SAT 00:30 The Art of Adultery (b0717gdz)
Natalie Haynes explores why infidelity has inspired artists, writers and dramatists since the Ancient Greeks.

For centuries, popular culture has been enthralled by infidelity, moving from the ancient tales of Helen of Troy and Medea through to the popularity of modern day dramas like 'The Affair' and 'Doctor Foster'.

Along the way, few artists of note seem to have been able to avoid its dramatic appeal, whether Chaucer in Miller's Tale, Shakespeare in 'Othello' or Tolstoy in 'Anna Karenina' and 'War and Peace'. In 'The Art of Adultery'.

Natalie Haynes sets out to find out what the nature of that appeal might be, and also considers whether the way the basic story of unfaithful partners tells us anything about the times and places from where the particular stories are born.

Natalie meets author Julian Barnes to talk about his own novel 'Talking it Over' as well as attitudes to infidelity in 19th century France.

She visits Tate Britain to find out how attitudes on this side of the Channel were changing during the same period.

Filmmaker Jane Gillooly talks about her documentary 'Suitcase of Love and Shame' featuring recordings made by a straying couple for each other in 1960s America.

And Natalie hears from novelist Stella Duffy about how recent changes in attitudes have affected how gay and lesbian literature has tackled the subject.

SAT 10:00 Great Lives - 400 and Counting (m0010h2x)
1. Eric and Ernest

From Eric Morecambe to Ernest Shackleton.

In the first of three programmes, Matthew Parris and original producer Miles Warde reveal how the BBC Radio 4's Great Lives series was born, as they recall the rows, revelations and rank incompetence behind 400 editions.

Deep in the summer of 2001, a new programme tiptoed out onto the airwaves.

The concept was simple – book someone famous to talk about someone dead. Except there was a problem; famous people don’t talk much about someone else.

In a world of the celebrity plug, getting voices to commit to a show where they couldn’t talk about themselves proved tough. 12 slots to fill, and nobody signed up.

400 episodes later… Barbara Castle, Beryl Bainbridge, Bernard Manning, eventually everyone says yes.

In this episode, Christopher Hitchens was so incensed presenter Matthew Parris that he walked out. “You’re a bleeding Tory,” he said, “and always have been. Have you done? I have to be somewhere at one.”

Featuring material never previously played - nominators and experts about their hopes and fears.

Plus archive of original presenters Joan Bakewell and Humphrey Carpenter; plus a special selection of the very best of Great Lives.

“There’s a joy in judging people by their choice of hero. It’s one reason Matthew Parris’s Great Lives series has run for 40 series.” Ben Preston, Radio Times editor, 2016.

Programme extracts include:

* Penelope Keith on Morecambe and Wise
* Piers Morgan on WG Grace
* Bernard Manning on Mother Teresa

Rosie Boycott on Ernest Shackleton.

Produced at BBC Bristol by Miles Warde.

Made for BBC Radio 4 Extra and first broadcast in December 2017.

Series 7

Episode 1

The globetrotting, trash-picking, aisle-rolling storyteller shares more words of wit and wisdom:

* Father Time, reflecting on his elderly father, the passing of time and the different generations of his family.

* Extracts from his diaries

With sardonic wit and incisive social critiques, David Sedaris has become one of America's pre-eminent humour writers. The great skill with which he slices through cultural euphemisms and political correctness proves that he is a master of satire and one of the most observant writers addressing the human condition today.

David Sedaris's first book, Barrel Fever (1994), which included The SantaLand Diaries. was a critical and commercial success, as were his follow-up efforts, Naked (1997), Holidays on Ice (1997) and Me Talk Pretty One Day (2000). He became known for his bitingly funny recollections of his youth, family life and travels, making semi-celebrities out of his parents and siblings.

David Sedaris has been nominated for three Grammy Awards for Best Spoken Word and Best Comedy Album. A feature film adaptation of his story C.O.G. was released after a premier at the Sundance Film Festival (2013). He has been a contributor to BBC Radio 4 since 1996.

Poet Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's poetry archive and selects Stories In Verse - Goblin Market by Christina Rossetti And The Forsaken Merman by Matthew Arnold.

