SAT 02:00 Wounds by Fergal Keane (b096nbjf)
5. The Legacy of War

After nearly three decades reporting conflict from all over the world for the BBC, Fergal Keane goes home to Ireland to tell a story that lies at the root of his fascination with war.

It's a family tale about how the ghosts of the past return to shape the present.

Fergal's grandmother, Hanna Purtill, her brother Mick and his friend Con Brosnan, along with many of their neighbours, found themselves caught up in the revolution that followed the 1916 Easter Rising. They took up guns to fight the British Empire and create an independent Ireland.

Many thousands of people took part in the War of Independence and the Civil War that followed. Whatever side they chose, all were changed in some way by the costs of violence. Fergal uses the experiences of his ancestral homeland in north Kerry to examine why people will kill for a cause and how the act of killing reverberates through the generations.

In the final episode, Fergal looks back on his grandparents' generation to examine the cost and legacy of war in Ireland. He reflects on how the wounds of the past shaped the island on which he grew up:

"I look back on my grandparents' generation and see a people exhausted and traumatised by conflict."

Abridged by Anna Magnusson.

Producer: Pippa Vaughan

SAT 02:15 Charlotte Brontë in Babylon by Charlotte Cory (b073b18t)
Episode 5

Charlotte Brontë arrives to an awkward reception in the Smith household.

It seems her hosts are not at all pleased with their depiction in Charlotte's new novel Villette.

The last of five momentous visits Charlotte Brontë made to the capital in the course of her short-lived but meteoric literary career.

These trips chart the story of her relationship with her young publisher (and his watchful, horrified Mama), Charlotte's wide-eyed enthusiasm at visiting the place of her childhood dreams at long last and being lionized as a writer by readers.

We see her difficult relationships with other authors and critics - and then the gradual disillusionment setting in as this intense, painfully honest and gauche Yorkshire novelist gradually acquires self-knowledge and a clear-eyed view of the cruel and shallow fashionable literary world she had long aspired to be part of.

Written by Charlotte Cory.

Series 2

Tina Turner's Dancer

Andrew McGibbon talks to Anne Behringer, Tina Turner's dancer in her touring band at the height of her fame as a solo stage performer during the 1990s.

Tina Turner remains one of the greatest R'n'B singers of the 20th and 21st centuries. Her partnership with Ike Turner produced one of the most electrifying live acts in the 1960s. After her split with abusive husband Ike, her career revived in the 1980s. The spectacle of Live Aid and the explosion of corporate CD rock in that decade led Tina to an astonishing level of global success in sales and on stage. It made her an international star and, critically, a universal performer, appealing to both black and white audiences.

Anne Behringer was born into a liberal New England family brought up to believe that everybody was equal regardless of tribe, colour and religion.

Anne was also a serial dancer from a very early age - almost, it seems, since she could walk.

During the most significant time in Tina Turner's career, Anne, having recovered from major drug and alcohol abuse, was then offered work on Tina's world tour. This meant exposure to the drugs and alcohol all over again.

Could Anne cope with being on a world tour, a dry singer in a world surrounded by temptation?

She went on to set up the internationally renowned Promises chain of rehabs. But, as Tina's white dancer in a US tour, she experienced first hand the racism still alive in America's deep south.

Written and presented by Andrew McGibbon.

Producers: Nick Romero and Louise Morris

A Curtains for Radio production for BBC Radio 4, first broadcast in September 2015.

Series 1

Art with Phill Jupitus

Susan Calman is the least relaxed person she knows.

She has no down time, no hobbies (unless you count dressing up your cats in silly outfits) and her idea of relaxation is to play Grand Theft Auto, an hour into which she is in a murderous rage with sky high blood pressure. Her wife had to threaten to divorce her to make her go on holiday last year. Her first for four years. But she's been told by the same long-suffering wife, that unless she finds a way to switch off, and soon, she's going to be unbearable.

So Susan is going to look at her options and try to immerse herself in the pursuits that her friends find relaxing, to find her inner zen and outer tranquillity. Each week she will ditch the old Susan Calman and attempt to find the new Susan Calm, in a typically British leisure pursuit.

This time, she visits the Scottish National Portrait Gallery with Phill Jupitus.

