SAT 00:30 Turntable Tales (b07378ct)
2. Turntablists and Turntable Survival

DJ and broadcaster Colleen Murphy concludes the story of the record turntable by bringing it up to the present.

From the 1940s there was a steady improvement in the quality of turntables and their attendant amps and speakers but the biggest step was the introduction of small, self-contained units that allowed teenagers to find and refine their musical tastes in the relative seclusion of their bedrooms.

Colleen also tracks the recent rise in turntable sales and visits a surviving and now thriving niche producer, Nottingham Analogue, to see how they go about creating the perfect deck.

But there's been another revolution in the turntable story which began on a very particular day in 1975 when DJ Grand Wizzard Theodore, with the help of his mother, developed the 'scratch'. Colleen chats to Grand Wizzard about his scratching discovery and the Turntablism which developed from it.

It was the DJ's who, back in the nineties helped sustain the production of vinyl. Now it's the audiophiles who lead the charge. Turntable sales have turned a corner and the Turntable Tale is very far from over.

In searching for the magic of what the turntable is, can be and has been, Colleen hears again from the Antiques Roadshow's Paul Atterbury about a memorable moment during his time on the show involving an old, wind-up gramophone.

Alice Cooper

American rock musician Alice Cooper is castaway by Kirsty Young.

As a teenager he says it was British music that he tuned in to - listening to The Beatles, The Yardbirds and The Who.

He realised that while rock music had many heroes, there were few villains - that was the territory he marked out for himself. He developed his trademark look - blackened eyes, straggly hair and glamorous clothes - and set about designing live shows that were gleefully gory and macabre.

While critics have described him as 'the world's most beloved heavy metal entertainer', it took him a while to untangle himself from his creation.

"For a long time I honestly didn't know where I began and Alice ended. My friends at the time were Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and I was trying to keep up with them. And I realised when they all died that you didn't have to be your character off stage."

SUN 07:00 Poetry Extra (m0022szx)
Poetry Workshop - Close by Carol Ann Duffy

Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's poetry archive and selects Poetry Workshop - Close by Carol Ann Duffy.

And Daljit chooses his Poetry Extra Book of the Month: Belief Systems by Tamar Yoselof.

Ruth Padel works with a group of poets who meet at Stalybridge Station buffet bar in Manchester. Testing their poems as they go, in a spirit of supportive criticism; tough love for poems.

Poetry Workshops are gathering all over the country. In the back rooms of pubs like this one, and in libraries and in front rooms, poets meet to sharpen their verse.
Ruth and the group work on three very different poems on the theme of 'journeys' - both symbolic and actual.

One poem takes us to Zante via Watford Gap, one considers perspective and scale from on high, whilst another has a much darker tone. The group will pay particular attention this week to metaphor.

The group consider the use of metaphor in their poems that are touching, funny and perceptive. Ruthless support is applied as they chuck out each other's words and test and prune as they go.

They discuss the techniques, inspiration, wordplay and imagination that make poetry so enjoyable and rewarding. As well as working on their own poems, they also consider a poem by Carol Ann Duffy called Close.

Dancer and choreographer Dane Hurst bought a former Rambert Company vinyl dance floor to take back home to South Africa, for under-privileged children to dance on.

Dance is like a magic carpet - it transported young Dane out of the volatility and violence and poverty of his childhood in segregated Port Elizabeth to life as a Rambert student and dancer in London.

He believes it can transport other young people. But buying the floor was the start of a larger dream that Dane calls the Moving Assembly Project (MAP).

In the next few years, Dane plans to construct a prototype dance space out of shipping containers and install the floor in it - to give dance training to thousands of underprivileged children, transporting them for a moment out of their frustrations and grief.

Follow Dane as he starts on his dream, visiting MAP’s pilot project - workshops with vulnerable children at the Ubuntu Centre in the old township of Zwide in the northern areas of Port Elizabeth.

Hear how modern dance touches local teenagers, as Dane visits his childhood dance school in another part of the city’s northern areas where he finds children in severe need.

6. The Marathon

Episode Six - The Marathon
Clive has a chance encounter with an old friend which may prove the key to success in his London Marathon bid. Harriett eyes a new job opportunity and Gladys must work hard to avoid a promotion.

Garrett Millerick’s Do Gooders is a new ensemble sitcom that takes us behind the charity curtain and mines the numerous frustrations that come with trying to ‘do good’ on an industrial scale. With Frank Skinner, Fay Ripley, Lisa McGrillis, Ahir Shah and Ania Magliano.

The series follows the exploits of the fundraising events team at a fictional mid-level charity, The Alzheimers Alliance. Fundraising for this kind of mid-table organisation comes with its own unique set of challenges, be it setting up eye catching events, courting celebrity endorsement or juggling the inter charity politics.

And whilst certainly not languishing on the lowest rungs of the charity league table, Alzheimers hasn’t got the dazzling sheen or the pulling power of a cancer charity, nor does it capture the public’s sympathies in the way lifeboats or guide dogs do.

If Cancer Research is Coca-Cola, Alzheimers Alliance is Lilt. A cracking drink, but they’ve got to work hard to remind people they exist or face total extinction.

Michael Grade

TV executive, former sports writer and showbiz agent - Michael Grade explores his life through the BBC Archive.

From his earliest job as a sports writer on the Daily Mirror, to his varied career as Controller BBC1, Chief Executive of Channel 4 and now in charge of ITV, Michael Grade's life has been a very public one.

In conversation with John Wilson, Michael reflects on the soundtrack to his life drawn through over 30 years of the BBC sound archives.

