SAT 03:00 Letters From Tove by Tove Jansson (m000c8qf)
Episode 5

Out of the thousands of letters Moomin creator Tove Jansson wrote, a cache remains that she addressed to her family, her dearest confidantes, and her lovers, both male and female.

Into these, she spilled her innermost thoughts, defended her ideals and revealed her heart. To read these letters is both an act of startling intimacy and a rare privilege.

Penned with grace and humour, Letters from Tove offers an almost seamless commentary on Tove Jansson's life as it unfolds within Helsinki's bohemian circles and her island home. Spanning fifty years between her art studies and the height of Moomin fame, we hear the bleakness of war, the hopes for love that were dashed and renewed, and her determined attempts to establish herself as an artist.

SAT 10:30 When Cassius Met The Beatles (b00r8b1k)
The tale of an unexpected encounter between 20th century legends - a meeting which created a new template for global celebrity.

February 1964: The Beatles fly into Miami, sparking Beatlemania as they prepare to perform on The Ed Sullivan Show.

Meanwhile in a low-rent Miami gym, the underdog Cassius Clay trains to fight reigning champion Sonny Liston for the world title. The pundits say Clay hasn't a hope. Quite unexpectedly, the paths of these legendary figures cross.

British photographer Harry Benson arranges for The Beatles to visit Cassius Clay in the gym. Clay picks up Ringo and swings him around the ring as if he's no heavier than a toddler, as the other band-members lie at his feet. Clay pretends to knock all four Beatles down with a single punch. The resulting images remain in the memory long after this brief encounter.

The Beatles triumph on TV. Cassius Clay amazes all the boxing writers by defeating Liston.

They suddenly both find themselves on the cusp of a new kind of stardom - they're young, outspoken and able to capture the global imagination.

John Wilson reports from Miami on the background to this unique encounter.

With the memories of three people who were there at the time: photographer Harry Benson, who was travelling with the Beatles, writer Robert Lipsyte, who was covering the fight for the New York Times as a rookie reporter, and fight doctor Ferdie Pacheco, then working at the gym in Miami.

All witnessed the moment when Cassius met The Beatles.

John also taps the memories of Paul McCartney.

SUN 06:00 Poetry Extra (m001wj7v)
A Portrait Of… Lemn Sissay

Poet Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's poetry archive and chooses A Portrait Of...Lemn Sissay.

In many ways a portrait painter is like a detective – looking for clues below the surface to capture the sitter’s true likeness. In this programme we follow artist Fiona Graham-Mackay and her subject – the poet and playwright Lemn Sissay – through this sometimes emotional process.

"I feel like you've gone into me and looked out from behind my eyes."

Lemn Sissay MBE was an official poet for the London Olympics and his Landmark Poems are installed throughout Manchester and London. Born to Ethiopian parents, he was raised in Lancashire by strongly religious foster parents who, having had biological children of their own, put him into care aged 12. They told him neither they, nor any of their family, would contact him again.

On leaving care at 17, he self-published his first book of poetry while on the dole. Much of his work tells the story of his upbringing and search for his birth parents.

Fiona Graham-Mackay has painted hundreds of portraits, including Seamus Heaney and Sir Andrew Motion. "It's in the space between sentences that people reveal themselves," she says.

Recorded in Lemn’s home and at the Foundling Museum in London, where Lemn is a fellow, the programme follows the portrait taking shape. It’s an intimate experience, peeling away the layers to capture the essence of the sitter as seen through the artist’s eye. And in this, conversations meander in unexpected places.

Features a reading of "Suitcases and Muddy Parks" from Rebel Without Applause by Lemn Sissay, published by Canongate.

Producer: Eve Streeter

A Pier production for BBC Radio 4, first broadcast in 2016.

Skin Tight Genes

True stories told live in the USA: Catherine Burns introduces stories from the double helix – tales featuring DNA inheritance.

