A Shropshire Lad

"Into my heart an air that kills
From yon far country blows:
What are those blue remembered hills,
What spires, what farms are those?
That is the land of lost content,
I see it shining plain,
The happy highways where I went
And cannot come again."

So wrote the poet AE Housman lamenting the loss of his brother in the Boer war in his epic poem A Shropshire Lad.

It harks back to a simple idyllic rural way of life that is forever changed at the end of the 19th century as hundreds of country boys go off to fight and never return. George Butterworth adapted his words to music in 1913 just before the outbreak of the Great War.

We hear from those whose lives continue to be touched by the loss of so many young men between 1914 and 1918. Broadcaster Sybil Ruscoe recalls visiting her Great Uncle's grave in a military cemetery in France with Butterworth's Rhapsody as the soundtrack to her journey.

A concert at Bromsgrove School in Worcestershire where Housman was a pupil remembers the former schoolboys killed in action, and singer Steve Knightley discusses and performs his adaptation of The Lads In Their Hundreds.

The Bishop of Woolwich connects his love of the countryside and Butterworth's music with his father's battered copy of Housman's poems which comforted him while held captive in Singapore during the Second World War.

SAT 07:30 How to Avoid a Climate Disaster by Bill Gates (Omnibus) (m0024vjb)
Bill Gates sets out his far-reaching plan for how the world can get to net-zero greenhouse emissions by 2050 and avoid a climate catastrophe.

Bill is a technologist, entrepreneur and philanthropist, and he brings together these three strands to propose an urgent, comprehensive and accessible plan to get the planet to net-zero emissions, before the worst effects of climate change are upon us.

He sets out the climate science simply and explores initiatives like wind power, which are already contributing to a reduction in greenhouse emissions, but he goes on to argue that these existing methods aren't sufficient.

Gates then turns to innovations in technology to get us all the way to zero, from new processes for making steel and cement, to developing the science fundamental to creating plant and cell-based meats, and growing wheat and rice varieties capable of enduring a warmer planet.

Lastly, he sets out a roadmap for governments and policymakers to adopt, to ensure that in every continent and country our fragile planet remains inhabitable. His ideas are authoritative, expansive and inspiring.

Howard Jacobson

Writer Howard Jacobson is castaway by Kirsty Young.

After many years of swiping at literary prizes, in October 2010 Howard walked off with the biggest one going, the Man Booker.

His book, The Finkler Question, was a study of what it meant to be Jewish in England. It's a subject that has been very near to Howard Jacobson's heart.

He says: "My sense of myself has always meant being on the outside. On the outside as a Jew, looking into gentile England, but also on the outside of Jewishness too. I have always felt myself to be on the outside of everything."

SUN 06:45 David Attenborough's Life Stories (b00yjtg4)
Series 2

Canopy

If you walk into a rainforest you are immediately met by quite literally a forest of trees.

All the tree trunks look like cathedral pillars, smooth and wet from the rain.

Not a single branch emerges from the trunk for tens of metres - and when they do you see a breath-taking interlocking jungle of branches and leaves, ferns and flowers and all number of creatures great and small.

The canopy is a bonanza of tropical forest life, in the bright light and gentle breeze - a far cry from the dark and humid underworld of the forest floor.

Not surprising then that Sir David Attenborough knew this would be a perfect place to film wildlife.

Producer: Julian Hector

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in February 2011.

SUN 07:00 Poetry Extra (m0024wwx)
Tongue and Talk: The Dialect Poets - Isle of Man

Poet Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's poetry archive and selects Tongue and Talk: The Dialect Poets - Isle of Man

Actor and writer Catherine Harvey returns to her family roots in the Isle of Man. She explores the voices of Manx dialect and language speakers, whose words are influenced by the Celts and Norsemen.

Catherine concentrates her search in two areas - the north of the island where her family are from and the west, an area associated with the speaking of Manx Gaelic.

She looks at the work of TE Brown, who is still thought of as the island’s national poet, and the writers who were part of the Manx Cultural Revival.

