But behind the scenes of this movement, Masih has been fighting a painful personal battle.

SUN 06:00 Poetry Extra (m001k01b)
The Dam

Poet Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's poetry archive and selects The Dam.

Award-winning writer David Almond tells a timely true story about the flooding of Northumberland's Kielder Valley 40 years ago to make a dam, and the music and poetry which lie submerged within us all

This had been one of the wildest corners of the county - a place of farms and homesteads, a school and a stretch of railway. It had also been a place of music and song, dancing and legends. Now it was all to be flooded in order to create the largest artificial lake in the UK.

David tells of the father and daughter who visited the abandoned homes on the eve of the sealing of the dam, playing one last song before the diggers moved in, the valley was submerged and they were lost forever.

"He woke her early. 'Bring your fiddle,' he said. The day was dawning. Into the valley they walked....."

In a programme resonant with birdsong, running streams, sighing trees, leaping salmon and first-person testimonial, this is a story about the reservoirs of music, poetry and song in us all.

Featuring Northumbrian folk music, with additional fiddle-playing by Georgia Russelll, the programme culminates in a revelation by David about the identity of the protagonists in this haunting story.

Based around David Almond's picture book, The Dam, with illustrations by Levi Pinfold, published by Walker Studio.

With additional fiddle-playing by Georgia Russell

MON 20:00 The Moth Radio Hour (m0015bqz)
Series 12

It's the Little Things

True stories told live in the USA: Jenifer Hixson introduces tales full of questions, from pleas to childhood curiosity.

The Moth is an acclaimed not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the art and craft of storytelling based in the USA.

Since 1997, it has celebrated both the raconteur and the storytelling novice, who has lived through something extraordinary and yearns to share it. Originally formed by the writer George Dawes Green as an intimate gathering of friends on a porch in Georgia (where moths would flutter in through a hole in the screen), and then recreated in a New York City living room, The Moth quickly grew to produce immensely popular events at theatres and clubs around New York City and later around the USA, the UK and other parts of the world.

The Moth has presented more than 15,000 stories, told live and without notes, to standing-room-only crowds worldwide. The Moth podcast is downloaded over 27 million times a year.

Featuring true stories told live on stage without scripts, from the humorous to the heart-breaking.

The Moth Radio Hour is produced by Jay Allison and Atlantic Public Media in Woods Hole, Massachusetts and is distributed by the Public Radio Exchange.

First heard on PRX in 2020.

MON 21:00 Sneakernomics (p09fy32f)
6. Kingmaker

Sneakernomics is a close encounter with the visionaries, artisans and journeymen who’ve made, and been made, by trainers. We’ll follow in the footsteps of mavericks, hustlers and dreamers, and hear their tales of boom and bust, fame and infamy, hope and heartbreak.

Across nine episodes, Sneakernomics tells the extraordinary origin stories of some of the world’s biggest brands, and how sponsorship deals and celebrity culture redefined our relationship with products. It’s also a business story – how leisure has evolved into a multi-billion dollar industry; a sports story – how games became organised and grew into a global spectacle; and it’s a story of invention – how enthusiastic hobbyist-pioneers often took extraordinary risks that changed the course of sport and fashion.

The sneaker story is characterised by fierce competition and rivalry. We explore how the quest to be number one tore families and friendships apart and divided towns. Above all, this is the story of the people behind the shoes. What you’ll hear is a mix of interviews with many of the key individuals who’ve played their part in that extraordinary story, interlaced with moments of fiction inspired by their testimonies and our research.

Written and presented by Nicholas Smith, with 1Xtra presenter Ace. The drama is written by Al Smith.

MON 22:45 Charlotte and Lillian (m0009qwd)
Series 2

4. The Patient

Charlotte and Lillian are spending time together as part of a Befriend the Elderly scheme.

They may bicker about everything from signs of dementia to the appeal of Harry Styles, but underneath it’s clear they are two kindred spirits. Two selfish, self-absorbed spirits, but ones who mirror and rely on each other nonetheless.

Very nearly 30, Charlotte is still living at home with her parents and chronically unable to figure out what to do with her life. Beneath her attempt at do-gooding is barely disguised despair. She's terrified she is no good. Useless. Unloveable. She looks to Lillian to provide some meaning to her life - if she can help to improve Lillian’s life somehow, she’d feel a lot better about her own. And there’s all the kudos and social media likes that come with charity work - not to mention the lure of Lillian's large spare room.

Lillian returns from a stay in hospital to find Charlotte’s taken over the house, and is being her usual irritating self. Lillian is keen to get rid of her, but there’s just one problem - she can no longer ignore the fact she is getting older and needs help around the house.

Guess who’s ready to step up to the plate.

