SAT 13:00 Pieces of Britney (p09mw62b)
5. Chaotic

Pandora Sykes navigates the media narratives around Britney, once she gets married and has kids.

In this eight-part series for BBC Radio 4, Pandora traces Britney’s incredible life: from her hardscrabble childhood in rural Louisiana, to her coronation as the inaugural pop princess of the internet, navigating an insatiable celebrity gossip complex; through to a young mother on trial by the paparazzi.

Britney is a pop culture phenomenon. Pandora looks behind that mask - and beyond Britney herself - to explore how Britney became the most Googled person in the world, for almost 7 years, and what it says, both then and now, about the entertainment industry, politics, sex and how we see women in the public eye.

Britney’s public struggles saw her placed in a conservatorship, in which she lost the right to control her finances and day to day life. Thirteen years later, and she is in court, pleading for this controversial legal arrangement to end. We look at how Britney has been transformed from girl-next-door teen sensation to pop music’s Rapunzel, trapped in a supposedly rotten system.

Pieces of Britney mixes documentary, archive and interviews to tell Britney’s remarkable story. It also features drama, written by playwright Katie Hims, to bring Britney and her extraordinary world to life.

Pieces of Britney is a sympathetic portrayal of Britney, during a time of cultural reappraisal about how we treat women - famous, or otherwise.

Kevin . . . . . Joseph Ayre
Lynne . . . . . Laurel Lefkow

Yusuf Cat Stevens

From The Beatles to Nina Simone.

Singer-songwriter Yusuf Cat Stevens shares his castaway choices with Lauren Laverne.

Yusuf Cat Stevens is a singer-songwriter who first enjoyed success more than 50 years ago.

He was born Steven Demetre Georgiou in July 1948. His Greek Cypriot father and his Swedish mother ran a restaurant in the West End of London, and he helped out there from an early age. He also became interested in music, writing and singing his own songs, partly inspired by the success of The Beatles.

Under the name Cat Stevens, he was just 18 when he had his first hit, and soon found himself on tour with Engelbert Humperdinck and Jimi Hendrix. His career came to a sudden halt in 1969, when he contracted tuberculosis and was forced out of the limelight for a year of recuperation. It was also a time of reflection. He emerged a changed man in 1970 - a sensitive singer-songwriter whose albums, including Tea for the Tillerman, and Teaser and the Firecat, sold millions of copies around the world.

While enjoying fame and success, he also thought more deeply about religious faith, an interest which increased after he nearly drowned while swimming in the Pacific. He became a Muslim in 1977, changed his name to Yusuf Islam and walked away from music. He soon became one of the UK's most high-profile Muslims, and was often asked to comment about aspects of Islam. For two decades, he didn’t touch his guitar, but in 2006 he made a comeback with an album entitled An Other Cup. SUN 12:00 Poetry Extra (m00107rb)
The Person From Porlock

Daljit Nagra revists the BBC's poetry archive and selects The Person From Porlock. Presented by Paul Farley.

When the poet Coleridge failed to complete his 'dream poem' Kubla Khan, he laid the blame on a 'person from Porlock' who had called to see him on business, thereby fatally interrupting his writing.

'The Person from Porlock' has come to represent anything that interrupts the creative process, and he has inspired a number of poems in his own right, from writers as diverse as Stevie Smith and R S Thomas.

Paul Farley travels to Porlock in Somerset in search of Coleridge's mysterious visitor and, in the company of Tim Liardet, Hester Jones and Tom Mayberry, contemplates a number of poetic interruptions - both obstructive and curiously inspirational.

Producer: Emma Harding

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2012.

2009: Dan Box. The Sinking Islands

In 2009 Australian journalist Dan Box was awarded the Royal Geographical Society (in association with the BBC) prize for the most enterprising dream travel idea.