Coming from a showbusiness family, with an agent for a father and uncles Lew Grade and Bernard Delfont in theatre and TV, Michael Grade has seen at first-hand how the language of variety and vaudeville can work.

In his 6-year career at the Daily Mirror, as "Mike Grade" he had a sports column and learned how to work with the press.

His move into TV came in the 1970s and from the 1980s he was a major player in BBC TV, becoming Controller of BBC1.

Here he hears the sound archive of his life and ponders what he's learned and how he's developed, from his earliest writings to his return to the BBC in 2004 and his later defection to ITV.

WED 22:00 Paul Sinha's Perfect Pub Quiz (m0016hfl)
Series 1

Round one: Literature

The problem with quizzes is that the same questions keep coming up, like “What’s the name of the only member of ZZ Top without a beard?”*. So the more quizzes you do, the more predictable they get. Luckily, here comes quizzer, comedian and Rose d’Or winner Paul Sinha with his series, Paul Sinha’s Perfect Pub Quiz. In each episode he invites the audience to tell him their favourite quiz questions, before offering up not just different and surprising questions, but also the fascinating stories behind the answers.

This week's show is full of questions for the Literature Round of the quiz. Paul asks about the first work of sci-fi to depict a flight to the moon, an author's curiously-labelled filing cabinet and the best-selling British writer still alive at the time of recording. The audience, meanwhile, contribute questions about unusual verbs, literary hotels, and the works of Eric Morecambe.

It’s facts, jokes, stories and puns – just the way you like them.

After more than 10 years of living in London, comedian Jayde Adams is returning to her hometown of Bristol.

Why?

It’s cheaper.

But also because of reasons that go deeper than that, and which she told Radio 4 would take another half-hour episode to explain.

Jayde asks what ‘feeling at home’ really means; why we leave home; and why some of us, at least, feel the draw to go back.

Not that Jayde’s story isn’t interesting enough on its own - girl lives in same house for 18 years, moves to London, moves back again.

Jayde also spoke to Dawn French, Victoria Scone, Keala Settle and Sophie Willan about their own experiences of home; where they’ve made home; and how it’s made them.

THU 08:00 Paul Sinha's Citizenship Test (b038n3dh)
3. British Culture

Paul Sinha is proudly British. He also loves a quiz.

So you would have thought that the UK Citizenship Test, which newcomers to this country must pass to become citizens, would have been right up his street.

But the questions in the 2012 and 2013 Home Office guides seem either bizarrely easy - "Where is Welsh most widely spoken?" - or infuriatingly vague - "What happened in the First World War?"

So Paul has created his own test, to better reflect the things that aspiring migrants should understand before they can call themselves British.

In this episode, he looks at British culture - newspapers, TV, art and film.

He tests the studio audience on their knowledge, with those that answer incorrectly being deported; he also offers up £10 of his own money to anyone in the audience who can correctly identify an artist that the Home Office think all new immigrants should be aware of.

Written and performed by Paul Sinha.

Producer: Ed Morrish.

THU 10:30 David Hockney - Back in LA (b07h6hft)
In June 2013, art critic Martin Gayford received a message from David Hockney.

It said that he was leaving Yorkshire to return to Los Angeles and he might be staying there for some time.

Hockney’s relocation came after a disastrous few months in the artist's personal life.

In autumn 2012, he suffered a minor stroke and temporarily almost lost his speech. A tree that he often painted was felled in an act of vandalism that sent him into depression. In March, one of his assistants, Dominic Elliott died as a result of misadventure when he drank acid after taking a range of drugs. Hockney almost gave up painting. But LA gave him inspiration.

He painted his assistant John-Pierre with his head in his hands. This image of deep despondency, which Hockney calls a self-portrait, was the catalyst for a new ambitious phase of work.

He began painting figures sat on the same chair against the same plain backdrop. The sitters’ variety of figures, poses and clothes reinvigorated Hockney, as he recruited more and more characters for his “Human Comedy.”

The results would become a single series of portraits to be displayed at Hockney’s second show at the Royal Academy in four years, ’82 Portraits and One Still Life,’ opening in July.

As the series began to take shape, in December 2013, Martin flew to California to sit.

He’ll re-visit the process of being painted by Britain’s most famous artist and he’ll interview Hockney about his life in Los Angeles, portraiture and this astonishing new chapter in his career.

Producer: Paul Smith

A Just Radio production for BBC Radio 4, first broadcast in June 2016.

3. The Village I Abandoned

Babs persuades absentee landlord Brighty that he has to visit his estate village for the first time ever to make it up to the estate villagers, but their visit swiftly descends into a mystery. With Brighty away, Churlington defies specific instructions NOT to clean the East Wing.

Lord Christian Brighty is the talk of the Regency 'Ton' - a celebrated libertine, a heartthrob and a hero to many. But close-up, he is a spoilt, impetuous, life-ruining bastard… Or at least he was. Because his carefree life of infinite privilege has been upended by an encounter with his new chambermaid - the uneducated but forthright Babigail - who became the first person to tell him the unvarnished truth about his selfish behaviour. Overnight, his lifelong trust that everyone loved him had been replaced with a gnawing fear that Babs was right.

So now, with his narcissism collapsing and a need to prove to Babs he is actually a good person, Lord Brighty is determined to fix all his past wrongs. And by extension all the ills of Regency society. Accompanying him in his quest are Babs (elevated beyond her station to a chambermaid-cum-adviser role), and his butler, Mr Churlington. Although Churley would prefer everything to stay exactly as it used to be (as would all Brighty’s friends, family and the entirety of high society).
