SUN 21:00 The Fairy-Tale Castles of King Ludwig II with Dan Cruickshank (b036f9vc)
Ludwig II of Bavaria, more commonly known by his nicknames the Swan King or the Dream King, is a legendary figure - the handsome boy-king, loved by his people, betrayed by his cabinet and found dead in tragic and mysterious circumstances. He spent his life in pursuit of the ideal of beauty, which found expression in three of the most extraordinary, ornate architectural schemes imaginable - the castle of Neuschwanstein and the palaces of Linderhof and Herrenchiemsee. Today, these three buildings are among Germany's biggest tourist attractions.
In this documentary, Dan Cruickshank explores the rich aesthetic of Ludwig II - from the mock-medievalism of Neuschwanstein, the iconic fairy-tale castle that became the inspiration for the one in Walt Disney's Sleeping Beauty, to the rich, baroque splendour of Herrenchiemsee, Ludwig's answer to Versailles. Dan argues that Ludwig's castles are more than flamboyant kitsch and are, in fact, the key to unravelling the eternal enigma of Ludwig II.
SUN 22:00 Remembers... (m002q94s)
Richard Eyre Remembers... Ibsen
With a career spanning seven decades, acclaimed theatre, film and TV director Richard Eyre has been involved in a number of hugely successful Ibsen productions. His adaptation of Ghosts in 2013 won him the Evening Standard Best Director award. He directed John Gabriel Borkman for the National, starring Paul Schofield and Vanessa Redgrave, and a notable Hedda Gabler with Eve Best, again adapted by Richard. Thus, he is perfectly placed to give us an introduction to this complex yet still very relevant playwright.
Richard talks about how much contemporary drama owes to Ibsen and about the key characters - Nora in A Doll’s House and Mrs Alving in Ghosts - and how their depictions were drawn from the playwright’s own experience and world view. He also discusses the darkness in Ibsen’s subject matter, how he was often vilified when his plays were first performed. Yet it is this bravery that has kept the plays relevant and a mainstay of the arts world to this day.
SUN 22:15 Ibsen (m002q7n4)

It presents its founders and tells the story of how three young Indigenous Australian brothers – Stephen, David and Russell Page – turned the newly born dance group into a First Nations cultural powerhouse.
Through the eyes of the brothers and company alumni, the film explores the loss and reclaiming of culture, the burden of intergenerational trauma and – crucially – the power of art as a messenger for social change and healing.

MON 22:00 I Am Martin Parr (m002j0v1)
Who are you, Martin Parr? Since the 1970s, Martin Parr has fearlessly held out his unique photographic mirror and given us some of the most extraordinary and unique visual clichés of modern times.
We follow this tireless adventurer on a road trip, his camera trigger finger always at the ready to capture the smallest details of everyday life. Sometimes serious, often absurd but always playful, his work has been a subject of debate and discussion. His images often amuse and entertain those who witness them, yet he makes us feel slightly uncomfortable, caught between a silent laugh and the frightful realisation of recognising ourselves in his uncompromising portrait of consumerist society.
Featuring interviews with various individuals who have crossed paths with Martin Parr, including close family, fellow photographers, artists and filmmakers, the documentary offers a dynamic, intimate and well-rounded portrait of the artist. While Martin Parr's work is now showcased globally, his early photography faced challenges and criticism. Why? Perhaps, in retrospect, he was highlighting aspects of class in Britain that were often overlooked. Could it be that provoking discomfort was precisely his intention? Why this use of garish colour, previously reserved for advertising and fashion?
Here, we bring to life Parr's distinctive photographic language and showcase his incredible eye for the absurd. Bright, colourful and saturated, the film takes us into Parr's world. From Bristol, where he lives and has set up his incredible foundation, to the seaside resort of New Brighton, where he returns with us after 40 years to reshoot his most famous work, The Last Resort, I Am Martin Parr is a portrait of an extraordinary photographer who revolutionized contemporary photography.

