SAT 10:30 Blue Canvas : The Artist Miles Davis (b07c2w62)
Miles Davis remains one of the most influential musicians from the last century, despite his death in 1991.

But what's less well known is that he dedicated the final years of his life to painting with the same fervent energy he had devoted to music.

"A painting is music you can see, and music is a painting you can hear." Miles Davis

New York artist Jo Gelbard who became Miles Davis's companion during the last years of his life, tells the story of his little known life as a painter, alongside interviews with his friends and family.

The story begins with Davis' sudden stroke in 1982, when he took up art as a therapy after his illness. Soon after, he met Gelbard who was 24 years his junior and they embarked on a turbulent relationship which resulted in an extraordinary artistic collaboration.

Davis's son Erin recalls how his father always carried two things - his trumpet case and his paint brushes - and he sat surrounded by canvases in the apartment they shared, painting with a furious energy.

Musician and painter Robert Wilburn III who spent a lot of time with Davis during his final decades, discusses the relationship between art and music, rhythm, colour and space in his performances and his paintings.

And the author George Cole, who wrote a book about the final years of the trumpeter's life, talks about the importance of his art.

Woven into the programme is a soundtrack of Davis' music, and clips from a never-before-broadcast interview with the writer Scott Gutterman, the author of a book about the trumpeter's art, and who recorded with Davis over several months shortly before he died in 1991.

Producer: Jo Wheeler

Made to mark 90 years since Miles was born - 26th May 1926.

SUN 06:00 Poetry Extra (m001w0w3)
Moss Side Gym Stories - 2. Moss Side Mirrors

Poet Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's poetry extra and chooses Moss Side Gym Stories with Jackie Kay inspired by Manchester's Moss Side Leisure Centre.

Plus Daljit reads a poem from this month's Poetry Extra Book of the Month - an anthology of poems:- Out of Sri Lanka.

Jackie Kay, acclaimed writer and formerly Scotland's Makar, writes a poem, commissioned by the BBC and inspired by the women who use Manchester's Moss Side Leisure Centre.

Close to the Centre are streets named in honour of one of the city’s most famous residents, Elizabeth Gaskell, who moved to Manchester in the 1830s and knew these streets, as fields. In her debut novel, Mary Barton, Gaskell described this area as a place of serene rural beauty, where Manchester’s families would come to walk, talk, rest and rejuvenate.

By the later part of the 20th century, the green fields had been replaced by housing estates. Moss Side's reputation for riots, gangs and guns spread nationwide but its ability to inspire writers remained intact, and a peaceful oasis - otherwise known as the Moss Side Leisure Centre - could still be found.

Jackie Kay premieres her 21st century response - Moss Side Mirrors - an ode to the women who, like their 19th century antecedents immortalised by Elizabeth Gaskell, have found in this neighbourhood a place to escape from the pressures of daily life - to breathe deeply, unwind, and renew themselves.

Produced at BBC Salford by Claire Press and Ekene Akalawu.

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2016.

BAFTA Winners

Colin Firth

Kirsty Young introduces an archive episode revisiting the castaway choices of a BAFTA and Academy Award winning actor.

Colin Firth is castaway by Sue Lawley.

He created an iconic moment in British TV history when, as Jane Austen's hero Mr Darcy, he emerged wet-shirted from his stately lake.

To his surprise, he became a sex symbol, was dubbed the 'male Ursula Andress' and was voted Britain's Most Popular Actor in a BBC poll. He went on to send up the role on the big screen - as the ironically-named Mark Darcy, the brooding boyfriend of Bridget Jones.

He always knew he wanted to act - from the moment when, as a five year old boy, he took on the role of Jack Frost at a school panto. He studied at the Drama Centre in London's Chalk Farm - where one of his teachers, Christopher Fettes, said he was by nature a poet and compared his acting to that of Paul Schofield.

Married to an Italian woman and with two young sons, he now divides his time between life in London and in Italy.

Series 2

Chimps

They say - David Attenborough reports - that we share more of our genes with chimpanzees than any other species alive today.

It was this proximity of Homo Sapiens to the chimpanzee which motivated him even more to film behaviour never before seen.

It had been known for some time that chimps hunt monkeys for meat, but it would be a first to film it for TV audiences.

To film such a hunt required days of waiting and tracking a troop through the Equatorial African forest - and when the hunt came and was over it changed Sir David Attenborough's view of chimps and their importance to us, forever.

Written and presented by David Attenborough.

