He also talks about how he wants to be like his dad; a gentleman, a good father and someone with a lot of strength.

The actor explains how he misses his father, "the stories can go on and on about my father, and I can spend a whole lifetime talking about my dad. And tell you how he has had such a major impression on my life and I really do miss him".

But she’s hopeful that, as long as we’re on the same page (and that page isn’t 3), there’s scope for great strides forward.

SAT 02:30 Eddie Goes Country (b01p2w7d)
Eddie Mair has harboured a secret.

But no more - it's a lifelong love of Country music. He wants to know why these three chord melodramas call him and many of his fellow Celts.

While, to the casual listener, Country is often regarded as a twang of twee tunes and lachrymose lyrics for the permanently melancholic, Eddie suggests that it is actually a 'complex state of mind'. He considers the accessible merits of the music and discovers the roots of Country.

Returning to Scotland, Eddie attends the Celtic Connections Music Festival in Glasgow. Here he compares notes, likes and dislikes with fellow broadcaster and Country aficionado Ricky Ross, along with singers Eleanor McEvoy and Dick Gaughan.

On hand to explain the 18th century Scots/Irish exodus to America and Canada is emigration historian Professor James Hunter. And providing a master class on the Celtic musical lineage detected in contemporary Country Music is musicologist Dr. Katherine Campbell from Edinburgh University.

And for the first time, Eddie will reveal where his musical devotion took root. It began on the Sabbath in a yellow Triumph PI. That almost sounds like the beginning of a Country song.

SAT 07:30 Great Lives (b09jd67j)
Series 44

Louise Richardson on Daniel O'Connell

On a field outside Dublin, Daniel O'Connell met and shot a former royal marine in a duel.

John d'Esterre had been outraged when O'Connell, the later hero of Catholic emancipation, described the mainly Protestant Dublin corporation as a 'beggarly corporation'. O'Connell later claimed that he had practised with two pistols every week, knowing that one day he would be challenged to a duel.

Nominating O'Connell is the vice chancellor of Oxford and terrorism expert Louise Richardson.

It's not the violence of the duel that appeals, but O'Connell's revolutionary way of marshalling huge support for his causes, which were always conducted in a remarkably non-violent way. "The altar of liberty totters when it is cemented only with blood," O'Connell said. He took his seat in Westminster in 1830 and thereafter fought for the abolition of slavery and the repeal of the union, a cause in which he failed.

Patrick Geoghegan, O'Connell's biographer and special advisor to the new Irish prime minister, adds the colour to a truly extraordinary and important life.

SAT 13:00 Archive on 4 (b0b9v0tq)
Could the PM Have a Brummie Accent?

BBC Political Correspondent, Chris Mason, examines the changing accents of politics and politics of accents, with help from politicians, language experts and an impersonator.

The programme examines the ways that stereotypes and prejudices can be loaded onto accents, how the voting public responds to different voices, and what politicians can do and have done about it all.

With the help of the archive, former Labour leader Neil Kinnock and former Conservative minister Edwina Currie reflect on the political soundtrack of their lifetimes. How have their voices, those of their contemporaries and the sound of the national political conversation changed?

How is it possible and when it is sensible to change your accent?

Chris is joined by Steve Nallon, who impersonated Margaret Thatcher on ITV's Spitting Image, to listen back to her as a new backbencher and later as Prime Minister.

And what about the sound of political reporting?

The archive allows the former Today Programme presenter Jack Di Manio to give Chris - a son of the Yorkshire dales - a lesson in speaking 'properly'.

So are we really becoming more open minded about this aspect of political communication? Chris hears from two MPs who say they still struggle to be understood in the Commons today.

Then Brian Gulliver arrived and meant that our hero could be lost in a fictional world without the need for any sci-fi.

Producer: Steven Canny

SUN 06:00 Born Lippy by Jo Brand (Omnibus) (m0001h0d)
Jo Brand turns advice giver in a typically irreverent guide to life.

She says she's messed up enough times to feel confident she has no wisdom to offer anyone. But who cares? She's going to do it anyway.

Once upon a (very, very) long time ago Jo Brand was what you might describe as "a nice little girl". Of course, that was before the values of cynicism, misogyny and the societal expectation that Jo would be thin, feminine and demure sent her off down Arsey Avenue.