In St Johns, she meets Dr Breesha Maddrell, Director of Culture Vannin, to discuss the influence of Manx Gaelic on the dialect of the island, before travelling north to talk to cultural activist, Bob Carswell, and members of The Michael Players – the only organisation in the world regularly performing plays in Manx dialect.

Meanwhile, Catherine asks the current Manx Bard, Annie Kissack, if the dialect and language spoken on the island today has changed – and whether one of them has ultimately triumphed.

1. A Parisian Beginning

Wendy Moore's account of the trailblazing women who set up three military hospitals during the First World War is a tribute to their brilliant and courageous work.

Louisa Garrett Anderson and Flora Murray were the two pioneering doctors who put their campaigning for Votes for Women to one side, so that they could turn their attention to the casualties of war.

They made their mark by setting up and running a military hospital on Endell Street in the heart of London, where over the course of the war they treated 26,000 wounded soldiers.

Anderson and Murray demonstrated, along with their staff of women surgeons, nurses and orderlies, that they were supremely capable in so many fields of medicine, but when the war ended, their achievements were once again side-lined, and the story of Endell Street forgotten.

MON 09:30 Good Pop Bad Pop by Jarvis Cocker (m001741w)
1. Manifesto

Jarvis Cocker delves into the contents of his loft - considering each item before deciding whether to keep or cob (throw away)

In doing so, he explores the origins of his creativity and what exactly makes good pop work and why bad pop fails.

This inventory takes the form of a coming of age memoir revisiting Sheffield in the1980s against the backdrop of the miners strikes and rising unemployment.

With the aid of a collection of 1980s pop objects and a gallery of interesting shirts, Jarvis charts the early days of the band Pulp, from the humiliation of a concert in the school hall at lunchtime to an invitation to record a session for John Peel.

This period of his life, living in a disused factory while trying to get the band off the ground, comes to a sudden end after a disastrous stunt to impress a girl changes his life - and his attitude to music making.

Jarvis Cocker grew up in Sheffield in the 1960s and 70s, founding the band Pulp with his friends while he still was at City School despite not being able to play an instrument.

The band went on to perform regularly in local venues in the 1980s until eventually they found fame in the 1990s with the success of the single Common People, which made their name, and the albums His 'n' Hers (1994) and Different Class (1995).

Written and read by Jarvis Cocker.

Abridged in five parts by Isobel Creed and Jill Waters.

Producer: Jill Waters

Gyles Brandreth discovers what it takes to become a national treasure.

How do you achieve the cultural status of figures like June Whitfield, Sir Alan Bennett and Sir David Attenborough.

Twiggy, Dame Judi Dench and Tony Benn are national treasures. But many other public figures are not.

Gyles sets out to discover the process by which a few personalities - but only a few - get to become one of our celebrity jewels. He finds out whether 'national treasure' status comes down to longevity, eccentricity or several ungainly appearances on Strictly Come Dancing.

He hears from national treasures including Sir Terry Wogan and Dame Edna Everage - who naturally considers herself to be an international treasure - and finds out what our national treasures reveal about British identity and our changing attitudes to heroism, and to our history.

And, using his rigorously devised National Treasure Matrix, Gyles assesses his own chances with an exacting focus group comprising journalist Danny Finkelstein plus writers and broadcasters Natalie Haynes and Bidisha.

Will Gyles's weakness for teddy bears and gaudy jumpers be enough?

MON 22:30 Ashley Blaker: 6.5 Children (m000xmz6)
Series 1

1. Too Many Kids

Stand-up comedian Ashley Blaker highlights his unusual home life - starting with the downside to having a large family

Their morning routine is so challenging it would give Michael McIntyre a heart attack and an almost never ending need to replace phone chargers.

It's a mix of stand-up and observational documentary, all recorded in the Blakers’ unusual home with the voices of his real family, and tackling parenting, adoption and raising children with special needs.

