Birmingham

Dominic Arkwright and guests discuss the city of Birmingham; its flaws and its fabulousness.

According to a survey, the majority of the population believe that Manchester is the UK's second city and not Birmingham. Lord Digby Jones added further fuel to that debate when he suggested in 2011 that Manchester has a more legitimate claim to that crown.

But is there anything to be gained from being classified as second? Is it a title that either cities want?

Brummies Adrian Goldberg and Shazia Mirza and Mancunian Luke Bainbridge join Dominic Arkwright to discuss why coolness is the one adjective that has eluded the city of a thousand trades.

Blighted by dialectic prejudice and the stereotypes borne of Crossroads and the like, Birmingham is about to embark on another architectural city revamp.

Is Birmingham happy with itself?

SAT 02:30 Blind Date with Don Camillo (b04009c2)
Peter White goes in search of one of his childhood's favourite comic heroes, the buffoonish figure of Don Camillo.

Whilst at the National Blind School, Peter lapped up the braille books that described the antics of this angry Italian Catholic priest who was always pitted against Peppone, the Communist mayor.

Peter discovers that author Giovannino Guareschi's comic creations provide a fascinating road map to the bitter rivalries and huge political instability of post-war Italy. This was a time when the battle-scarred country was recovering from 20 years of Mussolini's fascism, from Nazi occupation, and the Allied campaign to seize the country. The internationally popular Don Camillo books are a snapshot of the early Cold War years when the Communist Party was riding high, and entirely at odds with the conservatism of the Catholic church.

Meeting Guareschi's descendants, Italian satirists today, a publisher and academics, Peter discovers that the short stories he so enjoyed as a teenager unlock a passionate and pivotal time in Italy's history.

Arrested and imprisoned by three different successive regimes, first by Mussolini, then made a POW by the Nazis, only to fall foul of the post-war Christian Democrat government, we'll hear that Guareschi continued to hone his satire, always using humour to poke fun at authority, in whatever shape or form it presented itself. He certainly knew how to make life hard for himself, but nearly 50 years after his death Guareschi's characters live on: the Don Camillo films remain a staple of Italian TV.

But, Peter asks, do the antics and rivalries of Don Camillo and Peppone still speak to us today, and if so, what do they tell us?

Katherine Parkinson and Julian Rhind-Tutt star in this 'Comedy Showcase' pilot about an alien invasion of a small English village.

The Geonin are not your typical alien invaders. Instead of the usual all-at-once approach to global domination (which usually fails, they've noticed) they've decided to start small. They've encircled a small English village with an impenetrable heat wave, preventing anything coming in or out.

With Cresdon Green as their base, they will learn about humankind, using their knowledge to effectively and efficiently spread their domination over the rest of the world, bit by bit.

Katrina just came back to borrow some money from her parents. And, having been turned down, she's really in no mood to stick around - but the Geonin are not letting anyone in or out, and she has tickets to the theatre in London. So what choice does she have but to start The Resistance?

SAT 12:00 Bad Salsa (b048jj9b)
Series 1

A New Perspective

After treatment for ovarian and breast cancer Chippy, mad Jill is sad and Terri is definitely dangerous to know!

The road back after cancer treatment can be tricky and full of obstacles.

Two middle-aged women and their younger friend seek to regain their zest for life and love by learning to dance at Bad Salsa, the club where everyone knows your name but no-one knows your prognosis!

Depictions of people with cancer on TV and radio too often follow a standard format; there is the diagnosis, the depression the chemo, then the false recovery followed by the tragic death.

Written by Kay Stonham, Bad Salsa tries to paint a picture at once more hopeful and more in line with survival rates, which have improved immensely over the past 20 years.

For many, 'living with cancer' is now their day-to-day challenge. Our characters have finished their treatment and are in the process of finding their way back to normal life or at least finding a "new normal."

Everyday challenges must go on like boring marriages, distracting crushes, troublesome children, difficult workmates and infuriating parents. But their brush with mortality gives them a new perspective.

So do they preserve their pre-cancer status quo, or in Terri's words, to say, "sod it all" and "go for it!"?

Follow the women as they embrace the world of salsa whilst they adjust to life after cancer.

SAT 13:00 Archive on 4 (b01s37f3)
Collar the Lot

Actor Tom Conti explores the story of Italian internment in Britain during the Second World War.

On June 10th 1940, Mussolini declared war on Britain and France. Overnight, as a result, the thousands of Italians living in Britain were declared enemies, considered a potential threat. Winston Churchill ordered the authorities to 'collar the lot' of so-called 'enemy aliens' and over 4,000 Italians were rounded up and imprisoned.

