The BBC has announced that it has a sustainable plan for the future of the BBC Singers, in association with The VOCES8 Foundation.

SAT 00:00 Soul Music (b0375qt8)
Series 16

Don't Leave Me This Way

Don't Leave Me This Way was written in the early 1970s by songwriters Huff, Gamble and Gilbert.

They were the composers behind the famous black American Philadelphia Sound.

It was first performed by Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, featuring Teddy Pendergrass on lead vocals.

It later became a hit for Thelma Houston and The Communards.

As the title suggests, the song is all about longing, yearning and loss.

Remarkable stories reflect the pain expressed in this soul classic, including one told by Dr Dan Gottlieb, a quadriplegic therapist who befriended Teddy Pendergrass after he became paralysed in a car accident.

Sharon Wachsler recalls dancing to the version made famous by The Communards in 1986 before a devastating illness left her housebound and reliant on her beloved service dog Gadget, who gave her a reason to keep going. When he died, the song was the only way she could express her grief over his loss.

The Reverend Richard Coles, formerly of The Communards, talks about the significance of Don't Leave Me This Way as a dancefloor anthem for young gay men in the 1980s that was later to become associated with the AIDS epidemic that took so many of their lives.

Series about pieces of music with a powerful emotional impact.

Producer: Maggie Ayre

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in July 2013.

SAT 00:30 Home Sleuth (m00204bb)
The cat killer’s nemesis

Animal-lover Tony is on the trail of a cat killer. He believes that someone is killing and mutilating pets across south-east England. But not everyone agrees this is murder, or even a crime. As Tony pursues a nightmarish villain, he must also contend with those who believe he’s chasing a shadow.

After Tony’s story, producer Poppy Damon speaks to true crime expert Rachel Monroe on the role that ordinary citizens like Tony play when investigating cases alongside the police, and the sacrifices that home sleuths make in devoting their time to a cause.

Home Sleuth brings you true crime stories from citizen investigators taking justice into their own hands.

An unidentified murder victim, a schoolteacher’s suicide, the brutal dismembering of animals. The police have investigated these cases, but our sleuths aren’t content with the answers. They begin their own search for justice.

Over five episodes, we hear the gripping story of the role that home sleuths play in investigating crimes and mysteries, from the original internet sleuth in the 1990s through to present-day true crime YouTubers.

In most true crime podcasts, a presenter tells you where the story is going. This time, we break the mould. The sleuths present their own stories. After each episode, the series producers sit down with true crime expert Rachel Monroe to examine what the case can tell us about the wider world of true crime. Why do ordinary people dedicate themselves to these investigations? Is it ethical? What does it say about our obsession with true crime?

Home Sleuth is a Furrowed Brow production for BBC Sounds.

Created and produced by Alice Fiennes and Poppy Damon

Associate producer - Brenna Daldorph

Sound Design by John Scott

Fact-checking by Arthur Gompertz

SAT 07:30 RisingTideFallingStar by Philip Hoare (Omnibus) (b08y76gg)
In his book, Philip Hoare seeks out various shorelines, examining our need to be immersed in water.

Or at least to be near it.

He arrives in Provincetown, Cape Cod, boards the Dolphin VIII, and is soon amongst loons and gannets, minkes and rorquals. He also thinks about Herman Melville and a passage from Moby Dick - 'a vast sound of sighing and sobbing' - but what is this phenomena?

To Scotland. To the North Sea and he remembers family trips to Torquay, destination caravan-land. And it leads him to think about another inhabitant of this seaside town. A woman of the 1830's, a famous poet, who came to know the life maritime as a blessing and a curse.

Then to a dry dock in Portsmouth, and to Greenwich, to enjoy special access to sartorial artefacts worn by a legend of the high-seas - "there's a naval strategy to this design: the sweep of the lapel, the rise of the collar, the arch of the pockets."

A final quest sees him going to Bantry Bay. He's previously been swimming with whales and dolphins, but never with 'aurelia aurita', let alone 'chrysaora hysoscella'. Truth be told, it's quite an unnerving experience with these unpredictable creatures.

Omnibus of five parts read by Tobias Menzies

Producer Duncan Minshull.

John McEnroe

Tennis player and commentator, John McEnroe is castaway by Kirsty Young

John won three singles and five doubles Wimbledon titles, four singles and four doubles at the US Open and was ranked number one in the world for four consecutive years in the 1980s.

John McEnroe grew up in New York and didn't pick up a tennis racquet until the age of eight, but his talent was quickly spotted and he began to compete in junior tournaments.

In 1977, aged 18 and between high school and university, he qualified for the main draw at Wimbledon and reached the semi-finals where he lost to Jimmy Connors. By the end of the tournament his on-court behaviour - shouting, haranguing umpires and abusing his racquet - earned him the nickname 'Superbrat'.

He made his first Wimbledon final against Bjorn Borg in 1980. In one of the finest matches in history, despite winning a tiebreak 18-16 to win the fourth set, he lost the match. He beat Borg the following year to win his first Wimbledon singles title.

1984 was the best year in John's career: he won 82 out of 85 matches he played, but it was also the year when he was beaten at the French Open by Ivan Lendl, who replaced him as number one.

John married the actress Tatum O'Neal in 1986. They divorced in the mid-1990s and he has been married to the singer Patty Smyth since 1997.

Since retiring in 1992, in addition to his role as tennis commentator, he has been a coach and runs his own tennis academy.

He still plays in tennis tournaments.

Conversations on a Bench - Edinburgh: Janette Ayachi

Poet Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's poetry archives and chooses Conversations on a Bench - Edinburgh as Janette Ayachi crafts a poem inspired by the locals who sit with Anna Scott-Brown as she hears more stories from the people who stop to sit beside her on benches around the country.

