In a special edition to mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of Puccini, Tom Service visits some of the locations in Tuscany that meant so much to the composer, even when he had achieved international stardom. In the company of musicologist Roger Parker, he assesses Puccini's legacy, the reception of his music a century ago and now, his complicated relationships with women and their impact on the operas, and the importance of his works in the Italian opera scene after Verdi.
Lucie Skeaping presents a programme devoted to Euripedes' great tragedy of Medea, and the setting by the French composer Charpentier. Charpentier was very much over-shadowed by his famous contemporary Lully, and it is really only in the last few decades that this opera has been rediscovered; the music is considered some of Charpentier's most magnificent and colourful, and one can only imagine the spectacle the drama created through its use of stage machinery and fireworks in the 17th century!
‘Pour flatter mes ennuis’ ( To assuage my troubles, if only I could believe you)
‘Que je serois heureux, si j'étais moins aimé’ (How happy I should be if I were loved less)
‘Seigneur, la Thessalie attaquant vos Estats’ ( Sire with Thessaly attacking your domain)
‘Princesse, c'est sur vous que mon espoir se fonde’ ( Princess, 'tis upon you my hopes are founded)
Act 3 sc iv: Médée lamenting her fate. Prepares poison…. Chorus of demons
‘Croiras-tu mon malheur’ ( Can you believe in my misfortunes) to end of ‘Je vois le don fatal’ ( I see the fatal gift demanded by my rival)
From the Wigmore Hall, London. Presented by Sarah Walker.
Holst: Vedic Hymns, Op 24 (Nos 1, 3, 6, 9); Humbert-Wolfe settings, Op 48 (Nos 6, 12)

Moshe Morad visits the childhood home of Jesus, Nazareth, meeting members of the Joubran musical dynasty, visiting their oud factory and meeting the Nazareth Arabic orchestra. Plus a recording from the 2008 Jerusalem Oud Festival of Nazareth-born Dalal Abu Amana, who performs her songs in a special Palestinian dialect unique to Galilee.
Saxophonist and author Dave Gelly joins Alyn Shipton to suggest the essential Count Basie band recordings, tracing it from its Kansas City origins through to the revolutionary New Testament band of the 1950s, including such classics as One O'Clock Jump and Li'l Darlin'.
Basie led his famous orchestra for more than 50 years, and in its long history it grew to being regarded as a byword for the qualities of swing and the blues.
Soprano Renee Fleming brings one of her most celebrated roles to New York's Metropolitan Opera House for the first time in a performance of Massenet's exotic drama of love and redemption.
Based on a tale initially written down by a 10th-century nun, the opera tells the story of the monk Athanael and his ultimately tragic desire for the Alexandrian courtesan Thais.
Presented by Margaret Juntwait with guest commentator Ira Siff. The two intervals include backstage interviews.

Birdsong
Birdsong has fascinated poets and musicians for centuries. This poetry selection spans 700 years, from Dafydd ap Gwilym's 14th-century hymn to the thrush to RS Thomas's more recent celebration of the blackbird, while the music ranges almost as far, from the Renaissance lute-song The dark is my delight to a section from Einojuhani Rautavaara's atmospheric Cantus arcticus, memorably enriched by the recorded sound of migrating swans.
With a pair of 'catalogues' (opening with Izaak Walton's inventory of the 'nimble musicians of the air'), but for the greater part have chosen to concentrate on those songsters who have inspired the most frequent creative effort. Most popular among them by far is the nightingale, the thrilling musician of the woods who reduces the other birds to silence with her brilliance in Blake's Milton, sings her traditional song of lost love in Richard Barnfield's As it fell upon a day, and offers encouragement to human lovers in a ravishing air from Rameau's opera Hippolyte et Aricie. For Leslie Norris the voice of 'the poet's bird' is both pleasure and torment, a spur to the creative act and a reproach to human inadequacy.
Not far behind is the skylark, whose ebullient airborne music - for many people the sound of the British summer - is here celebrated in an anonymous 17th-century poem and in music connecting its song to the cares of lovers from the English folk tradition and by Hoagy Carmichael.
Less virtuosic but no less irresistible to artists have been the cuckoo - the two-note herald of spring humorously imitated by Saint-Saens and argued over in words by Wordsworth and Bunyan - and the owl, whose comforting and disturbing contributions to the soundscape of the winter night are evoked by Edward Thomas and in Dominick Argento's setting of lines from Love's Labour's Lost.
Other composers and poets have essayed more demanding birdsong imitations: Olivier Messiaen's intricately notated representations became a vital part of his own creative personality; Gerard Manley Hopkins ambitiously attempts a verbal characterisation of a woodlark.
Few of these skilful impressions would count for much without some wider resonance. We have seen that birdsong both marks out the seasons and reminds us of our humble place in the natural world. But above all, and as all the poets and composers represented in this programme have recognised, birdsong also touches something deep in our hearts, unstopping the streams of love, longing, memory, joy, laughter and melancholy that lie within us all.

