SAT 00:30 Kevin Bacon's Game of Fame (b085h73f)
At the age of 26, actor Kevin Bacon rocketed to stardom.

This was followed by a long slow steady decline and a string of box office flops.

By the time Kevin reached 30, he suffered terrible anxiety and hit rock bottom.

Around this time three college students created the game Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon which asserts that the Hollywood star can be connected to any celebrity in six or less steps.

Kevin admits that he was initially horrified by it and thought it was a joke at his expense.

But as the concept hung around he realised that it wasn't going away.

So he decided to embrace it and start his foundation the Sixdegrees.org, which tries to arrange celebrity drop-ins to charity events to bolster the efforts of people who run them and give them exposure on social media.

The Six Degrees Game put him at the centre of the Hollywood Universe but is that really a position he deserves?

Rajesh Mirchandani joins Kevin as he visits a charity event.

Here he gives an interesting insight into his own philosophy and first-hand experience of fame - having won it lost and claimed it back to some degree.

Produced by Kate Bissell.

SAT 10:00 Sisters in Satire: The Pioneering Women of Comedy (m000szng)
1. June, Betty and Victoria

From the dawn of broadcast comedy, women played a vital but largely overlooked role; more in the background rather than the forefront.

What impact did the sisters of satire from the 60’s and 70’s have on the comedy we know today and what was their cultural influence?

Just because they weren’t the stars of the show didn’t mean their influence wasn’t felt.

June Whitfield, Eleanor Bron and Miriam Margolyes were all quietly but firmly making their name in comedies such as The Glums, The Establishment Club and The Betty Witherspoon Show.

These women paved the way for comedians and actors such as Jan Ravens, Meera Syal and Linda Smith.

In the first of three programmes, Samira Ahmed is joined by actor/director Arabella Weir and former radio producer and novelist Lissa Evans.

They listen into some of the best sitcoms from the archives - and discuss the impact their funny women have had on contemporary comedy and the extent of their satirical legacy: :

Racing Castaways

Clare Balding

Sporting broadcaster Clare Balding is castaway by Kirsty Young.

BBC TV's coverage of London's 2012 Olympics was her triumph and much like Team GB she'd been in training for her big moment for quite a while.

Clare has worked on five Olympic Games, four Paralympics, three Winter Olympics and a great deal of horse racing.

It's on the turf that's she's most at home - her father was a champion racehorse trainer and for a number of years she herself was a leading amateur flat jockey.

The first pony she ever rode, as a toddler, was a gift from the Queen; she went to public school and Cambridge but her life hasn't been an entirely easy ride. She has coped with thyroid cancer, being forcibly "outed" by the tabloid press and in her own words being "a disappointment from the moment" she was born.

She says, "This may sound nauseating but I'm a very happy person. I love my work, I love my life and I'm told by those who know and love me that it's a bit like living with Tigger".

MON 08:30 Nancy: The Story of Lady Astor by Adrian Fort (b01n9wzp)
1. The Virginian

Nancy Astor was the first woman to take a seat in the British Parliament.

Born in 1879, hers was a fascinating life: from straitened beginnings in the Civil War-ravaged Deep South of America, to marriage into one of the world's richest families.

A straight-talking campaign conducted door-to-door in one of the most deprived areas of Plymouth, brought her a political career lasting over two decades from 1919 to 1945.

Far from being a hardened campaigner who had suffered for the cause of female suffrage, she was already near the centre of ruling society, having married one of the richest men in the world.

She was not even British, yet she became a trailblazer and beacon for the generations of women who would follow her into Parliament.

Adrian Fort's biography abridged in five parts by Alison Joseph.

Read by Anna Maxwell Martin.

Producer: Kirsteen Cameron.

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in October 2012.

1. New Century

Admiral Lord West tells the story of the Royal Navy during the 20th century, when through political, social, technological and economic turmoil, the Navy's fortunes mirrored those of Britain.

Lord West begins on the beaches of northern France, introducing the series through the greatest amphibious assault in history - D-Day, a turning point in naval warfare.

From there, he goes back in history to discuss 'navalism' at the start of the 20th century.

The Navy in the decade before the First World War was vast, a truly globalised organisation, defending British interests around the world. At home it was the bulwark against invasion and had such a powerful hold on the British imagination that images of sailors - of Jack Tar - sold everything from cigarettes to postcards.

And it was a powerful political force too, with crowds following naval developments closely and, when the pace of warship production seemed to be slackening, demanding more. This was an era when political meetings were interrupted with chants of 'Dreadnought! Dreadnought! Dreadnought!'

