SAT 00:00 Soul Music (b075pxfx)
Series 22

Bring Him Home

Bring Him Home is a beautiful and moving prayer-in-song that has developed meaning and identity outside of the hit musical, from Les Miserables.

What has been its impact?

Celebrated tenor, Alfie Boe has sung it many times in the West End and on Broadway. He discusses what the song means to him.

Herbert Kretzmer talks about the agonising process of writing the lyrics.

The Greater Manchester Police Male Voice Choir recorded a version especially for the programme; one of their members describes singing it at the funeral of PC Dave Phillips in 2015.

The original Cosette, from Les Miserables, Rebecca Caine now sings this song - written for a male voice - regularly as part of international recitals.

And for Becky Douglas it will forever be a reminder of her daughter whose death inspired the foundation of a leprosy charity.

Jeremy Summerly, Director of Music at St Peter's College, Oxford plays through the piece and describes why it moves us emotionally.

Series about pieces of music with a powerful emotional impact.

Producer: Karen Gregor

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in April 2016.

SAT 00:30 Home Sleuth (m0020c2j)
The DNA detective

Valerie doesn’t know who her grandfather is or how to find him. She’s told that African American genealogy is ‘too hard’. There aren’t enough DNA records of black people. It’s an impossible case. But Valerie is driven by the desire to solve a family mystery, so she investigates herself. What she finds changes everything.

After Valerie’s story, producer Alice Fiennes and true crime expert Rachel Monroe discuss how Valerie's field of genetic genealogy was used to help identify the Golden State Killer, and why the certainty of forensic science is so appealing to true crime fans.

Home Sleuth brings you true crime stories from citizen investigators taking justice into their own hands.

An unidentified murder victim, a schoolteacher’s suicide, the brutal dismembering of animals. The police have investigated these cases, but our sleuths aren’t content with the answers. They begin their own search for justice.

Over five episodes, we hear the gripping story of the role that home sleuths play in investigating crimes and mysteries, from the original internet sleuth in the 1990s through to present-day true crime YouTubers.

In most true crime podcasts, a presenter tells you where the story is going. This time, we break the mould. The sleuths present their own stories. After each episode, true crime expert Rachel Monroe dissects the case and looks deep inside the search for truth. Why do ordinary people dedicate themselves to these investigations? Is it ethical? What does it say about our obsession with true crime?

Home Sleuth is a Furrowed Brow production for BBC Sounds.

Created and produced by Alice Fiennes and Poppy Damon
Associate producer - Brenna Daldorph
Sound Design by John Scott
Fact-checking by Arthur Gompertz
Editorial consultation and additional sound design by Nick Van Der Kolk at Wingdog Audio
Commissioned by Luke Eldridge and Nicky Birch for BBC Sounds

Sue Barker

TV presenter and former profession tennis player, Sue Barker, is castaway by Lauren Laverne.

Sue presented BBC TV’s Wimbledon coverage for nearly three decades, before stepping down in 2022, when she received a standing ovation.

Sue was born in Devon in 1956, and was educated at the Marist Convent School where she had a reputation for being naughty – until her PE teacher, Mrs Chadwick, diverted her energy into tennis. Aged 11 she was selected for training by the local tennis coach Arthur Roberts, who had already guided players to Grand Slam titles. Sue started playing – and winning – junior tournaments.

She turned professional at 17, and moved to the US, joining a new women’s tour set up by Billie Jean King. During her career, she reached the ranking of World No. 3, playing and defeating her contemporaries, including Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Evonne Goolagong and Virginia Wade. Her biggest win came at the French Open in 1976 where, aged 20, she took her first – and only – Grand Slam title. Her biggest disappointment came at Wimbledon the following year, when she lost in the semi-final, despite being the clear favourite.

Plagued by injuries, she retired from tennis in 1985. She began commentating on Australia’s Channel 7, before moving to BskyB in the UK, and then joining the BBC in 1993.

She has hosted Wimbledon, Grandstand, the Summer and Winter Olympics, the Commonwealth Games, BBC Sports Personality of the Year, and A Question of Sport. When she announced her retirement from TV, her idol Billie Jean King called her the GOAT, the ‘greatest of all time’.

MON 09:30 A Walk of One's Own: Virginia Woolf on Foot (b064yjm6)
1. Spain

Virginia Woolf, sun hat firmly in place, scrambling along the dusty footpaths of Southern Spain.