Most were shopkeepers, hairdressers, ice cream sellers and respectable citizens at the heart of their communities. Many had been in Britain all their lives.

We hear from some of the very few still alive, who were taken from families, jobs and homes to makeshift camps across the UK.

Tom Conti's own father was an Italian who had made a life in Scotland, but was interned on the Isle of Man. Tom visits the island to discover which camp his father was kept in, and what conditions were like for all those kept behind barbed wire.

Alfonso Conti narrowly avoided being put on board the cruise liner the Arandora Star, which was requisitioned for war duties and was bound for Newfoundland carrying internees. It was hit by a torpedo just off Ireland and sank within 20 minutes.

With archive interviews and testimony from the last Italian survivor, Tom tells the story of the ship's tragic sinking, in which nearly 500 Italian civilians lost their lives, and lift the lid on this overlooked episode in British history.

Hannah is schooled in speaking Geordie by top accent coach Marina Tyndall. And Adam talks to author and acoustics expert Trevor Cox about how accents evolved and why they persist.

We meet Debie who has Foreign Accent Syndrome - an extremely rare condition in which your accent can change overnight. After a severe bout of flu, which got progressively worse, Debie's Brummie accent suddenly transformed into something distinctively more European.

SUN 11:00 The Moth Radio Hour (m000k82w)
Series 10

Pregnancy, Cigarettes, and Desert Islands

True stories told live in the USA: Catherine Burns introduces stories of a break-up, a chance meeting and an unusual dinner guest.

The Moth is an acclaimed not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the art and craft of storytelling based in the USA. Since 1997, it has celebrated both the raconteur and the storytelling novice, who has lived through something extraordinary and yearns to share it. Originally formed by the writer George Dawes Green as an intimate gathering of friends on a porch in Georgia (where moths would flutter in through a hole in the screen), and then recreated in a New York City living room, The Moth quickly grew to produce immensely popular events at theatres and clubs around New York City and later around the USA, the UK and other parts of the world.

The Moth has presented more than 15,000 stories, told live and without notes, to standing-room-only crowds worldwide. The Moth podcast is downloaded over 27 million times a year.

Featuring true stories told live on stage without scripts, from the humorous to the heart-breaking.

The Moth Radio Hour is produced by Jay Allison and Atlantic Public Media in Woods Hole, Massachusetts and is distributed by the Public Radio Exchange.

First broadcast in the USA in 2019.

SUN 12:00 Poetry Extra (m00120pz)
Warsan Shire: Brave Girl Rising

Poet Daljit Nagra selects 'Warsan Shire - Brave Girl Rising' inspired by Shire's long-distance friendship with Nasro, a young refugee living in a Kenyan camp. Warsan Shire has written and reads five poems about her and the experience of exile.

The much admired Somali/British poet has become the laureate of displaced persons - her own family fled Somalia when she was very young.

Warsan Shire's first collection of poetry, Teaching My Mother How to Give Birth, established her reputation. Her contribution of poems to Beyoncé's 2016 visual album Lemonade, made her internationally famous.

Warsan gives very few interviews so we are delighted to feature some of her thoughts about writing, visiting Somalia, her own family and what poetry can achieve.

The poems for Nasro were written to accompany a film, Brave Girl Rising, that highlights the plight of young women refugees and the vital importance for them of education.

SUN 15:30 Tupac Shakur, Hip Hop Immortal..... (b04g10zp)
Poet Al Letson recalls the life of Tupac Shakur, a conflicted African American folk hero.

The son of a black panther, Tupac trained as an actor, posed as a street thug and became a best selling rapper. He continues to be mythologised, revered and highlighted like no other. He was shot and killed in 1996, yet he is still a top-selling and requested hip hop artist.

A restless revolutionary he led a conflicted life, causing moral outrage in one verse and capturing the voice of the disenfranchised in another. He continues to inspire the disenfranchised around the world and has even been chosen by the Vatican, as someone who 'aimed to reach the heart of good minded people.'

He carried the conflict between community struggle and personal gain. He wrote the feminist elegy "Brenda's Got a Baby" and the abusive "Wonda Why They Call U Bitch."

Exploring the the complexity of Tupac's life and the contending identities that defined him, Al will ask what is it about Tupac's life that still resonates?

SUN 22:30 Paul Sinha's Citizenship Test (b0386j1j)
Episode 2

Paul Sinha is proudly British. He also loves a quiz. So you would have thought that the UK Citizenship Test, which newcomers to this country must pass to become citizens, would have been right up his street. But the questions in the 2012 and 2013 Home Office guides seem either bizarrely easy - "Where is Welsh most widely spoken?" - or infuriatingly vague - "What happened in the First World War?".

