SAT 00:00 Soul Music (b0418kfw)
Myfanwy
The hauntingly beautiful Welsh song Myfanwy 'is in the air in Wales' according to singer Cerys Matthews.
She along with others discuss what the melodic tale of unrequited love means to them.
They include a Welsh woman living in Sicily for whom the song represents 'hiraeth', a longing or homesickness for Wales and another who believes it expresses the 'wounded soul of the Welsh'.
A man remembers how his late brother and he used to sing it in pubs in North Wales and how the song symbolises the unrequited love he felt for him.
The Ynysowen choir was started after the Aberfan mining disaster as a way of dealing with the emotion. Choir members talk about the song's power, and an ex-soldier recalls digging for survivors with lines from it playing in his head:
"Give me your hand, my sweet Myfanwy".
Series about pieces of music with a powerful emotional impact.
Producer: Maggie Ayre
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in April 2014.
SAT 00:30 Pepys the Musician (b08kv3y8)
Lucie Skeaping tells the story of post-diary Samuel Pepys through the music he commissioned, some of it played for the first time in 300 years.
The songs, written for the celebrated diarist by his continental music master Cesare Morelli, provide fresh insight into both the man and the religious struggles of the 17th century, which enshrined aspects of our modern political system and shaped our national identity.
Lucie explores the relationship between Pepys and Morelli, a friendship which survived throughout a supposed Popish Plot to assassinate Charles II and the public terror and hysteria it created, implicating hundreds of innocent people. Pepys was among them - and by hiding his Catholic music master he faced execution for high treason.
Until now, the Morelli manuscripts for Pepys's voice and guitar have remained obscure and impenetrable. Enter Dionysios Kyropoulos, researcher and stage director who, as a bass singer and amateur lutenist like Pepys, found himself uniquely placed to interpret the music Morelli wrote for his master.
At the heart of the programme is a concert of Morelli's works, made possible by Dionysios, and heard for the first time since the compositions were played and sung by Pepys himself.
Featuring Bass Baritone David Ireland, Baroque Guitarist Toby Carr, and Theorbo player James Bramley.
Producer: Anna Scott-Brown.

He uses the histories behind each - where they come from, how they’re cooked and consumed and what they mean to different cultures - to explore economic theories.

SAT 10:00 Conversation Extra (m002s2wg)
Omnibus: AL Rowse
4 Extra delves deep in the BBC Archive for another classic interview.
Dr Alfred Leslie Rowse - AL Rowse - is one of Britain's best known, and most controversial, historians – specialising in 16th century England.
His reputation rests on such books as the England of Elizabeth, The Expansion of Elizabethan England and the Elizabethans and America....
Michael Oliver asks him about his life, and some of the people he knew.
These include Bertrand Russell, Clement Attlee, HG Wells and Winston Churchill.
Dr Rowse’s forays from history into fields usually of the preserve to the literary critics have provided some of the controversy - sacrilege to some - modernising the text of William Shakespeare’s plays to make them more accessible to the present-day reader....
But Dr Rowse's interest go far beyond Tudor England.
He’s a poet and has published many books not about the first Elizabethan age. One of the best known is ‘A Cornish Childhood’.
Dr Rowse is Cornishman and very proud of Cornwall. His most recent book ‘Glimpses of the Great’ is a series of pen portraits of famous people he has known in his long life. He’s now in his 80s.
AL Rowse died in 1997, aged 93.
First broadcast on the BBC World Service in April 1985.
SAT 10:30 Frankly Speaking (b05ndh2t)
Evelyn Waugh
Brideshead Revisited author Evelyn Waugh is grilled about his life and career by a panel of three:
* Charles Wilmot
* Jack Davies
* Stephen Black
Regarded as one of the most brilliant novelists of his day, Waugh loathed the BBC.
His grandson Alexander believes that this interview, along with a cocktail of sleeping draughts, helped to send him "rather mad". The author later turned his experience on Frankly Speaking into a scene in his novel 'The Ordeal of Gilbert Pinfold' with Stephen Black becoming the character Angel who haunts Pinfold in his hallucinations.
Launched in 1952 on the BBC Home Service, Frankly Speaking was a novel, ground breaking series. Unrehearsed and unscripted, the traditional interviewee/interviewer pairing was initially jettisoned for three interviewers firing direct questions - straight to the point.
Early critics described it as 'unkempt', 'an inquisition' and described the guest as prey being cornered, quarry being pursued - with calls to axe the unscripted interview. But the format won out and eventually won over its detractors.
Unknown or very inexperienced broadcasters were employed as interviewers, notably John Freeman, John Betjeman, Malcolm Muggeridge, Harold Hobson, Penelope Mortimer, Elizabeth Beresford and Katherine Whitehorn.
Only about 40 of the original 100 programmes survive.
First broadcast on the BBC Home Service in November 1953.

