Diarmaid MacCulloch, professor of the history of the church at Oxford University, reveals a very different image of Cromwell. The award-winning novels of Hilary Mantel began the revival of Cromwell's reputation, and now Professor MacCulloch presents Henry VIII's chief minister as a principled and pioneering statesman who was driven by radical evangelism.

Cromwell's extraordinary career blossomed after a childhood marked by poverty and violence. The unschooled son of a brewer, he travelled across Europe as a young man and mysteriously taught himself to speak several languages in addition to accounting and knowledge of the law. When Henry VIII failed to persuade the pope to annul his marriage to Catherine of Aragon, Cromwell engineered an incredible solution. Using his political skills, he persuaded Parliament and the people to accept a mythological rewriting of the history of England in which the English monarch was as an emperor whose power superseded that of the pope.

Professor MacCulloch describes Cromwell as an evangelical reformer, determined to break the hierarchy of the Roman Catholic church and introduce the people of England to a new type of Christianity in which each individual makes direct contact with God.

Presenter Liz McIvor tells the story of the people who operated the canal boats, carrying fuel and goods around the country. Conditions were tough, days were long. Victorian society began to grow suspicious of these 'outsiders' and they gained reputations for criminality, violence and drinking. But was this reputation really deserved? Liz discovers grisly canal crimes, investigates health and welfare onboard working boats, and looks at why canal children were last on the list to be offered safeguards and formal education. The Victorians eventually championed the needs of children who were forced to labour in factories and mines, but the boat children were often ignored. Liz discovers the campaigners who set out to tackle this injustice, including George Smith of Coalville, Leicestershire, and Sister Mary Ward of Stoke Bruerne.

Lucy observes as Katherine narrowly escapes being arrested for treason.

Henry dies and his son Edward VI takes the throne. Katherine remarries and gets pregnant but tragically dies a week after the baby is born.

5 October 1994: Switzerland is in shock after the discovery of 48 corpses in farm buildings in the remote village of Cheiry and two burned chalets in the town of Salvan. What do the victims have in common? They are all part of a sect, the Order of the Solar Temple. At first, it seems they have taken part in a death ritual, with police and forensic investigators arriving at the horrific scene shocked to find children amongst the dead. Two cult gurus are quickly identified as the charismatic Dr Luc Jouret and swindler Jo Di Mambroand, international arrest warrants are issued, but are these cult leaders amongst the victims?

Soon, the case takes on an international dimension. Nearly 4,000 miles from Switzerland, in the village of Morin-Heights, Canada, the charred remains of two more cult members are found. The homemade fuses that started the fires are identical to those used at the Swiss locations. As the story grows increasingly macabre, the Quebec police make another, terrible discovery - the stabbed corpses of two more followers, and their three-month-old baby son. Journalists and investigators try to uncover the secrets behind these massacres, and the investigation grows in scope. What happened? Murder, manslaughter or mass suicide? No leads are ruled out.

mysterious world of beliefs emerges; mystical ceremonies where the followers would spend time with the Masters of Sirius, higher beings that cult leaders claim guide their actions on earth. These occult theories were developed by the two gurus Jo Di Mambro and Dr Luc Jouret, men with very different personas and backgrounds, united in their creation of the cult. Over 15 years, they recruit more than 600 followers, who give money, labour and obedience. Behind the mystic and compelling illusions and veneer of loving community, the reporters discover a ruthless and illegal financial organisation. It seems that while some of the victims of Cheiry, Salvan and Morin-Heights committed suicide to transit to Sirius, others may have been murdered because they had become a threat to the Order as a whole.

Many roved the countryside looking for work and a better deal. They gained a reputation as troublesome outsiders, fond of drinking and living a life of ungodly debauchery. But who were they? Unreliable heathens and outcasts or unsung heroes who used might and muscle to build canals and railways?

We focus on the Manchester Ship Canal - the swansong for the navvies, hailed as the greatest engineering feat of the Victorian age. The navvies worked at a time of rising trade unionism. But could they organise and campaign for a better deal?

A coastal walk is the setting for Poet Laureate Simon Armitage's ramble along Yorkshire’s enchanting and historic frontier with the North Sea.

Gordon Welchman was one of the original elite codebreakers crucial to the allies defeating the Nazis in World War II. He is the forgotten genius of Bletchley Park.

Filmed extensively at Bletchley Park, the centre for codebreaking operations during World War II, this documentary features the abandoned buildings where thousands of people worked tirelessly trying to crack the codes; Hut 6, where Welchman pioneered his groundbreaking work; and the machines that Welchman helped design.

Post-war, Welchman moved to the United States to be at the nerve centre of the computer revolution. He was employed by the Mitre Corporation, a US defence contractor, and engaged in top secret work. Recently released top secret documents reveal that the case of Gordon Welchman reached the desk of the British prime minister, Margaret Thatcher, which then led to questions being asked in the House of Commons after Welchman's death.

Welchman's legacy continues to this day as Professor John Naughton and former CIA analyst Cynthia Storer reveal how Welchman's pioneering work in the field of traffic analysis led directly to the modern secret surveillance state, and particularly the use of metadata - as revealed by whistleblower Edward Snowden.

Liz visits the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct in Wales and travels to Birmingham where canals have become catalysts for property development and urban regeneration. Canals offer so many benefits today. Perhaps, Liz suggests, it is time to construct a few more?
