These offer a glimpse into the mind and process of the iconic and influential writer, Joan Didion.

Mostly drawn from the earliest part of her five-decade career, the wide-ranging pieces in our selection include Didion writing about a Gamblers Anonymous meeting, a visit to San Simeon, and a reunion of WWII veterans in Las Vegas, and about topics ranging from Nancy Reagan to Robert Mapplethorpe.

Tongue and Talk: The Dialect Poets - East Lincolnshire

Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's poetry archive and selects Tongue and Talk: The Dialect Poets - East Lincolnshire exploring poetry from the county.

Alan Mumby, Chairman of Far Welter’d, the East Lincolnshire Dialect Society, explores dialect poetry written and spoken in his native county.

The Society’s name has Danish roots, referring to a sheep that’s fallen on its back and is struggling to recover - and Alan asks whether Lincolnshire dialect, so rarely featured in today’s media, is in similar distress.

Travelling to the tiny hamlet of Somersby, he visits the birthplace of the county’s most famous poet, Alfred Lord Tennyson, whose little-known dialect poetry reveals his cherished memories of the villagers who he grew up with.

Many members of Far Welter’d are themselves poets – like Wolds farmer Andy Robinson (aka Billy Woldsworth) and George Danby, who farms on the Fens. Alan talks to them about their writing and how dialect varies throughout the area. While enthusiastic ‘yeller-belly’ Rod Stones discusses the influence of his Danish ancestors on the dialect he speaks today, and Maureen Sutton, Lincolnshire’s Poet Laureate, explores the changing perceptions of dialect in our modern world.

Presented by Alan Mumby

MON 09:30 Classified Britain (m0007bc2)
Series 2

Edinburgh Evening Courant 14 April 1827

James Naughtie finds the heartbeat of history in the front page small ads of old UK newspapers.

The classified ads of the Edinburgh Evening Courant of April the 14th 1827 reveal the importance of the port of Leith - with direct passenger routes to Elsinore and St Petersburg.

Plus a public lecture intended to debunk Phrenology - the idea that an individual’s character can be determined from the shape of their skull, and Walter Scott, Europe's most prolific author, hoping to stay out of the new Bridewell debtor's prison.

Front page news is a relatively late addition to the newspaper business.

For most of their first couple of centuries, British newspapers carried classified ads rather than news on their front page. They transformed the hustle and bustle of the marketplace into newsprint, so you could take it home or to the inn to pore over at your leisure.

James travels the country discovering how these front page ads give us a snapshot of time and place.

He explores how they weave national and local life together - the heartbeat of history rolling daily or weekly off the presses.

TUE 09:00 Nature Table (m002tpq6)
Series 5

1: Puffins, Armadillos and the Badass Tongue-Eating Louse

In this first episode of a new series, puffins’ super beaks and the badass Tongue-eating water louse wow and stupefy the team.

‘Sue Perkins’ Nature Table - possibly the funniest “natural science” series, ever.’ Pick of the Week, The Telegraph

For this new series of Sue Perkins’ ARIA-winning ‘Show and Tell’ wildlife comedy, Team Nature Table is joined by special guests: comedian Amy Gledhill, zoologist Lucy Cooke and entomologist Professor Karim Vahed of Buglife.

This episode’s varied subjects include: Puffins and their disposable beaks, Snails’ love darts, intrepid Armadillos and the fiendishly parasitic Tongue-eating louse.

Nature Table has a simple clear brief: to positively celebrate our planet’s wonderfully wild (and funny) flora and fauna in a fun accessible way... whilst at the same time having a giggle.

TUE 09:30 Classified Britain (m0007khr)
Series 2

Hampshire Advertiser, 9 August 1856

James Naughtie unearths the heartbeat of history from another newspaper front page of classified ads.

The Hampshire Advertiser of Saturday August 9th 1856.

Trustees are advertising for survivors and dependents of those who died when the troopship, HMS Birkenhead, went down and introduced "women and children first" into the culture.

Steam is replacing sail at sea, there's back breaking labour in the fields and an ad for corsets reveals unexpected aspects of lacing.

Front page news is a relatively late addition to the newspaper business. For most of their first couple of centuries, British newspapers carried classified ads rather than news on their front page.

They transformed the hustle and bustle of the marketplace into newsprint, so you could take it home or to the inn to pore over at your leisure.

James Naughtie travels the country discovering how these front page ads give us a snapshot of time and place.

He explores how they weave national and local life together - the heartbeat of history rolling daily or weekly off the presses.

TUE 10:30 Death Masks: The Undying Face (b0939wgs)
Sculptor and musician Nick Reynolds has revived the art of creating death masks.

Coming across Oliver Cromwell’s death mask on a school trip to Warwick Castle, Nick instantly became fascinated with the idea that you can stare at the actual facial features of a historical person.