TUE 21:00 Sneakernomics (p09fy35c)
7. The Cri de Coeur

Series 4

Thursday's Child Is...

Multi-award winning comedian and author Mark Watson continues his probably doomed, but luckily funny quest to make sense of the human experience.

This series is about time - the days of the week, the stages of our existence - and the way we use it to make sense of things. We make our way through the working week, tonight considering Thursday. What does it mean to have 'far to go'? What was the lowpoint of Mark's career on the Waitrose checkout? And who does his mother consider 'a waste of space'?

Expect jokes, observations and interactions galore as Mark is aided, and sometimes obstructed, by the sardonic musical excellence of Flo & Joan. There's also a hand-picked comedy colleague each week - we are lucky tonight to have Sikisa.

The Ultimate Trip: Stanley Kubrick's Space Odyssey

Christopher Frayling explores the lasting influence of Stanley Kubrick and Arthur C Clarke's 1968 sci-fi masterpiece.

2001: A Space Odyssey was released into the world in April 1968. Puzzling, infuriating, inspiring and thrilling, it captivated audiences at the time and, 50 years on, continues to exert a powerful effect on our thinking about the present and the future.

This remarkable movie was the result of a synthesis of two very different visions.

Based on his own short story The Sentinel, it was written by British author Arthur C Clarke - a futurist of uncanny ability. The film director was Stanley Kubrick - an American working in the UK, whose previous works included gladiator epic, Spartacus and savage nuclear satire, Dr Strangelove.

Marketed as The Ultimate Trip, 2001 became an essential experience for younger audiences - many of whom saw it multiple times, and sometimes in an enhanced state of consciousness. But alongside its wildly psychedelic visions, 2001 also presented an extraordinarily convincing and intricate vision of future space travel.

Cultural historian and writer, Christopher Frayling travels back in time to the creation of 2001, hearing how organisations like NASA and IBM were enlisted to help Kubrick craft his vision.

And he speaks to scientists, critics and filmmakers to examine the film's enduring influence on science, design and popular culture.

Interviewees:

* Maggie Aderin-Pocock, space scientist
* Piers Bizony, science journalist
* Victoria Broackes, Senior Curator, V&A Museum
* Catherine Constable, Professor of Film Studies, Warwick University
* John Landis, film director
* Christopher Nolan, film director
* Georgina Orgill, Stanley Kubrick Archivist, University of the Arts London.

Producer: Jane Long

Series 4

4. Every Little Thing

Joanna Lumley and Roger Allam return in the fourth series of Jan Etherington’s award-winning comedy about a long-married couple in love with life and each other.

This week, it seems everything is making Roger grumpy, including a neighbour putting out his bin on the wrong day; a car alarm in the night and a shortage of streaky bacon. Roger claims he’s ‘normal’ because ‘most men live lives of quiet desperation’ but Joanna discovers it’s her fault he’s feeling fed up.

Conversations from a Long Marriage won the Voice of the Listener & Viewer Award for Best Radio Comedy in 2020. Also, nominated for a Writers Guild Award 2023.

Conversations from a Long Marriage is written by Jan Etherington and produced by Claire Jones. The production coordinator is Katie Baum, the studio engineer is Wilfredo Acosta and sound design is by Jon Calver. It is a BBC Studios Production.

WED 23:00 Lucy Porter In The Family Way… Again (m0004lbs)
Radio 4 favourite Lucy Porter returns with another examination of domestic life, covering everything from the dramatic to the dreary.

Following up last year's In the Family Way, Lucy looks at the question of legacy - what do we receive from our parents, and what do we pass on to our children?

Lucy hasn’t entirely been a winner in the genetic lottery. She has inherited dodgy knees, terrible teeth and a small third nipple. Her collection of family heirlooms consists of glass clowns, porcelain horses and offensive jam lids. Lucy does, however, want to instil in her own kids some of the values her parents taught her, including patience, courage and charity.

Talented comedian and impressionist Luke Kempner is on hand again to help Lucy illustrate the points she wants to make. As always, he displays his range of comic voices, including an impressive impersonation of Lucy’s Welsh great-grandmother.

In The Family Way... Again is a kind of love letter from Lucy to her mum, and a tender reflection on the things our parents do that drive us mad - things we’ll inevitably end up doing ourselves.

THU 21:00 Sneakernomics (p09fy38g)
9. Footnotes

THU 22:00 Meet David Sedaris (m001jszh)
Series 9

3. Pussytoes

"Gretchen reaches into her purse and pulls out a palm sized black book... I mistake it for a pocket Bible, super-abbreviated, with only the good parts included, and just as I wonder, Wait—what good parts? I realise it’s for addresses, that it is, true to its colour and size, my father’s Little Black Book."