But for all its size and strength, the Royal Navy at the dawn of the 20th century had rot at its core - social stagnation and a rules-based mentality were stifling the fighting spirit that had characterised Nelson's navy.

Reform would come only with two titans of the era - Winston Churchill and, first, Admiral 'Jacky' Fisher.

MON 23:30 Susan Calman - Keep Calman Carry On (b0717j1y)
Series 1

Cricket with Andy Zaltzman

Susan Calman is the least relaxed person she knows.

She has no down time, no hobbies (unless you count dressing up your cats in silly outfits) and her idea of relaxation is to play Grand Theft Auto, an hour into which she is in a murderous rage with sky high blood pressure.

Her wife had to threaten to divorce her to make her go on holiday last year. Her first for four years. But she's been told by the same long-suffering wife, that unless she finds a way to switch off, and soon, she's going to be unbearable.

So Susan is looking at her options to try and immerse herself in the pursuits that her friends find relaxing, to find her inner zen and outer tranquillity. Can she ditch the old Susan Calman and attempt to find the new Susan Calm?

This time, in a typically British leisure pursuit; Susan goes to a cricket match with comedian and author, Andy Zaltzman.

Keep Calman Carry On is an audience stand up show in which Susan reports on how successful she's been - both at relaxing and at the pursuit itself - as well as playing in and discussing a handful of illustrative clips from her efforts.

It's an attempt to find out how people find solace or sanctuary in these worlds and how Susan can negotiate her own place in them.

Producer: Lyndsay Fenner.

2. New Technology

Lord West looks at how a revolution in naval technology transformed ideas of warfare, contributed to the arms race and laid the foundations for victory in the First World War.

During the early years of the twentieth century, one man dominated the Royal Navy. Admiral Sir 'Jacky' Fisher revitalised the Mediterranean fleet, pressed for social reform and promoted the introduction of torpedoes and submarines.

And in 1904 Fisher finally achieved a lifelong ambition, becoming First Sea Lord and professional head of the Royal Navy. Now he was able to develop new technology even faster. His crowning achievement was HMS Dreadnought, a battleship so powerful that it effectively made every other warship in every other navy redundant.

With Britain's navy pre-eminent, to level the playing field like this was dangerous. And it was to play a part in the pre-war arms race, but Britain's victory in that arms race would also make possible victory in the war which followed.

Lord West discusses Fisher's contributions, not least to the history of world oil. For it was he who persuaded a young Winston Churchill to convert the Royal Navy to oil power - altering the arc of history in South Wales, whose coal industry went into decline; in the Middle East; and around the world.

TUE 10:30 Country Down Under (b085851g)
Country music is commonly associated with downtrodden, lovelorn, white inhabitants of America’s rural south - but it has also long been a significant form of expression for Australia’s Aboriginal peoples.

Country music became popular Down Under during the first half of the 20th Century. Thanks to gramophone recordings, wind-up radios and touring bands, it even reached the bush where most Aboriginals lived, often more or less imprisoned on missions and government-controlled reserves. At a time when their own cultural heritage was being systematically erased, country music became a medium through which they could maintain their practice of sharing stories via the oral tradition.

Its resonance was enhanced by melodies which tended towards the melancholic. As one musician put it “country music was all about loss, and we’d lost everything”.

Through country music, Aboriginal people were able to give voice to their personal experiences and ongoing struggles for justice. For example, songs describe the stealing of babies and land, incidents of racism, poor living conditions and high levels of incarceration.

And so country music, far from its origins, has become a deeply moving and powerfully activist Aboriginal art form. With contributions from Auriel Andrew, Kev Carmody, Roger Knox, Sue Ray and Glenn Skuthorpe. And dedicated to the memory of Auriel Andrew.

3. War Begins

Lord West looks at the Royal Navy's strategy for winning the First World War, and how in the early years of the war it failed to bring its might to bear.

The First World War represented a major change in British strategy towards wars on the European continent. Historically Britain had stood off from continental conflicts, funding armies there but otherwise letting the Royal Navy exert its power at sea.

But now with British and imperial armies fighting across Europe, the Royal Navy was reduced to transporting troops, escorting convoys and, with the exception of some small victories mopping up German commerce raiders around the world, an inglorious policy of distant blockade.

While the Grand Fleet was kept in Scapa Flow in the Orkney Islands, the only real attempt to fundamentally alter the balance of power was opposed by many in the Navy, went down in history as a catastrophic failure, and remains to this day one of the war's great 'what ifs'.

4. The Navy Wins

Lord West looks at how the Royal Navy won the First World War.

