Lucie Skeaping presents a programme devoted to Euripedes' great tragedy of Medea, and the setting by the French composer Charpentier. Charpentier was very much over-shadowed by his famous contemporary Lully, and it is really only in the last few decades that this opera has been rediscovered; the music is considered some of Charpentier's most magnificent and colourful, and one can only imagine the spectacle the drama created through its use of stage machinery and fireworks in the 17th century!

Episode 4

During the BBC Symphony Orchestra's Gubaidulina Weekend in January 2007, the Royal String Quartet performed all four of Gubaidulina's unique quartets at St Giles, Cripplegate, in London's Barbican Centre. Now aged 76, Sofia Gubaidulina lived through the Soviet era, maintaining her artistic integrity in astonishingly powerful music inspired by her profound Russian Orthodox faith.

4/4. In Quartet No 3, written in 1987, it's only halfway through the 15 minute work that the players discover their bows!

Starting at Westminster Abbey to survey Handel's decorative tomb, he is then joined by Lewis Foreman for a stroll along Whitehall to the historic Banqueting House and Queen Mary's Steps on the River Thames, where the royal party of 1717 departed for the famous performance of the Water Music. The final stop is the Chapel Royal at St James's Palace, for which Handel composed a birthday ode for Queen Anne.

In a special programme recorded in front of an audience at the Free Thinking Festival in Liverpool, a panel including playwright Alan Bleasdale and veteran producer Michael Wearing re-examine one of British television's most celebrated dramas, Boys from the Blackstuff.

First shown in 1982, it was a remarkable hit, with catchphrases and characters that caught the mood of the nation at a time of high unemployment and social unrest. It also changed forever the careers of writer Alan Bleasdale and producer Michael Wearing, as well as establishing actors Bernard Hill, Julie Walters and Michael Angelis in the public mind.