So Paul has created his own test, to better reflect the things that aspiring migrants should understand before they can call themselves British. In this second episode he deals with the health of the nation - our diet, our drinking habits and our athletic prowess. And he tests the studio audience on their knowledge, with those that answer incorrectly being deported.

The series intertwines the sort of comedy Paul has become known for on The Now Show, The News Quiz, and Fighting Talk, as well as his own Radio 4 shows The Sinha Test and The Sinha Games, and the command of facts and figures he demonstrates on the ITV quiz show The Chase, with a dash of the patriotism that has seen him banned from the bar at the United Nations.

Written and performed by Paul Sinha.
Producer: Ed Morrish.

TUE 07:00 Bad Salsa (b06vkj1w)
Series 1

Mount Kilimanjaro

After treatment for Ovarian and breast cancer Chippy, is mad Jill is sad and Terri is definitely dangerous to know! The road back after cancer treatment can be tricky and full of obstacles.

Two middle aged women and their younger friend seek to regain their zest for life and love by learning to dance at Bad Salsa, the club where everyone knows your name but no-one knows your prognosis!

Depictions of people with cancer on TV and radio too often follow a standard format; there is the diagnosis, the depression the chemo, then the false recovery followed by the tragic death.

Written by Kay Stonham, Bad Salsa tries to paint a picture at once more hopeful and more in line with survival rates which have improved immensely over the past 20 years.

For many, 'living with cancer' is now their day to day challenge. Our characters have finished their treatment and are in the process of finding their way back to normal life or at least finding a "new normal." Everyday challenges must go on like boring marriages, distracting crushes, troublesome children, difficult workmates and infuriating parents. But their brush with mortality gives them a new perspective.

So do they preserve their pre-cancer status quo or in Terri's words, to say "sod it all" and "go for it!"

Follow the women as they embrace the world of salsa whilst they adjust to life after cancer.

You may not immediately know the title but in hearing just the first few notes you are most likely to know the music.

Erik Satie's Gymnopédies are a collection of short, atmospheric pieces of which Gymnopédie No.1 is perhaps the most popular. Music historian and author Mark Prendergast has studied Satie's work and reveals the complex character of the man who revolutionised the 19th century classical music of Europe. Melbourne based artist Colin Duncan reflects on the music's 'physical form which takes you into space and time' and for him inspired a body of work created in brail. Murder Mystery writer Cathy Ace remembers how this meditative music could shut out the noise of the city as she sped around London in her old brown mini, whilst Mathematician and author Ian Stewart explores the mathematics of this special piece and how music can touch our soul.

Henry Normal: A Normal... Ageing

"Shove up National Treasures. We need to make room for Henry Normal"
Simon O'Hagan - Radio Times

The eighth instalment in this acclaimed, occasional series in which acclaimed, occasional writer Henry Normal tackles those subjects so big only radio can possibly contain them.

So far Henry has covered ‘Family’, ‘Life’, ‘Love’, ‘Imagination’, ‘Nature’, ‘The Universe’ and ‘Communication; in this new episode, recorded in front of a live audience in Stratford Upon Avon, he will be talking about getting older.

Through poetry, stories, jokes and quotes Henry will be exploring being in the autumn of his life, when things are "going a different colour and dropping off.

Henry Normal is a multi-award winning writer, producer and poet. Co-writer of award winning TV programmes such as The Royle Family, The Mrs Merton Show, Coogan’s Run and Paul Calf, and producer of, amongst many others, Oscar-Nominated Philomena, Gavin and Stacey and Alan Partridge.

Praise for previous episodes in this series:

"It's a rare and lovely thing: half an hour of radio that stops you short, gently demands your attention and then wipes your tears away while you have to have a little sit down"

"It's a real treat to hear a seasoned professional like Henry taking command of this evening comedy spot to deliver a show that's idiosyncratic and effortlessly funny"

"Not heard anything that jumps from hilarious to moving in such an intelligent, subtle way as Henry Normal's show"

The history of radio's ability to parody itself goes back almost to the birth of radio. The range of this parody is so wide - news, current affairs, drama, the arts, phone-ins, investigative journalism - that the production team on this programme decided that a single presenter simply wouldn't do it justice.

Co-presented by a truly exceptional range of favourite radio voices, including Charlotte Green and Kirsty Young and Ruth from the Archers, who collectively explore why radio is the best medium for parody, and its important role in our society, perhaps today more than ever.

In the last of three programmes, Jan Ravens joins this roster of celebrities to talk with the distinguished radio critic Gilllian Reynolds CBE.

They may be a shadow of their former infrastructural selves but railways still hold a curiously affectionate place in our national life.