The Black Chair
Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's poetry archive and to mark St David's Day selects The Black Chair - the compelling story of the Welsh poet Hedd Wynn.
In September 1917, in a ceremony whose power and emotion still resonates in Wales a century later, a remarkably beautiful chair, crafted by a Belgian refugee, was awarded to Hedd Wyn for his winning poem 'Yr Arwr' (The Hero).
Before being conscripted into the army, he had been a shepherd, who had attended school for only nine years.
When the winning entry was announced at the 1917 Eisteddfod, the trumpets were sounded for the author to identify himself.
After three summons, it was announced to a stunned audience that the poet was absent because he’d been killed in action, weeks earlier.
In the presence of the Prime Minister Lloyd George, the empty chair was draped in a black sheet, and sent on to Hedd Wyn's parents.
The event is referred to as the Eisteddfod of the Black Chair, and is the continued focal point for Wales's commemorations of the First World War.
Poet Mab Jones visits Hedd Wyn's family farm in Snowdonia and she talks to chair winners Twm Morys and Mererid Hopwood, and historian Aled Eirug, to find out why the event still holds such significance in Wales.

In this series, Timandra takes a range of topics, to examine how clashes of interests, competing moral visions, factual disputes, arguments about strategies and even different personal preferences over which film to watch at the cinema can all be managed better.

MON 10:30 In Search of the Singing Postman (b00tmlh2)
Writer DJ Taylor grew up in Norfolk.
When he was missing his roots, he'd put on a record by Allan Smethurst, The Singing Postman, to remind him of home.
Smethurst is best known for one song - Have You Got A Loight Boy.
By the mid 1960's he featured on the pop chart, just behind The Moody Blues. With his goofy smile and postman's uniform, he was the one hit wonder to end all one hit wonders.
But DJ Taylor believes he was something far more than that.
Taylor argues that the songs turn out, not to be novelty numbers, but plaintive celebrations of a kind of lost, rural life that had begun to disappear, even as it was committed to vinyl.
His songs are firmly rooted in the traditional ballads of Norfolk. His work is the last gasp of a genuinely popular art form, before it went down amid the onslaught of post-war mass culture.
There were even plans to send Smethurst to Nashville, the idea being that 'Country and Eastern' would appeal to the US audience. Smethurst admired the early American greats like Jimmie Rodgers and The Carter Family - their playing influenced his own lilting guitar style.
Discover the story of Smethurst's brief dalliance with fame and his steady fall into obscurity as he struggled with alcohol addiction.
DJ Taylor pays tribute to the man who loved Norfolk, and through his songs preserved the memories and language of an entire way of life.
Produced at BBC Manchester by Nicola Swords.

