Series 11

The Impossible Dream

‘The Impossible Dream' is a song that talks of the resilience of the human spirit.

It tells the story of a quest and it's had a surprising journey of its own.

It was originally composed for the 1965 musical The Man of La Mancha which was inspired by Miguel de Cervantes story of Don Quixote. The music was written by Mitch Leigh and the lyrics by Joe Darion.

Now in his 80s, Leigh explains how his first writing partner was WH Auden and talks about why this particular piece struck a chord with African American friends at that time.

Generations on, international Soprano Lesley Garrett recalls how this song inspired her childhood dreams in Doncaster.

Yachtsman of the Year Geoff Holt talks about how this song carried him across the Atlantic on one of the most important voyages of his life.

Plus, former advertising executive Rob Chew explains how this piece is helping him face life’s biggest challenge.

SAT 00:30 Home Sleuth (m0020kj4)
The YouTube gumshoe

When a young primary school teacher is found dead in her kitchen with multiple stab wounds, the police launch an investigation into what happened. The Medical Examiner’s Office declare her death a homicide, but a week later the police rule it a suicide. For true crime YouTuber Gavin, this becomes a case he can’t put down.

After Gavin's story, producer Poppy Damon and true crime expert Rachel Monroe discuss the ethics of home sleuths, and whether their work should be considered entertainment, journalism or policing.

Home Sleuth brings you true crime stories from citizen investigators taking justice into their own hands.

An unidentified murder victim, a schoolteacher’s suicide, the brutal dismembering of animals. The police have investigated these cases, but our sleuths aren’t content with the answers. They begin their own search for justice.

Over five episodes, we hear the gripping story of the role that home sleuths play in investigating crimes and mysteries, from the original internet sleuth in the 1990s through to present-day true crime YouTubers.

In most true crime podcasts, a presenter tells you where the story is going. This time, we break the mould. The sleuths present their own stories. After each episode, true crime expert Rachel Monroe dissects the case and looks deep inside the search for truth. Why do ordinary people dedicate themselves to these investigations? Is it ethical? What does it say about our obsession with true crime?

Home Sleuth is a Furrowed Brow production for BBC Sounds.

Created and produced by Alice Fiennes and Poppy Damon

Associate producer - Brenna Daldorph

Judy Murray

Kirsty Young's castaway is Judy Murray.

A tennis coach since she was 17, she's the current British captain of the Fed Cup, the premier team competition in women's tennis, and was herself at one time ranked 8th in Britain - achievements worth celebrating.

Both her sons have reached the top flight of the game – one as Wimbledon mixed doubles champion, the other becoming the first Brit to win the men's singles in 77 years. In the moments after Andy Murray's heroic win on Centre Court last year it was to her he turned pumping his fists and roaring – as if to say "we have done it".

Judy's many followers on social media know how she spends her time – countless hours travelling up and down the country coaching and working to inspire children to take up the game.

She says, "I've always been competitive. I'm like Andy, or maybe he's like me – I wear my heart on my sleeve. And when something is great, then yep, I am right into it".

The next challenge was even more ambitious - a life size reproduction of Tutankhamun's tomb.

Roger Law travels to Madrid to discover the secrets behind these extraordinary creations.

Steve Haines also creates great works of art - for other artists.

2. Ingenuity and Skill

Roger Law goes in search of the entrepreneurs who are behind some of the Britain's best designs and inventions.

In a converted garage in rural Cambridgeshire, Wesley West has been busy creating real objects out of almost anything he can find. His garden is full of robots made of cartons and iron creatures of various shapes and sizes, and he has worked in advertising for many years making finely crafted objects for his clients. All Wesley's ingenious solutions are made by hand then filmed or photographed, and no computer is involved. Roger steps into an intriguing world where everything is, in its own way, real.

Tim Webber on the other hand does all his effects on the computer. He works at Framestore, a post-production house in London, and he is the magician behind the Harry Potter films. Roger joins him in Soho to find out how these visual effects are created, and what it is that British artists can offer the film industry.

Two contrasting creators, both of whom have plenty to offer in ingenuity and skill, either with or without the aid of a computer.

Comedy and alcohol have often been linked down the years, but why do the two go hand-in-glove?

The days of the seven-round lunch are - for most - no longer part of the cut-and-thrust of comedy writing and performing, but booze and laughter are still very closely linked, both on and off-stage.

In conversation with writers and performers across the generations, the connections between alcohol and entertainment are explored.

