribute to the late American composer, drummer, theorist and conductor George Russell. Russell played drums with Benny Carter and later wrote for Dizzy Gillespie. His musical theories went on to influence the modal music of Miles Davis and John Coltrane, and he also developed the Lydian concept in 1953, credited as the first theoretical contribution from jazz.

The programme contains archive clips from an interview conducted by Julian Joseph with George Russell for Radio 3's Jazz Legends, which was originally transmitted on January 20, 2006.

Herbie Hancock at the 2008 London Jazz Festival

Jez Nelson presents another chance to hear the famous Herbie Hancock gig at the 2008 London Jazz Festival. Featuring the previously un-broadcast Lionel Loueke solo, plus music from Hancock's back catalogue of classic albums with a stellar line-up of musicians: New Orleans trumpeter Terence Blanchard, Benin born guitarist and vocalist Lionel Loueke, Gregoire Maret on harmonica, bassist James Genus and talented young drummer Kendrick Scott.

Since Herbie Hancock's emergence on the scene as part of Donald Byrd's band in 1961, he has been at the forefront of almost every major development in modern jazz. Whether it be joining Miles Davis' second classic quintet, adopting the electronic piano as his instrument of choice or going platinum with the funk-jazz fusion of his Headhunters album, Hancock has always pushed the boundaries and been a true musical trailblazer.

Gunpowder and Tobacco

Donald Macleod explores the music and musicians of James' time through key moments in his reign.

Miklos Radnoti: Poet of My Heart

Actress and writer Mia Nadasi discusses the life and work of celebrated Hungarian poet Miklos Radnoti, who died in 1944. His life ended tragically when he was killed by the Nazis as his labour unit was driven on a forced march from a camp in Serbia to Austria. When his body was later exhumed, a notebook of poems was found hidden in his clothing containing some of his greatest and most memorable poems.

Like most Hungarians of her generation, Mia remembers studying Radnoti's poems at school, and her imagination being fired both by the story of his sad and premature death and by the revolutionary, tender lyricism of his writing.

The talk includes readings of some of Radnoti's most moving poetry.

TUE 21:15 The Lebrecht Interview (b00m5rqr)
Ian Bostridge

Norman Lebrecht talks to tenor Ian Bostridge. Originally an academic specialising in English witchcraft in the 17th and 18th centuries, Bostridge burst onto the music scene in 1995 at the age of 30, rapidly becoming one of the most sought-after voices in the business. Celebrated on the operatic stage for Mozart, Monteverdi and Britten, in recital he is widely regarded as one of the great exponents of the German lied, particularly Schubert and Wolf.

In a wide-ranging and penetrating interview, Bostridge reveals the soul-searching behind his decision to leave academia behind in favour of music, his anxiety about acting on stage and why he nearly abandoned his role in Thomas Ades' opera The Tempest because he found it so difficult.

Prom 46: Glanert, Rachmaninov, Shostakovich

Part 1

From the Royal Albert Hall, London. Presented by Andrew McGregor.

Semyon Bychkov conducts the BBC Symphony Orchestra in German composer Detlev Glanert's new piece, Shoreless River, which is a foretaste of his forthcoming opera, Das Holzschiff (The Wooden Ship).

Denis Matsuev, winner of the 1998 Moscow Tchaikovsky Competition and a virtuoso in the grand Russian tradition, makes his Proms debut in Rachmaninov's demanding set of variations on Paganini's Caprice.

Prom 46: Glanert, Rachmaninov, Shostakovich

Part 2

From the Royal Albert Hall, London. Presented by Andrew McGregor.

The Prom concludes with renowned Shostakovich interpreter Semyon Bychkov conducting the BBC Symphony Orchestra in the powerful and strikingly cinematic Symphony No 11, written in 1957. On the surface the work commemorates the failed anti-Tsarist uprising of 1905, but deep down it rages at the Soviet authorities.

Total Eclipse

Simon Heighes is joined by Professor Daniel M Albert, an opthalmic surgeon with a special interest in the history of medicine, to discover the story of the flamboyant English doctor who blinded the two greatest figures in Baroque music - Bach and Handel.

John Taylor was a charlatan - a charismatic, womanising practitioner who lied his way to treat popes, royalty and anyone else who could afford his high fees. He treated Bach, after the composer's failing sight prevented him from continuing to work on The Art of Fugue, performing a procedure known as 'couching' - using a needle to pierce the composer's eyes and displace his cataracts. Some months after his operation - after days filled with pain, fever and vivid hallucinations - Bach died, leaving his great work incomplete.

When Taylor was called upon to treat the eyes of London's foremost musical celebrity, Handel, he completely blinded him and the composer never wrote music again.

Prom 48: West-Eastern Divan Orchestra

Part 1

From the Royal Albert Hall, London. Presented by Sara Mohr-Pietsch.

As part of a two-day Proms residency, Daniel Barenboim's West-Eastern Divan Orchestra performs a concert in which it revisits its roots in Weimar and the poetry of Goethe. Franz Liszt led music in Weimar for a decade in the mid-19th century, and Barenboim conducts one of his ground-breaking symphonic poems alongside a masterpiece by a composer he controversially championed - Wagner.

The Keyed Serpent

James Jolly explores the troubled history of the ophicleide, one of the most idiosyncratic brass instruments ever invented. From the Greek Ophis - a serpent and Kleis - the ophicleide became popular in military bands in the late 19th century, and was utilised by Berlioz and Mendelssohn in works such as Symphonie fantastique and Midsummer Night's Dream.

Now enjoying a revival in orchestras seeking a historically accurate approach, it still divides the opinions of two Berlioz interpreters, Colin Davis and John Eliot Gardiner. Would they have it in their orchestra? With contributions and demonstrations from ophicleidists Tony George and Stephen Wick.

Inside the Art Schools

Michael Bracewell immerses himself in the febrile atmosphere of our art schools to discover the sources of the students' inspiration. In a world flooded with visual imagery, today's fine art students are bombarded with stimuli from all sides and can struggle to find their own creative path. Bracewell hears how they wrestle with their artistic ambitions and uses their work to assess the likely future of contemporary art in this country.

He also talks to one of Goldsmith College's most high-profile alumni, Damien Hirst, who reveals how deconstructing a tomato plant with fellow students inspired him to approach art in a different way.