The series brings a whole new perspective to the subject of parenting. That is because as parents of six children, Ashley and his wife Gemma are trying to raise a family in a world that is only really set up for having two.

What's more, the Blakers’ children are not just any kids. Three have special needs – two autistic boys and an adopted girl with Down Syndrome – and Ashley Blaker: 6.5 Children sensitively finds the funny in both raising children with disabilities and adoption.

Written and performed by Ashley Blaker - a comedian who's performed on five continents including tours of the UK, USA, Canada, South Africa, Israel and Australia. The New York Times called his 2018 Off-Broadway run ‘a slickly funny stand-up show’ and, in 2020, he returned with Goy Friendly at the prestigious SoHo Playhouse.

Ashley is joined by:

Shelley Blond
Kieran Hodgson
Rosie Holt
Judith Jacob

Also appearing as themselves are Ashley’s own children:

Ophie (15)
Simi (13)
Soroh (12)
Sruly (11)
Bina (7)

This is not a charity. It isn't even an organisation. It's a project Lemn undertook because he understands how it feels - at 18 he was released from a children's home and given an empty flat in Wigan, with no-one in the world who had known him for longer than a year.

Lemn Sissay’s Social Enterprise is a four-part series for BBC Radio 4, considering what these dinners have taught him about charity, social enterprise, and people, through stand-up, interview and poetry.

This week he explores the idea of presents - with the help of Nick Cole, the UK project director for Operation Christmas Child, and comedian Jason Cook.

TUE 08:30 Endell Street by Wendy Moore (m000jmv5)
2. An Invitation from the War Office

It's 1914 and the trailblazing doctors Flora Murray and Louisa Garrett Anderson, get to work on the front line in war ravaged France.

Later, the success of the first military hospital they set up in Paris is to repeated close to France's border with Belgium, and in London, the War Office prepares to make an extraordinary invitation.

Endell Street is a tribute to Louisa Garrett Anderson and Flora Murray and their brilliant and courageous work. Putting aside their campaign for the suffragette movement, they made their mark by setting up and running two military hospitals in France and one in the heart of London, on Endell Street. Over the four years that Endell Street was in operation, Murray and Anderson treated thousands of wounded soldiers, and along with their staff of women surgeons, nurses and orderlies, they demonstrated their influence in different medical disciplines. Yet, when the war ended, their achievements were sidelined, and the part they played was forgotten.

TUE 09:30 Good Pop Bad Pop by Jarvis Cocker (m001748v)
2. Meningitis

Jarvis Cocker delves into the contents of his loft and considers each item before deciding whether to keep or cob (throw away) and, in doing so, explores the origins of his creativity and what exactly makes good pop work and why bad pop fails.

This inventory takes the form of a coming of age memoir revisiting Sheffield in the 1980s against the backdrop of the miners strikes and rising unemployment.

Abridged by Isobel Creed and Jill Waters.

Producer: Jill Waters

TUE 10:30 Women of the New Wave (b00r8hhz)
Singer Pauline Black meets some of the women who were in the vanguard of punk and new wave music, and asks what their legacy is for today's female artists.

Punk offered women the chance to get on stage and be themselves, free from the constraints of a previously male dominated music industry.

Artists such as Siouxsie Sioux, Poly Styrene and Gaye Advert started their own bands and expressed themselves in ways that female musicians hadn't been allowed to previously. They refused to be judged on their looks and asserted the right to sing about subjects that interested them rather than about broken hearts and lost loves.

As punk evolved into a wider musical spectrum that encompassed New Wave and Two Tone, bands such as The Selecter emerged through which singers such as Pauline Black tackled issues of racism and sexism in their lyrics.

Thirty years on, she asks some of those groundbreaking women what they think they've achieved for women of their and subsequent generations.

Nikesh Shukla

Sarah Kendall talks to three different storytellers about what ‘story’ means to them.

How have they developed their own style of storytelling in their respective mediums?