TUE 22:00 Henry Normal: A Normal... (m000sj8s)
Communication

"Shove up National Treasures. We need to make room for Henry Normal"
Simon O'Hagan - Radio Times

The seventh instalment in this acclaimed, occasional series in which acclaimed, occasional writer Henry Normal tackles those subjects so big only radio can possibly contain them. So far Henry has covered ‘Family’, ‘Life’, ‘Love’, ‘Imagination’, ‘Nature’ and ‘The Universe’; in this new episode he explores ‘Communication’, recorded with a virtual audience.

Through poetry, stories, jokes and quotes Henry will be looking at the way ‘how’ we communicate colours ‘what’ we communicate and exploring ‘why’ we communicate in the first place.

Henry Normal is a multi-award winning writer, producer and poet. Co-writer of award winning TV programmes such as The Royle Family, The Mrs Merton Show, Coogan’s Run and Paul Calf, and producer of, amongst many others, Oscar-Nominated Philomena, Gavin and Stacey and Alan Partridge.

He’s published eight collections of poetry including his most recent ‘The Beauty Within Shadow’. Plus his memoir written with Angela Pell ‘A Normal Family’ everyday adventure with our autistic son.

Praise for previous episodes in this series:

"It's a rare and lovely thing: half an hour of radio that stops you short, gently demands your attention and then wipes your tears away while you have to have a little sit down"

"It's a real treat to hear a seasoned professional like Henry taking command of this evening comedy spot to deliver a show that's idiosyncratic and effortlessly funny"

"Not heard anything that jumps from hilarious to moving in such an intelligent, subtle way as Henry Normal's show"

Written and performed by Henry Normal

The Villain in 6 Chapters

Exploring characters from literature, stage and screen, actor Toby Jones celebrates the mercurial world of the villain.

There are the characters we love, and then there are the characters we love to hate. Some of the most memorable ones in drama and fiction are villains and our relationship with them can be deeper than the characters we’re supposed to be rooting for.

In this programme we tell the tale of this love-hate relationship with the baddie and discover that the villain is more than just a foil for the hero – they are a reflection of us all.

Introducing the story in six chapters from his secret lair actor Toby Jones delves into a the vaults of villainy; from the hideous countenances to deranged governesses, from the dark side to the cads and femme fatales the programme brings into the spotlight a collection of evil doers and assesses whether they deserve sympathy, condemnation or anti-hero status.

We live in the age of the anti-hero; characters which proliferate popular culture that are no longer simply goodies and baddies. They are cherished in critically acclaimed American dramas: Breaking Bad has Walter White and The Sopranos has the eponymous Tony. The anti-hero is a complex character. They can commit truly appalling, villainous acts – but we’re encouraged to see the reasons behind those actions, to sympathise with them, to understand what makes them do what they do and to hope for redemption.

As the Walter Whites and Tony Sopranos emerge, this programme reconsiders classic villainy and analyses whether the increasingly popular anti-hero is threatening to unseat the villain and resign them to pantomime and comic book stories as serious drama abandons real baddies.

As Toby Jones explores the wicked worlds of our favourite villains their nefarious natures are assessed by Shakespearean scholars Paul Edmondson and Carol Rutter, an academic specialising in Victorian fiction Professor John Sutherland, Comedy and film history Glenn Mitchell and actors Emily Raymond, Michael Roberts and Jonathan Rigby.

Producer: Stephen Garner

WED 22:30 Chain Reaction (b08dn2gq)
Series 12

Sara Cox Interviews Joe Lycett

The return of the hostless chat show as presenter Sara Cox interviews comedian Joe Lycett.

Chain Reaction is the talk show with a twist where one week's interviewee becomes the next week's interviewer. John Cleese was first in the hot seat back in 1991 and since then, a procession of big names from the world of comedy and entertainment including Jennifer Saunders, Jarvis Cocker and Eddie Izzard have helped continue the chain.

Since the early days of The Girlie Show on Channel 4, Sara Cox has gone on to become one of the UK's best loved presenters. She is perhaps most well-known as a ratings hit in the early morning breakfast chair on BBC Radio 1 and her regular TV and radio appearances since then have included hosting BBC 2's Great Pottery Throw Down, appearing on myriad panel shows and pressing the nation's collective nostalgia button every Friday night on her very own Radio 2 Sounds of the Eighties show.

