Shirley Collins on Alan Lomax

The prolific and most significant of American song-hunters - Alan Lomax - is the choice of English folk singer Shirley Collins.

She's joined by singer-songwriter and activist Billy Bragg.

Lomax did whatever was necessary to preserve traditional music and take it to a wider audience. He was the first to record towering figures like Lead Belly, Muddy Waters and Woody Guthrie. He was instrumental in the revival of U.S. and UK folk.

Shirley Collins met Lomax in 1954, after he'd moved to England to avoid the U.S. McCarthy witch-hunt. She tells the story of how they fell in love and describes their recording trips around Europe and in America's Deep South, on the cusp of the civil rights movement.

Lomax's ambition was to give a voice to the voiceless, and that took him from fisherman shacks to prisons, farmyards to cotton mills. His steadfast drive to capture cultures before they disappeared resulted in a staggering amount of recordings we can listen to today, from gospel choirs to Cajun fiddling, country blues to calypsos and Haitian voodoo rituals.

Her new ranges are highly collectable and fly off the high street rails too.

Never one of the fashion world's flamboyant self promoters she has, none the less, a face known to millions - as a long time friend and muse to David Hockney she is the woman at the centre of his famous painting "Mr and Mrs Clark and Percy".

She wants her work to be relevant because and says "there's nothing worse than being out-dated. If that happens and I feel I'm past it, I'll stop".

As a veteran of 'restless nights in one-night cheap hotels', poet Paul Farley explores their creative possibilities.

Many years ago, Paul was stopping in the Euston Ibis in London and woke to find a message from a friend asking him to come over to the Savoy for drinks the night before.

He wondered whether it was the first time the two hotels had ever opened up a line of communication, and ever since has been fascinated by not just hotels but also the connections between them.

So Paul heads off to spend the night in three very different hotels - one a former prison, one a luxury London landmark, and one a hard-working provincial inn. He reflects on the times he's spent in hotels over the years, and the reasons he - like many other writers - has found them to be creative hotspots, a place at one remove from ordinary life in which inspiration can often be found.

Along the way he talks to staff, customers and other writers.

Paul explores the rich history of the hotel as a backdrop for numerous films, books and poems across all sorts of genres, from the horror of 'The Shining' and 'Psycho' to the comedy of 'The Grand Budapest Hotel' and the glamour of 'Top Hat' and 'Grand Hotel'.

Wendy Dagworthy

Kirsty Young's castaway this week is the fashion designer, Professor Wendy Dagworthy.

During her time as Head of Fashion at both Central St Martins and The Royal College of Art she has taught students who've gone on to great success – Stella McCartney, Erdem and Antonio Berardi among them. Her skill lies partly in understanding the significance of a well cut pattern or a nicely turned seam, but also the warp and weft of a notoriously fickle industry.

At just 23, she was the toast of the catwalks with her own label selling round the world and worn by the likes of Bryan Ferry, Boy George and Mick Jagger. Dubbed 'the high priestess of fashion', her creative talent, however, wasn't recession-proof and her business went under in the late 80's. Given that reinvention is the lifeblood of fashion it seems she was tailor made for a new direction; collecting her O.B.E. in 2011 for services to the fashion industry, she wore a Perspex hat designed by a former pupil.

She says, "we want students to take risks - like we did when we were younger. There were no set rules, there was no one to follow - you just did it yourself."

When Rock 'n' Roll began, it was music of rebellion, fighting against the strait-laced world of classical music. Then along came Jon Lord…

Lord combined the forces of Deep Purple with The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in ‘Concerto for Rock Group and Orchestra’. It premiered in 1969 at London’s Royal Albert Hall under the baton of Malcolm Arnold.

From that point until the arrival of Punk in the late seventies, rockers like The Nice, Emerson Lake and Palmer and Rick Wakeman embraced this hybrid genre. Rick Wakeman in particular became known for his elaborate stage shows which matched the ambition of his music.

Stuart Maconie talks to Rick Wakeman and Keith Emerson about the genre's excesses. We hear from Roy Wood about the early days of the Electric Light Orchestra. And the late Jon Lord, in his last ever recorded interview, talks about his passion for writing classical music, inspired by his early experiment with the genre.

Stuart Maconie feels some of it was actually very good. However, classical music critic, Ivan Hewett, is pleased that the genre was largely killed off by Punk. Although, in his view, there are better examples where classical and pop sensibilities are successfully combined, by the likes of Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead and Damon Albarn.

Good Luck Professor Spiegelhalter

Whether we believe in luck or not, we do use the word- a lot ! More as a figure of speech than an article of faith perhaps but some do pray for luck, others fantasize about it - and bad luck or misfortune is a staple of comedy.