In this episode, Sarah talks to author Nikesh Shukla about the importance of truth in storytelling.

Sarah started out as a stand-up comic in late 1990s Australia. After performing for 15 years around the world, she transitioned into storytelling.

Sarah wanted to create something on stage that felt like the sort of films she loved to watch, so she wrote an hour-long show with a single personal story. She reimagined her teenage years as though they had been directed by John Hughes, giving her memories a full, cinematic makeover.

This connected Sarah to her audience in a more meaningful way compared to her original joke-based routines.

He was involved in the early days of the US space programme, was a strong advocate for the Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence, and his passion for the grandeur of the universe we live in and our place in it inspired a generation of young scientists.

4. Records

Abridged by Isobel Creed and Jill Waters.

Producer: Jill Waters

THU 10:30 Herman Melville's Sea Change (b06zqpcc)
Melville's Moby-Dick is one of the weirdest great novels. Most people know that. What not many people know is how Melville came to write the book and how he nearly didn't and how he almost became a Liverpudlian in the process. Paul Farley, poet and Liverpudlian, salutes an almost-ran and looks out after Melville across the Atlantic.

Melville had one of the strangest and saddest lives. He died broke. Very few copies of Moby-Dick had been sold in his lifetime. Earlier he had a bizarre interlude in his life when he thought of settling in Liverpool and being thereby 'annihilated' as he called it. Taking this as his starting point Paul tracks Melville, his work and inspiration and his life, and looks at the novel and its author from the western-facing seaports of Britain. How did the white whale and all that it has come to mean and suggest come from Melville's crossing of the Atlantic? What does it mean to undergo a sea change? Are we all eligible?

With Chris Routledge, Philip Hoare, Philip Davis and Horatio Clare.

Producer: Tim Dee

Even so, this is the first time Michael has been invited to such a prestigious industry event and wife Roberta insists he attends - as long as she can come too.

Roberta is more excited about the awards ceremony than Michael, as she spies a chance to network and create new opportunities for his burgeoning comedy career.

And the stress of Michael’s day job as a copywriter at a kitchen worktop company intensifies after an ominous corridor encounter with a new recruit.

As Michael’s anxiety goes full throttle, even a call from 1920s cabaret star and war heroine Josephine Baker fails to calm his nerves and he gives the most explosive presentation speech in the history of the Webber’s Comedy Awards. Or does he?

5. The Last Days

In Wendy Moore's book about the military hospital set up during the First World War, the final days of the hostilities approach., but it is "darkest before dawn".

This is the story of the trailblazing women who set up three military hospitals during WWI and is a tribute to their brilliant and courageous work.

Louisa Garrett Anderson and Flora Murray were the two doctors who put their campaigning for women's suffrage to one side, so that they could turn their attention to the war wounded. They made their mark by setting up and running a hospital on Endell Street in the heart of London, where over the course of the war they treated 26,000 wounded soldiers. However, when the war ended, Murray and Anderson's achievements were once again side-lined, and the story of Endell Street was forgotten.

FRI 22:00 Parish Matters (m0024vpf)
Series 1

1. "Don't come crying to me when the robots take over!"

A new sitcom-sketch hybrid made in Belfast and starring voices from all over Ireland. Each week we join the eccentric inhabitants of the parish in their weekly council meeting to air their problems and grievances.

The parish is in the grip of a technological revolution and the council meets to try to understand what exactly it all means and where they can noisily wade in. So what will they do about the gargantuan data centre in the good field? Why do the drone deliveries keep blowing up? How did two council members nearly die? What’s the update on the upcoming Manifestival? And can the best (and only) cop in town solve the case of the man going round stealing everyone’s jobs?

Parish Matters is a window into an everlasting argument and an energetic and original comedy show written by Michael McCullagh and Phil Taggart and starring the writers alongside Michael Fry, Ciara Knight, Hannah Mamalis, Mary Flanigan, Michael Stranney and Peter McGann.

Producer: Keith Martin
Executive Producer: Sam Michell