The plot thickened when, due to a complicated fusion of hormones, horrible family dynamics and a no-good boyfriend they hated, Jo ended up leaving home at 16.

Now she's considerably further along life's inevitable journey and, in this memoir, she reveals a side of herself that we don’t normally hear - the things she wishes she'd known and the things she hopes for the future. As you’d expect, she pulls no punches.

Jo begins with the wisdom (or otherwise) of giving advice, and guidance on how to survive your family. Drawing on her own battlefield experiences, she suggests the best attitude to love and friendship and finding your way in the world while being kind and being different.

Whether it was her rebellious teenage years or moving from a nursing career to the stand-up comedy circuit, Jo knows that it’s hard to find out who and what you are, particularly in gaining equality for both sexes.

But she’s hopeful, as long as we’re on the same page (and that page isn’t 3), that there’s scope for great strides forward.

Omnibus of five parts written and read by Jo Brand.

Abridged and produced by Pippa Vaughan.

A Loftus Media production for BBC Radio 4, first broadcast in December 2018.

Skye and Dexter return in this heart-breaking, heart-warming story by Amanda Whittington.

Skye is now 16 and Dexter seven. They live in Gainsborough's south-west ward in Lincolnshire, at the neglected sharp-end of some very alarming and surprising statistics regarding deprivation in England's rural/urban margins.

Skye narrates, inviting us into her ordinary, extraordinary life: a dysfunctional world. We may not always share her beliefs or like what she does but we care. She has always had to look after Dex because their alcoholic Mum, Jak, can't.

But now Skye's looking outward too, attempting to pull away from the family, to explore more adult issues, including her own sexual orientation. To build her own life.

But Dexter too has his obsessions and challenges, caused in part by foetal alcohol syndrome. If Skye breaks away, what will happen to him?

Amanda Whittington's heart-breakingly brave, funny and beautiful story exploring the issue of neglect.

Skye and Dexter's story is developed through close collaboration with BBC Children in Need, who help us with their research resources and expertise.

It is also inspired by ongoing voluntary work in Gainsborough. On the recommendation of CinN, we have begun a longer-term partnership with SAYiT, a Sheffield-based charity they fund that provides practical support around LGBT+ life, sexual health, HIV and mental wellbeing.

SUN 10:00 Desert Island Discs Revisited (m0013gvy)
Singers 2

Lily Allen

From Etta James to The Stone Roses.

Singer-songwriter Lily Allen shares her castaway choices with Kirsty Young.

After first dipping her toe in musical waters by releasing her demos on social media, by 2014 Lily was one of the headline acts at Glastonbury.

But her first appearance at the festival was actually as a new-born baby carried through the crowd in swaddling. Indeed, she was as good as baptised at the font of celebrity culture – her dad, Keith, is an actor and writer, her mum, Alison, is an award-winning film producer - for a time her step-dad was Harry Enfield.

So, it seems almost inevitable that she's ended up at the centre of a media-saturated life.

Except that in all likelihood she would have been propelled there entirely by her own endeavours: her lyrics are witty and wise-ass and capture concisely what it is to be a savvy, young woman today.

She says, "the only thing I can do really is write lyrics and the only way I know how to do that is by being honest and doing it with integrity because otherwise there's no point".

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in June 2014.

Bringing the science we have acoustic engineer and saxophone player Trevor Cox. Plus materials expert Zoe Laughlin demonstrates a selection of her unusual musical creations, including a lead bugle.

Producer: Michelle Martin

SUN 11:00 Radiolab (m000dhmy)
Series 6

Apologetical

Radiolab explores a sea of sorry-not-sorries - what does it truly mean to make amends? With Jad Abumrad and Robert Krulwich.

How do you fix a word that’s broken? A word we need when we bump into someone on the street, or break someone’s heart. In our increasingly disconnected secular world, “sorry” has been stretched and twisted, and in some cases weaponised. But it’s also one of the only ways we have to piece together a sense of shared values and beliefs. Through today's sea of sorry-not-sorries, empty apologies, and just straight up non-apologies, we wonder what it looks like to make amends.

Radiolab is a Peabody-award winning show about curiosity. Where sound illuminates ideas, and the boundaries blur between science, philosophy, and the human experience.

Hosts Jad Abumrad and Robert Krulwich investigate a strange world.

From WNYC. First broadcast on public radio in the USA in 2018.

