SAT 07:30 Maid by Stephanie Land (Omnibus) (m00027sl)
Stephanie Land’s hard-hitting account of living on minimum wages in present-day America.

Read by Lanna Joffrey.

Struggling to support her young daughter as a single parent, Stephanie finds work as a cleaner in the US tourist resort of Port Townsend, Washington State.

Her memoir tells the story of this new life, scrubbing bathrooms, scraping food off the ceiling of trailers, and becoming an invisible ghost in the houses she cleans.

“I became fascinated by the things hidden in the dark corners of the houses I cleaned. The snooping was like uncovering clues, finding evidence of the secret lives of people who seemed like they had it all. I began to pay attention to the items that cluttered their kitchen counters: the receipts for rugs that were as expensive as my car, the bill for the dry cleaner that could replace half my wardrobe. Most of my clients worked long hours, away from the homes they fought so hard to pay for. They worked to pay me just above the minimum wage, to keep it all spotless, in place, acceptable.”

We hear about the relationships she forms with her clients, including the moving story of her friendship with Wendy, a woman who is dying of cancer and who hires Stephanie to help her parcel up her possessions and set her whole house in order. Even when Stephanie doesn’t meet her clients, she vividly imagines their lives.

She begins to give the different houses nick-names - “the Cigarette House”, “the Porn House”. Through it all, she is sustained by her love for her daughter Mia, and her determination to keep food on the table.

And, in the end, her ambition to become a writer provides an escape.

SAT 22:00 Can't Tell Nathan Caton Nothing (b04hz62m)
Series 3

About Paranoia

Nathan Caton illustrates how watching too much TV can make you paranoid - and that can have serious repercussions for your family.

A mix of stand-up and re-enacted family life - written by Nathan Caton and James Kettle

After becoming the first in his family to graduate from University, Nathan opted not to use his architecture degree but instead to try his hand at being a full-time stand-up comedian, much to his family's horror and disgust. They desperately want him to get a 'proper job.'

Janet a.k.a. Mum is probably the kindest and most lenient of the disappointed family members. At the end of the day she just wants the best for her son. However, she'd also love to brag and show her son off to her friends, but with Nathan only telling jokes for a living that's kind of hard to do.

Martin a.k.a. Dad works in the construction industry and was looking forward to his son getting a degree so the two of them could work together in the same field. But now Nathan has blown that dream out of the window. Martin is clumsy and hard-headed and leaves running the house to his wife (she wouldn't allow it to be any other way).

Shirley a.k.a. Grandma cannot believe Nathan turned down architecture for comedy. She can't believe she left the paradise in the West Indies and came to the freezing United Kingdom for a better life so that years later her grandson could 'tell jokes!' How can her grandson go on stage and use foul language and filthy material... it's not the good Christian way!

So with all this going on in the household what will Nathan do? Will he persevere and follow his dreams? Or will he give in to his family's interference? Or will he finally leave home?!

Nathan ...... Nathan Caton

In The Studio - Sharon Olds: Poetry Coming Down My Arm

Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's poetry archive and chooses In The Studio - Sharon Olds: Poetry Coming Down My Arm.

The American poet Sharon Olds has been one of the leading voices in contemporary poetry since her first book was published in 1980. She won the Pulitzer Prize in 2013 for Stag’s Leap, her extraordinary collection of poems chronicling the breakup of her marriage, with its themes of love, family, sorrow, desire and memory, which have echoed throughout her work.

But her career as a poet nearly didn’t happen. Her first poems were dismissed by some editors who saw them as not literary enough, perhaps objecting to the intense way she wrote about sexual love and the minutiae of being a woman. But it’s precisely those qualities that have won her new generations of fans and critical praise across the world.

After a period of long isolation due to the pandemic, Sharon talks to Emma Kingsley about her work and how lockdown has affected her perception of the world. She describes how she creates new poems and how the words and images travel down her arm and out through the pen.

Series 1

Health and Beauty

Multi-award winning comic Mark Watson attempts to answer the big questions and make sense of life.

He's assisted by Tim Key and Tom Basden.

This time, Mark investigates "Health & Beauty".

Our world is full of people telling us how to be healthier and more attractive.

But how can we tell if we are well, both mentally and physically? Does living more healthily lead to better mental health, or not so much because you have to eat stuff like cabbage and you wish you were dead?

At the same time many people claim to be beautiful, but does beauty really matter or is it, as the popular saying goes, in the eye of the beholder?

Why is it so hard to get to the bottom of what will make us look and feel good, and will this eternal quest ever end?

Written and performed by Mark Watson.

Producer: Lianne Coop

Charming, indiscreet and quite possibly wanted by Interpol, if you want a discrete nip and tuck and then photos of it accidentally left on the photocopier, Dr Cadogan is your man.

Their happy life is interrupted by the arrival of Simon Nielson, a man with a mission, a mission to close down inefficient libraries. Fortunately, he hates his mission. What he really wants to do is once, just once, get even with his inexhaustible supply of high-achieving brothers.

FRI 20:00 The Secret History of Yoga (b07flbst)
Mukti Jain Campion sets out to explore the roots of modern yoga practice.

Like millions of people across the world, Mukti attends regular yoga classes and enjoys its many physical and mental benefits while believing it to be the “timeless Indian discipline” so often described in yoga books.

But recent research challenges this common assumption. Could modern yoga classes, as now taught all around the world, actually be the product of 19th century Scandinavian gymnastics as much as ancient Indian philosophy?

Startled by this possibility, Mukti sets out to explore the roots of modern yoga practice and uncovers an extraordinary multicultural history in which early 20th century European ideas of health, fitness and the cult of the Body Beautiful became intertwined with Indian nationalism and the revival of Indian interest in its own traditions of physical culture. Out of this heady mix emerged a new generation of yoga innovators who transformed an obsolete and frowned-upon practice of Indian holy men into something that would appeal to masses of ordinary people.

Contributors include Dr Mark Singleton, author of Yoga Body: The origins of modern posture practice, Dr Jim Mallinson, a Yoga historian from the School of Oriental and African Studies in London, Dr Manmath Gharote, Director of the Lonavla Yoga Institute in India and Dr Suzanne Newcombe from The London School of Economics who has studied the development of yoga in Britain.

Sittin' On the Dock of the Bay

‘Sittin' On The Dock Of The Bay’ was written whilst Otis Redding was reflecting on his life on Sausalito Bay, California in the summer of 1967. Its upbeat, laidback melody belies the loneliness of the lyrics.

In December of the same year, Otis was killed in a plane crash. The song was subsequently released and became the first posthumous Number 1 record in the US.

His musician contemporaries including Booker T Jones and guitarist Steve Cropper, who co-wrote Dock of the Bay, tell the story of the song's genesis, and people in their twenties to their eighties reveal why they relate it to dramatic periods in their lives.

Producers: Maggie Ayre and Mair Bosworth

From the husband who stopped her from composing so she could be a homemaker, to the bitter ex-lover who made a lifesize doll of her then decapitated it in rage, Mahler's life was filled with shocking stories. So in this episode choreographer and TV presenter Arlene Phillips joins Tom and Ben to analyse the truths and myths behind Alma's life to place her on the monster scale.

Listen only on BBC Sounds.
