SAT 00:00 Soul Music (b00zsdsn)
Mahler's Adagietto
Gustav Mahler wrote his 5th Symphony during the summers of 1901 and 1902.
The Adagietto is the 4th movement which is thought to have been inspired by falling in love with Alma who he married around this time.
This single movement is the composer’s most well-known piece of music. It was famously used in the 1971 Luchino Visconti film Death in Venice. It was also conducted by Leonard Bernstein at the mass at St Patrick's Cathedral, New York on the day of the burial of Robert Kennedy.
Composer David Matthews explains the significance of this piece in Mahler's output.
Psychoanalyst Anthony Cantle describes listening to it with his mother during her last days of dementia.
Malcolm Reid tells how this piece signified a change in himself as a young man in the British police force with narrow, racist views, to hearing it in Australia and shifting him to becoming a liberal.
And Helen Epstein explains why it was played at her mother's funeral.

How Success Ruined Me by Christopher Green
Roy Hudd and Christopher Green tell the lost story of music hall idol, Fred Barnes.
They discover the perils of applause in a comic conversation at Wilton's Music Hall in London.
Fred was a queer icon and music hall star 'in the Greek style', who topped the national circuit in 1911. At the height of his fame, he would be seen about town in his trademark white suit and hat, with a pet marmoset on his shoulder.
But Fred's tragic family history, sudden success and enormous wealth were too hard to handle. His addictions and flamboyant offstage adventures proved his ruin, and after being branded 'a menace to His Majesty's fighting forces', Fred was banned from the stage by his employers.
He sold his memoir 'How Success Ruined Me' to the papers, but was last seen in Southend pubs, singing any song for a drink - now with a chicken perched on his shoulder.
Chris and Roy play out (and argue about, and rewrite) the vital moments from Fred's private and public life, while reflecting frankly on the perils of applause, addiction and identity in their own performing lives - with jokes, chat and songs.

The audience, meanwhile, contribute questions about countries on the equator, wordless national anthems, and matching flags.

Explorer Steve Backshall is castaway by Lauren Laverne.
Steve's BAFTA-winning programmes bring viewers of every generation closer to nature - from the children's series Deadly 60, featuring close encounters with the most dangerous and venomous creatures on earth, to Blue Planet Live and Springwatch.
His interest in the natural world began at a young age, after his parents decided to swap their terraced house for a smallholding with goats, ducks and geese.
His big break as a broadcaster arrived when National Geographic offered him the post of Adventurer in Residence and he’s been taking on the most arduous challenges and toughest environments on earth ever since. He ran a marathon in the Sahara and has swum cage-free with great white sharks.
His adventures have also brought him many near-death moments. He broke his back while rock climbing and recently almost drowned while kayaking in Bhutan.

Born in Shooter's Hill and educated at Wellington College, Algernon Blackwood had a varied career, farming in Canada, operating a hotel, and working as a newspaper reporter in New York City before moving to England and starting to write horror stories.
He was very successful, writing 10 books of short stories and appearing on both radio and TV to tell them. He also wrote 14 novels and a number of plays, most of which were produced but not published. He was an avid nature lover and many of his stories reflect this.

2. The Breast Cancer Gene
Dr Kat Arney finds out what we are made of one gene at a time.
For centuries doctors have noticed that some types of cancer seem to run in families, but it was only recently that we've started to pin down the genetic culprits.
One of these hit the headlines in 2013 when actress Angelina Jolie announced she had a defect in the BRCA1 gene, which can significantly increase the chances of developing breast, ovarian or prostate cancer.
Jolie had breast removal surgery in order to reduce her risk of getting ill.
So how does it feel to find out you carry a faulty BRCA gene?
What can you do about it? And could new research into these genes help lead to revolutionary new cancer treatments?
Dr Kat Arney speaks to:
* Caitlin Brodnick, author of "Dangerous Boobies: Breaking Up with My Time-Bomb Breasts"
* Cancer researcher, Dr Serena Nik-Zainal of Cambridge University.