SUN 12:00 Poetry Extra (m0013hh3)
Suckers! Poet and Parasite

Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's poetry archive and chooses Suckers! Poet and Parasite, as poet Paul Farley explores the itchy relationship between poets and blood-sucking parasites.

Parasites are not an obvious subject matter for poetry, but in fact there are a surprising number of poems about these miniature blood-suckers. From Donne's 'The Flea', to Rimbaud's 'Lice Hunters' and D.H. Lawrence's 'Mosquito', it seems that a number of prominent poets have been fascinated by the notion of blood-sucking and by the uncomfortable relationship between man and parasite.

Paul Farley considers this long relationship between poets and parasites as he looks for leeches in the pools of Dungeness, visits the mosquito colonies cultivated under Gower Street in London and marvels at the strange beauty of the flea specimens in the Rothschild Collection of Fleas at the Natural History Museum.

In the company of entomologists and of fellow poets, Susan Wicks, Antony Dunn and Sarah Howe, Paul examines both classic and contemporary poems to discover how parasites have been portrayed - and transformed - in verse.

Produced by Emma Harding

SUN 13:00 Owl Sense by Miriam Darlington (Omnibus) (b09rwg3w)
In the Chauvet Caves of southern France is the oldest known depiction of an owl in the world – dating back 36,000 years. It was discovered in 1994 by a group of cavers.

Fascinatingly, this closely observed bird is drawn from behind, but with its head swivelled backwards 180 degrees, to meet the gaze of people walking towards it.

Humans have long been captivated by owls - as a predator, messenger, emblem of wisdom, something pretty to print on a tote bag or portent of doom.

Author Miriam Darlington sets out to tell a new story about owls. In her watching and deep listening to the natural world, she cleaves myth from reality and will change the way you think of this magnificent creature.

We meet Murray, the teaching owl, the fragile barn owl, the ghost like qualities of a tawny owl, the small but feisty little owl and long eared owls.

Episode 1

Skye is anxious and distracted, with nothing to do. She's usually on Dexter-duty, a full time job: looking after an eight-year-old with special needs. But Dexter's going away. For four nights. To stay with his dad.

Skye and Dexter return in this heart-breaking, heart-warming story, which won the 2016 Audio Drama Award for Best Serial, a Special Commendation in Best Actress category for Sydney Wade as Skye in 2019, and was runner up in Best Serial category in 2020.

Skye is seventeen and Dexter eight. They live in Gainsborough in Lincolnshire, where standing out as different doesn't always end well. Skye narrates, inviting us into her ordinary, extraordinary life: a dysfunctional world. There's the fall-out from Covid (you try home-schooling an eight-year-old with no laptop or Wi-Fi), and Jak's crazy attempts at 'Truth-Seeking'. Skye can't stop thinking about Scarlett, the girl she met last year, who left town. But Aiden Hardy is still around and he's got a thing for Skye. She has always had to look after Dex because their alcoholic mum Jak can't. But maybe it's Dexter who's kept Skye going, not the other way round. How will she survive without him?

Skye and Dexter's story is developed through close collaboration with BBC Children in Need and one of the projects they help fund, SAYiT, a Sheffield-based charity that provides practical support around LGBT+ life, sexual health, HIV and mental wellbeing. It is also inspired by on-going voluntary work in Gainsborough.

Joe v Max

Bonnie Greer tells the story of one of the most famous sporting contests of all time - a boxing match in June 1938 between the American Joe Louis and the German Max Schmeling. The fight took on massive international, social and cultural significance and millions of people around the globe listened to the contest on their radios, making it the largest radio event in history.

Schmeling had shocked the world two years earlier when he defeated Louis and became the toast of Germany, with Hitler and Goebbels among his fans. A rematch was inevitable. For the first time, most of white America was behind a black fighter and Jews in the US and Europe, all too aware of the Nazi threat, were also cheering Louis.

With the world on the brink of war, it was projected as a contest between different social and racial ideals, a showdown between democracy and totalitarianism.

President Roosevelt told Louis, "Joe we need muscles like yours to defeat Germany."

Episode 2

Four nights away from each other. It's never happened before. Dexter has gone to stay with his dad and Skye is worried he won't cope without her. Starring Sydney Wade and Mark Addy.

TUE 14:30 The Audio Describers (b05ssqpl)
Matthew Sweet enters a whole new cinematic world that sighted people know little or nothing about - audio description. It's the voice in your ear that tells you what's happening if you can't see the pictures.

