SAT 01:00 Anita Sullivan - Titanium (b01061ht)
History rarely remembers who came second.

If Yuri Gagarin had so much as sneezed on the 12th of April 1961, the honour of being the first man in orbit would have gone to his training partner, Gherman Titov.

But Gagarin didn't sneeze and a disappointed Titov had to climb back down the launch tower.

A few months later Titov did launch successfully in Vostock II. He completed 17 earth orbits (got space-sick, ate and slept) and is still the youngest person ever to have gone into space. But he's largely unheard of because he wasn't 'first.

This is the story of the two cosmonauts - their training, their selection, the flight and its aftermath - told through Titov's eyes as he waits at Chkalovsky Airbase for Yuri to return from what should have been a routine training flight on the 27th March 1968.

Drama written by Anita Sullivan - originally broadcast to mark the 50th anniversary of Gagarin's flight,

But her mother's shadow was long and often controlling - Deborah was not always mothered well.

In her powerful and poignant memoir, she explores the effects of her strict parenting and her own strong desire for independence and autonomy which led her to flee her roots, first to St Andrews University, with mixed results, and then to her hugely successful career as a journalist and writer in London.

Deborah also paints a vivid portrait of the place and the community around the steel works of Ravenscraig - the hub of her world in the sixties and seventies.

Bill Bailey

Comedian, actor and musician, Bill Bailey is castaway by Kirsty Young.

Lauded for his hugely inventive stand up, Bill has carved out a highly successful career with an altogether atypical approach. He's a familiar face on TV from his regular appearances on quiz shows Have I Got News for You, QI and Never Mind the Buzzcocks.

At school he was a gifted pupil who gave up on his education and a pitch-perfect piano student who flunked his music school entrance. He started drifting as a teenager and gave up on university within days of arrival - he says he was looking for the next challenge, and that turned out to be stand-up comedy.

He loved having to think on his feet and found the laughter of strangers intoxicating.

1. Janice's Choice

Harry is stuck in a rut again, with a dead-end job and a dying marriage, a son he can't understand and a dying mother.

Then Janice makes a choice that shakes him out of it.

John Updike's masterful Rabbit quintet established Harry "Rabbit" Angstrom as the quintessential American White middle class male.

The first book Rabbit, Run was published in 1960 to critical acclaim.

Rabbit Redux is the second in the series, published in 1971 and charting the end of the 1960s - featuring, among other things, the first American moon landing and the Vietnam War.

Despite its very strong language, sex, and reflection of racist attitudes of the time, Time Magazine said of the book and its author, "Updike owns a rare verbal genius, a gifted intelligence and a sense of tragedy made bearable by wit. A masterpiece."

It's extraordinary how many of its themes reverberate down to the present day.

3. Metropolis

Paul Morley explores a history of popular music through some of the iconic recording studios in which classic albums were created.

Without recording studios, music as we know it would simply not exist. They play a crucial role in the structure and fabric of the music recorded there - the sounds moulded by the studio space itself.

In this edition, Paul ventures to the Metropolis Studios in West London, one of the last major studio complexes to be built during the heyday of the music industry. But without an exalted musical history to fall back on and decades of experience to help run it, how do you go about creating a world-class facility frequented by the likes of Amy Winehouse, Mick Jagger and Rhianna?

Producer: Paul Kobrak

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2012.

TUE 21:30 Rabbit Redux by John Updike (b09gygk6)
2. Reluctance

As American astronauts approach the Moon's surface, Harry and Janice prepare to unearth the truth about their broken marriage, and admit their reluctance to mend it.

John Updike's masterful Rabbit quintet established Harry "Rabbit" Angstrom as the quintessential American White middle class male.

The first book Rabbit, Run was published in 1960 to critical acclaim. Rabbit Redux is the second in the series, published in 1971 and charting the end of the sixties - featuring, among other things, the first American moon landing and the Vietnam War.

1. Not Dead Yet

Despite her diagnosis of terminal cancer in 2021, Janey’s defiantly not dead yet, and is as hilarious as ever, even in the face of online haters who seem to think she’s not dying quickly enough.

In this mix of stand-up and chat, Janey and her daughter and fellow comedian Ashley talk about why having cancer is like having an extramarital affair and what it’s like to be told you’re dying, and she takes to the stage to tell tales of loudmouths in hospital wards and the unlikely benefits of chemotherapy!

Janey shared her extraordinary life story in the first series - exposing all the abuse, poverty, and trauma she’d experienced in her trademark darkly comic style.

Now, with death chasing her down like a runaway bus, she’s still compelled to get up onstage and fearlessly poke fun at every escapade, encounter and event she’s experienced on her own journey with cancer, and make sure she goes out in the same way she’s lived - with nothing left unsaid.

Recorded live in front of an audience in her hometown, Glasgow.

American Beauty

Paul Gambaccini explores a Best Picture Oscar film to find out how and why it won and what it tells us about society at the time.

The black comedy American Beauty swept the board at the 2000 Oscars ceremony, pushing aside The Sixth Sense and The Green Mile. It was an unexpected hit for the studio - Steven Spielberg's Dreamworks - and went on to become a popular, critical and commercial success around the world.

Telling a story of dysfunction in suburbia, it tackled many taboo themes head on: homophobia, drugs, blackmail, infidelity and domestic abuse. Kevin Spacey won an Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal of Lester Burnham, the suburban husband and father who embraces his midlife crisis. Annette Bening, who plays his wife, holds onto the facades that make up her world, whilst falling apart inside.

For the director, Sam Mendes, it was his first movie and he picked up an Oscar. Paul talks to Mendes about his vision and the evolution of American Beauty on and off set and reflects on the cultural event it soon became. Producers Dan Jinks and Bruce Cohen, talk about casting the movie and getting it made. Thomas Newman, of the Hollywood composing dynasty, wrote the score and tells Paul how close to the wire the iconic opening music sequence was. And the young actors in the film - Thora Birch and Wes Bentley - discuss how, at the start of their careers, they immersed themselves in roles which resonated with their lives at the time.

Producer Neil McCarthy

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in February 2013.

Jazz Emu: The Sound of Us

3. The Sound of Man

After being diagnosed with below average testosterone levels (which was probably the error of the thicko lady doctor) Jazz decides to assert his dominance. With the help of the macho social media influencer Aidan Tugg, Jazz learns the art of being a Proper Man. No cucks allowed.

Jazz Emu: musician, 70s lothario-type, ex-Hollywood foley artist and internationally renowned idiot. After a long career in (and often out) of the spotlight, he has decided to present a radio show in order to connect with the average Joes (and Janes, and other boring names) and bestow his expert knowledge of Sound upon the universe.