Anglo-Australian journalist Dan Box Journey of a Lifetime is to visit the remote South Pacific coral atoll group known as the Carteret Islands, part of Papua New Guinea. These low-lying islands rise barely a metre above the level of the surrounding ocean, and with what are known as King Tides threatening every year, rising sea levels as a result of global warming are for the Carteret Islanders a threat that's already a reality. Last winter's great storm resulted in the islands being badly flooded, their productive soil rendered useless by the salt in the water. Now the Carteret people have no way of growing crops in their plots, or 'gardens' and the local authorities have started a process of mass evacuation. Eventually thousands of men, women and children will be resettled in the neighbouring island community of Bougainville.

Dan Box was determined to watch the world's first organised exodus as a result of climate change as it got underway. But first he had to negotiate the tricky journey - diplomatic as well as physical - that would take him to these tiny spikes of coral amid the vastness of the Pacific Ocean.

TUE 11:00 Pieces of Britney (p09mw66w)
6. Shattered

Pandora Sykes explores of the heavy cost of having private troubles as a public figure.

We will look at how Britney has been transformed from girl-next-door teen sensation to pop music’s Rapunzel, trapped in a supposedly rotten system.

TUE 14:30 The Man with Many Names (b015ck96)
Brian O'Nolan (1911 - 1966) was born - or perhaps Brian O Nuallain if you want to be strictly accurate. He spoke Irish at home and learned English second (and German too); yet arguably his greatest work - the Third Policeman - is a tour de force of English linguistical pyrotechnics and Lewis Carroll-like absurdist exoticism - people turning into bicycles is par for the course.

He published his books as Flann O'Brien; he penned a must-read daily column in the Irish Times as Myles na gCopaleen and at various times in his short life wrote as George Knowall, John James Doe, Matt Duffy, Count O'Blather, Brother Barnabas and Sean O'Longain... But as Brian O'Nolan he was also a senior civil servant and adviser to government ministers, and his habit of retiring early to The Scotch House to consume many, many pints of plain, while tolerated for years ended up finishing his career. In fact 'the little weakness' as one contributor calls it finally cost O'Nolan his life.

Peter Day - a longtime Flann fan - travels to Dublin in search of the reality behind the multiple personas, and meets those who drank with him, supped with him at the family dinner table and have made careers out of studying him...

The University of Hull

A funny and dynamic quiz show hosted by Steve Punt - this week from the University of Hull with specialist subjects including American Studies, History and Business and Management and questions ranging from Credit Card Fraud to Cthulhu with a fretful porpentine thrown in for good measure.

The programme is recorded on location at a different University each week, and it pits three Undergraduates against three of their Professors in an original and fresh take on an academic quiz.

The rounds vary between Specialist Subjects and General Knowledge, quickfire bell-and-buzzer rounds and the Highbrow and Lowbrow round cunningly devised to test not only the students' knowledge of current affairs, history, languages and science, but also their Professors' awareness of television, sport, and quite possibly Justin Bieber. In addition, the Head-to-Head rounds see students take on their Professors in their own subjects, offering plenty of scope for mild embarrassment on both sides.

Other Universities featured in this series include Roehampton, Liverpool, Queen's University Belfast and St John's College, Cambridge.

Shipbuilding

The song from 1982 was written by Elvis Costello and Clive Langer for Robert Wyatt and has been recorded in several versions by Elvis Costello himself, Suede, June Tabor, Hue and Cry, Tamsin Archer and The Unthanks.

The blend of subtle lyrics and extraordinary music makes this a political song like no other. It transcends the particular circumstances of its writing: the Falklands War and the decline of British heavy industry, especially ship-building.

Clive Langer and Elvis Costello describe how the song came to be written and how the legendary jazz trumpeter and flugelhorn player, Chet Baker, came to perform on Costello's version.

Richard Ashcroft is a philosopher who wants the song, which he describes as a kind of secular hymn, played at his funeral because it gives a perfect expression of how he believes we should think about life. Not being able to feel the emotion of the song would, he feels, be like being morally tone-deaf. If you don't like this song, he'd find it hard to be your friend.

