Series 12

Holding On, Digging Out & Hanging Up

True stories told live in the USA: Meg Bowles introduces stories where everyday moments have lasting impacts.

The Moth is an acclaimed not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the art and craft of storytelling based in the USA. Since 1997, it has celebrated both the raconteur and the storytelling novice, who has lived through something extraordinary and yearns to share it.

Originally formed by the writer George Dawes Green as an intimate gathering of friends on a porch in Georgia (where moths would flutter in through a hole in the screen), and then recreated in a New York City living room, The Moth quickly grew to produce immensely popular events at theatres and clubs around New York City and later around the USA, the UK and other parts of the world.

The Moth has presented more than 15,000 stories, told live and without notes, to standing-room-only crowds worldwide. The Moth podcast is downloaded over 27 million times a year.

Featuring true stories told live on stage without scripts, from the humorous to the heart-breaking.

The Moth Radio Hour is produced by Jay Allison and Atlantic Public Media in Woods Hole, Massachusetts and is distributed by the Public Radio Exchange.

It's Guy Montag's job to know these things: he's a fireman and he burns books for a living. He loves his job doing this service for the public, but he is not happy. As his life unravels he begins to question all his beliefs.

Ray Bradbury's cult classic was first published in 1953 but it imagines a world very like 2017, in which sophisticated mass media are used to pacify and control people; love is a commodity; attention spans are short and police hunts are live entertainment.

Poetic, dazzling and shocking: Ray Bradbury's vision of the future has become terrifyingly familiar.

Autumn: Wedding

Linda and Geoff make the final preparations for their wedding

There's lots to be done - the choice of best men and who's allowed to kiss the groom, preys on Geoff's mind. Then there's the questionable assistance of the juggling Danish Kurd, Soran, accident prone Ian and the Gothic brother-in-law Anders as they prepare Geoff's Svensexa (or stag do).

Will Geoff survive the celebrations? Will he understand a word of his own marriage ceremony? And will his parents in law stop laughing at him?

The third series of Danny Robins' sitcom, set and recorded in Sweden.

Starring Edinburgh Comedy Award-winner Adam Riches, Danny Robins and a cast of Sweden's most popular TV comedy actors.

It's three years since Geoff moved to the tiny north Swedish town of Yxsjö with his girlfriend Linda. It has been quite a culture shock and they've been through a lot in three years - rotting herring, moose and bears, battles with language, perfect ex-boyfriends and ice hockey, the birth of a son, a marriage proposal and a runaway hot air balloon.

This year promises much as Geoff's mother-in-law Gunilla teaches him Swedish and his father-in-law Sten tries to make a Swedish man of him - in an entirely non-sexist way. Geoff and Linda start to plan their wedding with the questionable help of fellow ex-pat divorcee Ian, Linda's brother, depressive Goth Anders and fellow immigrant, Kurdish Dane, Soran.

3. Eve

“You’re right, I’m your best friend – I always will be,” writes Tove Jansson to Eva Konikoff in 1947.

It is over six years since Eva moved to the USA but their friendship endures.

Out of the thousands of letters Moomin creator Tove Jansson wrote, a cache remains that she addressed to her family, her dearest confidantes, and her lovers, both male and female.

Into these, she spilled her innermost thoughts, defended her ideals and revealed her heart.

To read these letters is both an act of startling intimacy and a rare privilege.

Penned with grace and humour, Letters from Tove offers an almost seamless commentary on Tove Jansson's life as it unfolds within Helsinki's bohemian circles and her island home.

Spanning 50 years between her art studies and the height of Moomin fame, we hear the bleakness of war, the hopes for love that were dashed and renewed, and her determined attempts to establish herself as an artist.

Phil Wang: Wangsplaining

The UK is more divided than ever, and no one seems able to agree on anything.

What does it mean to be British? To be a man? To be white or “of colour”, gay or straight, young or old, or none of the above? It seems we can’t see the woods for the trees.

What’s needed is a little outside perspective.

Enter: Phil Wang – a caustic British-Malaysian comedian who grew up on the island of Borneo. A centrist with a heart; an artist with an engineering degree.

In this pilot episode, Phil turns his attention to the British Empire - was British colonialism really one big crime?

Modern liberalism would say so, but Phil’s Dad sure misses those prompt British buses – “I wish they’d come take us over again. Maybe I’d get to work on time!”

