SAT 00:30 The Loss of Lostness (b06gtfql)
“Let's Get Lost..." croons Chet Baker, harmonising with his own trumpet.

It's a 1950s recording made at the high-water mark of jazz - that improvised and meandering art form.

Taking his instruction from Baker, Stephen Smith sets out.

However, modern technology can almost guarantee that we need never be lost again - in cities, encyclopaedias or record shops. Many of today's teenagers have never been lost, either literally or metaphorically. We've been given Wi-Fi-enabled omnipotence. But, Stephen asks:

"Where's the fun in that?"

So, Stephen turns off his GPS and explores the joys of mooching about, taking a wrong turning - only to stumble upon some unexpected delight.

He has some rollicking encounters along the way.

Stephen meets a man in Hampton Court Maze who claims he was clean-shaven when he went in.

He goes on a Sunday drive - remember them? - with design guru Stephen Bayley - where they reminisce about "the Proustian pleasure of a packet of cheese and onion...on an absolutely futile drive".

Via Virginia's Woolf's great essay on getting lost, "Street Haunting", he goes to see Graham Gouldman of 10cc.

The idea of getting lost strikes a chord with Gouldman. There's lots of messing around on guitars. Gouldman talks about getting lost in the record shops of his youth, relives the writing of their greatest hit "I'm Not in Love", and in the end pens a new song to lostness. Stephen asks Graham what he might do with it.

A week later, a fully recorded version arrives in Stephen's inbox - and he hits play....

Producer: Adele Armstrong

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in October 2015.

Olympic Spirit

Nick Webborn

Professor Nick Webborn is castaway by Lauren Laverne.

Nick has chaired the British Paralympic Association since 2017.

He is a world-leading expert on Paralympic sports medicine and the most widely-published author on the subject. He has attended 11 Paralympic and one Olympic Games.

He was born in Swansea in 1956, trained as a doctor in London and joined the RAF as a junior medical officer. In 1981 he was playing in an RAF rugby match when a mistimed opposition tackle left him with a severe spinal injury.

After many months of treatment and rehabilitation, which he now describes as 'long and tortuous,' he wanted to return to work in medicine, but found that there was a reluctance to employ a doctor with a disability.

He worked as a GP and also pursued an interest in sports medicine, leading to research in this area and an academic role. When he saw the medical support available for Olympic athletes, he felt strongly that para-athletes deserved the same level of specialist help - especially as many also had to deal with underlying problems that their Olympic peers did not face.

His pioneering research has made Paralympic sport safer for athletes, and has driven the development of sports medicine in areas such as rehabilitation. He also represented Great Britain in wheelchair tennis in 2005.

Nick is Professor of Sport and Exercise Medicine at the University of Brighton.

4. The Influencer

Episode Four - The Influencer
Clive hasn’t been feeling himself of late and a potential diagnosis from Lauren causes him to spiral. Harriett and Gladys battle a looming public relations disaster and Achi solves his impending homelessness with a surprise suggestion from Ken.

Garrett Millerick’s Do Gooders is a new ensemble sitcom that takes us behind the charity curtain and mines the numerous frustrations that come with trying to ‘do good’ on an industrial scale. With Frank Skinner, Fay Ripley, Lisa McGrillis, Ahir Shah and Ania Magliano.

The series follows the exploits of the fundraising events team at a fictional mid-level charity, The Alzheimers Alliance. Fundraising for this kind of mid-table organisation comes with its own unique set of challenges, be it setting up eye catching events, courting celebrity endorsement or juggling the inter charity politics.

And whilst certainly not languishing on the lowest rungs of the charity league table, Alzheimers hasn’t got the dazzling sheen or the pulling power of a cancer charity, nor does it capture the public’s sympathies in the way lifeboats or guide dogs do.

If Cancer Research is Coca-Cola, Alzheimers Alliance is Lilt. A cracking drink, but they’ve got to work hard to remind people they exist or face total extinction.

1915: Rose Sayer’s work as a missionary comes to an abrupt end when the village she and her brother, Reverend Samuel Sayer, live in is invaded by the German army.

Samuel dies of fever and Rose blames the ungodly Germans for having ground him down and frightened off the entire village.

Patriotically, but naively, Rose conceives of blowing up a German warship to help the war effort. Cowardly Cockney Charlie Allnut reluctantly agrees to use his rickety steam-powered boat, The African Queen for her cause.

If they manage to survive enemy attacks, rapids, malaria and mechanical mishaps - will they be able to survive each other?

Tony Hancock had taken an unscheduled trip to Italy, leaving Hancock Half Hour’s producer, Dennis Main Wilson, to ask Harry Secombe to step in to star in the first three episodes of the second series of Hancock’s Half Hour.

The fourth episode saw Tony return, and begrudgingly make ‘A Visit To Swansea’, to thank Harry Secombe for stepping in.

Disorienting: Asians on Screen

Comedian Phil Wang takes a personal look at the representation of East and South East Asians in the West - on stage, screen and beyond.

He shines a light on many ingrained racist stereotypes, reflects on yellowface and whitewashing - all at a unique moment. With a backdrop of an alarming rise in violence and threat in the shadow of COVID-19, East and South East Asian artists, writers and others in the media are mobilising like never before to fix the longstanding issues and address a persistent form of racism that gets largely overlooked.