It was the foundation of all modern electronic colour television.
In a lifetime blighted with ill health, JLB - as he was known - produced 178 patents crucial to the technology that would define the 20th century. But since his early death in 1946, his achievements have been allowed to slip from view, obscured by ignorance about what he pioneered.
Few are aware that much of his greatest work was done in complete seclusion, in his personal laboratory and entirely at his own expense.

WED 00:00 Sleuths, Spies & Sorcerers: Andrew Marr's Paperback Heroes (p040pvpp)
Detectives
In the first episode of a series that explores the books we (really) read, Andrew Marr investigates the curious case of detective fiction. This is a genre that been producing best-sellers since the 19th century, and whose most famous heroes - Sherlock Holmes, Hercule Poirot, Inspector Rebus - are now embedded in our collective psyche. But how does detective fiction work- and how do the best crime writers keep us compulsively turning the pages?
Andrew deconstructs detective stories by looking at their 'rules' - the conventions we expect to be present when we pick up a typical mystery. Because detective fiction is an interactive puzzle, these rules are the rules of a game - a fiendish battle of wits between the reader and the writer. What is remarkable is that instead of restricting novelists (as you might expect), these rules stimulate creativity, and Andrew reveals how clever writers like Agatha Christie have used them to create a seemingly infinite number of story-telling possibilities.
The fictional detective is a brilliant invention, a figure who takes us to (often dark) places that we wouldn't normally visit. While we are in their company, no section of society is off-limits or above suspicion, and Andrew shows how writers have used crime fiction not merely to entertain, but also to anatomise society's problems.
Andrew interviews modern-day crime writers including Ian Rankin, Sophie Hannah and Val McDermid, while profiling important pioneers such as Agatha Christie, Dashiell Hammett and Ruth Rendell. Along the way, he decodes various great set-pieces of the detective novel such as Hercule Poirot's drawing room denouements, and the 'locked room' mysteries of John Dickson Carr.

FRI 01:10 Carole King: Home Again - Live in Central Park (m001l5ck)
On Saturday May 26, 1973, before more than 100,000 fans on the Great Lawn of Central Park in New York City, singer-songwriter Carole King, at the undeniable top of her game, enjoyed a humbling homecoming a mere 14 miles from the house in Brooklyn where she grew up. The historic event highlighted the earth-moving power she had unleashed with her watershed Tapestry (already being touted as one of the highest selling albums in history a mere two years after its release), all the way through her soon-to-be released song-cycle album Fantasy, (her fourth consecutive album to land in Billboard’s Top Ten). Carole King’s performance that day was, according to Jack Nicholson, one of only two current events “proper” to be seen at in public.
Carole King Home Again is a previously unseen concert recording and a stunning document of one of the greatest contributors to the American songbook. Professionally filmed on 16mm film, this concert is presented with a new scan and full restoration, and in its entirety the visual tableaux of the concert absolutely shines. Kicking off the show solo by expressing gratitude that a threatening storm had held off, the first portion of the performance highlights recent songs that were nigh-canonical at this point, from Beautiful to Smackwater Jack to It’s Too Late. Carole’s deft piano and voice accompaniment is both enrapturing and riveting.
Later joined by her 11 piece band, all bedecked in customized St. Louis Blues hockey jerseys, the second half of the gig is resplendent and lush, highlighting the bulk of the songs from Fantasy, and overall, the epitome of a crack band gelling on the material and connecting with the audience. Closing out the evening with You’ve Got a Friend, dedicated to dear friend James Taylor, the overall feeling conveyed here is simple: joy.
FRI 02:30 Carole King and Her Songs at the BBC (m001l5ch)
She was just 17 when she wrote the pop classic Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow - a calling card that over the years Carole King has delivered on time and time again. The most successful female singer-songwriter of all time, and one of modern music’s standout geniuses, Carole’s catalogue of hits, many written with her songwriting partner and first husband Gerry Goffin for both herself and some of pop and rock’s biggest stars, is second to none.
This celebration of the best of Carole King features a collection of irresistible performances from her and a range of other great artists, taken from a selection of BBC shows from over the decades.
