SAT 03:15 Modern Morality Tales (b070j4h2)
Wrath by Roy Williams

Eve finds herself overcome with anger on the day that she is made redundant.

But does her anger necessarily have to have a destructive end?

Inspired by the medieval morality plays. Roy Williams presents a character whose anger at the inhuman nature of modern life moves her to an act of protest.

In medieval times allegorical plays such as 'Mankind' and 'Everyman' were used to warn audiences that how they lived in the present would affect their afterlife - whether they would end up in Hell, Purgatory or Heaven.

But in a secular age how do we deal with the nature of sins and virtues? Our attitude to good and evil is certainly less black and white. Is it bad to be proud, don't we deserve respect? Can't anger be used to promote change for the better and isn't envy what drives our materialistic lifestyle?

These five tales explore our attitudes to these questions through the character of 'Eve', a 21st-century Everywoman, played by Rebecca Front.

Jarvis Cocker

Pulp's singer and musician, Jarvis Cocker is castaway by Sue Lawley.

Jarvis formed the band Pulp in the late 1970s and says that as a gawky, self-conscious teenager he felt pop music did not properly inform him about the disappointments and miseries of growing up - and he was determined to write songs that included "the messy bits and the awkward, fumbling bits".

He had to wait more than a decade to find success - but Pulp went on to become one of the most popular bands of the 1990s, with hits including Do You Remember the First Time? Sorted For Es And Wizz and Common People.

The band's crowning glory was its performance of 'Common People' at the Glastonbury festival in 1995.

The following year, Jarvis Cocker made headlines again - this time the tabloid front pages after he invaded the stage while Michael Jackson was performing at the pop industry's annual awards ceremony. Fans were thrilled, but it marked the beginning of a difficult time in the singer's life.

Now he is married with a young son and living in Paris and has recently written songs for Nancy Sinatra and Marianne Faithfull as well as writing the music for the film Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire.

Mixtape 1 - Dakou

Radiolab is a Peabody-award-winning show about curiosity. Where sound illuminates ideas, and the boundaries blur between science, philosophy, and the human experience.

Radiolab Mixtape is a special 4 part series

Mixtape 1: Dakou - explores how musicians who took the damaged plastic scraps of Western music, changed the musical landscape of China.

Through the 1980s, the vast majority of people in China had never heard Western music, save for John Denver, the Carpenters, and a few other artists included on the hand-picked list of songs sanctioned by the Communist Party. But in the late 90s, a mysterious man named Professor Ye made a discovery at a plastic recycling center in Heping.

Radiolab talks to Chinese historians, music critics, and the musicians who took the damaged plastic scraps of Western music, changed the musical landscape of China, and reimagined rock and roll in ways we never could’ve imagined.

Squeeze (the A Side)

Glenn Tilbrook and Chris Difford talk about Squeeze's 1981 album, 'East Side Story'.

Series in which leading performers and songwriters talk about the album that made them or changed them.

Recorded in front of a live audience at the BBC's iconic Maida Vale Studios, each edition includes two episodes - the A-side and B-side.

In the A-side, Glenn and Chris talk to John Wilson.

'East Side Story' was originally intended as a four-sided double LP with each side using a different producer (Dave Edmunds, Nick Lowe, Paul McCartney and Elvis Costello). It was released in 1981 as a single LP with 14 songs. With it Squeeze moved away from their traditional ‘new wave’ sound to a more varied mix of genres that took in rockabilly, R&B, blue-eyed soul, Merseybeat, and psychedelia.

With tracks like Tempted, Is That Love, Messed Around and Labelled with Love (which was only on the album because eventual producer Elvis Costello persuaded Glenn Tilbrook it should be included) the album is packed with keen, precise, funny and sad lyrics about lovers, drunks, deadbeats and lonely working girls – or as Chris Difford describes them: ‘suburban short stories’.

In the B-side of the programme, it's the turn of the audience to ask the questions.

Producer: Paul Kobrak

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in December 2015.

TUE 05:00 HG Wells (b08fdkd1)
Ann Veronica

1. A Fresh Start

Spirited and fiercely intelligent, Ann Veronica is a 21st Century woman in an Edwardian Hobble skirt.

She runs away from her stiflingly conventional home and her domineering father to make a fresh start in London.

A lively and surprising story; not least because it's created by HG Wells.

The storytelling is witty and ironic and Ann Veronica caused a scandal in its time because of the feminist sensibilities of the heroine and also because of the affair Wells was having with Amber Reeves, the woman who inspired the novel's eponymous character.

This is a relatively unknown and unexpected novel by Wells. The Spectator described Ann Veronica as a "poisonous book..." Although unlikely to offend modern listeners, this novel addresses many feminist versus femininity issues that are still relevant today.

The novel deals with the early stages of what is arguably the most important social development of the 20th Century. the education and financial and sexual liberation of women. And the fact is that, nearly 100 years later, the problem of women who want to marry, have children and pursue a liberating career, is still not easy to solve.

Wells makes a good case for freer sexual relationships, but Amber Reeves - and later Rebecca West - were the ones whose lives were changed - by bearing and bringing up a child by him.

Dramatised by Ellen Dryden.

This time the focus of David’s sardonic wit and incisive social critiques:

* Unbuttoned

David Sedaris first shared his very particular world view having brought us The SantaLand Diaries back in 1996.

David has become one of America’s pre-eminent humour writers and, in 2019, was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

Ann Veronica

2. A Quest for Liberation

This witty and lively tale sees Ann Veronica living alone in London in her quest for liberation.