These are two imaginative poems about the supernatural.

Written in 1859, Goblin Market by Christina Rossetti draws on European folklore which often tells of humans who attempted to eat fairy food and faced dire consequences.

It marks a classic confrontation between innocence and corruption.

Written earlier, The Forsaken Merman by Matthew Arnold was influenced by the Danish story of the abandoned Merman.

It’s a rich poem about green sea, sea beasts and sea snakes that coil and twine and bask in the brine.

MON 09:30 Soundstage (b05mtcrk)
1. Midnight at the Oasis

Wildlife sound recordist Chris Watson introduces the first of five audio postcards, of spectacular natural events – beginning in the Kalahari Desert.

Recorded over hours, days, weeks or even months but compressed here into fifteen minutes.

Between November and February summer temperatures reach over 40 degrees centigrade. To avoid the dry, desiccating heat much of the wildlife has developed
nocturnal habits.

Chris wanted to capture the sounds of this extreme and ancient environment at a time when he could see very little, but could hear everything. This meant recording the sounds of the Kalahari Desert from dusk until dawn.

First we hear the sounds of the sand, as grains are driven up the sand dunes and over the summit by the scouring winds. As the afternoon passes, sidewinder snakes slither across the desert surface. Flash rainfalls create pools of water in the dry riverbed hollows which are exploited by flocks of Namaqua sandgrouse.

As the light fades there's a brief evening chorus of birdsong. After sunset, the dunes, grasses and thorn bushes are patrolled by an emerging alien empire; the insects, producing an astonishing wall of sound.

Baked hard by the sun, the red sand and soil of the Kalahari acts as a sounding board at night for the far carrying and chilling calls of brown hyenas, and before sunrise Chris records the powerful territorial calls of a desert lion which he can hear but cannot see.

Sunrise is rapid, accompanied by the displays of clapper larks, calling and beating their wings together. After sunrise, the temperature soars once again and the animals retreat leaving the voice of the prevailing winds as they scour across the Kalahari desert.

Producer: Sarah Blunt

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in March 2015.

2. St James' Park

Our urban parks and gardens create green lanes and oases of open spaces within our towns and cities.

They are also conduits for wildlife as well as for people.

St James' Park in Newcastle-upon-Tyne does have lush green turf but it is less of an oasis and more of a battlefield because since 1892 it has been the home of Newcastle United football club, and so regularly pounds with the clamour of human voices. At these times its anything but tranquil!

On the northern boundary is Leazes Park a formal Victorian park opened in 1873. In this programme, Chris was keen to record the changing soundscape across these two connected parks over the course of a single day, Match Day.

The recordings begin at 3am in the city centre as revellers start to leave the night clubs and make their way home; many of them crossing Leazes Park. A trail of food cartons provide rich pickings for mice which in turn are preyed upon by the park's tawny owls and foxes.

At 4am, a robin sings stimulated by the glow of the street light. The first light of the day brings joggers and then parents with children to the park, where their excited chatter mingles with the calls of mallards and coots on the lake.

Over the next few hours the park and city are transformed as fans gather for the match. Many arrive at Newcastle Central Station where their enthusiastic and almost deafening chants, are punctuated by the growls and barks of police dogs.

After the match, the fans disperse, and then the real magpies, return to the park to their night roost; their wild sounds filling the air.

Grammy Award-Winning songwriter Amy Wadge fell in love with the harmonica after winning one in a fancy dress competition (she was dressed in a bin liner!).

Here she investigates the history and potential of the diatonic instrument, a European the toy which in the hands of expert players became the the iconic sound of the Mississippi Delta and the Chicago Blues.

According to music historian Christoph Wagner, the very first example of the instrument goes back to Vienna. But millions would soon find their way to the USA, taken there by German emigres fleeing poverty. The poor person's introduction to music, the harmonica would soon find its way to around the globe, from Britain to Australia and even China.

But it was in America that it scored its biggest success. Joe Filisko reveals it was there that harmonica technique underwent a transformation. Instead of exhaling air, blues players would draw air in, and bend notes to achieve the characteristic sounds of the blues.