Keep Calman Carry On is an audience stand up show in which Susan reports on how successful she's been - both at relaxing and at the pursuit itself - as well as playing in and discussing a handful of illustrative clips from her efforts.

It's an attempt to find out how people find solace or sanctuary in these worlds and how Susan can negotiate her own place in them.

Fashion Designers

Stella McCartney

From The Beatles to Nirvana.

Fashion designer Stella McCartney shares her castaway choices with Kirsty Young

Born the middle child of Paul and Linda McCartney, Stella's early years were a paradox: she would either spend her days riding ponies, sharing one of two bedrooms with her sisters in a farmhouse, and generally mucking around in the countryside - or touring the world with her parents' band Wings and spending time in the company of stars such as David Bowie and Iggy Pop.

Amid the tours and travelling, she believes her parents offered her a vital childhood gift: normality. Stella attended the local school and went on to win a place at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design to study fashion design. Two years after a graduation show that made the headlines because the clothes were modelled by Stella's friends Kate Moss, Yasmin Le Bon and Naomi Campbell, she landed the job of Creative Director at the French fashion house Chloé. During her four years there, she transformed its fortunes.

In 2001, she set up her own label in a joint venture with Gucci. Throughout her career, she has never used leather, fur, feathers or animal skins. She now operates 51 freestanding stores in locations including Manhattan, Mayfair, and Milan, and her collections are distributed through shops in over 70 countries.

Her signature style is described as combining sharp tailoring - learned in Savile Row where she would spend her evenings whilst at Saint Martins - with a sexy femininity. She has also designed all the outfits for Team GB for the past two Olympics. She has four children with her husband, Alasdhair Willis.

Stella has won numerous awards including the British Fashion Council's Designer of the Year and Brand of the Year as well as Designer of the Year and Brand of the Year at the British Fashion Awards. She received an OBE in 2013 and a CBE in June 2022.

Cuckoo

The Cuckoo is one of the iconic brood parasites of the world - the bird that cons another species into taking its egg as its own and rears the chick to fledging.

In the single frame of the Cuckoo you have a long distance migrant, travelling from Africa to breeding grounds in the temperate north, and back again.

The Cuckoo does not raise its own chick and across a range of Cuckoo individuals, they parasitise several species of bird - all much smaller than they are.

Sir David Attenborough explores the world of the Cuckoo and not only marvels at their natural history but tells the story of how a wildlife cameraman resolved a scientific mystery - and how the Cuckoo itself harbours yet more secrets to science and natural history.

Adrian is still infatuated with his childhood sweetheart Pandora and is living in her box room in Oxford. Already in possession of a husband and a boyfriend, and sick of his attentions, Pandora recommends a therapist to help Adrian move on.

Unfulfilled by his job at the Department of the Environment, Adrian’s aspirations to become a poet and author are undimmed. Whilst working on his first novel, ‘Lo! The Flat Hills of my Homeland’, he is plagued by the literary success of his old nemesis, Barry Kent.

Adrian struggles to understand why he is so unsuccessful with women but his perseverance eventually pays off. How the female brain works remains a mystery to him, however.

As he continues to battle valiantly with the slings and arrows that life throws at him, Adrian starts to feel less of an outsider and more at ease with himself.

Charlie Connelly unravels the celebrity and the mythology that surrounds WG Grace, to look for the man beneath the austere Victorian veneer.

WG Grace died in 1915, but he still looms over the sport of cricket like no other player. He was arguably the most famous man of the late Victorian era, a true celebrity with an appeal that spanned the class system and reached across the British Empire.

Charlie Connelly comes across WG Grace in the last years of the great batsman's life, as his sporting career ends and his form begins to fade.

Faced with great personal tragedies, and distressed by the slaughter of the First World War, Grace emerges as a complex and troubled man, a long way from the stoical buttoned up Victorian that is so often portrayed.

MON 14:00 The History of Brazil Is Round (b044j7ml)
1. Futebol Nation

David Goldblatt tells the story of Brazil through its abiding passion for the game of football, a game that has both shaped and been shaped by the dreams of generations of Brazilians.

This opening episode explores the history when in 1934, despite over a hundred years of Brazilian independence and nearly half a century as republic, poet Carlos Drummond de Andrade was still asking “Are there any Brazilians?”