The song's achingly beautiful final couplet about "diving for pearls" makes the MP Alan Johnson cry and has also inspired an oral history and migrant integration project in Glasgow. Chris Gourley describes how the participants found a way to overcome their lack of English and communicate through a shared understanding of ship-building practice.

Other contributors include Hopi Sen, a political blogger who was an unusually political child, and the Mercury Prize winning folk group The Unthanks. They toured their version to towns with ship-building connections as part of a live performance of a film tracing the history of British ship-building using archive footage.

Spring: Wedding Venues

Adam Riches stars as the bemused and culturally challenged comedian abroad - recorded in Sweden with a Swedish cast, and written by Danny Robins.

It's three years since Geoff moved to the tiny north Swedish town of Yxsjö with his girlfriend Linda (Sissela Benn from the Swedish version of The Office). It has been quite a culture shock and they've been through a lot in three years - rotting herring, moose and bears, battles with language, perfect ex-boyfriends and ice hockey, the birth of a son, a marriage proposal and a runaway hot air balloon.

This year promises much as Geoff's mother-in-law Gunilla (comedian Anna-Lena Bergelin) teaches him Swedish and his father-in-law Sten (Thomas Orredson from Crimes of Passion) tries to make a Swedish man of him - in an entirely non-sexist way.

Geoff and Linda start to plan their wedding with the questionable help of fellow ex-pat divorcee Ian (Danny Robins), Linda's brother, depressive Goth Anders (award winning stand-up Fredrik Andersson) and fellow immigrant, Kurdish Dane Soran (Farshad Kolghi of The Killing). In this first episode, the Andersson family take Geoff on a road trip to Stockholm.

The series also features guest appearances from Krister Henriksson (the original Wallander) and André Wickström (TV Comedian and actor) as Linda's ex-boyfriend and a Viking called Lars.

WED 14:30 The Welsh M1 (b03nt8g7)
Episode 1

The A470 runs nearly two hundred miles through the heart of Wales from Llandudno to Cardiff Bay. It was created to connect north and south of the country yet it takes four hours – sometimes more - to make the journey. It's certainly not the fastest road in the UK but to drive the A470 is to truly understand the landscape, history, culture and language of Wales.

In the first of two programmes, Cerys Matthews sets out on a road trip down the A470 in search of a nation's identity and the essence of Welshness. She travels through the Welsh-speaking heartland of the north-west, meeting writers, musicians and historians. She falls into conversation on the streets of Llanrwst, encounters poetry in the paving stones of Blaenau Ffestiniog and discovers the roots of one of her favourite folk songs on the high passes of the A470 beyond Dolgellau.

The A470's route is ancient, its northern sections following the old Roman road, Sarn Helen. Yet it's also modern: the politics of Wales are complicated by the challenge of bringing together a whole nation both geographically and symbolically. The A470 was created in 1979 by re-designating older roads. And that's why this tarmac tribute to nationhood winds back and forth across the Welsh landscape, apparently reluctant to reach its final destination.

As she travels south Cerys hears many different definitions and descriptions of the A470: a road to nowhere; the road Wales deserves; a highway of loss; the Welsh M1.

Episode 2

The A470 runs nearly two hundred miles through the heart of Wales from Llandudno to Cardiff Bay. It was created to connect north and south of the country yet it takes four hours – sometimes more - to make the journey. It's certainly not the fastest road in the UK but to drive the A470 is to truly understand the landscape, history, culture and language of Wales.

Cerys Matthews continues her journey down the A470 in search of a nation's identity and the essence of Welshness. As she travels south Cerys hears many different definitions and descriptions of the A470: a road to nowhere; the road Wales deserves; a highway of loss; the Welsh M1.

She discovers the crossroads of Wales in Rhayader, a town populated by rebels and red kites, she hears stories of the A470 from historians, poets, bikers and musicians and she finds herself serving customers in a roadside snack bar.

