African Penguin: Cool Bird in a Hot Spot

David Attenborough narrates a programme which follows several thousand pioneering young penguins as they invade Boulders Beach, a busy resort in Cape Town, in an attempt to establish a new colony amid the striped umbrellas and sun loungers.

SUN 19:15 Jane Goodall: Beauty and the Beasts (b00v9j22)
In 1960, a young secretary from Bournemouth, with no scientific qualifications, entered a remote forest in Africa and achieved something nobody else had ever done before. Jane Goodall became accepted by a group of wild chimpanzees, making discoveries that transformed our understanding of them, and challenged the way we define ourselves as human beings by showing just how close we are as a species to our nearest living relatives.

Since then, both she and the chimps of Gombe in Tanzania have become world famous - Jane as the beauty of many wildlife films, they as the beasts with something profound to tell us. As one of the programme's contributors, David Attenborough, suggests, Jane Goodall's story could be a fable if it wasn't true.

In this revealing programme filmed with Jane Goodall in Africa, we discover the person behind the myth, what motivates her and the personal cost her life's work has exacted from her - and why she still thinks we have a lot to learn from the chimps she has devoted her life to understanding.

SUN 20:15 Wogan (m001xynt)

There are also sumptuous works by John Taverner, Will Todd and Arvo Pärt in his 90th birthday year.

The Sixteen is led by conductor Harry Christophers. Presented by Hannah French.

SUN 22:00 Remembers... (m002l6s7)
Lord Mervyn King Remembers... The Age of Uncertainty

Former governor of the Bank of England Mervyn King looks back on the BBC’s 1977 series on the history of economic thinking, The Age of Uncertainty.

Written and presented by the highly influential economist and intellectual JK Galbraith, the series tackled the challenge of bringing economics to a mainstream audience head-on, seemingly sparing no expense in its use of actors, elaborate sets and multiple international locations - and even a sumptuous banquet for dogs - to help explain some highly complex thinking.

Lord King, who encountered Galbraith whilst studying at Cambridge, gives an assessment of the series five decades on from its original transmission, sharing his opinion of Galbraith and his methods today and explaining why the series divided critics at the time: attacked by the political right, including Margaret Thatcher and the Daily Telegraph, but held up as an example of the BBC at its best by others.

SUN 22:20 The Age of Uncertainty (m002l6s9)
Series 1

1. The Prophets and Promise of Classical Capitalism

John Kenneth Galbraith tells the story of the men who laid the foundations of economics, including Adam Smith, David Ricardo and Thomas Malthus. What they made of the world of their time profoundly affects our world.

SUN 23:15 The Age of Uncertainty (m002l6sf)
Series 1

2. The Manners and Morals of High Capitalism

Professor Galbraith looks at the ideas that sustained the rich in the 19th century and how they still affect our attitudes today. Herbert Spencer justified the moneymaking in straight Darwinian terms as 'survival of the fittest'. Thorstein Veblen thought a parallel with Papuans a more appropriate one.

Appealing to both adults and children alike, his books have sold over 20 million copies and have been translated into 40 languages. La Belle Sauvage, his recent novel, became an instant bestseller. 'The things we need most in the world are stories,' he says.

MON 19:00 Fred Dibnah's Building of Britain (b0074n9y)
Victorian Splendour

In the final programme of the series uncovering the construction and engineering skills that went into the building of Britain, Fred Dibnah indulges his personal passion for the achievements of the builders of the 19th century.

At Eastnor Castle in Herefordshire, a young architect called Robert Smirke was commissioned to build a grand house that was as big and impressive as a great medieval castle. As Fred demonstrates, steam-powered machinery made this possible in a fraction of the time - if not the cost - involved originally.

Eastnor also provides an introduction to the work of architect and designer Augustus Welby Pugin, who was inspired by medieval Gothic architecture. At St Giles in Cheadle, Staffordshire, Fred examines one of Pugin's best Gothic works, achieved thanks to one of the finest teams of craftsmen that have ever been seen in the building of Britain. The building with which Pugin is most commonly associated is the Palace of Westminster, where he worked alongside fellow architect Sir Charles Barry. Fred reveals how the two men came up with a building that matched the medieval Westminster Abbey next door, as well as demonstrating how the builders overcame the challenges posed by the riverbank location.

Fred's final stop on this epic journey sees him scaling the heights again, this time inside the Westminster clock tower - the one we call Big Ben - where he reveals what makes the country's best-known clock tick to time and how the huge bell was originally constructed.

MON 19:30 The Channel Tunnel - Life on the Inside (m0008ls4)
Series 1

What Goes Around...

