The press fulminated, the enthusiasts were frustrated, and the radio manufacturers fumed. Despite the fact that Marconi had invented radio before Queen Victoria had celebrated her Diamond Jubilee in 1897, radio in Britain took another 25 years to begin an official service to listeners. But when, on November 14th 1922 the British Broadcasting Company's station at Marconi House radiated to an awaiting nation "This is 2LO calling" for the first time under the company's name, it marked the start of the first and most distinguished public-service radio station in the world.
As part of the celebrations to mark nine decades of the BBC, historian Dominic Sandbrook explores the long and involved pre-BBC history of radio in Britain, how Britain's broadcaster got going and developed into an institution dedicated to entertainment, education and information, discovers why Australian diva Dame Nellie Melba was involved, and how the improbably-named Captain Plugge made his first commercial broadcast to Britain, sponsored by Selfridges department store, from the Eiffel Tower. From Marconi to Savoy Hill via an old army hut in Essex, the story of the early radio in Britain.

iGOD is a highly original and funny new late-night comedy series for Radio 4. It stars Simon Day (The Fast Show) and David Soul (Starsky & Hutch) and is written by one of the head writers of the BAFTA award-winning The Thick Of It, Sean Gray and produced by Simon Nicholls (Ed Reardon's Week / News At Bedtime).
We all worry about the end of the world, as economists and environmentalists speak in apocalyptic terms everyday. iGOD says that trying to predict the end of the world is as pointless as moisturising an elephant's elbow.
In each episode, an unnamed, all-seeing narrator (David Soul - Starsky and Hutch) shows us that it is stupid to be worrying, as he looks back at some of the most entertaining apocalypses on parallel Earths. Each week our case study is a normal bloke called Ian (Simon Day) who manages to accidentally initiate the apocalypse of a different parallel world through a seemingly harmless single act (telling a lie, being lazy, cooking some lambshanks). A succession of comic vignettes ensue that escalate to the end of a parallel world.
With a full-range of sound effects and wonderfully funny and surreal twists, iGOD will be a true aural extravaganza.

London in 1666 was a health and safety nightmare. It was illegal to build with wood and thatch but people did it anyway. Foundries were forbidden in the city but that didn't stop them operating. Charles II had banned dangerous overhanging windows but this was ignored by local government who carried on building them regardless. Many homes still contained muskets and gunpowder left over from Cromwell's time. Six hundred tons of highly potent gunpowder were stored in the Tower of London itself. Riverfront warehouses were full of oil and tallow. There was no fire service.
In Pudding Lane, on 2 September, after a day of slaving over a hot oven, Thomas Farrinor, baker to King Charles II, went to bed unaware that his oven was still alight. The smouldering embers ignited some nearby firewood and by 1 o'clock in the morning his house was ablaze. A strong wind on that September morning ensured that sparks flew everywhere . . .
Samuel Pepys' diary of the following days, dramatised by Hattie Naylor, reveals the unfolding drama of 350 years ago.

Christa Wolf was one of the foremost post war German writers. Born in 1929, she grew up under the Nazi's and lived most of her adult life in East Germany, until the Berlin Wall came down. She was born in 1929, was a member of girls' division of the Hitler Youth. At the end of the war, her family tried to flee the Red Army but ended up in the Russian zone anyway. She died in 2011. The Quest for Christa T is considered one of her finest works. It is about a young woman who turns against the shallowness of the West but struggles in the East.
Perhaps it is not surprising that the role of fate and the power of ideologies to change the course of our lives permeate all her work.

Now in its ninth year, the BBC National Short Story Award continues to be one of the most prestigious and established awards for a single short story. The 2014 short list crowns a year which has seen short story writers scoop many of the major literary awards including the Nobel Prize for Literature and the Man Booker International Prize.
The shortlist for this year's BBC National Short Story Award in partnership with Booktrust comprises five beguiling and compelling stories from a mix of terrifically acclaimed writers in the genre and exciting up-and-coming writers, all vying for the top award of £15,000. Pivoting on transformative moments in people's lives, the stories are intimate explorations and reflections of coming of age, the attritions of time, love and betrayal. They take listeners across the globe from Wales and Kenya to London and New York.
The readers of this year's shortlist include Carey Mulligan and Rebecca Hall. Listeners can enjoy each story at
3.30pm from Monday 22nd September, following an interview with the author on the previous evening's Front Row (beginning on Friday 19th September). The shortlist will be announced on Front Row on Wednesday 17th September, and the winner and the runner-up will be announced in a special edition of the programme live from the BBC's Radio Theatre on Tuesday 30th September.
The stories will be available as a free download following broadcast, and in an anthology published by Comma Press.