The A470 - and her journey – comes to an end in the re-vitalised Cardiff Bay, once known as Tiger Bay and now home to the Senedd, the seat of Welsh government. Here she meets Hassan Panero, a young poet from Cardiff's Somali community who gives Cerys his own definition of Welshness.

3. Sally Phillips & Victoria Pile on Smack The Pony

TV veterans Peter Fincham and Jon Plowman talk to the writers, producers, and performers behind Britain’s biggest TV comedy hits, and hear the inside story of how they brought their programmes to the screen.

In this episode of the new series of What’s Funny About… Peter Fincham and Jon Plowman talk to Sally Phillips and Victoria Pile, who variously created, wrote, and starred in the award-winning sketch show Smack The Pony

When Smack The Pony arrived on Channel 4 in 1999, the critics talked about it being a “female” sketch show. Which was right in as much as it starred and was run by women, and it pushed back against the male gaze which had so dominated the world of British comedy for so long.

But of course, it also rather missed the point – it wasn’t a female sketch show. It was a brilliant, edgy, silly, and gloriously funny sketch show.

Victoria and Sally discuss the challenges the show faced on its journey from a small idea pitched (by a man!) at a fancy Park Lane supper, to its BAFTA and Emmy success. They talk us through some of their favourite sketches and reveal how they created their vast array of characters. And they talk about the possibility of more episodes of Smack The Pony finding their way on to our screens.

Produced by Owen Braben.

FRI 14:15 John Reed - Ten Days That Shook the World (b097cjz9)
5. Chill Winds

John Reed's classic eye-witness account of the Russian Revolution in October 1917.

Ex-Prime Minster Kerensky has joined forces with the Cossacks and is advancing on Petrograd, and there is fighting in the streets in Moscow: rumour is rife that the Revolution cannot survive.

John Reed's vivid eye-witness account of his time in Petrograd was written in early 1918 and published in the USA the following year. It was an instant best-seller, so much so that in Russia it was some years before Stalin - who is only mentioned twice in the book - felt he could ban it for its portrayal of Trotsky. Possibly naïve, definitely politically one-sided, nevertheless the veracity and impact of Reed's enthusiastic snapshot-style reportage has become a classic memoir and inspired films including Eisenstein's classic 'October' and 'Reds' which won an Oscar for its director and star, Warren Beatty.

Author and former Children's Laureate Michael Rosen begins by visiting the actual town of Hamelin in Lower Saxony, exploring its medieval streets via rat-infested London, ancient German pagan ritual and the whispering silence of Eton College library.

He finally uncovers the truth behind the legend that should never again be thought of as just a fairy tale.

FRI 23:30 Sarah Kendall: Australian Trilogy (b08gxx7p)
Series 1

Touchdown

"This show is a story, and our story starts at the end. My parents came to see one of my shows, and I would end this particular show by telling a story about the time I swore at a teacher..."

Starting with a short routine from her comedy club set, Sarah admits that like with most stand-up routines, it had a punchline manufactured for the sake of a joke. Her mum challenges her to tell everyone what really happened the day she swore at that teacher and the result is this show. Denied the quick fix of a fabricated punchline it is transformed into a full, honest, coming-of-age story that explores the clumsiness of adolescents, their awkward relationships, and painful need for friendship and love.

Multi-award winning storyteller Sarah Kendall brings her critically acclaimed trilogy of funny and moving, live shows to BBC Radio.

Taking her audience on a trip, Sarah gives a unique snapshot of small-town life in Australia in the early 90s.

At a time when most people were seeing Australians through the filter of 'Home and Away' and 'Neighbours', Sarah's shows present a darker underbelly to the stereotype of the sun-loving, happy-go-lucky Aussie teenager.

Comedic and tragic in equal measure, Sarah's tales of her teenage life blend intricate narratives with a cast of memorable characters, bringing events to life in front of your very ears.
