Melodia

Lucie Skeaping talks to Arni Ingolfsson about one of the most important surviving Icelandic music manuscripts, Melodia or Rask 98, which was written around 1660 by an unknown scribe. It contains 223 songs, more than any other Icelandic collection, and many of them are unique to this source.

Ingolfsson also founded the vocal ensemble Carmina, who specialise in Renaissance polyphony. The programme includes some of their recordings of music from Rask 98 and other Icelandic manuscripts.

Art and Early Music Month

King's College, Cambridge Stained Glass

As part of "Art and Early Music" month, Lucie Skeaping visits the Chapel of King's College, Cambridge and talks to the writer and art historian Carola Hicks about the magnificent stained glass. They explore some of the background to stained glass, how it came to England from Flanders, why the Chapel and the glass took so long to complete, and how the glass symbolises the power of the Tudors and their era of great change and turbulence; ideas that are reflected in the music in the programme, including recordings of the Choir of King's College, Cambridge in repertoire by Tallis, and also sacred and secular music from the 15th and early 16th centuries. Dr. Carola Hicks is the author of the book The King's Glass.

Amos Oz

Rana Mitter presents an extended conversation with celebrated Israeli writer and academic Amos Oz, author of novels such as Black Box and Don't Call it Night - works which established his name.

He has also written essays on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, literary criticism and his memoir - A Tale of Love and Darkness.

Oz is continually canvassed by international onlookers at moments of political turbulence in his home region, such as the one experienced during Israel's offensive against Hamas in Gaza in 2008/09. In his latest book, Rhyming Life and Death, he gives a wry account of a writer's relationship to his audience and the delicate balance between fiction and autobiography.

TUE 23:00 The Essay (b00hr5lb)
Head in the Clouds

A Rent in the Clouds

In a series tracing the role of clouds in art, architecture and the cultural imagination, architectural historian Robert Harbison considers the obsessive fascination with clouds in the baroque period.

He explores the depiction of ever-expanding spaces, as architects tried to realise this vision with elaborate cloud-ceilings and extravagant multi-media designs. Harbison describes the experience of standing in these buildings that to him seem part-earthly material and part-cloud.

Head in the Clouds

Thought-Cloud

In a series tracing the role of clouds in the arts and architecture, writer, critic and translator Professor Esther Leslie examines the image of the clouds as a model of thought and the imagination itself: from the sublime of Immanuel Kant to the ridiculous of comic strip thought-clouds.

She also recounts various ill-fated attempts in the past to project thoughts, ideas, messages and sales-pitches on to the clouds themselves.

As I Went to Walsingham

Part 1

From St Paul's Church, Knightsbridge in London. Presented by Catherine Bott.

The BBC Singers, conducted by Peter Philips, explore the sacred music of the Tudor period, featuring some of the English composers who weathered the storm as the church swung violently between Catholic and Protestant regimes. The concert title - As I went to Walsingham - comes from a folk tune commemorating England's greatest Catholic shrine, ruthlessly destroyed by Henry VIII.

The programme celebrates the music of some of the greatest Catholic composers of the era and includes an elaborate motet in praise of the Virgin Mary by William Mundy, examples of Latin church music by Thomas Tallis and John Sheppard, and pieces by William Byrd and Philippe de Monte, which are coded messages of despair and support for the plight of English Catholics.

As I Went to Walsingham

Sean Street is joined by Eamon Duffy, Professor of the History of Christianity at Cambridge University, to tell the story of the Norfolk village of Walsingham and explore its reputation as 'The English Nazareth'. Its name was given to the famous song of Pilgrimage As I Went to Walsingham.

Through music, poetry, prayers and 16th-century accounts, they explore the historical and contemporary significance of pilgrimage, and also talk to monks, pilgrims, shopkeepers and the landlord of the pub that once was set on fire - by pilgrims. The duo also visit the site of Richeldis' original shrine, the Slipper Chapel - where people still come today to cast off their shoes to complete their journey barefoot - and the Anglican shrine with its replica of the Holy House.

Walsingham first came to prominence in 1061, when Richeldis de Faverches, wife of the lord of the manor, was taken in a vision to Nazareth and commanded by the Virgin to build a replica in Norfolk of the Holy House of the Annunciation. Just under a century later, Augustinian canons built a priory beside the 'Holy House' and the cult of Walsingham grew up, with visits from monarchs such as Edward I, Queen Anne and Henry VIII.
