SUN 19:00 Discovering the Music of Antiquity (m001x1vb)
When a music score is uncovered deep within the storerooms of the Louvre, musical historians scramble to realise the potential of this piece of papyrus. The text's grammatical features give us a clue to the composer's identity: Carcinus, an author cited by Aristotle in his Rhetoric. His name is engraved on a wall in the Parthenon, and the story of his life offers an insight into the history of Greek musicians, who were revered like gods and welcomed across the Mediterranean to take part in competitions modelled on the Olympic Games.

The discovery of the papyrus, more specifically an ancient version of the tragedy entitled Medea, throws open a new mission by researchers to hear the music sung through modern arrangement. But to listen to the Medea as it was heard by the Greeks 2,400 years ago, it still has to be played on period instruments.

From the Greek cities of Anatolia to the Ptolemies’ Egypt, from the mythical site of Delphi to the discoveries made in Pompeii, relive this voyage along the Mediterranean coast, where archaeological excavations have unearthed instrument remains.

Surprisingly for an object of its size, the Bayeux Tapestry is not mentioned in any contemporary records. So where does it come from? Who made it and why? Archaeologists, historians, biologists, anthropologists and even astrophysicists are unlocking some of the tapestry’s mysteries to understand better the story it tells us about England and France at that time.

TUE 19:00 Planet Earth (b0074sg0)
Mountains

Humans like to think that once they have climbed a mountain, they have somehow conquered it. But they can only ever be visitors to this alien, frozen world. Planet Earth takes you on a tour of its mightiest ranges, beginning with the birth of a mountain at one of the lowest places on earth, and ending at the summit of Everest. Unprecedented access brings you closer than ever before to the most awe-inspiring mountain landscapes on our planet and the secretive, almost mythical creatures that inhabit them - the 'real' mountaineers.

In Ethiopia, Planet Earth ventures into the heart of a volcano to discover one of earth's rarest phenomena - a lava lake that has been erupting for over 100 years. The same forces created Ethiopia's Simien Mountains, home to troops of gelada baboons nearly a thousand strong. In the Andes, a family of five puma struggle to survive the most unstable mountain weather on the planet.

Experience the full force of an avalanche in the Rockies, where grizzlies survive the harsh winters deep inside the dangerous slopes. In summer, the bears climb the peaks in search of moths, which they devour by the thousand.

Descend into the icy core of a glacier in the Alps and emerge in Pakistan, at the snout of the largest glacier on earth. This realm of giant peaks is home to the highest land predator on the planet - the snow leopard. Astounding images of a female snow leopard hunting to feed her cub are a world first.

Enter a mountain cave in China for the first ever glimpse of a wild giant panda mother nursing her week-old baby and fly alongside demoiselle cranes as they attempt to cross the largest range on our planet, the Himalayas. The cranes, like all visitors to the hostile world of the high mountains, dare not linger.

TUE 22:55 Billy Connolly: Made in Scotland (b0bwzhy6)
Series 1

Episode 1

In British comedy there is a line in the sand and that line is Billy Connolly. Before he found fame on an international level, British comedy was an end-of-the-pier kind of affair - but through sheer talent and force of personality, Connolly ploughed a different and deeply personal yet universal approach to comedy and in doing so he changed the face of British comedy forever.

He has been called the Beatles and Jesus of comedy by his peers and an immature 'manure mouth' by the leader of the Scottish Zion Baptist Church. So say what you like about him but you can't deny everyone wants to know him. And that is what Made In Scotland is about - it is Billy as you have never seen him before - intimate, deeply personal and very funny.

Weaved around personal accounts and interviews from famous faces, Billy's life is revealed in all its glory - a shaggy dog story approach to his work - and one that has turned him from Billy Connolly the welder into Billy Connolly - The Big Yin.

Part one of two one-hour specials features Eddie Izzard, Ross Noble, Micky Flanagan, Lord Grade, Tracey Ullman, AL Kennedy, Val McDermid, Sharleen Spiteri and Eddi Reader. The film shows a true reflection of his far influence and still maintaining his unique but personal approach to comedy.

But as new evidence emerges, those close to Pistorius question his maturity and temper. His singular and at times lonely existence emerges, along with details of his romantic relationships. The Cave of Swallows in Mexico is a 400-metre vertical shaft. It's deep enough to engulf the Empire State Building, yet few people even know of its existence. Caves are earth's final frontier and this programme goes where few have been before.

Deer Cave in Borneo is a daytime retreat for five million bats; their droppings support an entire community of creatures. Shine a light on one massive pile of droppings and the whole place shimmers with millions of dung-eating insects.

Caves also harbour some of the most remarkable and bizarre animals on earth - from cave swiftlets who build nests out of just saliva, to the troglodytic animals that never see daylight or ever set foot on the surface. Troglodytes like the Texas cave salamander and Thailand's cave angel have neither eyes nor pigment, and the entire populations of both are found in just a couple of caves.

From Lechuguilla Cave's astonishing six-metre-long crystals, to the extraordinary snottites of Villa Luz, this documentary provides unprecedented access to the hidden world of caves.
