When Major Palgrave, the hotel bore, is found dead in the doorway of his cottage, everyone except Miss Marple accepts that he has died of natural causes. During the postmortem examination, it is found that the major was indeed poisoned. Victoria Johnson is also found murdered with a kitchen knife in her chest.

It is time for Miss Marple to join forces with the police in order to solve the mystery and prevent a third murder.

The Expanding Universe

The team explores one of the greatest discoveries of modern astronomy - that our universe is expanding - and the new questions it raises about how the cosmos works.

In the 1920s, astronomers studying galaxies realised they were moving away from us, with the most distant ones receding the fastest. The
conclusion was revolutionary: space itself was stretching, and the universe was expanding in every direction. But once this discovery was made, a new challenge emerged – how fast is the universe expanding, and what could that tell us about its age, size and ultimate fate?

Chris Lintott travels to the University of Oxford to explore one of the most extraordinary tools astronomers use to answer these questions - the cosmic microwave background (CMB), the faint afterglow of the Big Bang. Working with Professor David Alonso, Chris learns how scientists use the CMB as a starting point for measuring cosmic expansion. He discovers how the Simons Observatory, a network of telescopes in Chile, is creating the sharpest map yet of this ancient light. These observations promise to refine our understanding of the expansion rate and may shed light on a
long-standing puzzle known as the 'Hubble tension', where different measurements of expansion don’t agree.

Meanwhile, Maggie Aderin-Pocock investigates a different cosmic speedometer: supernovae, or exploding stars. Meeting Dr Philip Wiseman at the University of Southampton, she learns how type 1a supernovae, which shine with a predictable brightness, can be used to measure cosmic
distances. A discovery in the 1990s revealed something astonishing - not only is the universe expanding, but the expansion is accelerating. The
Vera Rubin Observatory, with its enormous mirror and world-record-breaking camera, is about to survey the southern skies, capturing supernovae in unprecedented numbers. With its data, astronomers hope to refine how fast the universe’s expansion has accelerated over billions of years.

George Dransfield takes on the most mysterious part of the story - dark energy. Coined to explain the force driving the acceleration, dark energy
remains entirely unknown. At the University of Portsmouth, George meets Dr Seshadri Nadathur, who is part of the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) project. By mapping tens of millions of galaxies across 11 billion years of cosmic history, DESI is building the largest 3D map of the universe ever made. This map is revealing subtle patterns in how galaxies are distributed, providing new insights into how fast the universe has expanded over time – and whether dark energy itself has changed throughout cosmic history. Together, these projects reveal both the power and the limits of our current models of cosmology. Different methods of measuring expansion don’t line up, and far from being a mistake, this mismatch may be a vital clue that new physics is waiting to be discovered.

As ever, Pete Lawrence is on hand with his guide to the skies this month, including how to catch Saturn’s rare ring and moon events, as well as
highlights of the autumn equinox.

With cosmic clues building from the earliest light of the Big Bang to the faint glow of distant supernovae, the programme takes you on a journey
through one of the most profound questions in science: how fast is our universe expanding, and what might that reveal about its past, present and future?

Seasonal Forests

David Attenborough's documentary series which celebrates our planet in all its eclectic wonder. He reveals the greatest woodlands on earth, from the evergreen forests of the frozen north to the deciduous dry forests of the equator.

The Taiga forest is a silent world of stunted conifers cloaked in snow and ice. The trees form a belt that circles the globe, broken only by ocean, and contains a third of all trees on earth. Here, animals are scarce, with just a few charismatic loners like the wolverine and lynx.

By contrast, the broadleaf forests of North America and Europe bustle with life. The most startling illustration happens just once every 17 years, when the nymphs of the periodical cicada burst from the soil in the biggest insect emergence on the planet.

In California, witness the cameras fly up the tallest trees on earth: giant redwoods over 100 metres high. See General Sherman, a giant sequoia, ten times the size of a blue whale, and the largest living thing on the planet. Close by are bristlecone pines, so old they pre-date the pyramids and were already 2,500 years old when Jesus Christ was born.

The baobab forests of Madagascar are the strangest of all. The bizarre upside down trees store water in their swollen trunks and harbour strange wildlife, such as the tiny mouse lemur, the world's smallest primate.

Nowhere in the British Isles was the Viking connection longer-lasting or deeper than in Scotland. Hundreds of years after their first hit-and-run raids, the Norsemen still dominated huge swathes of the country. But storm clouds were gathering. In 1263 the Norwegian king Haakon IV assembled a fleet of 120 longships to counter Scottish raids on the Norse Hebrides. It was a force comparable in size to the Spanish Armada over three centuries later. But like the Armada, the Norse fleet was eventually defeated by a powerful storm. Driven ashore near present-day Largs, the beleaguered Norsemen were attacked by a Scottish army. The outcome of this vicious encounter would mark the beginning of the end of Norse power in Scotland.