That's nowhere more true than in the world of music where chuffing, whistling, steaming and clackety-clacking have been the inspiration for hundreds of songs.

Pianist and broadcaster Simon Townley has never described himself as a railway enthusiast, but he's always had an ear for the things that inspire composers and songwriters.

Country and Western star Laura Cantrell, music professor Allan Moore and composer Sir Richard Rodney Bennett contribute their thoughts on this mass transit system which has provided such a rich seam of inspiration over the last 200 years.

Untamed & Theft By Finding

The globetrotting, trash-picking, aisle-rolling storyteller is back with more words of wit and wisdom.

* A new story fresh from the pages of The New Yorker, Untamed

* Extracts from his book Theft By Finding, a compilation of diary entries from 1977-2002.

With sardonic wit and incisive social critiques, David Sedaris has become one of America's pre-eminent humour writers. The great skill with which he slices through cultural euphemisms and political correctness proves that he is a master of satire and one of the most observant writers addressing the human condition today.

David Sedaris's first book, Barrel Fever (1994), which included The SantaLand Diaries. was a critical and commercial success, as were his follow-up efforts, Naked (1997), Holidays on Ice (1997) and Me Talk Pretty One Day (2000). He became known for his bitingly funny recollections of his youth, family life and travels, making semi-celebrities out of his parents and siblings.

David Sedaris has been nominated for three Grammy Awards for Best Spoken Word and Best Comedy Album. A feature film adaptation of his story C.O.G. was released after a premier at the Sundance Film Festival (2013). He has been a contributor to BBC Radio 4 since 1996.

THU 14:30 In Defence of Pushy Parents (b042jpk2)
Picked on by the media, feared by teachers, banned from the touchlines on sports day – pushy parents are public enemy number one. In this programme, self-professed pushy parent Rosie Millard launches a spirited defence, arguing that pushy parents are a much maligned force within society.

Broadcaster and writer Rosie Millard's view is not a popular one, from psychologists who warn that overbearing parenting can damage a child's health, to teachers who argue that they spend more time dealing with pushy parents than they do actually teaching, there are no shortage of people lining up to have a pop.

With Britain's children slipping down the international league tables, Rosie hears from controversial "Tiger-Mom" Amy Chua who explains that the hard-line East Asian parenting style instils within children discipline and focus that is lacking from many children in the West.

In Manchester, Rosie speaks to the head teacher at one of the country's top primary schools who states that her school's consistently excellent results would simply not be possible without its bevy of pushy parents.

Rosie argues that being a pushy parent is about more than just a child's education, it's also about helping your children blossom through extracurricular pursuits. At the Golders Green Rapidplay Chess Tournament, Rosie meets 9 year old chess prodigy Joshua Altman and his "hardcore chess mum" Hillary.

Pushy parents also play a vital role in spurring on youngsters for sporting successes, we hear from Paralympic gold medallist Josef Craig who explains that his medal glory would have been impossible without his parents' drive and support.

Taking Overs

Following a successful pilot, Hattie Morahan and Julian Rhind-Tutt star in Eddie Robson's sitcom about an alien invasion of a small English village.

Katrina Lyons was only visiting Cresdon Green, the village where she grew up, to borrow some money from her parents. But when she tried to head back to London, it turned out alien beings known as the Geonin had lowered a force field around the village and were refusing to let anyone in or out.

Unfortunately almost everyone in the village is too cowardly, apathetic, polite or stupid to stand up to this alien menace, so Katrina has no choice but to start the resistance movement herself. In the cricket pavilion.

In this episode, the force field around the village is keeping out all the rain, so the villagers can no longer moan about the weather. Uljabaan realises this means they're moaning about him instead.

Whilst he tries to construct a device to simulate rain inside the force field, Uljabaan distracts the village with a cricket match - aliens versus humans, with Richard captaining the humans. Katrina sees an opportunity to sabotage Uljabaan's computer - if she can keep the match going long enough.

FRI 18:30 Off the Page (b01j5j2s)
No Country for Old Men

"That is no country for old men," wrote Yeats in the opening line of his poem Sailing to Byzantium. "I am trying to write about the state of my soul," he later explained. Since when the phrase has been picked up in a novel by Cormac McCarthy, and a Coen brothers film based on the same book. But are we any closer to understanding what this phrase means, beyond realising something poignant is at work ?

Tibor Fischer, Katharine Whitehorn and Guy Browning all approach the subject with three very different columns about age, experience, and youth. For Guy Browing this is no longer a country for old men because they've decided that staying young is more to their taste. Katharine Whitehorn, agony aunt at Saga, argues for the creation of a fourth age of man, while Tibor Fischer worries about what has changed more, his world or him.

Dominic Arkwright presents.