The authoritarian regime of Getullio Varags which would rule the country from 1930 to 1945, and create the institutional structures of the modern Brazilian nation was asking the same question. Spared the horrors of industrial war, Brazil had no martial tradition from which to invent itself. Given the very low levels of literacy, a national press and literary culture were equally ineffective.

For most of the 20th century the nation’s intelligentsia had thought that Brazil might be a new white Europe in the tropics, but as the nation’s rapidly expanding cities filled with black, mulatto and indigenous Brazilians this simply did not make sense.

Brazil’s unique music, dance and religious moment reflected its real ethnic mix, but none could capture a sense of modernity or provide a source of international triumph.

In football and in the World Cup above all, Brazil would find both.

Singing Together

Singing Together was the long-running BBC Schools radio programme which got generations of children singing.

Jarvis Cocker sets out on a musical journey to trace its history.

He uncovers the stories of those who made the programme, listened as children, and used it in their classrooms. Together they remember Monday mornings at 11am, when pupils up and down the country opened their song books and gathered round as teachers wheeled out their classroom radios.

He delves into the archive to uncover the origins of the programme, hearing the first presenter, Herbert Wiseman, describe how he started the series at the outbreak of the Second World War as a way of reaching out to children at a time when many had been evacuated. Wartime teacher Brenda Jenkins, who used Singing Together with her class of evacuees, remembers how 'singing always helped'

Jarvis explores the power of singing to bringing people together. He also uncovers the origins of the folk songs used in the programme and traces how it changed though the 1960s and 70's, opening up to musical traditions from around the world.

He reflects on the impact of the long running series – which gave many their first introduction to folk heritage- with award winning musician Eliza Carthy.

And he asks why recordings of this hugely popular series were not preserved for posterity. Only a handful of episodes survive in the BBC archive but, with the help of a small community of collectors, he sets out to find some of the missing episodes.

TUE 14:00 The History of Brazil Is Round (b044jk5t)
2. Serious Play

David Goldblatt continues to unravel the story of Brazil through its abiding passion for football.

The 1950's saw Brazilian football capture both the world's imagination and shape the hopes and dreams of modern Brazil.

In 1955 Brazil's new president offered the nation “Fifty years progress in five” and almost achieved it as Brazil boomed, industrialised and urbanized. The development of Brasilia captured the imagination at home and abroad. So too did the 'Joga Bonito' of the yellow shirt's of Brazil's Selecoa. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Brazilian football matched Brasilia’s global impact and paralleled its hybrid aesthetics. Brazil won the World Cup twice and did so with the spellbinding talents of the two most cherished players of the century: Pele and Garrincha.

Serious play requires serious organization. In 1958, Brazil acquired this in the tall, imperious shape of Joao Havelange, President of the Football Federation and the man in charge of Brazil’s 1958 World Cup campaign. Havelange brought a new level of professionalism to Brazilian football. The squad underwent extensive medical checks at Rio’s leading hospitals which revealed a catalogue of disease and long-term malnutrition. Almost the entire squad had intestinal parasites, some had syphilis, others were anaemic. Over 300 teeth were extracted from the players’ mouths. Epidemiologically, Brazil ’58 were a team of the people.

In the final they faced hosts Sweden and though Brazil went one nil down early in the game, they gave an untroubled, commanding performance of inventive football that saw them win 5-2. The Times wrote ' They showed football as a different conception; they killed the white skidding ball as if it were a lump of cotton wool. 'Everyone loved Brazil, even the defeated Swedes- the dream nation of neutrals around the globe.

They won the next World Cup with the same beautiful ease. It is hard to underestimate the importance of these two footballing triumphs. Brazil had won, not once but twice; and they didn’t just win, they won in their own style. Brazil was the football nation.

But could the game sustain the dreams of millions in the years to come?

Producer: Mark Burman.

Composer Debbie Wiseman explores the world of the song lyricist.

Providing a rare window into an age-old industry, she delves into the processes of collaboration between composer and lyricist.

She begins by presenting a standard song melody she has written especially for this programme, to lyricists Don Black and Gary Osborne who then work on this brand new song totally independent of each other.