Amy tries her hand at bending, under the expert tutelage of Steve Lockwood - one of very few people to have studied the harmonica to degree level, and she speaks to one of Britain's best-known players, Paul Jones.

Canadian beat-boxer Benjamin Darvill - "Son of Dave" - has explored new possibilities with the instrument, and with an original sound that's been heard in edgy TV dramas and commercials.

Proving that for all its limitations - 10 holes and 3 octaves - there's life yet the harmonica.

Produced by Geoff Ballinger.

Series 2 - Episode 2

In the second of his two-part series Robin talks about appreciating art for how it makes us feel, he shares some stories about his favourite artists and celebrates the places that books and art can take us.

Escaping the confines of The Infinite Monkey Cage, comedian Robin Ince takes us on a journey through his Reality Tunnel in his second two-part stand-up series, recorded specially for Radio 4.

For over 30 years Robin Ince has been discharging fascinating thoughts, unusual knowledge, and infectious excitement into the universe. Over this time, these disparate, dusty specs of information have steadily clumped together and formed into an entity known as the 'Reality Tunnel'.

Previously, Robin's live appearances have only been visible to those astute enough to be tracking his trajectory; those with a keen enough eye to catch a fleeting glimpse of him as he twinkles through their orbit, emitting his ideas, shedding light on the human condition, before vanishing again into the distance. But now, using specialist recording tools and fancy editing, this phenomenon has been captured in high resolution audio for all to hear.

3. The Wash

The Wash is a large rectangular-shaped tidal estuary in East Anglia bordering Lincolnshire and Norfolk.

Wildlife sound recordist Chris Watson has long been fascinated by both the mystery of King John's treasure - which it's claimed was lost and buried in the mud here - and the wildlife of The Wash.

A strange and haunting habitat, it’s a no man's land where twice each day the tide sweeps in across the mud and drives tens of thousands of wading birds off their feeding grounds and onto a temporary roost by the shingle and gravel pits at the RSPB reserve at Snettisham in Norfolk.

It's a bewitching spectacle, especially on a spring tide. At low tide the birds disperse and only the feint roar of the distant sea can be heard across the vast expanses of exposed mud. Beneath the mud however there are the sounds of crustaceans and worms; a rich food supply and the reason why so many thousands of birds are attracted to The Wash.

As the tide turns, rivulets of water trickle across the mud. The tide gathers pace, and as it does it so, it forces the birds towards the shore and into the air. Huge flocks numbering hundreds then thousands of birds are pushed off the mud and onto the gravel pits.

When Chris visited, the birds were roosting well away from the water and in complete darkness. Yet soon after the tide turned and by some unknown signal the knots' chattering calls increased and then the leading edge of the flock suddenly took off, creating a huge wave of sound.

Within a few minutes quiet and calm was restored to the gravel pits.

For Chris, it's these wild sounds of the birds revealed as the tides ebb and flow which are the real hidden treasures of The Wash.

Here's Looking at You, Parents!

At home, surrounded by their own parenting paraphernalia, comedy couple Josie Long and Jonny Donahoe leap into the fictional and factual world of parenting to discover what lessons we can learn or lose from our TV and Radio counterparts.

Script writers from every generation have embraced parents, and the misadventures of mums and dads have kept TV and Radio in business for decades.

In the early days, it was all about showing us how it 'should' be done, but in recent years writers have reflected back to us what we’re really like! But as family set ups have evolved from mum and dad, to mum and mum, dad and dad or mums or dad, the writers have followed suit.

Parents have provided them with a seemingly endless source of material which in turn has provided us with ideas on better parenting or simply reassured us that we’re not the only ones doing it badly.

From 'Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em' to 'Motherland', sit back, relax and enjoy a journey of parenting mayhem and memories that will unite us all!

Featuring:

* TV writer and critic, Michael Hogan
* Jennifer Traig, author of Act Natural: A Cultural History of Misadventures in Parenting
* Dr Charlotte Faircloth, Lecturer in Sociology of Gender at UCL.

Producer: Nicola Humphries

4. Glacial Melt

Wildlife sound recordist Chris Watson first visited Antarctica in January 2010 and on his first morning, he was woken up by a howling blizzard.

