SAT 00:00 Soul Music (m0012fbs)
U2 - I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For

More gospel than rock, this 1987 hit has inspired great change in people's lives and created memories for music lovers across the world.

Brendan McManus was a corporate high flyer with an inexplicable sense that his life needed to change direction. This song was the tipping point that encouraged him to make a huge decision.

Raghav Prasad writes a music blog about the songs he grew up with as a young man in India. This track takes him back to the 'chummery' where he lived in Bombay (now Mumbai) when he was starting out on what became a globe-trotting career. This song reflects both his continued urge to travel but also how he regards his Hindu faith.

Neil Brand is a musician and broadcaster and a regular Soul Music contributor. He explains that the roots of this track are more gospel than rock.

Pauline Henry was the lead singer of The Chimes. Their version of this track, with Pauline's stirring vocals, not only changed her life but was said to be Bono's favourite interpretation of the song.

Rory Coleman is a world-class athlete and life coach who loves nothing more than to run for hundreds of miles across inhospitable terrain. However, in his 20s, his life was out of control. Something had to change and this song provided inspiration.

Gail Mullin, in Kansas City, describes how much her husband loved U2 and especially this track. Shortly before he died he received a personal letter from Bono explaining what motivated him to write this song.

Producer: Karen Gregor for BBC Audio in Bristol

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in December 2021.

SAT 00:30 Mel's Iron Age Holiday (b017mv1r)
Mel Giedroyc takes a British family back 2,000 years to live in a Danish Iron Age village at Sagnlandet Lejre.

Every summer ordinary families apply to live in the authentically reconstructed village for a week, to experience living as close to the Iron Age as possible.

This year one lucky British family has been accepted.

Mel joins them and immerses herself with glee: putting on the layers of hand-woven woollen garments and matching bonnet and settling down onto her sheepskins in her pitch-dark wattle-and-daub hut. It's hard and primitive living.

Days are occupied by gathering and preparing food as close to authentic Iron Age food as possible, grinding flour, fetching water, forging iron and chopping wood. Through the week, there are emotional highs and lows for all of them.

Then the week ends with a pagan ceremony at the Sacrificial Bog...

Producer: Beth O'Dea

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in November 2011.

SAT 07:30 Margaret Thatcher: Herself Alone (Omnibus) (m000945y)
How did Margaret Thatcher both change and divide Britain?

How did her model of combative female leadership help shape the way we live now?

How did the woman who won the Cold War and three general elections in succession find herself pushed out by her own MPs?

Charles Moore’s full account, based on unique access to Margaret Thatcher herself, her papers, and her closest associates, tells the story of her last period in office, her combative retirement, and the controversy that surrounded her even in death.

It includes the fall of the Berlin Wall, which she had fought for, and the rise of the modern EU that she feared. It lays bare her growing quarrels with colleagues and reveals the truth about her political assassination.

Moore’s three-part biography of one of Britain’s most important peacetime prime ministers paints an intimate political and personal portrait of the victories and defeats, and the iron will but surprising vulnerability of the woman who dominated in an age of male power.

SAT 10:00 Sisters in Satire: The Pioneering Women of Comedy (m000t5pc)
2. Meera and Linda

From the dawn of broadcast comedy, women played a vital but largely overlooked role; more in the background rather than the forefront.

What impact did the sisters of satire from the 60’s and 70’s have on the comedy we know today and what was their cultural influence?

Just because they weren’t the stars of the show didn’t mean their influence wasn’t felt. June Whitfield, Eleanor Bron and Miriam Margolyes were all quietly but firmly making their name in comedies such as The Glums, The Establishment Club and The Betty Witherspoon Show.

These women paved the way for comedians and actors such as Jan Ravens, Meera Syal and Linda Smith.

In the second of three programmes, Samira Ahmed is joined by actor/director Arabella Weir, former radio producer and novelist Lissa Evan and actress Tiffany Stevenson.