Don is famed for many songs including Diamonds Are For Ever, Born Free and Thunderball, while Gary has regularly collaborated with artists such as Elton John, Cliff Richard and Alice Cooper.

What follows is an opportunity to see how different lyricists from differing backgrounds work, and to uncover the kind of problems they encounter along the way.

The results from each lyricist will be revealed, including a performance by Mica Paris.

3. Playing the Hardline

David Goldblatt continues his exploration of the history of Brazil through its passion for football.

The Junta that came to power in 1964 purged Congress and the senior civil service. Political parties were dissolved.

At first football’s only place on the government’s agenda was as a source of unpaid taxes. Yet by 1969, when the Junta's presidential successor General Costa e Silva, was dying of a stroke, the highest circles in government were pondering if they should announce his illness prior to Brazil’s last qualifying game for the 1970 World Cup.

Afraid how the news would affect the political mood of the crowd and the performance of the team. By then the dictatorship had faced an outbreak of protest and responded with a massive backlash. Censorship of the media was intensified. The security services arrested and tortured thousands of opponents.

Congress was effectively closed down. The legitimacy of the regime came to rest on supercharged economic growth and a grandiose nationalism that relied on football for its successes.

4. Magic and Dreams Are Dead

David Goldblatt unravels more of the history of Brazil through its obsession with football.

In the first half of the 20th Century, the beautiful game had helped define the shimmering promise and possibilities of this vast nation. But now, after years of dictatorship, rampant inflation and corruption could the bewitching promise of the ball revive a nation?

In 1994, 24 years since they had last won, Brazil went to the World Cup under coach under Carlos Alberto Parreira:

“We will play in the way modern football demands. Magic and dreams are finished in football. We have to combine technique and efficiency.”

Magic and dreams looked finished everywhere in Brazilian society in the 1990s. In the years after the end of military rule Brazil began to repair the damage wrought by the dictatorship. Inflation was finally brought under control, but Brazil endured two decades of slow growth, widespread poverty and rising inequality, and a crime wave to match. Brazilian democracy was consolidated and the military seemingly neutered, but it was a highly dysfunctional polity in many ways.

Pragmatism and realism could get one elected, they could even win a World Cup, but they came at a cost. In football and politics, legitimacy came to rest on results alone: rouba mas faz – It’s ok to steal if you get things done.

FRI 15:30 Owl Sense by Miriam Darlington (Omnibus) (b09rwg3w)
In the Chauvet Caves of southern France is the oldest known depiction of an owl in the world – dating back 36,000 years.

It was discovered in 1994 by a group of cavers.

Fascinatingly, this closely observed bird is drawn from behind, but with its head swivelled backwards 180 degrees, to meet the gaze of people walking towards it.

Humans have long been captivated by owls - as a predator, messenger, emblem of wisdom, something pretty to print on a tote bag or portent of doom.

Author Miriam Darlington sets out to tell a new story about owls. In her watching and deep listening to the natural world, she cleaves myth from reality and will change the way you think of this magnificent creature.

We meet Murray, the teaching owl, the fragile barn owl, the ghost like qualities of a tawny owl, the small but feisty little owl and long eared owls.

Omnibus of five parts abridged by Pete Nichols.

Read by Teresa Gallagher.

FRI 21:00 Soul Music (b03kqf04)
Series 17

Can't Take My Eyes Off You

Few songs can claim to be - quite literally - as far reaching as the 1967 classic 'Can't Take My Eyes off You'. In this edition of Radio 4's 'Soul Music', we hear from former astronaut Christopher Ferguson who heard this song as an early morning wake-up call aboard the space shuttle Endeavour. And from mum of two Michelle Noakes who sang this classic piece to the baby she was told she may never be able to carry. We also hear from the honeymoon couple whose marriage proposal began with a hundred strong 'flash mob' performance of this track and from Frankie Valli himself, who reflects on one of the most moving performances he ever gave when he sang 'Can't Take My Eyes off You' to a crowd of recently returned Vietnam Veterans. DJ Mark Radcliff recalls the many artists since Valli that have covered this song (not least his mum as she sang along to the Andy Williams version) and composer Bob Gaudio tells us how this now universally famous piece of music began life in a room over looking Central Park with a melody originally penned for a children's nursery rhyme.

Producer: Nicola Humphries.