The audio description profession has its own stars, its own virtuosi. How do they allow visionary cinema to exist beyond the realm of vision? This is cinema for radio.
Matthew meets the men and women who do this work - the invisible co-stars of the world's greatest actors, invisible collaborators of the greatest writers and directors.

In fact, the practice of using evocative and poetic language to bring moving pictures to life has a much longer tradition. In early 20th-century Japan, Benshi narrators would interpret – and often elaborate on - Western and home-grown films for Tokyo audiences. The art form continues today.

In Edwardian Britain, film explainers would bring an aural addition, often with musical accompaniment, to silent films. Matthew Sweet finds this tradition is also alive and well - at a film festival in Scotland.

University of Leeds

A lively and funny quiz show, hosted by Steve Punt, where a team of three University students take on a team of three of their professors.

Coming this week from the University of Leeds, the specialist subjects are Civil Engineering, Popular Music Studies and Psychology, with questions ranging from dada and Dylan, to concrete and cogwheels - via penguins and postage stamps.

The rounds vary between Specialist Subjects and General Knowledge, quickfire bell-and-buzzer rounds, and the 'Highbrow and Lowbrow' round cunningly devised to test not only the students' knowledge of current affairs, history, languages and science, but also their Professors' awareness of television, film, and One Direction.

The resulting show is funny, fresh, and not a little bit surprising, with a truly varied range of scores, friendly rivalry, and moments where students wished they had more than just glanced at that reading list.

The host Steve Punt, although best known as a satirist on The Now Show, is also someone who delights in all facets of knowledge, not just in the Humanities (his educational background) but in the sciences as well. He has made a number of documentaries for Radio 4, on subjects as varied as "The Poet Unwound - The History Of The Spleen" and "Getting The Gongs" (an investigation into awards ceremonies), as well as a comedy for Radio 4's Big Bang Day set in the Large Hadron Collider, called "The Genuine Particle".

WED 11:00 Neil Innes: Dip My Brain In Joy (m000py8k)
1. Bangs, Belches, Smut & Smoke

Diane Morgan celebrates the life and work of Neil Innes, the music and comedy legend of The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band & The Rutles. A towering talent, occasionally known as the 7th Python & regularly found with a duck on his head. His legacy of music and comedy is rich, inspiring and inspired.

Neil said of his work, “Shakespeare wrote comedies as well as dramas. I’m just like Shakespeare, except with better songs.” His influence permeates modern comedy and his back catalogue is diverse and prolific. Neil wrote and performed anarchic rock with The Bonzos, he penned and performed pitch-perfect pastiches of the Beatles for The Rutles, he appeared in Monty Python and the Holy Grail and Monty Python’s Life of Brian and he is one of only two non-Pythons with a writing credit on Monty Python’s Flying Circus – the other being Douglas Adams. He released over 20 albums including How Sweet To Be An Idiot, Innes Book of Records, and Recycled Vinyl Blues. And on top of being comedically and musically gifted, he was also a really nice man. A beautiful, kind, gentle soul. Considered, absurd, and delightful.

Over the next three weeks, we’re going to celebrate his life, work and absurdist tendencies in this three hour collage of scraps and archive. There are old interviews, performances and programmes, conversations with family, friends and fans including his wife of over fifty years Yvonne, Stephen Fry, Adrian Edmondson, Kevin Eldon, Rick Wakeman and Arthur Smith, bandmates Rodney Slater, Phil Jackson, Ken Thornton, and John Halsey (better known to Rutles fans as Barry Wom), TV producer Ian Keill, record producer Martin Lewis, studio engineer extraordinaire Steve James, musical arranger extraordinaire John Altman, and Pythons Terry Gilliam and Michael Palin.

In Part One, Bangs, Belches, Smut & Smoke, we look at Neil's early life and his musical and artistic influences. And we go out on the road, and into the recording studio, with the group of absurd young men who came together by chance, to mutilate the trad jazz movement of the 1920s, to subvert the new wave of psychedelic pop and to nurture a quite deliberate misunderstanding of anarchy - The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band.

Neil died on Sunday 29th December 2019. He was 75. At the time of his death, he was working on a new album, and a project called Radio Noir, part-audio memoir, part-experimental work of art, part- exploration of the human brain and you will hear some extracts and some unreleased songs throughout the programme.

