SAT 22:00 Susan Calman - Keep Calman Carry On (b09h6k15)
Series 2

Gardening

Susan Calman is the least relaxed person she knows.

She has no down time, no hobbies (unless you count dressing up your cats in silly outfits) and her idea of relaxation is to sit on her sofa playing Assassin's Creed, an hour into which she is in a murderous rage with sky high blood pressure. Her wife had to threaten to divorce her to make her go on holiday, and she's been told by the same long-suffering wife that unless she finds a way to switch off, and soon, she's going to be unbearable.

Susan decided her best bet was to try to immerse herself in the pursuits that her friends find relaxing, to find her inner zen and outer tranquillity.

In her first series, she attempted to find the new Susan Calm, by watching Cricket; going Hillwalking; visiting an Art Gallery and being spontaneous. She enjoyed these pursuits, but all too soon found herself slipping back into her old ways. So she's trying again.

For starters, she’s taking a trip to the Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh to learn about Gardening with Val McDermid, in the hope of one day being able to tell her Euphorbia from Euphoria.

In this audience stand up show, Susan reveals how successful she's been - both at relaxing and at the pursuit itself - as well as playing in and discussing a handful of illustrative clips from her efforts.

Written by Susan Calman and Jon Hunter.

Series 2

Religion

More potentially misremembered anecdotes from Andy Hamilton.

This time Andy considers Religion.

From his early experiences as a choirboy through to his confirmation as a Church of England atheist. He shares fond memories of playing Satan in Radio 4’s long running sit com ‘Old Harry’s Game’. Andy also muses on the enduring popularity of religion. And which deity might be best at sport.

Andy was born in Fulham in 1954, read English at Cambridge and then in 1976 began writing comedy for BBC Radio, on programmes like Week Ending and The News Huddlines. In 1990, he and Guy Jenkin created Drop the Dead Donkey for Channel 4.

Andy has spent much of his working life making acute observations about politics and family life.

In 2007, again with Guy Jenkin, he created the massive TV hit, Outnumbered, which celebrated the chaos of life with young children. More recently they created the highly topical Ballot Monkeys for Channel 4, which charted the absurdities of the General Election and then the EU Referendum.

For over 20 years he has been playing the part of Satan in his Radio 4 sitcom, Old Harry's Game. Andy is also a popular panellist on shows such as The News Quiz and Have I Got News For You.

For the first time, England was engaging with the whole world.

First in an object-based history series presented by Neil MacGregor, former Director of the British Museum.

Taking artefacts from William Shakespeare's time, he explores how Elizabethan and Jacobean playgoers made sense of the unstable and rapidly changing world in which they lived.

With old certainties shifting around them, in a time of political and religious unrest and economic expansion, Neil asks what the plays would have meant to the public when they were first performed.

He uses carefully selected objects to explore the great issues of the day that preoccupied the public and helped shape the works, and he considers what they can reveal about the concerns and beliefs of Shakespearean England.

Pilot

Katherine Parkinson and Julian Rhind-Tutt star in this 'Comedy Showcase' pilot about an alien invasion of a small English village.

The Geonin are not your typical alien invaders. Instead of the usual all-at-once approach to global domination (which usually fails, they've noticed) they've decided to start small. They've encircled a small English village with an impenetrable heat wave, preventing anything coming in or out.

With Cresdon Green as their base, they will learn about humankind, using their knowledge to effectively and efficiently spread their domination over the rest of the world, bit by bit.

Katrina just came back to borrow some money from her parents. And, having been turned down, she's really in no mood to stick around - but the Geonin are not letting anyone in or out, and she has tickets to the theatre in London.

So what choice does she have but to start The Resistance?

Following this successful pilot - two series were produced with an amended cast.

Graham Nash (A-side)

Graham Nash talks about his debut 1971 album 'Songs For Beginners'.

Series in which leading performers and songwriters talk about the album that made them or changed them.

Recorded in front of a live audience at the BBC's iconic Maida Vale Studios, each edition includes two episodes - the A-side and B-side.

