SAT 00:30 Home Sleuth (m001zx82)
The teenage private eye

Cara leads a double life. As an unassuming teenager from a quaint market town, nobody suspects her of being a private investigator. With an uncanny ability to blend in and spy gadgets to help her, she uncovers wrongdoings. Cara seeks truth and justice, but wrestles with the consequences of finding it.

After Cara’s story, producer Alice Fiennes talks with true crime expert Rachel Monroe, about what TV shows, books and media teach us about crime and the prominence of women like Cara in fictional detective stories.

Home Sleuth brings you true crime stories from citizen investigators taking justice into their own hands.

An unidentified murder victim, a schoolteacher’s suicide, the brutal dismembering of animals. The police have investigated these cases, but our sleuths aren’t content with the answers. They begin their own search for justice.

Over five episodes, we hear the gripping story of the role that home sleuths play in investigating crimes and mysteries, from the original internet sleuth in the 1990s through to present-day true crime YouTubers.

In most true crime podcasts, a presenter tells you where the story is going. This time, we break the mould. The sleuths present their own stories. After each episode, the series producers sit down with true crime expert Rachel Monroe to examine what the case can tell us about the wider world of true crime. Why do ordinary people dedicate themselves to these investigations? Is it ethical? What does it say about our obsession with true crime?

Home Sleuth is a Furrowed Brow production for BBC Sounds.

Created and produced by Alice Fiennes and Poppy Damon.
Associate producer - Brenna Daldorph.
Sound Design by John Scott.
Fact-checking by Arthur Gompertz.

Series 7

Episode 5

The globetrotting, trash-picking, aisle-rolling storyteller is back with more words of wit and wisdom.

* A story called Active Shooter

* More extracts from the diary he has kept daily for forty years

With sardonic wit and incisive social critiques, David Sedaris has become one of America's pre-eminent humour writers. The great skill with which he slices through cultural euphemisms and political correctness proves that he is a master of satire and one of the most observant writers addressing the human condition today.

David Sedaris's first book, Barrel Fever (1994), which included The SantaLand Diaries. was a critical and commercial success, as were his follow-up efforts, Naked (1997), Holidays on Ice (1997) and Me Talk Pretty One Day (2000). He became known for his bitingly funny recollections of his youth, family life and travels, making semi-celebrities out of his parents and siblings.

David Sedaris has been nominated for three Grammy Awards for Best Spoken Word and Best Comedy Album. A feature film adaptation of his story C.O.G. was released after a premier at the Sundance Film Festival (2013). He has been a contributor to BBC Radio 4 since 1996.

TUE 10:30 Jarvis on McCullers (b06zh03z)
American author Carson McCullers, has never been as well known as contemporaries Harper Lee and Tennessee Williams, but nonetheless she remains a most remarkable and individual writer.

She only wrote a few works, in large part because rheumatic fever left her paralysed in her left arm, and she was beset by ill health and alcoholism for many of her fifty years. She also married a man twice who commited suicide and tried to get her to do the same.

But her writing style was filled with the heat, sounds and smells of the American south, and the characters who populated books like 'The Ballad of the Sad Cafe', 'The Heart is a Lonely Hunter' and 'A Member of the Wedding' - were most commonly troubled misfits.

Musician Jarvis Cocker hears from a number of Carson McCullers' fans , including academic Carlos Dews, author Laura Barton and musician Suzanne Vega, who has not only written and starred in three versions of a play about Carson, but often feels herself to be in conversation with her spirit.

Jarvis explains his own personal devotion, explaining how Carson's ability to bypass the brain and connect straight to the heart is what makes her such an important figure to him.

Produced by Geoff Bird.

Desert Island Myths: Three Centuries Of Robinson Crusoe

Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe was first published on 25 April 1719. By the end of the 19th century it had become the most reissued, adapted and translated novel in the world.

Over the years, this island adventure story has been interpreted in a huge variety of ways: by critics as the first ever novel in English; by political theorists as an allegory of colonialism; by economists as a story of primitive accumulation; by anthropologists as a classic statement of nature and civilisation; and by educationalists as a story of learning by doing.

The book has also inspired countless creative works, from Gulliver’s Travels, Swiss Family Robinson and Treasure Island to Lost In Space, Cast Away and The Martian. Not forgetting several reality TV shows and the ever popular Desert Island Discs.

Over 300 years on from Robinson Crusoe's publication, cultural historian Christopher Frayling sets sail through the BBC archive to explore the creation and legacy of this controversial text.

FRI 10:00 Soul Music (b0375qt8)
Series 16

Don't Leave Me This Way

Don't Leave Me This Way was written in the early 1970s by songwriters Huff, Gamble and Gilbert who were the composers behind the famous black American Philadelphia Sound.

It was first performed by Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, featuring Teddy Pendergrass on lead vocals, and later became a hit for Thelma Houston and The Communards. As the title suggests, the song is all about longing, yearning and loss.

Remarkable stories reflect the pain expressed in this soul classic, including one told by Dr Dan Gottlieb, a quadriplegic therapist who befriended Teddy Pendergrass after he became paralysed in a car accident.

Sharon Wachsler recalls dancing to the version made famous by The Communards in 1986 before a devastating illness left her housebound and reliant on her beloved service dog Gadget, who gave her a reason to keep going. When he died, the song was the only way she could express her grief over his loss.

The Reverend Richard Coles, formerly of The Communards, talks about the significance of Don't Leave Me This Way as a dancefloor anthem for young gay men in the 1980s that was later to become associated with the AIDS epidemic that took so many of their lives.

Series about pieces of music with a powerful emotional impact.

Producer: Maggie Ayre

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in July 2013.

FRI 10:30 Home Sleuth (m00204bb)
The cat killer’s nemesis

Animal-lover Tony is on the trail of a cat killer. He believes that someone is killing and mutilating pets across south-east England. But not everyone agrees this is murder, or even a crime. As Tony pursues a nightmarish villain, he must also contend with those who believe he’s chasing a shadow.

After Tony’s story, producer Poppy Damon speaks to true crime expert Rachel Monroe on the role that ordinary citizens like Tony play when investigating cases alongside the police, and the sacrifices that home sleuths make in devoting their time to a cause.

Created and produced by Alice Fiennes and Poppy Damon

Associate producer - Brenna Daldorph

Sound Design by John Scott

Fact-checking by Arthur Gompertz

Editorial consultation and additional sound design by Nick Van Der Kolk at Wingdog Audio

Commissioned by Luke Eldridge and Nicky Birch for BBC Sounds