Written by and starring Phil Wang

This week looks at what we could do if a giant asteroid was heading straight for us and looks at where else we might be able to go in the solar system if Earth was destroyed, and how we might get there. And we ask the most searching of all questions, why didn't the dinosaurs avoid extinction by developing a space programme of their own? And if they had, how could a T Rex have flown a spaceship with those tiny arms?

With Helen Keen, Peter Serafinowicz, Susy Kane.

Written by Helen Keen and Miriam Underhill.

Produced by Gareth Edwards.

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in June 2012.

4. Atos

Tove Jansson decribes Atos Wirtanen, author, politician, journalist and newspaper editor, in 1944. They have been a couple for over a year.

Meanwhile in a low-rent Miami gym, the underdog Cassius Clay trains to fight reigning champion Sonny Liston for the world title. The pundits say Clay hasn't a hope. Quite unexpectedly, the paths of these legendary figures cross.

British photographer Harry Benson arranges for The Beatles to visit Cassius Clay in the gym. Clay picks up Ringo and swings him around the ring as if he's no heavier than a toddler, as the other band-members lie at his feet. Clay pretends to knock all four Beatles down with a single punch. The resulting images remain in the memory long after this brief encounter.

The Beatles triumph on TV. Cassius Clay amazes all the boxing writers by defeating Liston. They suddenly both find themselves on the cusp of a new kind of stardom - they're young, outspoken and able to capture the global imagination.

John Wilson reports from Miami on the background to this unique encounter, with the memories of three people who were there at the time: photographer Harry Benson, who was travelling with the Beatles, writer Robert Lipsyte, who was covering the fight for the New York Times as a rookie reporter, and fight doctor Ferdie Pacheco, then working at the gym in Miami. All witnessed the moment when Cassius met The Beatles. John also taps the memories of Paul McCartney.

Rhapsody in Blue

"I'm convinced it's the best thing ever written and recorded in the history of things written and recorded" - Moby.

Rhapsody in Blue was premiered on February 12, 1924, in New York's Aeolian Hall. Through its use at the opening of Woody Allen's 'Manhattan' it’s become synonymous with the city that inspired its creation.

But for people around the world, George Gershwin's "experiment in modern music" has become imbued with the most personal of memories. LA based screen writer Charles Peacock reflects on how this piece has become entwined with his life and how, on an evening at the Hollywood Bowl this music "healed him". When Adela Galasiu was growing up in communist Romania, Rhapsody in Blue represented "life itself, as seen through the eyes of an optimist".

For world speed champion Gina Campbell, the opening of that piece will forever remind her of the roar of the Bluebird's ignition as it flew through the "glass like stillness of the water" and brings back the memories of her father, the legendary Donald Campbell - it was played at his funeral when he was finally laid to rest decades after his fatal record attempt on Coniston Lake.

Featuring interviews with Professor of Music Howard Pollock and musician Moby.

Producer: Nicola Humphries

Series 3

Unforgiven

The series about how some of the greatest Oscar-winning films were made, and what they tell us about the history of the time.

Clint Eastwood's 1992 film Unforgiven, starring Morgan Freeman, Gene Hackman and Eastwood himself as both actor and director, won the Best Picture Oscar.

Paul Gambaccini reflects on Clint Eastwood’s extraordinary Hollywood career, from the epitome of the lonesome cowboy to respected Hollywood director.

When the screenplay of Unforgiven landed on his desk, Clint Eastwood optioned it, then sat on it for two decades, developing his directoral skills, gathering a team of experts around him at Malpaso Productions, and waiting till he himself was the right age to take the leading role.

Film editor Joel Cox, cinematographer Jack N. Green, actor Jaimz Woolvett and screen writer David Webb Peoples tell of the experience of working with a legend as director and star.

While biographer Richard Schickle, and critics David Thomson and Kenneth Turan ruminate on how Clint Eastwood, the eternal cowboy, became Best Picture director.

Producer: Sarah Jane Hall

Episode 3

Ian Leslie presents the show which brings to light the often surprising first literary attempts of the world's best known writers.

In this episode, we gain some understanding of the force that was to be reckoned with in the case of William Blake, and how his spiritual leanings came to bear on his copy for public signs in London parks.

We also hear the beginnings of Will Self's acerbic style in his submission as a child, re-working a classic fairy tale for an adolescent magazine.

There's also the much loved poet Pam Ayres and her sadly unused submission for a reworking of the 3 minute warning in the event of a nuclear bomb.

Finally, we hear another of the questionable offerings from Henrik Ibsen to the joke department of a Christmas cracker manufacturer.

Producer: Claire Broughton

A Hat Trick production for BBC Radio 4 first broadcast in June 2015.
