Director, writer and artist Derek Jarman’s chronicle of life in his remote cottage on the barren coast of Dungeness in the years after his HIV diagnosis.

Facing an uncertain future, Jarman found solace in nature, growing all manner of plants. Some perished beneath wind and sea-spray while others flourished, creating brilliant, unexpected beauty in the wilderness.

Modern Nature is both a diary of the garden and a meditation by Jarman on his own life: his childhood, his time as a young gay man in the 1960s and his renowned career as an artist, writer and film-maker.

It is at once a lament for a lost generation, an unabashed celebration of gay sexuality, and a devotion to all that is living.

Rupert Everett knew Jarman personally and features in the diaries.

The programme was recorded on location at Prospect Cottage, Jarman's former home, at the very desk where much of Modern Nature was written and features a rich soundscape of the house and area where it was recorded alongside a soundtrack of music taken from works by Benjamin Britten.

SUN 06:00 Poetry Extra (m001qdjj)
Mother Tongue - Lost and Found

Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's poetry archive and selects Mother Tongue - Lost and Found.

Poet Imtiaz Dharker hears poems written in Persian, Korean and Torwali - an endangered language, indigenous to Pakistan.

Starting with the phrase "Lost and Found", she reflects on how ideas of memory, loss and preservation have inspired these poets.

Imtiaz speaks to Azita Ghahreman, an Iranian poet now living in Sweden.

Her poems address themes of loss and exile, drawing on experiences of Iran’s book-burning years and tender memories of family and her childhood. The poems featured are from her collection Negative of a Group Photograph, with the English versions read by the translator, poet Maura Dooley. They were paired by the Poetry Translation Centre. Elhum Shakerifar produced the literal translations.

Kim Hyesoon is South Korea’s leading poet.

Her latest collection, Autobiography of Death, is an intense and startling sequence of poems, representing the forty-nine days during which, according to Buddhist belief, the spirit roams after death. She was driven to write them by the anger she felt at the deaths from the sinking of the Sewol ferry in South Korea, in 2014. Imtiaz speaks to Kim Hyesoon along with the translator, poet Don Mee Choi.

Finally, we hear poems in the Torwali language, an indigenous language from the Swat Valley in northern Pakistan which appears on UNESCO’s list of endangered languages.

Activist Zubair Torwali has collected several hundred ancient Zo poems from local elders, as part of his work to preserve and revive the Torwali language. We hear from British poet Chris McCabe, who has translated some of them and has edited an anthology of poetry in endangered languages, Poems from the Edge of Extinction, in which they appear.

In 1996 they played in front of 250,000 fans over two consecutive nights at Knebworth and following the Labour landslide in 1997, Noel attended what became known as the Cool Britannia party held in Downing Street by Tony Blair.

Radiolab Mixtape, continuing a special 4 part series featuring the impact of the cassette tape

Radiolab Mixtape 2 The Wandering Soul: an exploration of the Vietnam War and the ghosts it left behind haunting survivors today.

As the Vietnam war dragged on, the US military began desperately searching for any vulnerability in their North Vietnamese enemy. In 1964, they found it. It was an old Vietnamese folktale involving a ghost, eternal damnation and fear - a tailor made weaponizable myth. And so, armed with tape recorders and microphones, the military set out to win the war by bringing this ghost story to life.

The story of these efforts and their ghosts still haunt people today.

Radiolab Mixtape is reported, produced, scored and sound designed by Simon Adler.

This episode was produced by Annie McEwen, with original music by Annie. Original reporting was contributed by Trung Dung Vo and Nguyễn Vân Hà.

Steel Pulse (the A Side)

David Hinds and Selwyn Brown talk about Steel Pulse's 1978 debut album, 'Handsworth Revolution'.

Series in which leading performers and songwriters talk about the album that made them or changed them.

Recorded in front of a live audience at the BBC's iconic Maida Vale Studios, each edition includes two episodes - the A-side and B-side.

The A-side, David and Selwyn talk to John Wilson.

Originally formed at Handsworth Wood Boys School in 1975, Steel Pulse were initially refused live dates in Birmingham’s Caribbean venues because of their Rastafarian ideals. Instead they aligned themselves With Rock Against Racism and appeared alongside the likes of the Clash, XTC, the Stranglers, Tom Robinson and X-Ray Specs.