Producer: Julian Hector

Stephen and his guest reflect with empathy and humour on why we get embarrassed, where our shame thresholds should be, and the value of guilt.

In this episode, prolific novelist and writer Marian Keyes confesses, from her home in Dublin, details of a disservice she did that still haunts her 20 years after the event. She also tells tales of a lost glove and of Joan of Arc at a fancy dress ball.

Heroes, Icons & Superstars

True stories told live in the USA: Jay Allison introduces storytellers encountering the people they’ve always wanted to meet.

The Moth is an acclaimed not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the art and craft of storytelling based in the USA. Since 1997, it has celebrated both the raconteur and the storytelling novice, who has lived through something extraordinary and yearns to share it.

Originally formed by the writer George Dawes Green as an intimate gathering of friends on a porch in Georgia (where moths would flutter in through a hole in the screen), and then recreated in a New York City living room,

The Moth quickly grew to produce immensely popular events at theatres and clubs around New York City and later around the USA, the UK and other parts of the world.

The Moth has presented more than 15,000 stories, told live and without notes, to standing-room-only crowds worldwide. The Moth podcast is downloaded over 27 million times a year.

Featuring true stories told live on stage without scripts, from the humorous to the heart-breaking.

The Moth Radio Hour is produced by Jay Allison and Atlantic Public Media in Woods Hole, Massachusetts and is distributed by the Public Radio Exchange.

Summer: New Swedes

Geoff's father-in-law Sten sponsors Ashkan, a young refugee from Afghanistan, who has applied for asylum.

Was Trump right? Is Sweden being overwhelmed by refugees? Why is Sten friends with a Swedish cowboy, played by the original Wallander, Krister Henriksson? And is football the only truly international language?

The third series of Danny Robins' sitcom, set and recorded in Sweden.

Starring Edinburgh Comedy Award-winner Adam Riches, Danny Robins and a cast of Sweden's most popular TV comedy actors.

It's three years since Geoff moved to the tiny north Swedish town of Yxsjö with his girlfriend Linda. It has been quite a culture shock and they've been through a lot in three years - rotting herring, moose and bears, battles with language, perfect ex-boyfriends and ice hockey, the birth of a son, a marriage proposal and a runaway hot air balloon.

This year promises much as Geoff's mother-in-law Gunilla teaches him Swedish and his father-in-law Sten tries to make a Swedish man of him - in an entirely non-sexist way. Geoff and Linda start to plan their wedding with the questionable help of fellow ex-pat divorcee Ian, Linda's brother, depressive Goth Anders and fellow immigrant, Kurdish Dane Soran.

Captive Media: The Story of Patty Hearst

On 17 May 1974, in the district of Compton in Los Angeles, American network television broadcast live the longest gunfight in the nation's history, in a scene worthy of the studios of nearby Hollywood.

It marked the beginning of the end for the Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA), a leftist guerrilla group that sprang to fame three months earlier after kidnapping heiress Patricia Hearst, granddaughter of the newspaper magnate, William Randolph Hearst.

This saga - described as "probably the mystery story of the 20th Century" - is one of the most bizarre episodes of recent American history. Within hours of Patty's kidnapping the media arrived outside the Hearst mansion, where they would camp out in a self-styled 'press city'. Communiqués issued by the SLA on cassette tapes, often spoken by Patty herself, were broadcast in full. The family posted a sign that read 'Please don't feed reporters'.

After 57 days in captivity, sympathy for the captive heiress turned to shock as she declared herself a member of the SLA, denounced her family and was pictured wielding a gun as the gang robbed a bank in San Francisco. 18 months later Patty was arrested, and convicted in what the press called 'The Trial of the Century'.

Four decades on, Benjamin Ramm explores how this sensational story was driven by exhaustive daily media coverage. He asks to what extent it changed the way news was reported and anticipated many of today's debates about the ethics and appetites of rolling news.

Interviewees include Linda Deutsch, renowned court reporter; John Lester, a news anchor who became the Hearst family spokesman; Bill Deiz, who reported the LA shootout using new camera technology; and former member of the SLA, Mike Bortin.

Producer: Rebecca Maxted.

WED 23:30 Helen Keen's It Is Rocket Science (b01j5nxt)
Series 2

Episode 3

Helen Keen, Peter Serafinowicz and Susy Kane star in the funny but true history of space exploration.