They discuss some of the best sitcoms from the BBC archives and listen again to the joys of:

WEEK ENDING
GOODNESS GRACIOUS ME
A BRIEF HISTORY OF TIME WASTING

They assess the impact these funny women have had on contemporary comedy and the extent of their satirical legacy.

Join them on a comic journey from the early 1970’s to the present day in a celebration of women in satire.

Gardeners

Monty Don

Gardener and broadcaster, Monty Don. is castaway by Sue Lawley.

In 2003, Monty became the nation's most high-profile gardener when he took over from Alan Titchmarsh as the lead presenter of Gardener's World. Entirely self-taught, he has been gardening since he was a child - but it was not until he was in his late 30s that his great passion become his vocation.

His first career ended disastrously; he and his wife Sarah set up a jewellery business together and during the 1980s they prospered; they had shops and offices in Knightsbridge and counted singers and film stars among their clients. But when the slump came they lost everything - the business, their jobs and their home.

Monty suffered years of depression that left him barely able to function. It was by chance that he was offered some stints presenting gardening slots on television. He never looked back - he says there hasn't been a day since when he's not been working and he's become a successful gardening columnist, broadcaster and author.

Waterton

Squire Waterton of Walton Hall was an eccentric Englishman and gentleman who made many visits to South America and wrote about his travels.

His travel books are "amongst the oddest I know" Sir David Attenborough tells us, written in an odd, almost biblical style. But nevertheless, they are accounts of natural history 200 years ago.

Attenborough argues that Waterton shouldn't be just remembered for his writing. He should be credited with establishing the first nature reserve in this country.

Appalled by the ravages of the industrial revolution's impact on the landscape, he built a wall around his estate to protect the wildlife - and free of charge allowed people to visit, which they did in their masses.

Written and presented by David Attenborough

In Pursuit of Edward Thomas

Poet Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's radio poetry archive and selects In Pursuit of Edward Thomas.

The poet Edward Thomas died at the Battle of Arras over 100 years ago on 9th April 1917.

He'd been a poet for little more than two years and his collected works amount to only a slim volume. Nevertheless he is regarded as among the greatest of English poets.

What made him so? Poet and editor, Matthew Hollis, follows a journey Thomas made by bike in the spring of 1913 from London into south west England.

It was a journey that produced a prose book for Thomas, In Pursuit of Spring, but it was also a journey that turned him towards poetry.

Producer: Tim Dee

SUN 07:30 Nancy: The Story of Lady Astor by Adrian Fort (Omnibus) (m001yyrr)
The fascinating story of Nancy Astor, the first woman elected to take a seat in the British Parliament.

Born in 1879, hers was a fascinating life.

From straitened beginnings in the Civil War-ravaged Deep South of America to marriage into one of the world's richest families.

She also ran a straight-talking campaign conducted door-to-door in one of the most deprived areas of Plymouth which brought her a political career that lasted more than two decades, from 1919 until 1945.

Far from being a hardened campaigner who had suffered for the cause of female suffrage, she was already near the centre of ruling society, having married one of the richest men in the world.

Thought not British, Nancy became a trailblazer and beacon for the generations of women who would follow her into Parliament.

Strength can look like a lot of things and comedienne Jessica Fostekew starts at the most dirty, functional end of things - strongwoman.

It's where weightlifting meets theatre. You might have seen on the telly at Christmas, the one with Geoff Capes running around with a fridge on his little finger or giving an entire train a tow with his body.

Jess talks to four-times Britain's Strongest Woman Andrea Thompson and multiple world-record holder Mayyah Blair to get their take on strength, aesthetic and why the strongest women in the world still have to work part-time.

And she tells us about the time she pulled an actual bus.

Lets face it, she goes on and on about it.

7. Mediterranean Challenges

Lord West travels to Malta to tell the story of the Royal Navy's incredibly difficult war in the Mediterranean between 1940 and 1945.

The Mediterranean war was the last time an Admiral commanded an entire theatre of war from the bridge of a ship. It produced some dramatic fleet successes and saw an assault on German supply convoys which helped win the war in North Africa against Rommel.