But it's an uphill struggle; she has to fight off the sexual advances of a so called friend, discovers the love of her life is married, and gets arrested and imprisoned for a suffragette raid on the House of Commons.

Tolkien: The Lost Recordings

Joss Ackland narrates a search through BBC archives for unheard gems from JRR Tolkien, as Oxford Academic Dr Stuart Lee discovers unbroadcast offcuts from an interview given by the author.

Tolkien gave the interview for a BBC film in 1968, but only a tiny part of it was used in the broadcast programme. It was one of only a handful of recorded interviews he gave, and was also to be his last.

Dr Lee’s search for the unbroadcast rushes takes him to the depths of the BBC film archives, and back to the making of the original film Tolkien in Oxford.

For the director Leslie Megahey, only 23 at the time, this was his first film, and the one that launched a prestigious career. The programme reunites him with three others - researcher Patrick O’Sullivan, Tolkien fan Michael Hebbert, and critic Valentine Cunningham who describes how he was brought in to be the voice of dissent challenging the burgeoning Tolkien cult spreading from America.

What emerges is a picture of a playful academic, whose fiction was little respected by adults at the time and looked down on as a lesser form of literature. But he is robustly defended by Professor Tom Shippey and remembered fondly by his colleague Dr Roger Highfield.

Stuart Lee presents the results of his search through the archives to Dr Dimitra Fimi who considers any new words from Tolkien’s mouth as ‘gold’.

While, for Dr Lee, the real dragon’s hoard is the privilege of hearing Tolkien in relaxed mode reflecting on his life as never before.

Lucy Porter: Back in the Family Way

Following her previous, very popular In the Family Way shows, Radio 4 favourite Lucy returns with another examination of domestic life, covering everything from the dramatic to the dreary.

This time, Lucy looks at the effects of the pandemic on our relationships with family, friends and neighbours. The last year has been hard on people who were separated from their nearest and dearest, but it’s also been no picnic for those who were locked up with their loved ones.

Home schooling, working from the kitchen table, zoom quizzes with cousins, clapping with the neighbours - Lucy explores all the things that have brought us together, while also driving us apart. We look forward to the year 2041 and ponder what they’ll make of it in the future.

Talented comedian and impressionist Luke Kempner is on hand again to help Lucy bring her thoughts to life. As always, he displays his range of comic voices, including an impressive impersonation of Lucy’s next door neighbour Yvonne.

Back In The Family Way was recorded at Lucy’s local village hall, with a socially distanced audience of her family, friends and neighbours. Let’s see if any of them are still speaking to her after this show.

JRR Tolkien, creator of The Hobbit

John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was born in Bloemfontein in 1892.

Orphaned before he was a teenager, he fought at the Somme in the First World War before going on to become one of the best-selling authors of all time.

Bilbo, Gandalf, Gollum, Frodo, Sauron - these are just a few of the famous characters he created for The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.

Nominating Tolkien - an Oxford University professor - is the popular historian, Niall Ferguson. He aims to rescue Tolkien from the hippies, who, he says, claimed Tolkien as their own.

"The fascinating thing to me about Tolkien is that his sensibility is so profoundly conservative - with a small 'c'. ...when you look at the man's politics, he was such a reactionary!"

Presenter Matthew Parris, who doesn't believe in elves or dwarves, is not so sure that the fantasy author deserves to be rescued.

With additional help and guidance from Malcolm Guite.

Niall Ferguson is senior fellow of the Hoover Institution and author of Empire: How Britain made the Modern World.

Producer: Ellie Richold

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in December 2021.

FRI 20:00 As The Curtain Falls (b07m7nph)
Marie-Louise Muir looks back on 25 years of New York's influential Signature Theatre company with founder Jim Houghton as he prepares to step aside as Artistic Director.

While not as famous as the writers and actors with whom he works, Jim has become a much-respected figure in New York theatre over the past three decades.

Signature Theatre started life in a tiny storefront in downtown Manhattan spurred on by Jim's mission to put the writer at the heart of everything the company did.

Signature was unique in its commitment to devote an entire season to the work of a living playwright and Jim has worked with some of the most important, and often under-appreciated, American writers of the past half century, including Romulus Linney, Edward Albee, Horton Foote, Adrienne Kennedy, Sam Shepard, Arthur Miller, Maria Irene Fornes, August Wilson and Tony Kushner.

A little-known 24 year old who earned his first professional pay cheque during the Edward Albee season in 1994, Hollywood actor Edward Norton has stayed loyal to the company, becoming their Board Chairman and working alongside Jim and others to raise the funds to build the $70,000,000 3-theatre space that opened on 42nd Street in 2012.

Marie-Louise Muir travelled to New York to speak with Jim Houghton as he prepared to mark the end of his tenure at Signature. They talked at length about his formative years, the ill health that has prompted his decision to move on, and the perhaps surprising career path of an undiagnosed dyslexic with severe reading problems who ended up spending 25 years championing writers and their words.

Featuring contributions from:

* Actors Edward Norton and Laura Linney
* New York Times chief theatre critic Ben Brantley.

Producer: Stan Ferguson

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in August 2016.

“The leads’ natural chemistry, plus David Quantick’s witty script… make for an enjoyable comedy with series potential” The Observer

“It’s as slick, dark and funny as one would expect – but surely this cannot be a one-off? The ending alone leaves us begging for a series” Radio Times

“French and Saunders sparkle with a magic that is so rarely heard in new radio comedies that I’d almost forgotten it was possible” Daily Telegraph