Written and produced for BBC Radio 4 Extra by Laura Grimshaw.

And would you want to make some canny investments that take advantage of our human weaknesses?

Simon looks at the economics, history and health issues behind these oh-so-addictive commodities.

With the help of economics guru, More Or Less host Tim Harford and the Queen of investment know-how, Merryn Somerset-Webb, Simon walks us around the economics of these very familiar commodities and pokes fun at our relationship with them.

More shop based shenanigans and over the counter philosophy, courtesy of Ramesh Mahju and his trusty sidekick Dave.

Set in a Scots-Asian corner and written by and starring Donald Mcleary and Sanjeev Kohli, the award winning Fags, Mags & Bags returns for a 9th series with all the regular characters and some guest appearances along the way.

Join the staff of Fags, Mags and Bags in their tireless quest to bring nice-price custard creams and cans of coke with Arabic writing on them to an ungrateful nation. Ramesh Mahju has built it up over the course of over 30 years and is a firmly entrenched, friendly presence in the local area. He is joined by his shop sidekick Dave.

Then of course there are Ramesh’s sons Sanjay and Alok, both surly and not particularly keen on the old school approach to shopkeeping, but natural successors to the business. Ramesh is keen to pass all his worldly wisdom onto them - whether they like it or not!

Series 7

Episode 4

Skye has finally spoken to Scarlett. But she's miles away. Dexter's still with Ed. But Aiden Hardy keeps turning up.

It is also inspired by ongoing voluntary work in Gainsborough.

THU 14:30 A Love Supreme: 50 Years On (b051s0fp)
Often cited as one of the greatest albums ever made, John Coltrane's A Love Supreme is revered not just by jazz aficionados but music fans the world over. Released in 1965, British saxophonist Courtney Pine explores what makes it such a unique and important record.

John Coltrane intended A Love Supreme to be a spiritual record - a declaration of his religious beliefs and personal spiritual quest. However the album also had a wider cultural significance. It was released in February 1965, just days after black rights activist Malcolm X was assassinated and weeks before Martin Luther King led the March on Alabama, and for many the sound and feel of the music captures perfectly the sadness, confusion and anger of America's growing black consciousness movement.

Courtney visits Gaumont State Theatre in Kilburn, North London, where Coltrane performed on a tour in 1961. He is joined by a trio of leading British jazz saxophonists - Nat Birchall, Finn Peters and Jason Yarde – whose lives have been inspired and shaped by A Love Supreme and the music and spirit of John Coltrane.

Our quartet of musicians explore why the album touches so many and continues to do so with each new generation.

THU 22:30 Brian Gulliver's Travels (b00yyc83)
Series 1

Juradia

Brian Gulliver, a seasoned presenter of travel documentaries, finds himself in a hospital's secure unit after claiming to have had a number of bizarre adventures.

This week we hear about his travels in Juradia, a country where every other person is a lawyer.

Written by Bill Dare
Produced by Steven Canny

Brian Gulliver's Travels is a new satirical adventure story from Bill Dare. The series has attracted an excellent cast led by Neil Pearson and award winning star of the RSC's current season, Mariah Gale. Cast includes fantastic actors Tamsin Greig, John Standing, Paul Bhattacharjee, Christopher Douglas, Catherine Shepherd, Vicky Pepperdine, Phil Cornwell, Antonia Campbell Hughes, Jo Bobin and Katherine Jakeways.

For years Bill Dare wanted to create a satire about different worlds exploring Kipling's idea that we travel, 'not just to explore civilizations, but to better understand our own'. But science fiction and space ships never interested him, so he put the idea on ice. Then Brian Gulliver arrived and meant that our hero could be lost in a fictional world without the need for any sci-fi.

Satirical targets over the series: the medical profession and its need to pathologize everything; the effect of marriage on children; spirituality and pseudo-science; compensation culture; sexism; the affect of our obsession with fame.

Gulliver's Travels is the only book Bill Dare read at university. His father, Peter Jones, narrated a similarly peripatetic radio series: The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in February 2011.

FRI 14:15 D for Dexter (m000ptb3)
Series 7

Episode 5

Skye might have made a big mistake. But Dexter is ok and Ed wants to buy her breakfast.

It is also inspired by ongoing voluntary work in Gainsborough.