An unexpected image of the very English, upright writer more commonly associated with Bloomsbury.

But in 1923 Woolf and her husband Leonard made an adventurous journey by boat, train, bus and mule to the remote mountain village of Yegen, where the British writer Gerald Brenan had made his home.

In a burst of intense, exploratory friendship, Woolf walked with Brenan through a landscape of goats and asphodels, opening up to him, and opening herself to the allure of Spain.

“The mind’s contents break into short sentences. It is hot; the old man; the frying pan; the bottle of wine”.

She wrote about riding mules, about village sounds, and as she got into the rhythm of rural Spain fantasised about a new life abroad.

Virginia Woolf was the perfect exponent of the belief that walking clears the mind, expands the soul and strengthens the leg. To mark the centenary of Woolf’s first published novel, her biographer. Alexandra Harris takes us on four walks which inspired her, shaped her writing and character, and tell her story.

Harris begins by seeking out the paths where the determined walker would have tramped - through olive groves, past tangled vines, in thrall to the smell of orange blossom.

She’s accompanied in this Spanish sojourn by another writer, also seduced by the beauty of the Alpujarras, Chris Stewart, of “Driving Over Lemons” fame.

Stewart was inspired 27 years ago to move to the area described in ‘South From Granada’, Gerald Brenan’s classic portrait of Andalucía, in which Virginia Woolf’s visit is also described.

They scramble up hillsides, leap into pools of icy water, and are deafened by the sound of cicadas, contemplating Virginia Woolf's time, walking and writing under the Spanish sun.

2. Kensington Gardens

Made to mark the centenary of Virginia Woolf’s first published novel in 1915, her biographer Alexandra Harris takes another of four walks which help to tell her story.

Alexandra wonders at the link between her writing and her passion for walking - exploring where it all began, in London's Kensington Gardens.

Accompanied by Woolf biographer Dame Hermione Lee - the pair set out on a walk which Virginia and would have done probably 20,000 times - from 22 Hyde Park Gate, across the busy traffic and into the park.

Re-enacting the scene, Hermione and Alex recall how - ‘calling for his dog and his daughter’ - Leslie Stephen, father to Virginia Woolf, set off twice daily for a constitutional walk around the park.

Passing the woman selling her “balloon of quivering airballs”, the young girl entered a public world and set her imagination to work on all she encountered: people talking and shouting, skaters, statues, ranks of uniformed nannies.

All her life she would remember in vivid detail the early routines of sailing boats on the Round Pond, touching the bark of the ‘Crocodile Tree’, reading in the grass and starting to match words to experience.

Mike Fitt, the Royal Parks honorary historian joins them, to add his particular knowledge of Kensington Gardens to the mix.

TUE 22:00 Scott Bennett: Stuff (m001t93g)
Before becoming an award-winning comedian Scott Bennett was an award-winning product designer, a career he gave up to avoid workplace pressure and constant scrutiny. In his time, Scott has designed everything from water cans and hydraulic lifting systems to storage boxes and, in one instance, a flat-pack bondage cage.

As a former product designer, Scott now feels guilty about the part he’s played in how consumerism impacts the world we live in. He asks whether it’s possible to live a simple life when our lives are filled with so much, and probably too much, stuff.

In this bespoke show recorded at The Stand in Newcastle, Scott takes aim at the mindfulness industry, smart technology, aspirational lifestyles, product packaging and, his new bugbear, paper straws.

WED 09:30 A Walk of One's Own: Virginia Woolf on Foot (b066vwsd)
3. Cornwall

When a new steam train connected Paddington to St Ives, Leslie Stephen, Virginia Woolf's father, decided that taking a family house at the tip of England would benefit the whole family. So, packing up the entire household - children, dogs, servants and books – the Stephens travelled West. Talland House would be their deeply loved holiday home for 3 months every year.

From Gurnard's Head to Zennor, the young Virginia learnt to stride out on ambitiously long walks over rugged gorsy cliff paths and lonely granite-strewn moors. She would never stop re-writing these landscapes of early happiness - in her novels, her diaries, her memoirs; and she would keep coming back – alone or with family and friends – 'bringing the sheaves' of her adult life back to the places of her childhood.