Can Luck be said to exist as some force in our lives and if so, what is its nature? How have people thought about luck in the past and what's changed today? Can you bring good luck upon yourself - there's a school of thought these days that thinks you can without appealing to the divine or supernatural.

Professor Spiegelhalter, the Winton Professor for the Public Understanding of Risk at Cambridge University looks at notions of luck in gambling, traces the origins of how we think about fate and fortune, the religious and psychological view of luck and how the emergence of theory of probability changed our view of it.

He is convinced by the philosopher Angie Hobbs that there is one form of luck it is rational to believe in and by psychologist Richard Wiseman that there is a secular solution to bringing about good fortune in your life.

I've grown up watching my parents settle into life in the UK, and as a second generation British Asian I've grown up living between two cultures - overall it's been a rich and fulfilling experience for me. However, whenever I return to India I feel at times more 'English' than 'Indian'. I get frustrated with the pushing, the shoving and the constant peeping of horns. If I struggle when I'm on holiday here, what about those people who've chosen to make India their home, particularly if they're white?

Heather Chathley was a trainee nurse, he was a trainee Indian Doctor and they both met while at the Royal Victoria hospital in Belfast. When Heather went for her first holiday to India she ended up marrying her Doctor, and since 1979 the city of Moga in the Punjab has been home.

However, for Lindsay Singh - who has been in India for over thirteen years, she and her Indian husband have decided to see if they can now start a new life in the UK - but with her changed values and attitudes Lindsay's now not sure where they'll end up.

These are 'The Blonde Women of India'.

Prelude a l'Apres Midi d'un Faune by Debussy

Claude Debussy's Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun speaks to artists of different kinds.

Jamaican poet Ishion Hutchinson recalls hearing it through an open window in Kingston Jamaica and being mesmerised by its beauty, but not knowing what it was, setting off on a quest to find out and to write a poem that captured his feelings about the piece.

Babak Kazemi was training to be a doctor in his home city of Tehran when he heard it for the first time. The piece changed his life and led him to abandon his medical studies in Iran to move to the UK to become a professional conductor and composer. Artist Fiona Robinson specialises in interpreting Debussy's works on paper. She explains how she has been moved to visualise the Prelude, while Debussy's biographer Paul Roberts credits it with having changed classical music forever.

Katya Jezzard-Puyraud recalls how the music lifted her out of a difficult time after the birth of her first son and how she uses it now to help people with anxiety and stress to relax.

Author, Daniel Rosenthal, conjures up stories and scenes from five decades of a unique national institution:

‘The National Theatre with Daniel Rosenthal’ features some of the National's biggest names but also goes backstage to hear the unsung heroes working in wardrobe, as prop designers, puppet makers, stage managers and front of house, over the years.

With excerpts from BBC archive programmes, the National Theatre Archive and Daniel Rosenthal's own personal recordings.

In this episode, in the poorly situated but democratically-designed dressing rooms, Daniel explains why John Gielgud once missed his cue. On the Olivier Stage, he remembers the National's first artistic director Laurence Olivier and the less well known but much-loved Michael Bryant. We hear tales of audiences who drank and smoked through an 8½ hour Ken Campbell opus, who participated in a circle dance performed by a member of Fairport Convention.

We hear from Judi Dench, Ken Campbell, Richard Briers, playwright Howard Brenton, and artistic directors Laurence Olivier, Peter Hall, Richard Eyre, Nicholas Hytner and many more.

Comedian and conductor Rainer Hersch investigates how and why ‘tinkly’ musical sounds are so evocative of childhood, but can also have a creepier quality.

Starting with the toy piano, is there something inherent in the tinkly musical quality or is it just the kind of music we think that very small children like to hear?

The Schoenhut Piano Company still makes toy baby grands that are played seriously by concert pianists such as Xenia Pestova. She charts the history of the toy piano in serious music to Rainer – one that began with John Cage in 1948 - and explains the advantages and drawbacks over their grown up versions.

In Bristol, Rainer visits The Music Box Shop to talk to Richard Dean. He tells Rainer that music boxes of the 18th and 19th century were essentially portable mp3 players which could fit into pocket watches - the very first time that music could be ‘recorded’ and reproduced.

Victoria Williamson, a researcher and lecturer at the University of Sheffield whose research focuses on music and memory, suggests that the simplicity of these instruments means that the music available is in simple tonal forms, with limited notes in particular key and a simple melody – very similar to lullabies.

Rainer asks why this ‘tinkling’ music can suddenly become sinister. Richard Dean at the Music Box Shop – who have supplied boxes for props to the horror classic The Woman in Black - suggests it's the idea of a ‘luddite technology’ where no one is obviously playing the instrument. Victoria Williamson suggests that our emotional reaction is a battle between the quality of the sound and a learned reaction based on our memories.