Richard Rogers, Catalyst
Tom Dyckhoff looks back through the archive at the life and work of Richard Rogers, the architect who changed the face of modern Britain.
When Rogers died in December 2021, he was arguably the most accomplished architect on the planet, known for designing spectacular, hi-tech buildings - flamboyant experiments like the Pompidou Centre and Lloyds of London, their guts on the outside - and municipal centrepieces like the Millennium Dome and the Senedd in Cardiff. But he also challenged and refined our ideas about public space.
It wasn't just about buildings. Throughout his career, Rogers spoke of an ethical underpinning to his work – he talked of city spaces for people and of architecture at the heart of a vibrant civil society. This became most clearly articulated when he was Chair of New Labour's Urban Task Force, which advocated a 'cities-first' policy, putting the brakes on building in the suburbs in favour of focusing construction on the centre of towns and cities.
Since the late 1970s, when the Pompidou Centre and its attendant public square was completed, British cities have changed hugely. Strange and spectacular buildings now seem to be the norm, as are mixed use, post-industrial developments. Richard Rogers was a herald of what was to come. The skateboarders clattering around Central Square in Cardiff or the families around the sandpit on the South Bank in summer might not realise it, but, in a sense, they're living in Richard Rogers' world. In some ways we all are.
Featuring: Huw Clarke, Gillian Darley, Norman Foster, Alice MacGillivray, Douglas Murphy, Anne Power and Ruth Rogers.
With grateful thanks to Joseph Henry and Victoria Lane.
Producer: Martin Williams

Episode 5
The ninth series of John Finnemore's Souvenir Programme is very different to the previous eight. It's still written by John Finnemore, "one of our best sketch writers", (The Observer), and performed by him with "a great supporting cast. But, with no live studio audience for this series, John has taken the opportunity to try something completely new.
Every episode in this series of Souvenir Programme is made up of scenes from one person's life, played in reverse order.
There's no narrative to the episode; it's still a sketch show, not a sitcom... but the sketches in each episode all happened to one person, played by one member of the cast, over the course of their lifetime.
This week concerns Newt, following his life backwards from a funeral in 1990 to an eventful Christmas dinner in 1898.

Russell Grant on Ivor Novello
Astrologer and performer Russell Grant chooses one of the greatest screen legends of cinema's early years – Ivor Novello.
Born in 1893 in Cardiff, Novello was also a talented writer and composer and would dominate both screen and stage with his epic romantic fantasies, until his death in 1951.
Russell is joined by Richard Stirling, author of the stage biography of Novello, Love, from Ivor, and the adaptor of one of Novello's last productions, Gay's the Word.

THU 10:30 The Ballad of Stooky Bill (m000sq69)
The first face to be seen on a television screen wasn't human. The image which assembled itself out of the static in John Logie Baird's first experimental TV test was a chalk-white ventriloquist's dummy with a lolling hinged mouth, reduced to grey on the cramped monochrome screen.
Stooky Bill was selected for the first screen test because his face was a study in contrasts, and the lights of the first TV studio were so hot, no flesh and blood creature could bear it (over time Stooky Bill's face cracked in the heat and his singed hair fell apart). Since then, television has become our ubiquitous friend, the flat locus of our dreams and desires, a place of excitement, entertainment, but also shock, sometimes carnage, the place where celebrities frolic in the jungle, 9/11 was staged, where beheadings are screened.
It is almost as though the animating spirit of TV is not Apollo, but an anarchic, sinister dummy.
In John Burnside's commissioned poem, The Ballad of Stooky Bill, the dummy becomes the animating daemon of TV, the sinister force that drives the square window where our dreams, our desires, our darkest appetitive impulses play out 24/7.
Kirsty Wark interviews Alistair McGowan as Stooky Bill in a searing, unsettling vision of the pale, white face that inhabited the first television signal, and has never let go.