The Royal Navy's role in winning the conflict has often been overlooked - drowned out by the new and savage reality of industrial warfare on the western front, and the tragic romance of the imagery and war poetry which surrounded it.

Yet the Navy's role should not be underestimated, and in this programme Lord West looks at the greatest naval battle of the war - Jutland - and its dramatic impact on the war.

Jutland was a great strategic victory for the Royal Navy, but largely because of truly terrible PR afterwards, many to this day regard it as a defeat. It was part of the reason for the growing disconnect between the nation and its navy.

Yet the outcome of Jutland influenced more than just public sentiment. It forced the German military to confront the reality of their situation: that the Royal Navy's blockade could not be broken by their own fleet, and would in time strangle Germany into submission.

The result was unrestricted submarine warfare: Germany's only chance of victory, but itself carrying the risk of bringing the United States of America into the war on the Allied side.

When the United States did join the war, troops poured into Europe, but the most significant impact was on that three year old blockade, tightening it to a point that strangled Germany and won the war for the Allies.

As the blondest bombshell of them all and one of Hollywood's most outrageously camp icons, Mae West was certainly never ignored during a career spanning almost seven decades. As a novelist, playwright, businesswoman, producer and performer she always attracted scandal, controversy and men.

Writer Kathy Lette proposes Mae West for great-life status and discusses the 'queen of the quip' with Francine Stock. Providing expert analysis is Mae West biography Simon Louvish.

THU 10:30 Viz: An Unfeasibly Large Success (b07g8psz)
Is Viz profane rubbish or a bold rebellion?

Nick Baker charts its controversial explosion from gutter rag fanzine to national success. Does humour have lines that can’t be crossed?

Viz was born in a Newcastle bedroom during the Thatcher years. The profanity-laced and flatulence-filled comic took Britain by storm with its taboo-shattering humour. While its blatant disregard for political correctness turned many away in disgust, its gasp-inducing gags made it one of Britain’s best-selling magazines. Nick Baker traces the comic back to its Geordie genesis to ask how something so shockingly vulgar ended up under the mattresses of countless teens and under the eyes of business men pretending to read the Financial Times.

Nick’s journey begins in Tyneside with the creators of Viz. Brothers Chris and Simon Donald and best friend Jim Brownlow.

With the equally loved and hated Fat Slags, Sid the Sexist and Johnny Fartpants by his side, Nick tours the Newcastle underground that served as an incubator for Viz. The naughty and risqué content spread like wildfire in the punk scene. Soon each issue of the DIY magazine was consistently selling over a million copies.

As Nick tries to understand this rollercoaster success, he secures exclusive interviews with Viz legends Roger Mellie the Man on the Tellie and Billy the Fish, voiced by Harry Enfield.

Viz’s outrageous satire got them in trouble with everyone from the United Nations to Scotland Yard. Accusations of racism, sexism, and insensitivity were part of the daily routine at the office. Comedians Richard Herring, Alex Lowe, Lucy Porter and Frank Skinner debate whether these boundaries should exist in the first place.

Today, sales of Viz have declined dramatically. Nick discusses its place in the pantheon of British comedy with current editors Graham Dury and Simon Thorp.

THU 15:00 Burning Both Ends: When Oliver Reed Met Keith Moon (b017x3pl)
The story of one of the most infamous, unexpected and touching of friendships between two ‘70s icons, Oliver Reed and Keith Moon.

Starring Sean Pertwee as Oliver Reed, and Arthur Darvill as Keith Moon.

Oliver Reed …. Sean Pertwee
Keith Moon …. Arthur Darvill
Burt …. Matthew Gravelle
Receptionist …. Claire Cage
Nick …. Richard Nichols
Fisherman’s Daughter …. Bethan Walker

In the mid-1970s, Oliver was an international movie star, and drummer Keith was a rock 'n' roll legend, as the drummer with The Who. Both were famous for their partying and boozing, as well as their undeniable talents. Mercurial and unpredictable, both men were at the top of their game - but the top can be a very lonely place.

Then they met, on the film set of The Who's epic rock opera, Tommy. What followed was a revelation - in each other they found a true kindred spirit, their own shadow image.

This is a story of madness and mayhem, antics and adventures, but also of love and loss - the dangerous, dazzling brilliance of two unbridled spirits connecting, but then the huge pain when one of them dies prematurely.

Recounting the electrifying bromance between these two iconic figures, ‘Burning Both Ends’ is the story of two men who found in each other a true friend, and who loved each other as fiercely as they partied.

Written by Matthew Broughton - inspired by true events, but scenes and characters have been created for dramatic effect.

Director: Sam Hoyle.

