Opera on 3 from the Royal Opera House

Purcell's Dido and Aeneas/Handel's Acis and Galatea

Louise Fryer presents a performance from the Royal Opera House, London, as resident choreographer Wayne McGregor's stages a double bill featuring two great English Baroque masterpieces - Purcell's Dido and Aeneas, and Handel's Acis and Galatea.

The programme forms part of the celebrations of the 350th anniversary of Henry Purcell's birth and the 250th anniversary of George Frederic Handel's death, as the ROH and the Royal Ballet join forces to couple Dido and Aeneas with Acis and Galatea, two classical tragedies of love and death.

British mezzo-soprano Sarah Connolly takes on the role of the doomed Queen of Carthage as she succumbs to the tragic fate of an unrequited love, while American soprano Danielle de Niese sings -and dances - as she becomes Galatea, the semi-godess who uses her powers to make love eternal.

Darger and the Detective

Written by Mike Walker and starring Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tracy Letts.

A play drawing on the writings of reclusive artist Henry Darger, imagining his inner life. Recorded in Chicago by actors from the Steppenwolf Theatre Company.

Vaughan Williams: Valiant for Truth

Stephen Johnson presents an elegiac portrait of Vaughan Williams the man and composer. Travelling across England - the country he so loved - to see the places he lived and worked, and meet the people who knew him, Johnson tries to get a little closer to an underrated mind.

With contributions from philosopher AC Grayling, biographers Simon Heffer and Michael Kennedy, Vaughan Williams's musical assistant Roy Douglas as well as friend and colleague Simona Pakenham.

Music includes excerpts from Messiaen's Des Canyons aux Etoiles, Redolfi's Mare Teno, Purcell's Solitude and Shostakovich's 8th String Quartet.

SUN 23:30 Jazz Line-Up (b00l1r7f)
Bill Bruford and Allan Ganley

Claire Martin focuses on the work of two influential jazz drummers - Allan Ganley and Bill Bruford.

Bruford talks to Claire about his life on the road, most recently with the band Earthworks - with Tim Garland - which features music commissioned specially by this programme. Bruford rose to fame on the British rock scene, playing with King Crimson and Yes, and following his retirement in 2009 from performing, he published his autobiography.

And saxophonist Andy Panayi, who has collated scores from the widely admired Allan Ganley, talks to Claire about the late drummer. Ganley began his career in dance bands and wrote extensively for his own big band, and the CD The Allan Ganley Legacy features tracks from his extensive library used by the Tubby Hayes band, the Johnny Dankworth band and his permanent chair as drummer at Ronnie Scott's Club.

Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971)

Looking West

From 1939 until his death in New York in 1971 Stravinsky made America his home. This week Donald Macleod explores this final chapter of the composer's life, looking at the impact his American experiences had on Stravinsky and his works. In the first programme, 'Looking West', Donald looks at Stravinsky's final years in Europe, when he was already composing works for American patrons, and leading a complicated private life, with his family ensconced in a grand chateau in South-Eastern France, and his mistress Vera in a Paris apartment. The tragic loss of his daughter, wife Katya and mother Anna within a few months in 1938 led him to feel that he no longer had ties to Paris, and he set sail for America in the autumn of 1939.

MON 21:15 Night Waves (b00l8s4z)
Translating Foreign Poetry

As part of BBC Poetry Season, Philip Dodd presents poems newly translated into English by Radio 3's Ian McMillan.

Whenever the poet finds himself overseas, Ian always makes the effort to seek out the local poetry, the way others seek out seaside rock, local carpets or car stickers. He buys a choice volume by the writer that most takes his fancy - and brings it back for his home bookshelves. His aim is to one day compose his own English-language version of the best of these foreign poets - and spread the word within these shores.

Night Waves gives him a first chance for his mission. Ian creates two new poems from literal translations into English. He can't reveal his choices, but Ian's message is clear - alongside the BBC's celebration of historical British giants like Donne and Milton and our impressive raft of contemporary poets working in the UK, let's also celebrate the rich variety of poetry that is available in translation.

