The Cuckoo does not raise its own chick and across a range of Cuckoo individuals, they parasitise several species of bird - all much smaller than they are. David Attenborough explores the world of the Cuckoo and not only marvels at their natural history but tells the story of how a wildlife cameraman resolved a scientific mystery - and how the Cuckoo itself harbours yet more secrets to science and natural history.

TUE 11:00 Telling Tales (m00061yh)
Danny Robins

This week’s episode takes a trip to the unpronounceable village of Yxsjö with the writer, comedian and self-confessed Swedophile Danny Robins.

From comedy revue beginnings, performing alongside Marcus Brigstocke and Dan Tetsell at Bristol University, Danny has gone on to write numerous sketches, as well as scripts for sitcom, stage and documentaries.

One early live show, The Museum Of Everything, became a Sony-nominated series for Radio 4. And he’s since become a radio regular, writing for Dead Ringers, Hudson & Pepperdine, Armando Iannucci, and co-creating Rudy’s Rare Records with Lenny Henry; while his television work includes Young Dracula and The Basil Brush Show.

Danny’s most recent radio sitcom takes creative inspiration from his own experiences as a Brit indoctrinated by his Swedish wife. It is recorded on location; with Adam Riches starring alongside a cast of Swedish comic actors, and a fifth series has been commissioned for Radio 4.

In The Cold Swedish Winter, Danny mines a rich comic seam of cultural differences, exploring language, tradition and national characteristics, without resorting to cliché. The featured episode, New Swedes, also explores the country’s attitude towards immigration, a subject he explored further in the 2017 radio drama The Most Wanted Man In Sweden.

Both dramas are produced by Frank Stirling for the Unique Broadcasting Company.

Made for BBC Radio 4 Extra.

Series 1

Episode 4

Super-sharp everywoman Angela Barnes tackles life and love - and, with the help of an audience, packs herself a fantasy coffin.

Remembering her larger-than-life father - a gregarious character, sex shop manager, naturist, and a big fan of caravans and pranks - Angela celebrates his 'carpe diem' approach to life, and his favourite motto, You Can't Take It With You.

When her father died very suddenly in 2008, Angela and her family proved him wrong and stuffed his coffin with sentimental keepsakes for his final journey.

In this series, Angela does the very same thing and asks her loved ones to nominate objects that they would choose to send on with her as mementoes of their time together, which she keeps in a suitcase full of memories, acting as prompts for contemplative, heart-warming and captivating comedy.

Angela Barnes is a vivacious, critically acclaimed stand-up comic from Maidstone, Kent. After a career in health and social care, at aged 33 she decided to pursue a long held ambition and give comedy a go. Within a couple of years, Angela and her witty worldview had won the 2011 BBC New Comedy Award by a public vote, secured a weekly star slot in Channel 4's Stand Up For The Week and appeared on numerous radio and television shows including Loose Ends, The Now Show and writing credits on her beloved The News Quiz (BBC Radio 4), Russell Kane's Whistle Stop Tour (BBC Radio 2), Mock The Week (BBC 2) and Russell Howard's Good News (BBC 3).

THU 07:00 North by Northamptonshire (b03nt1sw)
Series 3

Episode 3

by Katherine Jakeways

Sheila Hancock narrates the bittersweet adventures of the residents of a small market town in Northamptonshire. This week, visitors are expected in Wadenbrook, and a revelation is long overdue.

As is well-known: Yorkshiremen wear flat caps and Essex girls wear short skirts; Liverpudlians are scallies and Cockneys are wideboys. Northamptonians gaze wistfully at these stereotypes and wish for an identity of any kind and a label less ridiculous than Northamptonians. Northamptonshire, let us be clear, is neither north, nor south nor in the Midlands. It floats somewhere between the three eyeing up the distinctiveness of each enviously. Now Katherine Jakeways is giving Northamptonshire an identity. And she waits, eagerly, for her home-county to thank her. And possibly make her some kind of Mayor.

Joined by nearly all of the incredible cast which graced Series One and Two - including Sheila Hancock as the Narrator, Penelope Wilton, Felicity Montagu, Geoffrey Palmer and Kevin Eldon - and with the exciting addition of Tim Key and Nathaniel Parker - North by Northamptonshire hopes (and promises) to once again delight audience and critics.

'The laughs are cruel, but the monsters of suburbia are curiously sympathetic, and the characters so well drawn and well played that this could run and run.' Time Out.

Birthday Drinks

A sitcom, written by Moray Hunter and starring Angus Deayton, about five single, middle aged neighbours living in flats in a converted house in North London.

Mitch (Angus Deayton) is a widower and part-time therapist who is looking to put his life back together now that he is single and living - supposedly temporarily - with Will (Pearce Quigley), his younger, more volatile and unhappily divorced half-brother.

Elsewhere in the building are schoolteacher Ellie (Abigail Cruttenden) who is shy, nervous and desperately missing her ex-boyfriend, overly honest, frustrated actress Louisa (Kate Isitt), and socially inept IT nerd Morris (Bennett Arron).

In Birthday Drinks, Mitch's birthday is approaching and he's desperately trying to avoid any fuss - not least because he's having a break from alcohol. Meanwhile Louisa is on the warpath, wanting feedback after her latest acting role, but everyone seems to be trying to change the subject for some reason.

An Absolutely production for BBC Radio 4, first broadcast in May 2018.

Series 1

The Mirror

In the throes of splitting up from her boyfriend, 29-year-old Charlotte (Helen Monks) is determined to prove she's not as self-centred as he says she is. She signs up as a volunteer to visit the elderly, expecting to be paired with a frail and needy old lady who's full of gratitude and appreciation for such a selfless act. Instead she meets 82-year-old Lillian (Miriam Margolyes), a belligerent and feisty old bat who sees through her in an instant.

Needless to say, they don't get on.

Helping Lillian clear out her garage is undoubtedly a Good Turn, but it's not long before Charlotte's self-interest gets the better of her. She spots a vintage treasure in amongst Lillian's junk and, determined to get her hands on it, attempts to manipulate Lillian into giving it to her. Not only does her plan backfire spectacularly, but it also reveals how both women are just as greedy as each other.

This four-part, two-actress comedy, written by Holly Walsh and Kat Sommers, was recorded on location and features the fantastic combination of Miriam Margolyes and Helen Monks, working together for the first time.

A Giddy Goat production for BBC Radio 4, first broadcast in October 2017.

FRI 23:30 Simon Evans Goes to Market (b043xqry)
Series 1

Grain

How do you make economics funny? How do you put the comedy in commodity? Simon Evans has the answer in this new series which asks us to get involved in investment.

Rather than being cowed by an apparently complicated and overwhelming system, Simon jumps right in. He takes as his focus four commodities which are so intrinsic to our lives they have an almost elemental significance - land, gold, oil and grain. Yet, despite the fact we encounter them everywhere we look, very few people have been able to build a fortune on them.
All that's about to change as, Simon enlists help from the experts. Each week he will be joined by Tim Harford, Merryn Somerset Webb and a guest specialist as they examine the chequered social and economic histories of these commodities. By looking at four such fundamental products, Simon brings us to a closer understanding of how global economic forces have a far-reaching and often surprising impact on our lives.
In this episode, Simon looks at commodities markets in grain. How moral is it to trade in food? how much of it is animal feed and what is the future of food?

Performed by ..... Simon Evans, with regular guests Tim Harford and Merryn Somerset-Webb, and to talk about grain markets, Kanes Rajah and Jim Rogers.
Written by ..... Simon Evans with Benjamin Partridge and Andy Wolton
Producer ..... Tilusha Ghelani.

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2014.