It was Burning Spear who brought the group to the attention of Island Records who in February 1978 first released Ku Klux Klan as a single – a full five months before the album itself, which also included Prodigal Son, Prediction and the title track, Handsworth Revolution.

Here David Hinds and Selwyn Brown talk about the album that is widely regarded a milestone in the development of British Reggae, but also perform exclusive acoustic versions of some of the key tracks.

In the B-side of the programme, it's the turn of the audience to ask the questions.

Producer: Paul Kobrak

* Highfalutin' - his main story revolves around his sister, Amy.

David Sedaris first shared his very particular world view having brought us The SantaLand Diaries back in 1996.

David has become one of America’s pre-eminent humour writers and, in 2019, was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

Spitfire: From the Ashes

Historian Victoria Taylor looks back at the Spitfire, and the men and women who built it, against all odds.

In September 1940, in two factories in Southampton, one of the most iconic planes of the Second World War was being painstakingly assembled, piece by piece. This sleek and beautiful fighter, with record breaking top speeds and a deadly reputation for precision, was to be Britain’s most notorious weapon against the Nazi air invasion. But, the factory making them was about to be destroyed by devastating German bombing raids.

How could the Battle of Britain be fought without the Spitfire? With the factory a smoking ruin, a plan was hatched to keep the planes coming, against some pretty extraordinary odds.

Reconstructed from letters, autobiographies, oral histories and contemporary interviews, historian Victoria Taylor pieces it all together. This isn’t the usual story, about the plane that saved Britain. This is a story about the ordinary men and women, in church-halls, bus depots, laundries and garages, who saved the Spitfire.

Radio 4 favourite Lucy Porter is back with an examination of middle aged, suburban life. Ably assisted by her young apprentice Luke Kempner, Lucy tackles bank holiday bin collection schedules, video doorbell footage, and being a member of the ‘sandwich generation’.

Apparently, human happiness peaks at 18, dips to its lowest point between the ages of 49 and 54, then picks up again - by the age of about 65 you’re as happy again as you were at 18. So this show will be a comfort to those in the dip, a warning to younger listeners, and will make the older generation feel incredibly smug.

Caravanning, lower back pain and the irresistible allure of Ken Bruce are all covered in this delightful celebration of midlife madness. This show is for you if you own at least one item of clothing that you bought In a garden centre, or if you get as much pleasure from an episode of The Repair Shop as you once did from a night of passion. Feel free to download it as something to listen to in the middle of the night when the hot flushes or prostate issues are keeping you up anyway.

THU 21:00 Great Lives (b01s8cnz)
Bill Shankly

Mumsnet founder Justine Roberts champions the life of Liverpool’s football manager Bill Shankly.

In the 1960s Bill Shankley took Liverpool from the second division to become one of the world's greatest sides.

Famous for his quip that "football is not a matter of life and death, it's much more important than that", Shankly lived and breathed football; but in his later years he felt that the Liverpool managers had frozen him out of the side he had nurtured, and betrayed him.

Shankly came from humble beginnings. After school he worked down the local coal mine until the pit was closed. He never became rich and lived in a modest semi-detached house where Liverpool fans were always welcome. His life was a far cry from that of today's top managers, but through his canny playing of the transfer market, did he anticipate their methods?

Matthew Parris chairs the discussion, with the aid of Shankly biographer Stephen Kelly.

Producer: Jolyon Jenkins

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2013.

THU 22:30 Micky Flanagan: What Chance Change? (b00sg13d)
1970s

Cockney geezer Micky Flanagan regales us with the story of his journey from tabloid to broadsheet; from the street party to the dinner party; from apples and pears to stocks and shares... Well you've got the idea.

Each episode focuses on a different decade of Micky's life. Micky regales us with stories from his life told through stand up comedy. In between, the programmes goes 'behind the scenes' with short interviews that give an insight into the stand up.

For starters, Micky talks about growing up in the East End in the 1970's. He chats to his school friends about their shared experiences of leaving with no qualifications to work at Billingsgate Fish Market. He also interviews Sociology Professor Paul Willis about his research on working class boys in a 1970's school.