Marine archaeologist Dr Jon Henderson tells the incredible story of the Norsemen in Scotland. Visiting fascinating archaeological sites across Scotland and Norway, he reveals that, although the battle at Largs marked the end of an era for the Norsemen, their presence continued to shape the identity and culture of the Scottish nation to the present day.

The Mandrin Cave in southern France has been attracting the attention of archaeologists for 30 years. The cave was regularly occupied in prehistoric times, and a remarkable record of human habitation going back thousands of years has been preserved by its soils. In 2015, the remains of a Neanderthal were uncovered, and the archaeological evidence points to this individual, named Thorin, living in close proximity to newly arrived Homo sapiens.

This documentary follows an international team of scientists as they discover and investigate precious relics of the Palaeolithic period, resulting in groundbreaking revelations about the human populations of around 50,000 years ago as researchers uncover some of the secrets of the Mandrin Cave.

Surviving the Extreme

Earth's natural wonders are parts of the natural world that nature has carved on such a scale that they beggar belief - vast mountain ranges, impenetrable rainforests and dazzling tropical islands. Places where nature is visible at its most primal, most powerful and most extraordinarily beautiful. Survival for human beings can be an incredible challenge.

The natural wonders are epic in scale: often rugged, possessing an awe-inspiring beauty. But the factors that create these stunning landscapes can also present enormous challenges for the people who call them home. The extremes of nature encountered in many of earth's natural wonders can threaten human survival or make human lives extraordinarily demanding. Yet human beings have devised remarkable ways to survive and even thrive in many of these places. Now these natural wonders are undergoing all sorts of changes, and human survival techniques must also evolve.

In the high Himalaya, yak herder Thokmay Lowa and his small group steer his animals through one of the region's extreme mountain passes. For several months of the year, these herders live isolated lives away from their families, before returning in spring to the summer pastures. Their journey is fraught with hazards, as the terrain they must cross is highly treacherous. With baby yaks being born later than usual this year, some are only a day old when they must tackle the pass.

In the Canadian Arctic, traditional Inuit communities still forage for much of their food. Sixty-three-year-old Minnie Nappaaluk and her granddaughter Eva embark on one of the most hazardous expeditions for food - the mussel harvest. Winters here are so extreme, the surface of the sea freezes, and when the spring tides go out, the sea ice is suspended above the seabed. Just as Inuit women have done for centuries, Minnie and Eva cut a hole through the sea ice and venture below this shifting, dangerous ice layer to collect their bounty.

Some natural wonders are threatened as never before - nowhere more so than the Brazilian Amazon. In the Mato Grosso, as a result of deforestation, the region's microclimate has changed. Now fires rage out of control in the dry season. Not only do these destroy wild habitats - they also threaten the very existence of the indigenous peoples still living traditional lives in the rainforest. Now, one project aims to tackle these blazes by teaching indigenous peoples how to effectively fight the fires. It's a daunting and dangerous task, but the continuance of their traditional way of life depends upon it.

In the blistering Australian outback, cattle ranching requires a lot of space. The only way to efficiently round up the herds on these vast farms is through the use of helicopter cowboys like Chris Weyand. It's a dangerous job - he must fly low and slowly over difficult terrain, and every year, some pilots are killed. But thanks to the efforts of people like Chris, farming on this scale in the outback is now possible.

Deep in the Siberian interior, survival is tough. But climate change is opening up a new niche for the human inhabitants of this region - mammoth tusk collection. The tusks have been locked in the Siberian permafrost for thousands of years, but as the climate changes and the permafrost starts to melt more each summer, it is giving up this unexpected bounty. These tusks are made of ivory and can sell for thousands of dollars. It is a controversial activity - conservationists argue that it encourages the ivory trade. But for now at least this is a legal pursuit.

BB King opens his heart and tells the story of how an oppressed and orphaned young man came to influence and earn the unmitigated praise of the music industry and its following to carry the title of king of the blues.

Filmed on location all over America, as well as in the UK, this picture brings to life the heat- and gin-soaked plantations where it all began, with full cooperation of the BB King museum, owners of vaults and archives so precious and immense that several trips had to be made to revisit the collection and partake of its many gems. Prejudice and segregation has stained the lives of countless black persons and BB 'Riley' King made sure that through his music, he never allowed it to mar his spirit.

This is the essence of the story that makes a beautiful film, both informative and visually captivating.