He now owns the death masks of many famous people from Ned Kelly and Napoleon to Ken Russell and Ronnie Biggs. They decorate every wall in his flat, but he views them not as a macabre way of remembering the dead but as “a kind of time machine”.

In recent years, Nick has turned his artistic talents towards producing death masks and his portfolio includes the masks of William Rees-Mogg, Peter O’Toole and Sebastian Horsley.

Their nearest and dearest give their different reactions to the ‘undying face’ of the person they have lost.

Nick also visits London’s Highgate Cemetery to discuss our attitude to death and describes the death masks which adorn the gravestones of his father and of impresario Malcolm McLaren.

WED 22:45 Heidi Regan: No Worries (m000xdqz)
Episode 1

As someone who tends to worry in 'normal' times, the pandemic has of course offered some exciting new areas of exploration for the anxious mind.

Having a partner who is a GP has both helped and not helped Heidi with that: worrying about her being safe, but also, yay, on tap medical advice!

That said, examining rashes of a loved one over dinner isn’t really the romance her partner signed up for.

As Heidi and her partner ponder some of the big questions in life, Heidi's brain resorts, as it always does, to distracting them (and the audience) with increasingly silly jokes as she makes an argument for the pros and cons of joking your way through life.

In this episode, Heidl ponders whether repressing her worries is better than sharing them.

Written and performed by Heidi Regan.

With thanks to Nick Elleray.

Series 2

5. The Politics of Denial

The cheese is locked up. The Navy can't sail to a war. Reform won't touch the triple lock pension. And nobody, apparently, has anything to answer for. Top political comedian Matt Forde convenes his Focus Group in front of a live theatre audience with a forensically matched panel — journalist and author Helen Lewis, conservative commentator Tim Montgomerie, and former SNP MP Mhairi Black — to ask whether denial has become the default setting in British politics.

From a shoplifting epidemic that politicians have decided not to notice, to the vast gap between Britain's naval self-image and its actual capacity to put to sea, and the cross-party conspiracy of silence around a pension policy everyone suspects is unaffordable but nobody will touch, this is an episode about the uncomfortable distance between what politicians know and what they're prepared to say.

THU 09:30 Classified Britain (m0007wv6)
Series 2

Oxford Times, 7 May 1926

James Naughtie finds the heartbeat of history in the front page small ads of old UK newspapers.

The classified ads in the Oxford Times of May 7th 1926, the midpoint of the General Strike, spell out the state of emergency and announce a rally at which Labour MP, Oliver Baldwin, son of the Conservative Prime Minister, will speak in support of the strike.

The Morris car plant has displaced the University as the city's biggest employer and the Jane Austin Agency is recruiting battalions of domestic staff.

Front page news is a relatively late addition to the newspaper business. For most of their first couple of centuries, British newspapers carried classified ads rather than news on their front page. They transformed the hustle and bustle of the marketplace into newsprint, so you could take it home or to the inn to pore over at your leisure.

James Naughtie travels the country discovering how these front page ads give us a snapshot of time and place, exploring how they weave national and local life together - the heartbeat of history rolling daily or weekly off the presses.

Producer: John Forsyth

Purple Rain

"I never meant to cause you any sorrow, I never meant to cause you any pain..."

True stories of what Prince's epic ballad means to different people around the world, from the very first jam in 1983 to the global hit that reigns over us today.

Bobby Z, the drummer from Prince and The Revolution, remembers the buzz of the first ever performance of Purple Rain, and how the recording from that night lives on.

Susan Rogers, Prince's recording engineer, tells stories from the Purple Rain tour, when the crew took bets on how long Prince's guitar solos would last.

Comedian Sindhu Vee first heard the song as a teenager growing up in India and was knocked sideways by it.

Weather reporter Judith Ralston describes the beautiful and rare weather phenomenon of purple rain.

Social historian Zaheer Ali sees the song as a cry out for change, bringing audiences from different backgrounds together in cross-genre harmony.

And finally, an intensive care hospital nurse played Purple Rain to Kevin Clarke while he was in a coma, because his sister knew he loved the song and hoped it might pull him through.

FRI 10:30 A Portrait Of... (b09b0shf)
Edward Watson

Follow artist Fiona Graham-Mackay as she paints a portrait of Edward Watson, Principal of the Royal Ballet.

The relationship between an artist and her sitter is unique, a bit like being in the therapist's chair. The painter stripping away the layers to reveal the true likeness of her subject and, in the hush of the studio, conversations meander in unexpected ways.

"It's an adventure - waiting to see what comes out."

While Fiona sketches and paints, we hear about Edward's life as a ballet dancer, overcoming his self-doubt, being an introverted performer, and those lonely moments on stage in front of an audience.

Fiona Graham-Mackay has painted hundreds of portraits, including Prince Michael of Kent, Seamus Heaney and Lord Carrington.