Micky's transition from the mean streets of the East End, working as a Billingsgate Fish Porter to an entertainer living in the leafy lanes of Dulwich is a fascinating story, all the better for being told through jokes. The issue of class is a crucial theme in Micky's stand up. However it is framed less as "Do we now have a classless society?" and more as "Is it ok to ask for Tomato sauce in a fancy French restaurant?"

Written and performed by Micky Flanagan.

Producer: Tilusha Ghelani.

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in May 2010.

FRI 20:00 Six Degrees of Connection (b0717kvf)
Julia Hobsbawm investigates the idea, originating in social psychology, that we are all connected by only six links.

Is everyone in the world really connected by only six links?

A famous experiment by social psychologist Stanley Milgram in the 1960s claimed that it took on average only six steps for a message to pass between two strangers in America. Since then the idea has become part of popular culture. But is it true? And if so, does it matter?

Julia Hobsbawm investigates how social networks work, whether we should all pay more attention to our network connections, and whether governments can use social networks to promote - for instance - messages about health. Maybe, she discovers, it's not the six degrees of separation that matter, but the three degrees of influence.

Presenter: Julia Hobsbawm
Producer: Jolyon Jenkins

Back to Black

Amy Winehouse died in July 2011 aged just 27.

'Back to Black' - the title track of her second and final album - is a torch song to tragic love, addiction and loss.

People who loved her and her music talk about how she helped them cope with their own struggles.

Lesley Jamison is now a successful writer but at 27 she was an alcoholic. She stopped drinking the same year that Amy died. Lesley reflects on how her own life could have followed the same path had she gone further into the darkness or the black of drinking and self destruction.

Daisy Buchanan tells her story of addictive love and how Back to Black helped her break free. Umaru Saidu was a vulnerable teenager with mental health issues who lost a dear childhood friend when he was 17. He later trained at the Amy's Yard programme and is grateful for the inspiration she gave him.

As a young teenager Amy Charles too identified with the pain expressed in Back to Black and says it helped her deal with depression brought on by a spinal injury.

Donald Brackett is the author of Back to Black: Amy Winehouse's Only Masterpiece and believes performing the song may have become traumatic for her in the end as it forced her to relive the emotional pain.

Elizabeth Kesses was visiting her terminally ill father at the same hospital where Amy Winehouse was being treated. She recalls seeing her there and hoping she would recover. Sadly it was not to be. But these stories reveal a legacy that goes beyond the music.

Series about pieces of music with a powerful emotional impact.

FRI 21:00 The Curious Cases of Rutherford & Fry (m0010xpl)
Series 18

The Painless Heart

Why does my heart not ache after exercise? asks listener Keith. Rutherford and Fry explore how and why heart muscle cells are special.

Dr Mitch Lomax is a sports scientist at the University of Portsmouth. She helps actual Olympic swimmers get faster. She explains how most of the muscles attached to our skeletons work: Tiny fibres use small-scale cellular energy, which, when all these fibres work in concert, turns into visible muscular movement. Mitch also explains how the dreaded Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness, or DOMS, can hit, taking a stair-wincing 48-72 hours to peak after exercise.

But skeletal muscles turn out to be quite different to heart muscles, as consultant cardiologist Dr Rohin Francis explains. Heart cells are more efficient and don't get fatigued like skeletal muscle cells. They are extremely energetic and 'just want to beat'. He also explains that the sensory feedback from the heart muscles is different too. They have a different sort of nerve supply, with fewer sensory nerves, so that there is less chance of pain signals being sent to the brain.

However, heart cells' incredible abilities are counterbalanced by one Achilles-like flaw: They cannot easily heal. Professor Sanjay Sinha is a British Heart Foundation (BHF) Senior Research Fellow and a Professor in Cardiovascular Regenerative Medicine at the University of Cambridge. His job is to fix broken hearts and he explains to Adam how new research into stem cells could be used to fix normally irreparable heart cells.

Unaware of any of this, Lucy continues to plan the round-the-world yacht voyage that everyone has completely forgotten she is about to undertake.

Critical reaction to the first episode, originally broadcast in December 2020:
“The leads’ natural chemistry, plus David Quantick’s witty script… make for an enjoyable comedy with series potential” The Observer

“It’s as slick, dark and funny as one would expect – but surely this cannot be a one-off? The ending alone leaves us begging for a series” Radio Times