After 25 years in business, Eurotunnel is at a junction, with many of its staff facing retirement and new recruits being drafted in. And the next batch of wannabe shuttle drivers has just arrived for the first round of testing. The tests, however, are ruthless, with a 90% fail rate, so who will make it through?

Meanwhile the passenger comings and goings never stop and the summer is the busiest time of all, with super cars arriving in convoy for the Le Mans 24 hour race. But as the French step up their passport controls, and the screens jam at the Terminal Control Centre, will the supercars make it to France on time?

We also find out how the teams cope with 'no tarmac day', the busiest day of the year, when the schools break up and 10,200 cars head for the tunnel. Then we take a rollercoaster ride through the tunnel with train drivers Tash and Steve, who show us why the undersea geology makes the tunnel bend.

Inside the world’s biggest train shed in Calais, we see how maintenance teams keep the locomotives running. Back in Folkestone, we meet the UK team hard at work in the slightly smaller UK shed. Why do they love sheds? How come they don’t want to retire? And why is it that some of the staff are more concerned with Pexit than Brexit?

WED 21:00 Thatcher: A Very British Revolution (m0005wyb)
Series 1

That Bloody Woman

Mrs Thatcher and her government seek to transform the British economy, with far-reaching consequences.

Tensions surface amongst her closest allies as she seeks to improve her public image, and events reveal that the Iron Lady has emotional vulnerabilities in relation to her family.

Mrs Thatcher’s reputation amongst some sections of the public is poor. Her forthright style, such as telling the press not to be “moaning minnies” about unemployment when visiting north east England, has led to her being viewed as domineering and unsympathetic. In an embarrassing TV interview she is told that this issue is referred to within her own party as the TBW factor (“that bloody woman”). When colleagues attempt to discuss this problem she becomes angry at the Conservative central office team who bring her the news.

In an attempt to present a softer image Mrs Thatcher opens the doors of Downing Street to cameras and interviewers. Quizzed by Miriam Stoppard about her family, Mrs Thatcher offers insights into her modest upbringing in Grantham and in a startling moment is moved to tears when discussing her father and his departure from his senior position on the local council. The interview also raises questions about her own role as a mother and how she has balanced this with her political career. Her vulnerabilities around family are further exposed when the press ask questions about whether business deals her son is involved in create conflicts of interest.

Meanwhile, her government embarks on a radical transformation of the British economy. Mrs Thatcher is determined that Britain will embrace the free market and entrepreneurship. A programme of privatisation is underway that takes major nationalised industries into the private sector and offers millions of people the opportunity to own shares. It is a hallmark policy that will define the Thatcher years. Additionally, Mrs Thatcher greenlights a transformation of the operations of the City of London. Trading restrictions are lifted and regulation relaxed in the “Big Bang” that will bring a flood of new money into the City and a new generation of young, ambitious financiers. Many find the explosion of wealth and extravagance distasteful and damaging.

As the 1987 election approaches there are serious tensions inside the Conservative Party. Disagreements about strategy and personal differences between some of Mrs Thatcher’s closest advisors have been building. Mrs Thatcher is becoming suspicious of her party colleagues and closer to her inner circle of civil servants and specially appointed advisors. These tensions break out during the 1987 election campaign when polls seem to suggest that Labour are closing on the Conservatives and threatening to deny Mrs Thatcher a third victory. After explosive rows Mrs Thatcher asserts her authority and leads the campaign. When the results come in she has won another landslide victory but relationships with some of her closest allies are damaged forever.

This episode features interviews with Conservative party officials Norman Tebbit and Michael Dobbs, press secretary Bernard Ingham, political secretary Stephen Sherbourne, personal assistant Cynthia Crawford, cabinet member Lord Young, MPs Matthew Parris and Jonathan Aitken and senior civil servants Robin Butler, Charles Powell and Tim Lankester, as well as opposition leader Neil Kinnock and journalist Miriam Stoppard.

WED 22:00 Margaret (b00hy18h)
Drama charting Margaret Thatcher's astonishing fall from power, one of the most extraordinary stories of political assassination the world has seen. It took only 11 days for Thatcher to go from being the most powerful woman in the world to the tearful figure in the back of the car - a major tragedy in the true Shakespearean sense. We watch a woman lose the one thing she really cares about - power - changing from leader to victim before our eyes.

12 November 1990: As Thatcher prepares for her speech at the Lord Mayor's banquet at the Guildhall, Geoffrey Howe, her quietly spoken former foreign secretary and chancellor, pens the resignation speech that will stun the country and seal her fate. The next day, Howe makes his lethal speech in the Houses of Parliament, and the final ten days of Margaret Thatcher's reign begin.