Strange Encounters - Series 2

Matthew Cobb

Strange Encounters - scientists revisit mould-breaking experiments in history. Today, biologist Matthew Cobb on the quest for spontaneously generated life. In the sweltering heat of a 17th century Tuscan villa, surrounded by jars of putrefying meat, Francesco Redi doubts the idea, handed down from Aristotle, and accepted unquestioningly by his contemporaries, that insects and reptiles emerge without parents from dead flesh. The painstaking experiments not only established the notion of testing theories by exhaustive experimentation, but also laid the foundations of modern ideas of continuous heredity in all life.

Producer: Roland Pease.

TUE 21:15 Night Waves (b00l8sp5)
Russell T Davies

Matthew Sweet talks to Russell T Davies, the television writer and producer credited with making family television cool again by reinvigorating Doctor Who for the 21st century. As he leaves British television for a career in Hollywood, he tells Matthew that Susan Boyle from Britain's Got Talent has proved that the best stories are now coming out of reality TV and that scriptwriters must rise to the challenge.

Matthew talks to Thomas Edur and Agnes Oaks, the star partnership of English National Ballet, as they prepare for their final performance together and looks at other enduring partnerships across the arts. What is to be gained, or lost, in lifelong collaboration?

And art historian Lynda Nead reviews the first major retrospective of the Pre-Raphaelite painter JW Waterhouse since the 1970s. One of the most successful and critically praised Victorian artists, his The Lady of Shalott has become an iconic image reproduced on countless posters and calendars.

WED 21:15 Night Waves (b00l8t8r)
Civilisation

Bidisha looks at what it means to be civilised, and asks whether civilisation is an outdated concept. She talks to philosopher John Armstrong, who calls for a new debate about civilisation. According to Armstrong, we no longer talk seriously about civilisation.

The idea has been tainted by history, he argues, being eagerly invoked to justify colonial expansion. The view that industrially developed countries had a mission to rule less developed societies was facilitated by deployment of the term 'civilisation'. More recently, in an effort to get America to back the war in Iraq, George W Bush talked of 'a struggle for civilisation'.

Armstrong champions an unfashionable campaign to revive the meaning of civilisation. He argues that the idea is a way of reconnecting grand, societal forces - economic liberty and social freedom - which will lead to a cultural renaissance.

THU 21:15 Night Waves (b00l8tfn)
Landmarks - The Second Sex

Night Waves celebrates the bible of modern feminism - Simone De Beauvoir's The Second Sex - published 60 years ago.
In a Landmark edition, Rana Mitter discusses the book and its legacy with Germaine Greer, Christina Howells, Lisa Appignanesi, Carole Seymour-Jones and Julia Kristeva.
Beauvoir was one half of the most famous intellectual couple of the twentieth century - her partner being Jean Paul Sartre. She often used her complex relationship with Sartre - which included ménage à trois and numerous lovers on both sides - as inspiration for her work.
In The Second Sex, Beauvoir argued that "one is not born a woman, but becomes one". Throughout history, she said, women have been defined as the "other" sex, the "second sex", and an aberration from the "normal" male sex. With these arguments Beauvoir led the way towards the explosion of new wave of feminism after 1968.
Now, at a time when feminism's future is in the balance, Rana Mitter and guests ask what has The Second Sex got to say about gender politics today? (Rpt)

Producer: Timothy Prosser.

FRI 21:15 The Verb (b00l8tn8)
Ian McMillan's guests include novelist Niven Govinden, author of Graffiti My Soul, with a new short story written specially for the programme. Resting is a tale from the dark side of celebrity culture, in which a young woman tries to recover a once-dazzling career. Her finances frozen, kept under virtual house arrest and under the watchful eyes of a shadowy minder, she waits for the day when her paymasters will let her resume her former life.

Verb language spy Alex Horne reflects on the vagaries of onomatopoeia around the word - why do the French say tick-tac to imitate a clock and not tick-tock?

Poetry Lab continues as part of the BBC's Poetry Season, with Paul Farley answering questions from poetry students on how to master the art of description. And novelist and songwriter Linda Robertson sings some sharply funny, sad tales.
