A modern mudlark reveals her stories of finds buried in the mud of the River Thames.

This is history at its most earthy and tactile full of glimpses of the everyday lives of those who lived and worked near the river hundreds of years ago.

From mammoth teeth to Tudor shoes, via the mysterious abundance of garnets and the fragments of a Roman heating system, Lara brings us closer to the lives of the past by turning over the rubbish of the present to see what she can find.

Those inspired by the book to have a go themselves should be aware that anyone wishing to search the tidal Thames foreshore must hold a current foreshore permit from the Port of London Authority.

Childhood

The rest of this four-part series looks at Politics, The Human Body and Animals.

Using comic observation and personal anecdotes he explores each theme, examining how much (or how little) things have changed over his 60ish years.

It’s Andy’s thoughtful, social history, but packed with laughs.

Episode 1

A foggy seafront town where something’s coming from the water. An ancient cult, a stranger with a bandaged face and a body in a shallow grave. The podcast investigation continues.

Podcasters Matthew Heawood and Kennedy Fisher return and this time the story is Kennedy Fisher.

A simple investigation into the disappearance of a young man from a mental health facility has taken them from Rhode Island to Iraq, to the Suffolk countryside – as they realised that everything uncovered in season one threaded through to season two.

Towards the end of 'The Whisperer In Darkness,' the investigation turned inward as Kennedy discovered a possible family connection to the uncovered conspiracy. And evidence forces Heawood to question the veracity of Kennedy's account of her time in Iraq. As Kennedy heads off to Innsmouth, to look into her apparently spooky ancestry, Heawood is going to Iraq to answer the most disturbing of all questions: could Kennedy be a killer?

Both Kennedy and Heawood make life-changing discoveries as the two investigations come together and reach a gripping conclusion, just as the Coronavirus pandemic is sweeping the world.

Barnaby Kay and Jana Carpenter star in writer/director Julian Simpson’s H.P. Lovecraft-inspired universe.

Visitors are expected in Wadenbrook, and a revelation is long overdue.

Northamptonshire, let us be clear, is neither north, nor south nor in the Midlands. It floats somewhere between the three eyeing up the distinctiveness of each enviously.

TUE 21:45 The Shadow Over Innsmouth (m000v2t2)
Episode 2

Episode 2:

Episode 2

Every year since 2013, the poet, broadcaster and author Lemn Sissay has arranged a Christmas dinner for people aged 18-25 who have left the care system and have no one with whom to have Christmas dinner. No one to give presents or receive them. No-one on the other end of the cracker.

This is not a charity. It isn't even an organisation. It's a project Lemn undertook because he understands how it feels - at 18 he was released from a children's home and given an empty flat in Wigan, with no-one in the world who had known him for longer than a year.

Lemn Sissay’s Social Enterprise is a four-part series for BBC Radio 4, considering what these dinners have taught him about charity, social enterprise, and people, through stand-up, interview and poetry.

This week he explores the idea of food - with the help of Garry Lemon, the Policy Director of the charity The Trussell Trust, and comedians Alexander Bennett and Dan Cardwell.

THU 21:45 The Shadow Over Innsmouth (m000v2xl)
Episode 4

As Kennedy heads off to Innsmouth, to look into her apparently spooky ancestry, Heawood is going to Iraq to answer the most disturbing of all questions; could Kennedy be a killer?

Both Kennedy and Heawood make life-changing discoveries as the two investigations come together and reach a gripping conclusion, just as the Coronavirus pandemic is sweeping the world.

Series 2

Planes, Trains and Automobiles

Paul Sinha returns for a second series of his History Revision, the show that uncovers the fascinating stories that we've forgotten in our onward march of progress. In the last series we learned how Alexander Graham Bell did NOT invent the telephone, and that the World Cup final of 2014 could only have happened because of the 1415 invasion of Morocco.

In this episode, Paul asks "How did we get here?", quite literally, getting the studio audience to tell him how they got to the BBC Radio Theatre, and then regaling them with stories from the history of transport. From the area of London that became a Russian train station, to the man who revolutionised both the motor industry and the music charts, to the names of airports around the world, this programme about the world of planes, trains and automobiles will provide fascinating facts and surprising stories (unless you listen on a weekend, when a bus replacement service is in operation).

