In this behind-the-scenes documentary, scriptwriter Ray reveals his difficulty in getting the show commissioned – and how Michael Crawford wasn't first choice to play Frank.
The show's legendary daring stunts were co-ordinated by Stuart Fell who admits it was 'ambitious for the BBC' at the time.
Michele Dotrice recalls how filming on the edge of a cliff was 'a bit hairy' and reveals her mother's reaction when the stunt hit TV screens.
Classic clips and rare archive appearances are interwoven amongst fresh and in-depth interviews in this celebration of the BBC's much-loved comedy classic.

Nautical Castaways
Dame Katherine Grainger
Olympian and rower Dame Katherine Grainger is castaway by Kirsty Young.
A six-time rowing World Champion across a variety of classes, her silver medal at Rio in 2016 made her the most successful female British Olympic athlete ever, having won medals in five consecutive games.
Born in Glasgow in 1975, Katherine's parents were teachers. At school she earned a black belt in karate, and it wasn't until she went to Edinburgh University that her passion for rowing was truly ignited.
Winning silver medals at the Sydney, Athens and Beijing Olympics, Katherine finally ceased to be the sport's eternal bridesmaid when, with her partner Anna Watkins, she won gold in the Double Sculls at the 2012 London Olympics. After two years away from the sport, Katherine returned in 2014, to win her fourth silver and fifth overall Olympic medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics with her new partner, Vicky Thornley.
Alongside her sporting achievements, she gained an Honours degree in Law from Edinburgh, a Masters in Medical Law from Glasgow University and was awarded a PhD in Homicide Sentencing from King's College London in 2013. She was made the fourth Chancellor of Oxford Brookes University in 2015 and became a Dame in the 2017 New Year Honours.

Aasmah Mir follows their fortunes and find out what it takes to make it motor sport.
In a multi-million pound industry, she discovers it is not just dedication you need, but very deep pockets.
With dreams of becoming Formula One Champion, teenagers Alex Lynn and Oliver Rowland are team-mates and rivals racing in the British Formula Renault UK Championship.
Aasmah goes trackside to join them on the important first race weekend of the championship at Brands Hatch.
Off track, she goes behind-the-scenes in the pit, where the drivers psych themselves up for the race and parents nervously wait to see who will make it to pole position and onto the podium.
She also hears from world champions and international stars Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button on their journey to that pinnacle of achievement.
From very different backgrounds, 17-year old Alex from Essex only passed his driving test last October and is financially supported by family and sponsors. 18-year old karting champion Oliver, whose father died last year, recently moved from his home in Sheffield to Northampton to pursue his career and is funded by a racing foundation, as well as working in the Silverstone shop.
For these two teenagers, motor racing is a way of life.
Both are part of the British Racing Drivers Club's Superstars scheme, a mentoring programme, which recognises emerging talent and potential champions. But in a hugely competitive sport, the stakes are high, with very few succeeding to the top.

TUE 09:00 Meet David Sedaris (m001k121)
Series 9
4. Eat the Rich!
"I told him that I followed a strict hegan diet. “Vegan?” he asked. “No,” I said. “Hegan. I only eat things that were male. I’m hoping that’s all clearly marked on your menu.”
Three shorter comic essays, in this week's show: In "Eat The Rich", David Sedaris plays with the modern world of often highly particular dietary requirements, where almost anything can be ‘a thing, now’. His commencement speech to the students of Oberlin College in the USA is re-lived in "A Speech To The Graduates" with a very particular and characteristically unorthodox array of lifestyle steers - including the choice of scented candles and the importance of saying thank you. Finally, "Best Wishes" throws light on his experiences signing books for his readers.
With sardonic wit and incisive social critiques, the globetrotting, trash-picking, aisle-rolling storyteller has become one of America’s pre-eminent humour writers. Sedaris has recently been enrolled into the prestigious American Academy of Arts and Letters.

TUE 10:30 A Fork in the Road (b09djg67)
Sheep farmer Ken Wild lives on an island in an 18th century farmhouse.
Not unusual - except that this island is surrounded by the six lanes of the trans-Pennine M62 motorway.
In a tapestry of words, sound and specially composed music, we reveal the extraordinary story of Ken and his wife Beth.
We also enter the minds of the motorists who regularly pass their farm, which sits marooned in the middle of the motorway.
The simplicity of Ken's existence contrasts with the complexity of the modern lives carried by the motorway. The two worlds frequently collide - often with fatal consequences.
Presented by Gary O'Donaghue.

Life
Bridget Christie turns her attention to Mortality.
Like many of us forced to work from home during Covid lockdown, Bridget recorded this series herself in her house, and in her local park, on a pre-sanitised recording device sent to her in the post. Batteries weren’t included. She had to buy them all herself.
In a collection of informative, personal and absurd recordings, she confronts the difficult questions most of us spend our lives avoiding - all whilst being interrupted by cats, bad WiFi, life admin and her own dead self from beyond the grave.
"Does life have meaning?", "How do you live in the moment?", "Why is life like a washing machine cycle?" and "What's that dog barking at?"
If you are mortal, then this is the show for you.

THU 10:30 The British Reggae Revolution (b00wr7rw)
In the late 1970s, there was an explosion of bands that completely connected with disenchanted youth all over Britain.
They sang about isolation and rejection from a society that didn't understand them. But it wasn't punk music, it was reggae.
Groups like Aswad, Steel Pulse, Matumbi and Misty in Roots were formed by first generation, British-born blacks who eloquently voiced the fear and anguish of growing up in a predominantly white society.
Brought up on British pop and their parents' records, they combined a punk attitude with a Jamaican reggae sound. Their efforts to become successful mirrored thousands of young black kids across the UK who were coping with a right-wing backlash to the influx of Caribbean immigrants.
The National Front were stirring up racial hatred and the government's SUS law resulted in hundreds of black people stopped and searched on the mere suspicion of committing a crime. It wasn't long before there was rioting in the streets. The British reggae bands provided the soundtrack to that struggle.
Back then Don Letts - now a Grammy Award winning film maker - was the resident DJ at the infamous Roxy Club, credited with turning the punks on to reggae. A first generation, British-born black himself, he had a front row seat watching this burgeoning scene produce hit making artists.
From the politicised heavy roots of bands like Steel Pulse to the smooth pop hits of Lovers' Rock, Don examines how Britain produced its very own reggae revolution.

The Gospel of Grime
Contemporary black music has always had a boundary pushing relationship with black church traditions.
From gospel singers like Kirk Franklin, to grime artists like Stormzy; who brought the house down at Glastonbury 2019 with an emotional rendition of his song Blinded By Your Grace. In it, he praises God, saying “Lord, I've been broken / Although I'm not worthy / You fixed me.”
Fans love that musicians like Stormzy portray their real life experiences alongside expressions of their faith. Other people claim genres like grime and drill are incompatible with Christianity.
As the once niche scene for religious ministry within UK rap increasingly reaches the mainstream, music and culture journalist Jesse Bernard traces the relationship between secular music and black churches in the UK.
He looks at how colonialism and slavery shaped the role music plays in black Christian faith communities. And with the help of theologians and musicians, he explores why issues of social justice are frequently left unaddressed within the Church.
Jesse examines how long-standing social inequality and the current policy of austerity have impacted both black churches and the music being made by black artists in the UK.
And he asks - is it so controversial for our everyday lives and our spiritual lives to be explored, side by side, in popular music?