Ghost Town
Ghost Town was recorded by British two-tone band The Specials as a comment on urban decay and social unrest. It was released in June 1981 as riots were springing up around the UK and with the help of an iconic video it topped the UK singles charts. It was also be the band's final single.
Writer Alex Wheatle first heard 'Ghost Town' in 1981 whilst in a social services hostel in Brixton awaiting his court appearance. He'd been arrested following a day of action in Brixton to protest against racist treatment of Black people, after rumours of police brutality. He was sentenced to one year in prison and sang Ghost Town in his cell, as he began to find hope and purpose in his life.
Claire Horton grew up in Dudley and says Ghost Town echoed her experiences of watching the shops and nightclubs of this once vibrant town closing down. Her Dad was made redundant and it had a huge impact on her family, and as a young police officer she would walk the streets and understand why people were getting so frustrated with their situation.
Soul and Reggae DJ Dave Marshall Barrett traces the history of The Specials who formed in Dave's hometown of Coventry in 1977. It's the first thing people mention when he says where he comes from.
John Collins was surprised when Jerry Dammers asked him to produce the record. John created the initial opening 'ghostly' sounds on a synth at home but he says they now sound more like sirens. The song's success opened doors for John and he loves how it keeps finding new audiences.
Broadcaster Samira Ahmed grew up in London and said her the recession of the early 80s hit her family's catering business hard. Too young for nightclubs, she remembers the video of 'Ghost Town' playing on Top of the Pops and says the track made a huge impact on her understanding of music and politics.
Jazz singer Beverley Beirne covered Ghost Town for her 2018 album Jazz Just Wants to Have Fun and was reminded of it during the first lockdown when she wasn't able to perform.
Founder of The Specials Jerry Dammers reflects on the inspiration behind Ghost Town and how trombonist Rico Rodriguez was the heart and soul of the band.

FRI 10:30 Rock Transition (b08jb6s8)
For centuries musicians have defied gender boundaries to create some of the most evocative and provocative art and music.
Journalist and culture critic Laura Snapes joins the dots of a fascinating musical history that encompasses musical icons such as Ma Rainey, Little Richard, Lou Reed, the Pet Shop Boys, Grace Jones and Madonna, and looks at how today's musicians use music and performance to express who their own gender and sexuality.
In recent years the issue of gender and identity has been a hot topic in the musical landscape and beyond. From niche publications to tabloids and political debate, issues surrounding gender identity and how it influences both personal and social life have been widely publicised.
Amid the deeply complex personal world of gender identity and the often ruthlessly myopic world of the music industry, a new generation of artists are using music for fearless expressions of their gender and sexuality that break beyond the archetypes set by their forebears.
Rock Transition speaks with artists such as garage maverick Ezra Furman, Canadian pop stars Tegan and Sara, musician and author CN Lester, and musician and activist Ryan Cassata to understand why music offers an exciting platform to express and explore gender identity and sexuality - and asks how these artists can resist being marginalised and commodified by an industry keen to capitalise on a hot topic.

A darkly comic drama with three 60-something friends on an overnight ferry to Santander. They argue passionately over the course of the ferry journey returning to their expat life in Spain after attending the UK funeral of their friend Ken, who went home for a visit and would never come back.
Hywel, a loquacious Welshman, Irishman Jim from Lurgan and pugnacious ex-MP Malcolm from Glasgow are unlikely allies (and enforced drinking pals) in the small Spanish town they now call home. Fuelled by some indifferent Rioja and cheap Spanish brandy, through the course of a night they try - and fail - to come to terms with life, death, truth and Brexit.
Also on the ferry are Ken’s daughter Gemma and her partner Rashid, carrying the ashes of Ken, to scatter beneath an almond tree in his favourite spot near the village.
But Gemma is furious with her father for abandoning his English family and falling for a bartender more than half his age. She’s furious with her father’s so-called friends for encouraging him. And she’s quite cross with Rashid.
As the ferry heads for Spain and the sea gets rougher, secrets and motivations are revealed, showing nothing is quite as anyone believed and nobody is quite what they seem. Is home where you live, or where your heart is?
Neil McKay is a BAFTA award-winning dramatist.
