SAT 12:15 Music Matters (b00f0bhs)
Petroc Trelawny talks to leading American composer John Adams about his new musical memoir Hallelujah Junction, and how he has been blacklisted by US security for the perceived morality of his political stage works. Authors David Huckvale, Peter Dickinson and Adrian Wright review each other's recent books on the composers Lord Berners and William Alwyn and about the British composers who composed music for Hammer horror films. And as a rare Stradivarius cello, expected to fetch over one million pounds, is about to be auctioned online, Petroc investigates the phenomenal prices such instruments command and asks who is buying them.

An all Vivaldi concert
Catherine Bott presents higjhlights of an all Vivaldi concert, recorded earlier this year from the Music Festival Potsdam Sanssouci, performed by Fabio Biondi and his ensemble Europa Galante. The theme of the festival was 'Venice – musica serenissima' a survey of '500 years of musical life in the city of the lagoon'. The Artistic Director Andrea Palent said fo the Festival that, 'we want to show how Venice had been a distinguished and outstanding European musical metropolis a long time before and certainly after Vivaldi, where opera and concert life were flourishing as well as the manufacture of musical instruments and the printing of sheet music.' The programme includes a couple of arias sung by the mezzo Marina de Liso, and various concerti including the much-loved mandolin concerto played by Sonia Maurer. The concert was recorded by the European Broadcasting Union.

Eighteenth-Century Tchaikovsky
Charles Hazlewood is joined by the BBC Philharmonic and cellist Robert Cohen to explore two of Tchaikovsky's 18th century-inspired works - the Rococo Variations and the orchestral suite Mozartiana. Tchaikovsky's music appears to embody the romantic passions and storms of the his age, but the composer himself often took solace reflecting idealistically on the sensibilities of the 18th century and in particular on his beloved Mozart.

Byzantium
To coincide with an exhibition at the Royal Academy, Prof Judith Herrin visits Istanbul to trace the history of the Roman city of Byzantium and examine the crucial role it played in the development of Europe. She explores how Byzantine civilisation made possible Europe's transition to modernity; the fact that it has no modern successor state; how it combined Christianity with ancient Greek learning and Roman imperial ideology; and its systems of government, laws, taxes, education and defence.

Black Watch
A radio version of the National Theatre of Scotland's award-winning theatre production, Black Watch is based on interviews conducted by Gregory Burke with former soldiers who served in the second war in Iraq.
Hurtling from a pool room in Fife to an armoured wagon in Iraq, the action is viewed through the eyes of those on the ground and reveals what it means to be part of this venerable Scottish regiment and the war on terror.
The play contains very strong language.

Wild Wood
What could be more unsettling than the darkness seeping like sump oil from beneath the branches of a pine forest? What's more likely to give imagination wings than a big wind catching at the green sails of a huge chestnut grove? The Wild Wood bewitches as it bewilders. This was the starting point when I began to think about this evening's edition of Words and Music. I wanted to give a sense of both. I also wanted to suggest how the wild wood is with us from the very beginning, from the time when we listen, rapt, to a bed time story such as Wind in the Willows to that moment in anxious adulthood when, like Dante, we look back and wonder how we came to be lost in the dark wood of our lives. The programme is a kind of journey, beginning with Mole's first encounter with untamed nature and ending with his rescue. The way in which his youthful confidence gives way to speculation and inquiry is reflected in the path the programme takes - where and how did the woods come into being, what gives them their power.

MON 19:00 Performance on 3 (b00f124v)
Suzy Klein introduces a performance given by the London Symphony Orchestra featuring music by Boulez, Messiaen and Bruckner.
Including Boulez's Livre pour cordes, which the composer based on one of his early works for string quartet, and revised it into an intimate, rhythmically complex piece for string orchestra. Soprano Sally Matthews joins the orchestra in one of the most voluptuous song cycles in French music: Mi was Messiaen's nickname for his wife and Poemes pour Mi is a musical love letter, a lyrical song cycle celebrating marriage. Bruckner himself described his Fourth Symphony as 'Romantic'. Much revised before finding enduring success in 1881, it evokes a richly harmonic fairytale landscape of castles and woodlands.

The John Escreet Project from the CBSO Centre, Birmingham
Jez Nelson presents a gig by pianist John Escreet recorded at Birmingham's CBSO Centre in October 2008. Playing original music, Escreet's group features New York alto saxophonist David Binney who won both Downbeat's critics' and readers' polls in 2007. Escreet has become one of the most sought-after players on the contemporary New York scene through his lyrical, yet modern approach to jazz.
Escreet was born in Doncaster and studied music in the UK, but moved to New York in 2006 to undertake a Master's degree at the Manhattan School of Music, where Kenny Barron and Jason Moran taught him. Since then he has led several of his own groups as well as performing with some of New York's best musicians, including Will Vinson, Marcus Gilmore and Wayne Krantz.

Historian Bettany Hughes discusses the Royal Academy's exhibition devoted to art and objects from Byzantium, including icons, wall paintings, mosaics and silver metalwork.
And as social psychologists at the London School of Economics claim to be developing ways of measuring cynicism, Rana asks how they can measure this, and if, as some say, it's on the increase, whether this is necessarily bad for society.

Aaron Copland
Episode 4
Donald Macleod considers Copland's relationship with Hollywood, where he contributed a number of significant film scores. The composer got his foot in the door there in the late 1930s, with his music for a small documentary called The City, which brought him an invitation to score the film version of Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men. Its two Academy Award nominations led to another movie commission, which Copland turned down, although he eventually composed four more scores.

Suzy Klein introduces the Scottish Chamber Orchestra in a programme of premieres by Brett Dean and Karin Rehnqvist, alongside elegiac miniatures by Takemitsu.
Spiritual depth and brooding drama mark Rehnqvist's music, and her new work is a type of requiem, though reflecting hope and consolation as much as the darker aspects of loss. It is matched with elegiac miniatures by the great Japanese composer Toru Takemitsu and Australian composer Brett Dean's own moving Requiem for a changing world - music inspired by Beethoven's Sixth Symphony and filled with birdsong.