In the A-side, Graham talks to John Wilson.

Graham Nash has twice been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of fame - once with The Hollies and then with Crosby, Stills and Nash.

In May 1971 he released Songs For Beginners as a solo project (it was one of four solo albums released by each member of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young in the wake of their hit album Deja Vu).

Made directly following his breakup with Joni Mitchell, many of the songs are about their time together. But it's an album that also reflects his political activism and so the confessional "Simple Man" and wistful "Better Days" sit alongside the still prescient "Military Madness" and the heartfelt "Chicago".

In the B-side of the programme, it's the turn of the audience to ask the questions.

Producer Paul Kobrak

Sobriety, Touch, Camellia Sinensis, Trust

Best Medicine is your weekly dose of laughter, hope and incredible medicine. Award-winning comedian Kiri Pritchard-McLean is joined by funny and fascinating comedians, doctors, scientists and historians to celebrate medicine’s inspiring past, present and future.

Each week, Kiri challenges her guests to make a case for what they think is 'the best medicine', and each of them champions anything from world-changing science to an obscure invention, an every-day treatment, an uplifting worldview, an unsung hero or a futuristic cure.

Whether it’s micro-robotic surgery, virtual reality syringes, Victorian clockwork surgical saws, more than a few ingenious cures for cancer, world-first lifesaving heart operations, epidurals, therapy, dancing, faith or laughter - it’s always something worth celebrating.

Joining Kiri this week are haptic technology specialist Dr Ally Barrow with the power of touch and a demonstration of virtual reality injections, mental health nurse Ed Freshwater speaks about a powerful treatment for mental illness, journalist and broadcaster Seyi Rhodes explores what happens when trust is lost in medicine, and comedian Felicity Ward offers sobriety as her best medicine.

He uses carefully selected objects to explore the great issues of the day that preoccupied the public and helped shape the works, and he considers what they can reveal about the concerns and beliefs of Shakespearean England.

WED 20:00 Pete Seeger in Word and Song (b00k2nkx)
The folk-singer and activist Pete Seeger was often known as "America's Tuning Fork".

His appearance at Barack Obama's first inauguration concert brought him to public attention once more.

Drawing on the BBC's extensive archive and on two recent new interviews with him, BBC World Service Arts Correspondent Vincent Dowd celebrates Seeger's life and examines his belief in the power of song.

Lucid and lively as ever, Pete spoke to Vincent as much about environmental and urban issues as about his lifelong commitment to disarmament and civil rights. Even at his grand old age, there was nothing predictable in his words - with refreshingly positive views about city life as the model of the future.

Above all, Seeger spoke about performing the Woody Guthrie song, This Land Is Your Land, with Bruce Springsteen outside the Lincoln Memorial for Barack Obama's inauguration. He also treated Vincent to an impromptu, unplugged version of This Land is Your Land.

Pete Seeger in Word and Song explores the continuing role of folk music in American political life while also celebrating the artist who brought the world songs such as Where Have All the Flowers Gone, If I Had a Hammer, Turn, Turn, Turn and new versions of spirituals such as We Shall Overcome.

Pete Seeger died in 2014 aged 94.

Series 4

1. "...monsters under the bed..."

Daliso Chaponda is back for a fourth series.

Episode 1 - Monsters Under The Bed.

In this new series, Daliso is in a more philosophical mood. We find him working through his thoughts, feelings, and opinions by sharing his stories with a live audience in his hometown of Manchester.

Since his last series, Daliso has become a British citizen and is looking forward to talking about anything other than being a migrant. To prove he’s no longer a 'Citizen of Nowhere', he’s decided to write silly jokes about animals, Hobbits, and monsters under the bed! But Daliso soon realises that he won’t get to truly enjoy his spoils just yet, because anti-immigrant sentiment has become unavoidable… In fact, what Daliso really finds in his first show since becoming a Brit is that those monsters under the bed have started to crawl out and take on a different meaning altogether.