This week, given that on a rocket every ounce of saved weight is crucial, an astronaut who weighs 15% less and breathes less oxygen should have a tremendous advantage. So where were all of NASA's female astronauts? The story of Soviet pioneer Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman in space, who at one time logged more hours in orbit than all the male American astronauts put together makes a thought-provoking contrast to the marginalised female astronauts of the USA, the so called Mercury 13, none of whom ever got to go into space.

Written by Helen Keen and Miriam Underhill
Produced by Gareth Edwards.

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in May 2012.

Blazing Saddles

Journalist Gerry Northam explores the history behind the cinematic versions of our past.

Mel Brooks's 1974 spoof western Blazing Saddles has all the classic ingredients of the Wild West movie, a handsome hero, an alcoholic gunslinger and a tart-with-a-heart.

But how did the figure of the cowboy, a poorly paid, uneducated, itinerant labourer with no heroic traits at all, become a film star and a symbol of nobility and purity for all Americans?

Shipbuilding

Written by Elvis Costello and Clive Langer for Robert Wyatt, Shipbuilding was recorded in several versions by Elvis Costello himself, Suede, June Tabor, Hue and Cry, Tamsin Archer and The Unthanks.

The blend of subtle lyrics and extraordinary music makes this a political song like no other. It transcends the particular circumstances of its writing: the Falklands War and the decline of British heavy industry, especially ship-building.

Clive and Elvis describe how the song was written in 1982 and how legendary jazz trumpeter and flugelhorn player, Chet Baker, came to perform on Costello's version.

Philosopher Richard Ashcroft wants the song, which he sees as a kind of secular hymn, played at his funeral because it gives a perfect expression of how he believes we should think about life. Not being able to feel the emotion of the song would, he feels, be like being morally tone-deaf. If you don't like this song, he'd find it hard to be your friend.

The song's achingly beautiful final couplet about "diving for pearls" makes former MP Alan Johnson cry.
It's also inspired an oral history and migrant integration project in Glasgow. Chris Gourley describes how the participants found a way to overcome their lack of English and communicate through a shared understanding of ship-building practice.

Other contributors include Hopi Sen, a political blogger who was an unusually political child, and the Mercury Prize winning folk group The Unthanks. They toured their version to towns with ship-building connections as part of a live performance of a film tracing the history of British ship-building using archive footage.

Gigi

Paul Gambaccini tells how in 1959, the Gallic charm of Gigi, starring Leslie Caron, Maurice Chevalier and Louis Jourdan, won nine Oscars, including Best Picture.

In April 1959 the musical Gigi broke the previous record of eight awards which went to Gone With The Wind in 1940.

Paul Gambaccini discovers how the combination of Gallic charm and memorable songs, including The Night They Invented Champagne, Gigi and I Remember It Well, sanitised Colette's risque novella for the big screen.

Considered to be the last of MGM's great musicals, Gigi tells the story of a young girl being groomed as a courtesan and the movie's producers battled with the censors to get it made. Director Vincente Minnelli's lavish film, which was shot mostly in Paris, sugar-coated the subject matter and Caron's gamine performance melted Hollywood cinema goers.

The programme also explores how Gigi represented the passionate early days of the on-off American love affair with France - a relationship that has come under strain in recent years following the war in Iraq.

Producer: Paula McGinley

World's End on Sea

Justin Edwards, Mel Giedroyc and Dave Mounfield have been invited by the Mayor of seaside town World's End on Sea to perform a hair raising tribute to Houdini.

Justin’s invited the "nicest woman in showbiz", Rebecca Front, to join them. But he’s unaware of history between Mel and Rebecca, dating back to them appearing on Celebrity Supermarket Sweep.

It turns out that Justin also doesn't know much about Houdini - believing him to be an Italian woman. Luckily Dave, fearing the show may be a disaster causing him to miss out on the free lighter promised by the Mayor, is on hand to rewrite the play.

Mel persuades Rebecca to perform a radio first, a recreation of one of Houdini's most daring stunts. But will the truth of what really happened on Supermarket Sweep ever be revealed?

Will the show restore the fortunes of the once fashionable seaside town? Will Dave get his free lighter?

Ian Leslie presents the show that brings to light the often surprising, first literary attempts of the world's best known writers.

In this episode, we get a valuable insight into the origins of Henry Longfellow's poetic success - in the guise of a letter of complaint to a boiler repair company.

We also hear the troubled, adolescent Mary Shelley craft disturbing notes to accompany floral tributes, marvel at the deliciously spooky auction catalogue copy written by MR James, and hear a slightly disturbing Christmas cracker joke by Fredrik Ibsen.

Producer: Claire Broughton