Prom 32: BBC Singers
From the Royal Albert Hall, London. Presented by Suzy Klein.
James O'Donnell puts the organ of the Royal Albert Hall through its paces in one of the landmarks of 20th-century repertoire for the instrument, Messiaen's Messe de la Pentecôte, which draws musical inspiration from birdsong and concludes with a shattering depiction of pentecostal tongues of fire engulfing the Apostles. Alongside it, sacred French music for the same church feast from an earlier tradition: a Renaissance mass by Pierre de Manchicourt, a composer who, though little known today, ended his life as master of the royal chapel of Philip II of Spain and who no less a figure than Orlando Lassus called a 'distinguished and excellent composer of music'.

Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924)
Elvira
Puccini's elopement with one of his pupils, Elvira Gemignani, had lasting consequences. A married woman with two children, Elvira took a brave leap when she ran off with him.
Having survived the ensuing scandal, the couple conducted their relationship in a fashion which, for most of their friends and colleagues, defied comprehension. Yet despite Puccini's frequent infidelities and her obsessive jealousy, they remained together until his death in 1924.

Prom 63: Motets, chansons ragas, Messiaen
From the Royal Albert Hall, London. Presented by Martin Handley.
A performance of Messiaen's Cinq rechants - a work which draws its inspiration from a mixture of Sanskrit texts, traditional Indian rhythms, Renaissance polyphony and ancient tales and mythology, creating a sensual, vocally virtuosic and highly charged synthesis of styles and language.
The opening sequence likewise weaves together music of the East and West. Nishat Khan joins the BBC Singers in a short sequence of French Renaissance motets and chansons - exploring the season of spring and the erotic imagery associated with it - woven around improvised classical Indian ragas, echoing the mood of Messiaen.
And Nishat Khan concludes the programme with a selection of night ragas, chosen according to the mood of the occasion.
Motets and chansons by Claudin de Sermisy, Jean Richafort, Antoine Brumel and Claude Le Jeune, interspersed with Indian ragas

Puccini's World
Donald Macleod explores how the beginning of the 20th century saw Puccini searching for a new dramatic direction. The world around him was changing and he was feeling distinctly out of step. On the one hand he was seen as the successor to Verdi, while on the other his detractors felt his music had no Italian character whatsoever.

Rabbi Dr Tony Bayfield
Joan Bakewell talks to the head of Britain's Reform Jewish community, Rabbi Dr Tony Bayfield, who has devoted his life to challenging those who claim to have a monopoly on truth. He talks openly about the Holocaust survivors who taught him at theological college, the place of converts within Judaism and how his training and work as a Rabbi left him utterly unprepared for the untimely death of his wife.
Rabbi Bayfield has focused strongly on promoting Jewish-Christian-Muslim dialogue as well as criticising all forms of fundamentalism. In 2008, he spearheaded a commitment to collaborate with other branches of Judaism in an attempt to embrace diversity and pluralism and reduce in-fighting. His stance has seen him publicly oppose his friend of 40 years, Britain's Chief Rabbi Sir Jonathan Sacks. Yet that friendship remains, despite the passionate theological divide.