It's the sound of arguably the most hostile environment on the planet. Whilst there, Chris was determined to record one of the greatest transitional events on the planet, the sounds of a glacier being transformed over the Antarctic summer from a solid mountain of freshwater ice into the salt water of the Ross Sea.

The place where he began recording was Cape Evans on Ross Island, by the hut 'Terra Nova' which was used by Captain Scott and his party during their ill-fated expedition to the South Pole in 1911.

The cinematographer Herbert Ponting who remained at Cape Evans later produced a film called ‘The Great White Silence. But this landscape is far from silent. West of 'Terra Nova', there is the Barne Glacier, a massive river of ice which flows down the slopes of Mount Erebus to the Ross Sea.

The recordings follow a journey beginnings inside the glacier with deep, powerful thumping sounds before it calves and huge blocks of ice crash onto the frozen sea. The sea ice buckles and cracks under the weight of these blocks producing extraordinary musical tones. Blocks of ice break off under pressure to form icebergs.

Then there's a gradual reduction as the sea ice undergoes its annual melt. Standing near a patch of open water Chris has an astonishing encounter with a minke whale which surfaces unexpectedly to breathe, and records Adelie penguins and the captivating scales of Weddell seals.

With the transformation complete, Chris watches and listens as Orcas break the surface of the waters to breathe in the air of the 'Great White Silence'.

5. Dawn Chorus

From late March until mid-June, between 3am and 6am, there is a tremendous outpouring of song in the Suffolk woodlands. Resident birds are joined by migrant birds from Africa and Eastern Europe whose voices coalesce into an international chorus which fills our woodlands well before sunrise.

Wildlife sound recordist Chris Watson decided to try and capture a dawn chorus in a landscape he knew well.

It was early May when he set out one evening down the old railway path which links Aldeburgh with Thorpeness. The first sounds he heard through the birch and alder trees, were not birds but the bells of Aldeburgh parish church nearly two miles to the south.

The bells faded under the sounds rooks, jackdaws and pheasants returning to their roosts. There then followed the sounds of the night; owls, deer and foxes.

At 2.30am Chris heard the first bird song, that of a nightingale, a beautiful solo voice in the darkness. Soon other birds joined the nightingale; robin, song thrush, blackbird and wren, until at 4am the chorus had developed to the extent that it was difficult to pick out any individual.

With the first rays of daylight, the chorus began to subside and the pattern of song was changed by the late arrivals. Chris returned back along the footpath, accompanied by the cries of curlew rising off the marshes and heading inland – a perfect end to a wonderful dawn chorus.

FRI 10:30 Shakespeare In... (b079rbcs)
South Africa

Writer Nadia Davids explores what Shakespeare means in pre and post apartheid South Africa.

Nadia Davids talks to a variety of South Africans including legendary actor John Kani and former political prisoner Eddie Daniels about what Shakespeare means in the country today.

She finds Shakespeare being performed as a way of discussing race, violence against women post Pistorius, and the current political crisis around President Zuma, but also that his presence in South Africa's cultural landscape is contested by some as part of the debate about decolonising education.

For others such as school pupils from a township outside Cape Town and for a group of homeless men in Johannesburg, Shakespeare offers an opportunity to grow and develop as well as reflect on their own lives.

Producer: Maggie Ayre

First broadcast on the BBC World Service in April 2016.

FRI 23:45 Irish Micks and Legends (b01nxw2q)
Series 1

Children of Lir

Aisling Bea and Yasmine Akram become Ais and Yaz and are the very best pals. They are taking their role as Ireland's freshest story-tellers to the British nation very seriously indeed but they haven't had the time to do much research, learn their lines or work out who is doing which parts.

The girls' unconventional way of telling stories involves a concoction of thoroughly inappropriate modern-day metaphors and references to many of the ancient Irish stories.

With a natural knack for both comedy and character voices Yasmine Akram and Aisling Bea will bring you warm, modern re-workings of popular ancient Irish stories.

Today it's Children of Lir.

Written and performed by Aisling Bea and Yasmine Akram.

Producer: Raymond Lau

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in November 2012.