The Moth is an acclaimed not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the art and craft of storytelling based in the USA. Since 1997, it has celebrated both the raconteur and the storytelling novice, who has lived through something extraordinary and yearns to share it. Originally formed by the writer George Dawes Green as an intimate gathering of friends on a porch in Georgia (where moths would flutter in through a hole in the screen), and then recreated in a New York City living room, The Moth quickly grew to produce immensely popular events at theatres and clubs around New York City and later around the USA, the UK and other parts of the world.

The Moth has presented more than 15,000 stories, told live and without notes, to standing-room-only crowds worldwide. The Moth podcast is downloaded over 27 million times a year.

Featuring true stories told live on stage without scripts, from the humorous to the heart-breaking.

The Moth Radio Hour is produced by Jay Allison and Atlantic Public Media in Woods Hole, Massachusetts and is distributed by the Public Radio Exchange.

First heard on PRX in April 2020.

MON 21:30 Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury (m001ws4c)
Episode 6

Montag has quit his job as fireman, burning books for a living.

He has a copy of the Bible, maybe the last one in existence, and he can't burn it.

He can't talk to his wife. His only hope is Faber, a retired English professor.

Fahrenheit 451 is the temperature at which paper burns.

It's Guy Montag's job to know these things: he's a fireman and he has burned books all his life. He used to love his job, doing this service for the public, but he can't do it anymore.

As his life unravels he begins to question all his beliefs.

Ray Bradbury's cult classic was first published in 1953 but it imagines a world very like today, in which sophisticated mass media are used to pacify and control people; love is a commodity; attention spans are short and police hunts are live entertainment.

Poetic, dazzling and shocking: Bradbury's vision of the future has become terrifyingly familiar.

Abridged in ten parts by Sara Davies.

TUE 07:30 The Cold Swedish Winter (b093hdkw)
Series 3

4. The Latte Pappas

Geoff negotiates the generous Swedish parental benefits system, the rewards - and otherwise - of dealing with a marauding toddler, and the terrifying perfectionism of his fellow Swedish dads.

The third series of Danny Robins' sitcom, set and recorded in Sweden.

Starring Edinburgh Comedy Award-winner Adam Riches, Danny Robins and a cast of Sweden's most popular TV comedy actors.

It's three years since Geoff moved to the tiny north Swedish town of Yxsjö with his girlfriend Linda. It has been quite a culture shock and they've been through a lot in three years - rotting herring, moose and bears, battles with language, perfect ex-boyfriends and ice hockey, the birth of a son, a marriage proposal and a runaway hot air balloon.

This year promises much as Geoff's mother-in-law Gunilla teaches him Swedish and his father-in-law Sten tries to make a Swedish man of him - in an entirely non-sexist way. Geoff and Linda start to plan their wedding with the questionable help of fellow ex-pat divorcee Ian, Linda's brother, depressive Goth Anders and fellow immigrant, Kurdish Dane, Soran.

American science journalist Joshua Foer was a perfectly normal guy with a perfectly normal memory. Then he entered the USA National Memory Championships - and ended up giving the country’s brain power prodigies a run for their money.

How did he do it?

Matthew Syed takes a deep dive into the heady world of brain training - where ordinary people challenge themselves to reach new peaks of mental athleticism. Journeying from the methods of the Ancient Greeks, to the showbiz hacks of the 1960s, to the Manhattan competition hall where Joshua competed for the title of memory champion in 2006, Matthew learns that the desire to push the limits of our cognitive capacity has been around for thousands of years.

But do these techniques work? In his effort to understand what’s possible when it comes to improving our minds and memories, Matthew examines the impact of nature and nurture on our brains - asking whether environmental inequality, or genetics, is the deciding factor in determining whether anyone could become a mental athlete.

FRI 20:00 Playing the Salesman (b0076wzk)
Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman is a great tragedy of an ordinary man, and all over the world people identify with Willy Loman. The play was first performed 75 years ago, on 10th February, 1949. Arthur Miller also died on 10th February, in 2005. To mark this Radio 4 is repeating Playing the Salesman, presented by Christopher Bigsby, Miller's biographer. It was first broadcast in 2006.