In the end, the Royal Navy prevailed, but with some of the most desperate fighting of the war, the victory came at a price.

THU 10:30 Ian Sansom and The Little People (b07vwfph)
There is, in many countries, a popular and ancient belief in little people. Or at least there is, in many countries, a popular and ancient belief that there was once a popular and ancient belief in little people.

Leprechauns, sprites, imps and elves...from Ireland to Iceland, Ian Sansom is seeking an encounter with the fabled, mysterious and diminutive other.

Irish Leprechauns are protected by European law. The Cooley Mountains in County Louth may be a 'Designated Area of Protection for Flora, Fauna, Wild Animals and Leprechauns' but Kevin Woods - aka Ireland's last leprechaun whisperer - is concerned there aren't many of them left. He's doing all he can to keep the traditional beliefs alive from his underground cavern on the Irish border.

Iceland may be best known for bubbling blue thermal pools and world-class part-time footballers. But it's also a magical kingdom where everyone believes in elves and even roads in Iceland are specially designed to avoid the cliffs and rock formations where they live. Ian enrols in Elf School on the outskirts of Reykjavik, where he learns how 13 different species of elves continue to peacefully co-exist with the local population.

A belief in little people may represent the folkloric survival of a belief in ancient deities, it may represent an attempt to understand that which is inside us, or it may simply be a sign of human gullibility...but as Ian discovers - if you don't believe in them, they'll never visit you.

Produced by Conor Garrett.

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in September 2016.

FRI 15:00 Christopher Green - Like an Angel Passing through My Room (b00yj97j)
At a party Christopher Green meets Anni-Frid Lyngstad - aka Frida from Abba. He is the after-dinner entertainment. She is a party guest. What starts as a 'I'm your biggest fan' turns into a long chat about the nature of loving someone you've never met. From Olivier award-winning writer Christopher Green.

This is a project several years in the making; what started as an upbeat reflection on fame and the notion of being a fan, developed into a meditation on the communication between two people and coping with the blows life deals. Green's partner died shortly after recording the interview with Frida, in which they talked about her long recovery from the death of her husband in 1999. This play takes in life and death, and some of the territory in between, with a heavy emphasis on pop music.

Episode 7

FRI 23:15 Heidi Regan: No Worries (m000xm7z)
Episode 2

As someone who tends to worry in 'normal' times, the pandemic of course offered some exciting new areas of exploration for the anxious mind.

Having a partner who is a GP has both helped and not helped Heidi with that: worrying about her being safe, but also, yay, on tap medical advice!

That said, examining rashes of a loved one over dinner isn’t really the romance her partner signed up for.

As Heidi and her partner ponder some of the big questions in life, Heidi's brain resorts, as it always does, to distracting them (and the audience) with increasingly silly jokes as she makes an argument for the pros and cons of joking your way through life.

In this episode she realises that repressing worries could actually lead to them bubbling up uninvited.

Written and performed by Heidi Regan.

With thanks to Nick Elleray

Produced by Julia McKenzie.

A BBC Studios Production for BBC Radio 4, first broadcast in 2021.

FRI 23:30 Bird Island (b01k2b18)
Series 1

Episode 3

Ben is on the trip of a lifetime to Sub-Antarctica.

Yet he's trapped in an icy hell with one other person, a dodgy internet connection and a Dictaphone.

Fellow travelling scientist Graham is also a nerd, so he's not much help in alleviating the loneliness. No wonder they both fail to share all the highs and lows of exploring this beautiful, but lonely landscape.

So, Ben tries to socially adapt to his loneliness by keeping a cheery audio diary.

In this episode, Ben and Graham encounter a seal cub that's been attacked. He takes it home and carefully nurses it back to life and share the pup's progress with his mum and dad.

Ben ...... Reece Shearsmith
Graham ...... Julian Rhind-Tutt
Beverley ...... Alison Steadman
Robin ...... Gerard Mcdermott

Producer: Tilusha Ghelani.