The Tramp Who Would Be Queenie
Dave Lamb's brand new sitcom series about conspiracy theorist Dave Railings reaches its conclusion with the return to public life of Princess Diana...well possibly.
When Dave's deeply frustrated younger brother Jim invites a homeless person to come and live in their highly secured flat so that he can impress a charity worker he fancies, Dave becomes convinced that the homeless person in question is actually Princess Diana who is desperately in need of his help.
At the same time community police officers Nigel Spikes and Geoff Brown find themselves bottom of the arrests league table and Nigel hits upon the idea of rounding up the homeless in order to propel them towards mid-table respectability. Another hectic romp through half-truths and false assumptions sees four grown men battle to seal the fate of a woman who calls herself Queenie, and culminates in a way that no-one saw coming, not even the deeply paranoid Dave.

The Light Entertainment department was besieged, questions were asked in the House and Jeremy Hardy himself became known as the man responsible for the funniest show on radio since Money Box Live with Paul Lewis.
Since that fateful first series, Jeremy went on to win Sony Awards, Writers Guild nominations and a Nobel Prize for Chemistry. He was a much-loved regular on both The News Quiz and I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue.

When the Questers get drunk to celebrate Vidar's birthday, Sam tries once again to gain (albeit with customary cack-handedness) the affections of Penthiselea, much to her consternation. Meanwhile, Lord Darkness is anxious to get one over his old nemesis, Kaybar the Maleficent, and so decides to do something really newsworthy and light the "Beacon of Doom".
If the "Beacon of Doom" is lit then the runes dictate that one of the Questers must do battle in hand-hand combat with Lord Darkness himself. And so, to impress Penthiselea, Sam volunteers to be that Quester. Problem is, Sam doesn't have the first idea how to fight hand-to-hand. Fortunately, nor it seems, does Lord Darkness. Should make for an interesting showdown then...

After becoming the first in his family to graduate from University, Nathan opted not to use his architecture degree but instead to try his hand at being a full-time stand-up comedian, much to his family's horror and disgust. They desperately want him to get a 'proper job.'
Janet a.k.a. Mum is probably the kindest and most lenient of the disappointed family members. At the end of the day she just wants the best for her son. However, she'd also love to brag and show her son off to her friends, but with Nathan only telling jokes for a living that's kind of hard to do.
Martin a.k.a. Dad works in the construction industry and was looking forward to his son getting a degree so the two of them could work together in the same field. But now Nathan has blown that dream out of the window. Martin is clumsy and hard-headed and leaves running the house to his wife (she wouldn't allow it to be any other way).
Shirley a.k.a. Grandma cannot believe Nathan turned down architecture for comedy. She can't believe she left the paradise in the West Indies and came to the freezing United Kingdom for a better life so that years later her grandson could 'tell jokes!' How can her grandson go on stage and use foul language and filthy material... it's not the good Christian way!
So with all this going on in the household what will Nathan do? Will he persevere and follow his dreams? Or will he give in to his family's interference? Or will he finally leave home?!

Starring Arthur Lowe as Horace, Kenneth Connor as Valentine/ Bradshaw/Whitney, Liz Fraser as Gloria, Ian Lavender as Bert, Graham Stark as Joe Sims and Elizabeth Morgan.
Jim Eldridge's eponymous series is set in a sleepy railway station. The Hepplewhites have run 'Parsley Sidings' station for generations and the current Station Master, Horace, hopes that his son Bert will continue the line. Mild-mannered Ticket Clerk Bert wants to work anywhere but on the railways. His colleague, Station Announcer Gloria Simpkins, secretly loves him. Porter Percy Valentine is an archetypal wheeler-dealer and the ancient Signalman, Bradshaw, causes havoc and dispenses home-made remedies in equal measure. The 'Parsley Sidings' nemesis is Phineas Perkins, the station master of Potwhistle Halt, one stop down the line.

Hermann Hesse's classic novel is set in a futuristic, utopian society. This two-part dramatisation is by Lavinia Greenlaw and stars Derek Jacobi.
Joseph Knecht is a rising star in the Castalian Order, a band of elite intellectuals who live a closeted life of study and Glass Bead Game playing. But Joseph's elevation to one of the highest and most respected ranks of the Order coincides with a crisis of conscience, as his ever deepening doubts about this idealistic and sanitised society threaten to topple its very foundations.
The Glass Bead Game was Hesse's final major work. While recognised in his own lifetime (winning the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1946), he found a new generation of young readers after his death. His work was championed by the heroes of the counter-culture of the 1960s including Timothy Leary, and during the 1970s Hesse became extremely widely read and translated.

Count Arthur Strong - one-time Variety Star and now sole proprietor and owner of Doncaster's Academy of Performance - is a show-business legend, raconteur and lecturer extraordinaire. In each episode of this sixth series we hear, as ever, a confused, muddled and often challenging day-in-the-life of Count Arthur - with his mixed-up delivery of words and forthright self-delusion.
When Arthur attempts to return an item of clothing to a local shop, things don't quite go to plan - leading him to take some 'legal' advice at the Citizen's Advice Bureau. With an ever-increasing list of complaints, plus the possibility of having to acquire a puppy (or puppies) to boot, Arthur's day doesn't go quite as he'd hoped.
The occasion does give him a chance to take a trip down memory lane however, re-living an acting moment in a legal TV drama - which of course enables Arthur to give some sound advice of his own!