Talking with academics Diana Yeh, Xun Zhou and Lu Gram, actors and writers Daniel York Loh and Chloe Mi Lin Ewart, master illusionist Jim Steinmeyer and musician Emma-Lee Moss (also known as Emmy the Great), Phil encounters magic crystal lanterns, starships and ouija boards. He takes a yellowface ride from Fu Manchu and Suzy Wong, to James Mason with a dodgy moustache and an even dodgier accent, through to 21st century Hollywood.

Phil also discovers the dark power of stereotypes, from the screen to the playground to the street and in the bedroom.

THU 08:00 Paul Sinha's Citizenship Test (b037vlck)
1. History Syllabus

Paul Sinha is proudly British. He also loves a quiz. So you would have thought that the UK Citizenship Test, which newcomers to this country must pass to become citizens, would have been right up his street.

But the questions in the 2012 and 2013 Home Office guides seem either bizarrely easy - "Where is Welsh most widely spoken?" - or infuriatingly vague - "What happened in the First World War?"

So Paul has created his own test, to better reflect the things that aspiring migrants should understand before they can call themselves British.

He starts with the history syllabus, looking at what we know about the most important legal document in our history; the Patron Saints of the Home Nations; provides a guide to our twenty most important cities; and points out a historical error in the official guide.

He also tests the studio audience on their knowledge, with those that answer incorrectly being deported.

The series intertwines the sort of comedy Paul has become known for on The Now Show, The News Quiz, and Fighting Talk, as well as his own BBC Radio 4 shows The Sinha Test and The Sinha Games, and the command of facts and figures he demonstrates on ITV's quiz show The Chase.

Written and performed by Paul Sinha.

THU 10:00 Great Lives (m000df5g)
Andi Oliver on Nobel Prize-winning author Toni Morrison

Chef and broadcaster Andi Oliver chooses the Nobel Prize-winning author of 'Beloved'.

When Andi Oliver first read Toni Morrison's 'The Bluest Eye' she felt as though someone climbed inside her head. Morrison's books saved her life - both emotionally and cerebrally.

The author, editor and college professor Toni Morrison chronicled the lives of African-Americans in novels such as 'Beloved', 'Sula' and 'Song of Solomon'. She once said that what drove her to write was "the silence of so many stories untold and unexamined". Born in Ohio, she was granddaughter to a slave, and her work often drew on the legacies of slavery, how it's carried down the generations.

Awarded both the Pulitzer and the Nobel Prize for Literature, her work was internationally acclaimed.

Joining Matthew Parris and Andi Oliver is Morrison's close friend Fran Lebowitz, and Howard University professor Dana Williams.

Producer: Eliza Lomas

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in January 2020.

THU 10:30 Songs for Madame Vasnier (b0194mvs)
Relish the lyrical riches of Théodore de Banville, Alfred de Musset, Paul Bourget, Théophile Gautier and Paul Verlaine - the poets French composer Claude Debussy chose to express his love for an older, married woman, Marie Blanche Vasnier.

Hearing her sing moved Debussy, then an impressionable young student, to create a treasury of songs specially with her voice in mind.
Among the many songs he wrote for Madame Vasnier, is the unpublished "La fille aux cheveux de lin". It was the starting point of Debussy's fascination with setting words to music, an obsession that reached a high point in "Pélleas et Mélisande" some 20 years later. But it's Madame Vasnier Debussy acknowledges as "the only muse to ever inspire musical feelings", and that's he confesses, "only to talk of the musical ones!"

Presented by Richard Langham Smith and originally broadcast on the 150th anniversary of Debussy’s birth.

Producer: Johannah Smith

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in January 2012.

Episode 1. The Couple I Uncoupled

Lord Christian Brighty is the talk of the Regency 'Ton' - a celebrated libertine, a heartthrob and a hero to many. But close-up, he is a spoilt, impetuous, life-ruining bastard… Or at least he was. Because his carefree life of infinite privilege has been upended by an encounter with his new chambermaid - the uneducated but forthright Babigail - who became the first person to tell him the unvarnished truth about his selfish behaviour. Overnight, his lifelong trust that everyone loved him had been replaced with a gnawing fear that Babs was right.

So now, with his narcissism collapsing and a need to prove to Babs he is actually a good person, Lord Brighty is determined to fix all his past wrongs. And by extension all the ills of Regency society. Accompanying him in his quest are Babs (elevated beyond her station to a chambermaid-cum-adviser role), and his butler, Mr Churlington. Although Churley would prefer everything to stay exactly as it used to be (as would all Brighty’s friends, family and the entirety of high society).

In episode 1, Brighty - with Babs' assistance/disapproval - must get nearly-weds Mr Darkly and Miss Lucy-Beth Bonnet to fall back in love, having previously split them up. In his lordship’s absence, the very un-sordid Churlington is left to organise Brighty’s celebrated ‘Sordid Soirée’.

Series 4

Dead Jews

American comedian Alex Edelman returns to take a comic look at what it’s like being a millennial today.

The so-called Millennial generation - those born between 1982 and 1994 - has been much maligned in the press for being lazy, entitled, vain, venal, self-involved, easily offended little emperors.

In the first episode series four Alex Edelman explores why Jews are still so problematic for so many.

With the rise of QAnon and elected members of congress like Marjorie Taylor Greene, antisemitism has somehow crept into the mainstream, especially in America, and a lot of it still seems to go unchecked. As an observant Jew himself, he looks at all the ways his faith, and people's reaction to it, impacts his life and the ways in which society still fails to understand the issues many Jews like him have to live with.