In this edition, she sits on a bench in Inverleith Park in Edinburgh.

From the bench there is a panoramic view of both the medieval Old Town and the Georgian New Town. The layering of this strangely three dimensional city of roads and bridges, arches and spires is echoed in the layering of story. A schoolgirl practices her reading, while a man always ready to use his fists regrets a life dominated by drugs.

Hidden lives are revealed and common threads recur as Anna's direct questions elicit poignant and profound responses from those sitting on the bench.

Produced by Adam Fowler.

Search for a Common Culture

Author Lynsey Hanley and Mykaell Riley, founding member of the British roots reggae group Steel Pulse, tell the story of the search for a ‘common culture'.

They follow its permutations in the post-war era with the rise of ‘the common voice’ and a new wave of documentary making, fiercely negotiated around issues of social class, race and the impact of multiculturalism, to the present.

At a time of huge division and polarisation in civil society they ask if its time has come again in the digital age.

Writing in post-war Britain, for critics like Raymond Williams, Richard Hoggart, Stuart Hall and others 'culture' meant two things: first, a whole way of life and the everyday, not just a series of great works accessed and curated by an elite; second, as a way of sharing the arts and learning with the whole of society, of open access for everyone in a properly civic space. Lynsey Hanley, who has written on the history of council estates and urban planning, explores how these two ideas were conjoined. 'Common culture' was for the first time inclusive, involving all the strands of everyday living from youth culture to the pub, the football terrace and the cinema. ‘Culture is ordinary’ wrote Raymond Williams in 1958.

The idea of a common culture meant the opening up of 'high' culture too, tied to mass literacy and learning as part of a wider sense of cultural outreach aimed at the British working class. This was boosted by the work of intellectuals like George Orwell and EP Thompson as well as Richard Hoggart’s landmark book 'The Uses of Literacy' which argued for the democratisation of culture and cultivation of learning through what the author called, in a powerful phrase, ‘civic literacy’.

Mykaell Riley builds on this story, of how ‘common culture’ became deeply contested in the 1970s and ‘80s, forged from representations of working-class identity but weaponised around ideas of race. For the post-Windrush generation of Black British youth the idea of a ‘common culture’ was wrapped around the British flag and harshly policed. Music, especially British reggae groups like Steel Pulse, became part of a cultural fightback - an expression of the new political multiculturalism and proliferation of sub-cultures.

Perhaps there has never been a truly 'common' culture that belongs everyone – that the very idea has a deep ambivalence when used in public life, either championing inclusivity or excluding diversity. But does the first always have to mean the second, can we move beyond this stalemate? In our rancorous post-Brexit era and a wide sense of fatigue with division always seeming more important than what we could - and perhaps do - share in common, could the idea of common culture be thought again in new, de-toxifying and inventive ways? Or have we just become better at thinking about what separates us than what we have in common, more comfortable with difference than what we share in public space?

Contributors include director Ken Loach, curator and writer Aliyah Hasinah, critic and author DJ Taylor, dub poet Linton Kwesi Johnson, director Terence Davies, literary journalist Suzi Feay, singer songwriter Peggy Seger, political journalist Peter Obourne, illustrator and author Nick Hayes, urbanist Adam Greenfield, documentary historian John Corner, director at Byline TV Caolan Robertson and Farrukh Dhondy, a founding commissioning editor for Channel 4.

Frida Kahlo nominated by author Jessie Burton

“We’re talking here about a woman who was Mexican, dark skinned, disabled and queer, who produced art and didn’t allow her disabilities to define her. She defined who she was on her own terms," says Circe Henestrosa, fashion curator, Frida Khalo scholar and co curator of Frida Kahlo: Making Herself Up.

Circe joins Jessie Burton, author of The Miniaturist in discussion about the Mexican artist known for her self-portraits and her distinctive look - the dresses and flowered hair, the monobrow, the piercing stare.

Born in 1907, Kahlo's life was a collage of strength, beauty and pain. She survived polio and a bus crash that should have killed her, as well as a complex, passionate marriage to fellow artist Diego Rivera.

Bring Him Home

Bring Him Home is a beautiful and moving prayer-in-song that has developed meaning and identity outside of the hit musical, from Les Miserables.

What has been its impact?

Celebrated tenor, Alfie Boe has sung it many times in the West End and on Broadway. He discusses what the song means to him.

Herbert Kretzmer talks about the agonising process of writing the lyrics.

The Greater Manchester Police Male Voice Choir recorded a version especially for the programme; one of their members describes singing it at the funeral of PC Dave Phillips in 2015.

The original Cosette, from Les Miserables, Rebecca Caine now sings this song - written for a male voice - regularly as part of international recitals.

And for Becky Douglas it will forever be a reminder of her daughter whose death inspired the foundation of a leprosy charity.

Jeremy Summerly, Director of Music at St Peter's College, Oxford plays through the piece and describes why it moves us emotionally.

FRI 10:30 Home Sleuth (m0020c2j)
The DNA detective

Valerie doesn’t know who her grandfather is or how to find him. She’s told that African American genealogy is ‘too hard’. There aren’t enough DNA records of black people. It’s an impossible case. But Valerie is driven by the desire to solve a family mystery, so she investigates herself. What she finds changes everything.

After Valerie’s story, producer Alice Fiennes and true crime expert Rachel Monroe discuss how Valerie's field of genetic genealogy was used to help identify the Golden State Killer, and why the certainty of forensic science is so appealing to true crime fans.

After each episode, true crime expert Rachel Monroe dissects the case and looks deep inside the search for truth. Why do ordinary people dedicate themselves to these investigations? Is it ethical? What does it say about our obsession with true crime?

Home Sleuth is a Furrowed Brow production for BBC Sounds.