"The number-one-selling brand within the mature woman's weekly magazine sector"
The life and changing times of WOMAN'S WEEKLY - as it celebrated its centenary in 2011 - a period of unprecedented economic turmoil in the publishing industry.
Back in the 1980s, the magazine was an anachronism - very old school, very pink, catch-lined "Famed for its Knitting".
Journalist Clare Jenkins held a variety of roles on the magazine from a spell as "The Man Who Sees" to covering for the astrologer (after they had a heart attack).
For the rest of the time, she was a sub-editor and celebrity interviewer, ranging from Hollywood stars like Joan Fontaine and Gloria Grahame, to Jenny Agutter and Nicholas Parsons. The knitting department made balaclavas and sleeveless jumpers for models like Roger Moore and Sandra Howard.
It was decidedly mono-cultural, too - an edict from on high forbade the use of non-white faces. It also forbade any mention of sex, so fictional heroines were virginal, while letters mentioning sexual difficulties had to be rewritten before appearing on the problem page.
The magazine achieved a different kind of status after being immortalised in a Victoria Wood song ..."beat me on the bottom with the Woman's Weekly".
Clare takes an affectionate but sharp-edged look at everybody's granny's favourite cup-of-tea read.
How has it managed to survive?

I Don't Believe You by Robert Forrest
On the 17th May, 1966 Bob Dylan played Manchester Free Trade Hall - one of the most famous (or infamous) concerts in rock history.
Anger and loathing surrounded Dylan on that 1966 tour.
Many felt betrayed because he was leaving the folk tradition behind by turning electric. One heckler shouted “Judas”.
Robert Forrest’s play focuses on events just outside the concert hall, as two young Dylan fans meet by chance, each wrestling with a more personal sense of betrayal.
Catriona is Irish, charming and a spinner of yarns. Davey, a shipyard apprentice from Glasgow, finds her fascinating, but he believes dishonesty is all around him: is Catriona just another liar?
But, then, what is Davey doing with a wad of stolen bank notes?

Dylan and the Ferry
New Generation Thinker and Bob Dylan fan Dafydd Mills Daniel, investigates the story behind the iconic image of Bob Dylan on the poster for the 2005 documentary 'No Direction Home' directed by Martin Scorsese.
It's a black and white photo of Dylan on a small car ferry. The ferry was called The Severn Princess and it transported drivers across the River Severn, between England and Wales. Dylan was using the Aust Ferry to take his new electric guitar and sound into Wales.
Dafydd returns to the actual scene of the photograph in the company of Tim Ryan and Sue Kingdom, who are running a campaign to preserve The Severn Princess, which is docked on a beach near Chepstow.
He also talks to Richard F. Thomas, author of Why Dylan Matters, about the so-called "Judas Tour".

Anthony Burgess: A Clockwork Archive
Anthony Burgess is best known as the author of A Clockwork Orange, first published in 1962.
Burgess was born in 1917 in one of the poorest areas of North Manchester. It was entirely unpredictable that such a major literary figure and polymath would spring from such a humble background.
He remained in Manchester until he graduated from the University, but never went back to live there and was careful to disguise his Northern accent.
Paul Morley - a fellow Northern exile - visits some of the key landmarks of Burgess's early life - Xaverian College where he was taught by strict Catholics from the Xaverian Brothers; the Free Trade Hall where he heard the Hallé Orchestra; Central Library where he began a lifelong process of self-education.
Paul also considers Burgess's continuing passion for writing classical music; his first creative ambition was to be a composer. He wrote over 200 pieces of classical music, including full-length symphonies and a ballet. Very little of his music was performed during his lifetime, but it is now attracting interest from musicians and academics.
Burgess's legacy includes not only 33 published novels, two autobiographies and a large amount of journalism but a previously unheard archive of about 800 audio cassettes and home movies.
Paul Morley visits The International Anthony Burgess Foundation in Manchester, which is cataloguing this rich, diverse and remarkable archive.
Contributors include:
* Dr Andrew Biswell, biographer of Anthony Burgess and Director of The International Anthony Burgess Foundation
* Paul Philips, author of a book about Burgess's music
* Dr Kevin Malone, an expert on the music Burgess himself wrote for his own dramatised version of A Clockwork Orange

Geoff Norcott's Working Men's Club S2
S2 E4: 'Er Indoors
Geoff Norcott examines modern masculinity in this second series of his stand-up show, by creating the safe space of a working men’s club so he can speak freely about the problems men are facing and how we might go about fixing them in a way that benefits everyone.
This week, Geoff looks at men in a romantic relationship with women - and why they aren’t honest about their partner’s faults. Is there a social taboo around men admitting to problems in their relationships, or are women just better than men so there’s less to complain about?
As ever, these serious points are intercut with “manly hypotheticals”, the sort of questions men ask each other to avoid talking about stuff that matters, like - would you rather duel Jacob Rees-Mogg with a sword or a pistol?