Love, Death and A Box of Chocolates

Ashley shares her atypical account of amore - cringeworthy childhood crushes, hugging machines, and why love actually is a load of mince.

And in the final chapter of her story, Ashley’s mum is dying, and she’s not doing it nearly as gracefully as Susan Sarandon has led us to believe it should be done. In trying to make sense of it all, Ashley explains how death was dealt with during her unconventional upbringing - featuring funeral karaoke and family feuds - getting side-tracked by grave robbers, 80s ghosts… and Forrest Gump.

Poignant and personal, this might also be the episode to convince Ashley that exploring your trauma in a fringe show isn’t a suitable substitute for actual therapy…

5. Inter-War Trouble

Lord West explores the Royal Navy's three battles between the wars: with a new department in Whitehall, with communists in Russia, and with the Navy's oldest foe - the Treasury.

The First World War left Britain reeling, economically devastated and with massive social dislocation and a generation scarred, both physically and psychologically, by the conflict. The country was on the back foot, and the Royal Navy was, too.

The Navy's formidable new capability - its air arm - was taken away and handed to the newly-formed RAF. Constant raids by the Treasury were initially rebuffed, but eventually took their toll. And a perception grew up that the pre-war arms race had caused the war, and that the Navy had caused the arms race, and there was little outrage when the size of the navy was fixed.
But alongside these battles in Whitehall, in international negotiations, and for the hearts and minds of the British public, the Navy also had a proper war to fight.

For almost a year after the end of the First World War, the Navy - together with other British and allied troops - fought a war in Russia against the 'Red Army' of the nascent Soviet Union. Largely forgotten today because the exhausted troops were eventually withdrawn, the war nevertheless gave Estonia its first taste of independence.

U2 - I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For

More gospel than rock, this 1987 hit has inspired great change in people's lives and created memories for music lovers across the world.

Brendan McManus was a corporate high flyer with an inexplicable sense that his life needed to change direction. This song was the tipping point that encouraged him to make a huge decision.

Raghav Prasad writes a music blog about the songs he grew up with as a young man in India. This track takes him back to the 'chummery' where he lived in Bombay (now Mumbai) when he was starting out on what became a globe-trotting career. This song reflects both his continued urge to travel but also how he regards his Hindu faith.

Neil Brand is a musician and broadcaster and a regular Soul Music contributor. He explains that the roots of this track are more gospel than rock.

Pauline Henry was the lead singer of The Chimes. Their version of this track, with Pauline's stirring vocals, not only changed her life but was said to be Bono's favourite interpretation of the song.

Rory Coleman is a world-class athlete and life coach who loves nothing more than to run for hundreds of miles across inhospitable terrain. However, in his 20s, his life was out of control. Something had to change and this song provided inspiration.

Gail Mullin, in Kansas City, describes how much her husband loved U2 and especially this track. Shortly before he died he received a personal letter from Bono explaining what motivated him to write this song.

FRI 10:30 Mel's Iron Age Holiday (b017mv1r)
Mel Giedroyc takes a British family back 2,000 years to live in a Danish Iron Age village at Sagnlandet Lejre.

Every summer ordinary families apply to live in the authentically reconstructed village for a week, to experience living as close to the Iron Age as possible. This year one lucky British family has been accepted.

Mel Giedroyc joins them and immerses herself with glee: putting on the layers of hand-woven woollen garments and matching bonnet and settling down onto her sheepskins in her pitch-dark wattle-and-daub hut. It's hard and primitive living. Days are occupied by gathering and preparing food as close to authentic Iron Age food as possible, grinding flour, fetching water, forging iron and chopping wood. Through the week, there are emotional highs and lows for all of them.

Then the week ends with a pagan ceremony at the Sacrificial Bog...

FRI 23:30 Bird Island (b01jxslg)
Series 1

Episode 2

Ben is on the trip of a lifetime to Sub-Antarctica.

Yet he's trapped in an icy hell with one other person, a dodgy internet connection and a Dictaphone.

Fellow travelling scientist Graham is also a nerd, so he's not much help in alleviating the loneliness. No wonder they both fail to share all the highs and lows of exploring this beautiful, but lonely landscape.

So, Ben tries to socially adapt to his loneliness by keeping a cheery audio diary.

In this episode, Ben and Graham are short on food supplies and can't radio main base.

Tensions rise as they are forced to survive on porridge.

Written by Katy Wix

Producer: Tilusha Ghelani

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in June 2012.

She sings her version of Waltzing Matilda on a local breakfast TV show and parties at a redneck bar.

Written and performed by Christopher Green

Director Claire Grove