Seeking advice from his father, a former refugee who worked for the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees before returning to Malawi and becoming a politician, he gets his expert opinion on the current migrant crisis and gets to the bottom of whether his dad really did try to ban farting in Malawi.

He has performed around the world and at the Edinburgh, Melbourne, Singapore, and Cape Town comedy festivals. He has also toured the UK and Africa to sell out audiences and rave reviews.

THU 07:15 Shakespeare's Restless World (b01g637c)
4. Life without Elizabeth

A portrait was painted in 1571 to justify and celebrate Elizabeth I's position in the Tudor succession.

Yet by the 1590s, with no direct Tudor heir, this image had very different implications in Shakespeare's Restless World.

Object-based history series presented by Neil MacGregor, former Director of the British Museum.

Spike Milligan

Henry Normal thinks Spike Milligan changed his life, in particular with his 1973 poetry collection, Small Dreams of a Scorpion.

Spike's other work - The Goon Show, the books about the war (Adolf Hitler: My Part in his Downfall and Rommel? Gunner Who?) these were important, but it was the poetry that really made Henry Normal think again.

Spike was born Terence Alan Milligan in India in 1918. His family moved to Catford in south east London in 1931. "It was the first time in life I was deprived of everything in vision ... except the sky," he says. There's a lot of Spike in this episode. "I think I'm a good comedy writer - I think I'm the best."

He died in February 2002. His gravestone in Winchelsea - which Henry Normal has visited - reads 'Duirt me leat go raibh me breoite' which is Gaelic for I told you I was ill.

Henry Normal was born in Nottingham, published his first book of poetry aged 19, and co-wrote The Mrs Merton Show and the first series of The Royle Family before setting up Baby Cow with Steve Coogan. The company's productions include Gavin and Stacey, Alan Partridge and the Mighty Boosh.

FRI 20:00 An Obsessive Type: The Tale of the Doves Typeface (b07lhh6z)
In 1916 TJ Cobden-Sanderson threw his precious Doves typeface into the River Thames in London after a bitter row..

Almost 100 years later, designer Robert Green set out on quest to restore it for the digital age.

A peer of William Morris, TJ Cobden-Sanderson first became known among the proponents of Arts and Crafts and even coined the term. But it was later at the turn of the 20th century that he became a leader of the British Private Press movement seeking to revive the tradition of the book as an object of art and manual skill.

In 1900 he established the Doves Press along with Emery Walker. But when they fell out, Cobden-Sanderson sabotaged their greatest achievement. He threw every piece of the Doves type into the Thames from nearby Hammersmith Bridge. The only record of the drowned type was the handful of valuable printed books.

A century later and graphic designer Robert Green nervously paces along the Thames riverbank.

This trip is the culmination of four years of his life and his art. He has persuaded the Port of London Authority divers to look for minuscule metal letters buried at the bottom of the river.

Presented and produced by Nicky Birch.

A Somethin’ Else production for BBC Radio 4, first broadcast in July 2016.

JP Doom interviews Viktor Schmelling about his career in comedy from his humble beginnings as a joke writer for the Queen through to his current role as Emeritus Professor of Princeton University's Faculty of Laughter. His message - life is horrible - you better learn to see the funny side.

Among the classic comedy sketches Schmelling singles out for posterity are the atheist episode of Sunday Worship; an old lag and his pet orang-utan; and 1950's cult The Demob Mob's remarkable episode on Hitler, liquorish allsorts and the awesome power of the non-sequitur.

Series 6

Episode 2

Everyone craves a place where their mind and body are not applied to a particular task. The nearest faraway place.

Somewhere for drifting and lighting upon strange thoughts which don't have to be shooed into context, but which can be followed like balloons escaping onto the air. Late at night, in the dark and in a bunk bed, your tired mind can wander.

This is the nearest faraway place for Patrick Marber and Peter Curran.

Here they endeavour to get the heart of things in an entertainingly vague and indirect way. This is not the place for typical male banter

Now they're discussing the ideal position for human genitals and if evolution should ever get a move on.

Producer: Peter Curran