Dr Kat Arney finds out what we are made of one gene at a time.
Alzheimer's is a devastating disease - so would you want to know whether it lies in your future? Some online tests say they can tell you how likely you are to develop it, based on which version you have of a single gene. But can we really believe the stats? Would you want to know your own risk level? And what good, bad - and just plain weird - responses do people have to finding out?
Dr Kat Arney makes up her mind about whether to take the test, with the help of social scientist Dr Richard Milne and genetic counsellor Professor Anna Middleton.

THU 10:30 My Empire Of Dust (b012r7jx)
Cologne-based artist Wolfgang Stoecker has collected samples of dust from historic buildings across Europe and beyond.
With the help of scientists and an electro-microscope at Augsburg University, he’s analysed the dust and discovered it contains tiny fossils, dust from the Sahara, pollutants of various kinds and human debris.
Aeolian research, research into dust particles and sediments, is an established branch of geographical study, often concerned with the history and future of climate change, desertification and landscape erosion.
But as Wolfgang has discovered, dust can also tell us something about human culture.
John Campbell is the Dean's Verger at Lincoln Cathedral. He received Wolfgang's initial email with some scepticism but it made sense too, because dust is often on his mind as the person responsible for the upkeep of this great building.
He collected two samples for Wolfgang's collection: 'secular' dust near the entrance, where the traffic of feet is greatest, and 'sacred' dust, near the altar, where traces of candles, incense and sacred silverware are to be found.
Everyone leaves a trace of themselves behind in the dust.

4. The Lord I Shot
Brighty’s decision to right a wrong – killing a man in a duel – leads to a bust-up with Babs. Whilst she goes full tilt for revolution, Brighty and Churley are left mentoring a young proto-rake. Will the schism in the gang ever be repaired?
Lord Christian Brighty is the talk of the Regency 'Ton' - a celebrated libertine, a heartthrob and a hero to many. But close-up, he is a spoilt, impetuous, life-ruining bastard… Or at least he was. Because his carefree life of infinite privilege has been upended by an encounter with his new chambermaid - the uneducated but forthright Babigail - who became the first person to tell him the unvarnished truth about his selfish behaviour. Overnight, his lifelong trust that everyone loved him had been replaced with a gnawing fear that Babs was right.
So now, with his narcissism collapsing and a need to prove to Babs he is actually a good person, Lord Brighty is determined to fix all his past wrongs. And by extension all the ills of Regency society. Accompanying him in his quest are Babs (elevated beyond her station to a chambermaid-cum-adviser role), and his butler, Mr Churlington. Although Churley would prefer everything to stay exactly as it used to be (as would all Brighty’s friends, family and the entirety of high society).

5. The Cyclops Gene
Dr Kat Arney finds out what we are made of one gene at a time.
What links cyclops lambs, poisonous flowers, and six-toed cats? They're all involved in the story of a gene called Sonic Hedgehog - yes, that is its real name – which has its genetic fingers in all kinds of developmental processes.
Sonic Hedgehog helps to decide how many bits you have, where they go, and whether you’re symmetrical, so it’s not surprising that when Sonic makes mistakes there can be serious consequences.
We take a look at the mind-bogglingly intricate process of creating a body, and the key role our favourite blue hero plays in making sure everything goes to plan.
Dr Kat Arney is joined by hedgehog experts:
* Dr Bob Riddle of the US National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke
* Professor Robert Hill of Edinburgh University

FRI 10:30 The Symbols of Bliss (b08y26qf)
Charles Bliss was a remarkable utopian visionary.
His experiences as a young witness to the pogroms and then Dachau and Buchenwald made him determined to put all his effort into finding a means of bringing about peace between nations.
His big inspiration was his belief that conflict arose when people misunderstood each other, or misinterpreted the other’s language.
A new visual language based on ideograms would, he felt, prevent such misunderstanding - and he spent years both perfecting and then trying to sell his new system, which he named Semantography and which has become commonly known as Blissymbolics.
As Michael Symmons Roberts will explain, Bliss and his wife Claire sent thousands of letters to academics and librarians across the world without success, but then decades later his language was taken up in an entirely unexpected way - as a means of communicating with children with cerebral palsy.
Sadly this apparent turn of good fortune did not lead to a happy ending, and Bliss died an apparently frustrated and lonely man.
Nonetheless, as Michael will explain, he was a great utopian visionary whose determined effort to change the world single-handedly might not have finally paid off, but he left a great legacy behind in his linguistic achievement and in the thousands whom he helped to communicate with the world.
Michael meets one of those people, Peter Zein, as well as Shirley McNaughton, the nurse who was one of the key figures in applying Blissymbolics to special needs education, and Brian Stride, a personal friend and admirer of Bliss.