Sara's interview pick is Joe Lycett because "he makes me happy" and because someone needed to finally chart his much discussed journey "from Birmingham to 10th hottest man in the world". Joe is a stand-up comedian who some know as "the parking fine man" from 8 out of 10 Cats Does Countdown while others celebrate him for any number of acclaimed live tours and festival shows that have delighted the British comedy viewing public in recent years. This programme not only confirms that Joe is a man who can famously write a show title - "That's the Way A Ha A Ha, Joe Lycett" and "If Joe Lycett Then You Should Have Put a Ring On It" to name just two - but also hints at a addictive fondness for baths.

Producer: Richard Morris

4. Pioneers

Roger Law goes in search of the entrepreneurs who are behind some of the Britain's best designs and inventions.

Charlie Paton may not be able to turn water into wine but he is working on making seawater turn into a cooling system for hot and arid countries. The invention could increase crop yields in the driest parts of Africa as it uses a natural resource to cool greenhouses. As he says, "It's counter-intuitive to most people. Anybody who knows anything knows you don't have seawater in greenhouses and you don't have greenhouses in arid countries. On every level it is the opposite of what we do." Yet he believes this system can and will work, as he explains to Roger Law.

Roger's second guest helped create some of the most useful objects for those with disabilities by recognising what they themselves wanted. Roger Coleman first got involved in a friend's kitchen after she developed multiple sclerosis. 'I asked her what the most important thing was about the design. She said 'I want the neighbours to be jealous!' It was a real light bulb moment for me. That's about being like everyone else."

It set Roger on the path of designing a whole range of things that people really wanted, from the big button telephone to brightly coloured seating for kids in special schools which helped integrate them into the classrooms. It also led him to develop medical equipment for the NHS that suited users in hospital, such as a unique design for a resuscitation trolley.

Two contrasting inventors who are changing the world one small design at a time.

Produced by Mark Rickards.

Alvin Hall chooses James Baldwin

Alvin Hall is the friendly face of financial reality, lecturing, writing and broadcasting on the subject of managing money. But he is also passionately interested in fine art, music and literature, and his nomination for a Great Life is that of writer and Civil Rights activist, James Baldwin.

Baldwin was born in 1924 in Harlem and his achievements in overcoming a difficult start in life were prodigious. For much of his life he lived outside the United States, returning in the late 1950s to support the nascent Civil Rights movement, though the Movement itself had some problems with his homosexuality. Throughout his life he continued to write about the experiences of being black in 20th century America and is now widely regarded as the pre-eminent African-American writer of the century.

Dr Douglas Field of the University of Manchester, who has written several books on James Baldwin, discusses Baldwin's life and achievements with Alvin and with Matthew Parris.

Ross Lovegrove has earned the nickname 'Captain Organic' through his extraordinary designs based on organic shapes and forms. "Ten thousand years ago most of our ancestors lived in caves. They made things from organic material and I don't think we've moved far from that." From this starting point Lovegrove has developed the most extraordinarily beautiful objects which can be used in everyday life.

Hussein Chalayan has created his innovative work in the world of fashion. Roger Law talks to him about how he sees his role. "I am a designer," he says, "but I happen to have a narrative approach". Chalayan has become famous for his bold and daring productions, and he explains his thinking behind the events which showcase his work. Roger gets to discuss dresses that can reconfigure whilst being worn, including one which can disappear completely. "Startling stuff," concludes Roger, "especially if you happen to be wearing it at the time."

FRI 10:30 James Baldwin’s Last Amen (b04cfdhm)
The work of the American writer James Baldwin gained a new audience in the months following the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests in Europe and the USA.

His observations on race, power and black identity, featured in clips from 1960s chat shows, were widely shared on social media. A spirited performance in a 1965 Cambridge Union debate titled The American Dream is at the Expense of the American Negro is now considered a landmark moment.

But in the late 1980s, Baldwin's light was fading, and he was living a quiet life in the south of France when theatre producer and director Anton Phillips of Carib Theatre decided to revive his 1954 play The Amen Corner at London's Tricycle Theatre. It transferred to London's Lyric Theatre in Shaftesbury Avenue - becoming the first all black production to transfer from Fringe to the West End.

At Phillips' invitation, Baldwin made the trip to London to meet the cast in final rehearsals and see the production open.

During the visit he stayed with one of the cast, Clarke Peters, and gave Joan Bakewell what would be one of his last interviews. He died a few months later in December 1987.

In this programme, Clarke Peters recalls that landmark 1987 production, his relationship with "Jimmy", and the lasting legacy of an extraordinary and insightful writer.