FRI 20:00 Did Douglas Get It Right? (b0557671)
In the year 2000, at the turn of the new millennium, Douglas Adams made a radio series offering a vision of the future that new technology would offer. He looked at the fast changing music scene, the coming of e-books, the future for broadcasting and made his predictions for what he described as 'extreme evolution'. But did he get it right?

Best known for 'The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy', Douglas Adams was a huge fan of new technology and predicted an exciting future for the 21st century. Sadly he did not live to see it, as he died aged 49 in 2001.

Mitch Benn takes on the challenge of seeing what Douglas got right, and what he got wrong. The radio series was called 'The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Future', and 15 years after its first broadcast we hear the voice of Douglas Adams, a passionate advocate for technology, once again.

The Martian Mission

What would it take for humans to live permanently on Mars? asks Martin in Weston-super-Mare, UK. The doctors dig into requirements and possibilities of a long-term Martian outpost.

We know that many missions to Mars have failed, for a range of reasons – malfunctions, crashes and even a mix-up between imperial and metric units. Getting to Mars – let alone decelerating from 30,000 miles per hour to a safe landing speed in about seven minutes – is not straightforward. Aerospace engineer Anita Sengupta helped land NASA’s Curiosity rover on Mars. She knows first-hand the challenges of putting a robot on the red planet.

But getting robots to Mars is an easier proposition than doing the same for humans. Even if we work out how to survive the radiation exposure on the eight-month journey and the pulverising descent, Mars’ surface isn’t easily habitable. Principal investigator for NASA’s Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution Mission (MAVEN) Bruce Jakosky describes the conditions on Mars: Freezing, with an atmosphere containing mostly carbon dioxide and very little water, and subject to annual global dust storms.

However, this isn’t deterring space agencies and private companies from researching the challenge. The European Space Agency and Russian Institute for Biomedical Problems focussed on finding out the physiological and psychological tolls by selecting six candidates to spend 520 days in a simulated spacecraft and landing module. Diego Urbina explains the personal challenge of taking part in the Mars500 experiment.

Some private company owners have gone even further. As well as making technology based on the current physical conditions, could those constraints themselves be altered? Could Mars be terraformed, or warmed, for easier human survival? Bruce Jakosky shares just what that would take – and compares these requirements with what’s actually available.

FRI 21:45 The Shadow Over Innsmouth (m000v3qy)
Episode 5

A foggy seafront town where something's coming from the water. An ancient cult, a stranger with a bandaged face and a body in a shallow grave. The story continues.

True-life mystery podcasters Matthew Heawood and Kennedy Fisher return and this time the story is Kennedy Fisher. A simple investigation into the disappearance of a young man from a mental health facility has taken them from Rhode Island to Iraq, to the Suffolk countryside – as they realised that everything uncovered in season one threaded through to season two. But towards the end of 'The Whisperer In Darkness', the investigation turned inward as Kennedy discovered a possible family connection to the uncovered conspiracy. And evidence forces Heawood to question Kennedy’s account of her time in Iraq. As Kennedy heads off to Innsmouth, to look into her apparently spooky ancestry, Heawood is going to Iraq to find an answer to the most disturbing of all questions; could Kennedy be a killer?

Both Heawood and Kennedy make life-changing discoveries as the two investigations come together, just as the Coronavirus pandemic is sweeping the world.

Heawood has picked up new and vital information from Melody Cartright. But can he believe her?

Episode 1

Les Kelly hosts a magazine show from hell.

Les is a cross between Jeremy Kyle and a slap in the face. He claims this is the only radio show for 'normal, decent people'. 'If you aren't decent, this is not the show for you,' says Les.

Les meets a father whose daughter needs a new kidney. Well, perhaps 'need' isn't quite the right word. She just wants one more kidney than all her friends.

Les also meets an expert on sanglanding. It's the dangerous new craze amongst young people - trouble is, no on knows what it is.

Kevin Bishop stars as Les Kelly.