This week there's just one essay, "Pussytoes" – Sedaris’s response to the death of his father, Lou, about whom David has written, to great acclaim and occasional disbelief, many times in his long career. His fathers decline in his later years had turned him from the monster recalled in earlier essays to a gentler person.

"One of the things I’d heard again and again at the church that morning was, “Lou was a real character.” A character is what you call a massively difficult person once he has reached the age of eighty-five. It’s what Hitler might have been labeled had he lived another three decades."

David Sedaris plays to packed houses across the world but loves coming back to his adopted home in the UK to record a selection of his most recent work for BBC Radio 4. “When I first started doing these shows, there were a lot of Americans in the room – but now there’s just a few,” he says. “It’s a great feeling to have built an audience, here in the UK.”

THU 22:30 Paul Sinha's History Revision (b04tlfsr)
Series 1

Music

Paul Sinha looks through all of human history and examines how we came to be where we are.

In this edition, he takes as his starting point Dolly Parton's standout performance at the 2014 Glastonbury Festival.

How did 120,000 people in a Somerset field, plus many millions more at home, come to be watching a 68-year-old woman from Tennessee on a Sunday afternoon?

The story inevitably takes in a Haitian rebellion, Slovenian hunting, Scottish whisky, Italian electronics and the American son of a Russian farmer who didn't like music. Because nothing and no-one exists in a vacuum.

Written and performed by Paul Sinha.

Producer: Ed Morrish.

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in December 2014.

Series 3

How I Proved God's Existence

The Godfather of British stand-up comedy returns to the live stage with his trials of modern life and his thoughts on the supernatural.

Being a good catholic boy, John was brought up respecting the infallibility of the CEO of the Universe. Yet as a modern man of the world, with a curious demeanour, he has spent a good amount of time debating the nature of deities and the apparent contradictions that God's existence has held with science since the enlightenment.

Thankfully, John Moloney will go down in history as the man who finally answered one of life's biggest mysteries, putting centuries of debate to rest, allowing the clergy and scientists to have a nice sit down and a cuppa without that nagging doubt in their minds.

God exists, and John can prove it - with gravy.

FRI 20:00 Food in the Frame (b055dzbm)
Baker and art student Ruby Tandoh explores the fascinating, evolving role played by food in art over the centuries.

Not many art installations have to be sealed in containers and driven deep into the desert because they smell so bad – but when art and food collide the results are often powerful and surprising. Dating back as far as Egyptian tomb art and the Ancient Greek and Roman civilisations, the use of food as a subject has allowed artists to demonstrate their virtuosity as well as deliver religious, metaphysical and political commentary.

Food historian Gillian Riley explains to baker and food writer Ruby Tandoh how paintings can offer invaluable clues about what was eaten and how it was eaten in numerous cultures. Ruby visits Tate Britain to look at key examples from the collection there with curator Alison Smith.

And learns from 20th century expert Janine Catalano about the way the likes of the Futurists and Surrealists took food from the canvas and turned it into an agent of anxiety and modernity – with examples including the Futurist Cookbook and Dali’s ‘Autumn Cannibalism’.

She finds out how the act of eating itself has more recently become an artistic pre-occupation, and speaks with contemporary artists Hayley Silverman and contemporary artist Caroline Hobkinson, who incorporates the power of noise to change our perception of flavour in her installation feasts.

Harvest Moon

It's a love song about growing old. Neil Young's Harvest Moon released in 1992 is a nod to the 1970s country rock.

It's loved by music blogger Alyson Young. It's also a grown up song about love says singer-songwriter Ricky Ross.

How do you make the magic last and how do you keep love alive? People tell their stories about what the song means to them: jazz singer Maureen Washington danced to the song with her late husband.

Amanda Legere played it to her premature baby daughter when she went to see her in the ICU. She knows the baby responded to that song. Mary Divine and her husband were serenaded on their wedding anniversary during lockdown. The whole neighbourhood came out to watch a teenage neighbour play Harvest Moon for them.

Margy Waller drove to work at the White House on the final days of Bill Clinton's Presidency listening to Harvest Moon because she needed to cry. For her it's a song about loss. She is still touched by it today during the pandemic in what she describes as another period of great loss.

Versions include Harvest Moon by

FRI 21:00 Val McDermid - The Distant Echo (b00v9qsr)
Four students stumble upon the body of a dead girl, in the snow, late one night. Twenty-five years later the police mount a 'cold case' review of the unsolved case, and the friends finally have an opportunity to clear their names once and for all. Until one of them dies in a suspicious house fire, and another in a burglary gone bad.

It seems someone is still pursuing their own brand of justice. If the remaining two are to avoid becoming the next victim they need to find out what really happened back there in the snow, themselves.