Christopher Bigsby hears from great actors - Dustin Hoffman, Warren Mitchell, Brian Dennehy, Alun Armstrong and Ying Ruocheng - about playing the role. Ying, who played Willy in Miller's production on Beijing, speaks about how this play, set in capitalist America, nonetheless spoke to Chinese people in 1983.

John Malkovich and Marjorie Yates, who played Biff and Linda, and the directors Michael Rudman, David Thacker and Bob Falls, recall working with the author, and in recordings made in the year before he died, Arthur Miller reflects on the Everyman he created.

Producer: Julian May.

First broadcast on Radio 4 in 2006.

FRI 20:30 Soul Music (b01b9jp0)
Series 13

Baker Street

Baker Street is Gerry Rafferty's glorious and instantly recognisable hit.

It’s arguably the most popular track from his widely respected musical legacy. (Gerry sadly died aged just 63 in 2011)

His daughter Martha Rafferty recalls hearing him develop the melody in the attic of their Glasgow home. His inspiration for the lyrics came from a book by Colin Wilson about the sense of disconnection from the world that artists often feel.

Featuring:

Musician and founder member of Stealer's Wheel, Rab Noakes.
Singer-songwriter, Betsy Cook
Poet, Ian McMillan
Busker, Gavin Randle
Guitarist, Hugh Burns

Music featured:

An acoustic version of Baker Street is played especially for Soul Music by the Hugh Burns.

The original demo of Baker Street, on which Gerry Rafferty plays the famous sax solo on guitar.

Series exploring famous pieces of music and their emotional appeal.

Producer: Karen Gregor (whose first decision when starting work on this programme was to NOT mention the urban myth about Bob Holness and the saxophone riff!)

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in January 2012

FRI 21:00 And the Academy Award Goes To... (b01qctqr)
Series 4

On The Waterfront

Paul Gambaccini returns with the series about how some of the greatest Best Picture Oscar winning films were made, and what they tell us about the history of the time.

The 27th Academy Awards, for films released in 1954, were dominated by 'On The Waterfront', a gritty, black and white masterpiece, set at the highly unionised New Jersey docks, then controlled by the mob.

A real tale of corruption and murder on the waterfront is transformed into a fiction - as a simple minded ex-boxer, played by Marlon Brando, wrestles with his conscience as he turns informer to win the girl he loves.

This film not only gives us the most famous scene ever to take place in the back of a taxi, ("I coulda been a contender!"), it also showcases the talents of director Elia Kazan, and an astonishingly strong support cast - Rod Steiger, Karl Malden, Lee J Cobb and newcomer Eva Marie Saint- Method Acting at its height.

It also marks the end of the powerful team of director Elia Kazan and Method actor Marlon Brando - blown apart by Brando's horror at Kazan's decision to testify in front of the House Un-American Activities Committee, HUAC - then investigating the red-scare in Hollywood.

Is it a coincidence that ‘On the Waterfront’ tells the story of a man who informs - snitches on his friends - but holds the moral high ground?

Featuring a rich mix of archive and original interviews with actors, screen writers and film critics, and a revelatory interview with Thomas Hanley, a real life longshoreman who played Brando's young friend Tommy back in 1954.

Producer: Sara Jane Hall

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in February 2013.

FRI 21:30 Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury (m001whfc)
Episode 10

Montag has found friends and evaded the authorities, for now.

There may be a way to save the books that still exist, and even those that do not.

Ray Bradbury's cult classic was first published in 1953 but it imagines a world very like today, in which sophisticated mass media are used to pacify and control people; love is a commodity; attention spans are short and police hunts are live entertainment.

Poetic, dazzling and shocking: Ray Bradbury's vision of the future has become terrifyingly familiar.

Read by Alex Jennings.

Abridged by Sara Davies.

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in July 2017.

Meanwhile Dave is trying to boost the sales of his homemade fish paste by getting a celebrity endorsement.