Woolf's walking was the counterpart to her imaginative roaming, and the rhythm of her steps would often set the pace of her prose. Alexandra Harris sets out to follow some of her paths by the sea with writer Michael Bird.

Stewart Lee: Unreliable Narrator

Comedian and writer Stewart Lee draws on a lifetime of professional untruths to consider the disorienting and apparently all-encompassing world of the unreliable narrator.

Why, if we appreciate truth, objectivity and authenticity so much, do we also love the distortions of almost all narrative art?

Does the basic human desire to tell stories mean that none of us are ever really telling the truth?

What happens when the idea of manipulating the narrative leaves the world of entertainment and enters the world of politics?

From the British Library to the middle of a Victorian graveyard, in novels and poems, documentaries, the songs of Bob Dylan and stand-up comedy, Stewart picks through the archives and encounters a host of more or less reliable voices including Mediaevalist Dr Hetta Howes, writer and critic Jennifer Hodgson, political commentator Nesrine Malik, poet Rob Auton, filmmaker Ben Rivers, Dylanologist Nish Kumar, comedian Russell Kane and one or two devious special guests.

Be on your guard, expect the unexpected and suspend your disbelief as we head out in search for something to rely on.

4. Sussex

Alexandra Harris visits East Sussex, where Virginia Woolf lived and walked from 1911 until her death.

Asham, was the Woolf's first home - re-named 'Little Talland House' - making it the descendent of the Cornish holiday home she had loved as a child. Virginia and Leonard lived through the first world war here, and left with great sadness when the lease was up.

Their next home, Monks House was small and basic, but it was theirs. The garden was vast, with a view on to the fields and hills beyond, where Woolf loved to roam alone for hours, reciting her words to herself after a morning writing. There were almost too many possible paths: towards Charleston – the home of Woolf's sister Vanessa, or across Iford Down, or along the river to Piddinghoe.

In the company of Scarlett Baron, Alexandra Harris steps out in Woolf's footsteps to the river Ouse and Southease, the route she would have taken most often, to the post office.

Arthur Smith on Emil Zátopek

Matthew Parris – himself current holder of the House of Commons marathon record time – meets comedian Arthur Smith, who also turns out to have been a runner when he was younger, and whose choice for a Great Life is an athlete whom he has admired since his childhood.

Emil Zátopek emerged onto the international stage in 1948 when he became a sensation at the Olympics in London, but it was his performance in the 1952 Helsinki Olympics which put him in the record books. Already an established distance runner, he bagged gold in the 5000 and 10000 metres and then, having previously given no hint that he would be a champion marathon runner, he also won that race.

The expert witness is Pat Butcher, writer and ex-runner, who is working on a biography of Zátopek, and he argues that no-one is likely ever to equal Zátopek's achievement in winning gold in three different distance events.

Zátopek retired from competitive running in 1957 and later fell heavily out of favour with the post- Dubcek regime in Czechoslovakia but was rehabilitated after 1989 and remains a much-cherished hero in Czech Republic and among the running community.

The Impossible Dream

In this series that explores those pieces of music that never fail to move us, this week we feature, 'The Impossible Dream', a song that talks of the resilience of the human spirit.

It tells the story of a quest and it's had a surprising journey of it's own. It was originally composed for the 1965 musical The Man of La Mancha which was inspired by Miguel de Cervantes story of Don Quixote. The music was written by Mitch Leigh and the lyrics by Joe Darion.

Now in his 80's Leigh explains how his first writing partner was WH Auden and talks about why this particular piece struck a chord with African American friends at that time. Generations on, international Soprano Lesley Garrett recalls how this song inspired her childhood dreams in Doncaster, Yachtsman of the Year Geoff Holt talks about how this song carried him across the Atlantic on one of the most important voyages of his life and former advertising executive Rob Chew explains how this piece is helping him face lifes biggest challenge.

FRI 10:30 Home Sleuth (m0020kj4)
The YouTube gumshoe

When a young primary school teacher is found dead in her kitchen with multiple stab wounds, the police launch an investigation into what happened. The Medical Examiner’s Office declare her death a homicide, but a week later the police rule it a suicide. For true crime YouTuber Gavin, this becomes a case he can’t put down.

After Gavin's story, producer Poppy Damon and true crime expert Rachel Monroe discuss the ethics of home sleuths, and whether their work should be considered entertainment, journalism or policing.
