David Bowie - Life on Mars?
Life on Mars was released on David Bowie's Hunky Dory album in 1971.
Two years later it came out as a single in its own right. Famous for its exploration of disillusionment and alienation, there is no one single definitive story behind it. But that is perhaps the song's beauty and the secret behind its appeal - that its cryptic lyrics are open to interpretation, and can mean different things to different people.
Musicians and fans talk about what Life on Mars? means to them, and its lasting emotional impact.
Special programme made to mark Bowie's birthday on January 8th 1947 and commemorating his death on January 10th 2016.
And what does the question mark in the song's title mean?
With contributions from:
* Musician Dana Gillespie whose autobiography is Weren't Born A Man
* Bowie author Chris O'Leary
* Scientist Abigail Fraeman of NASA's Mars Mission*
* Artist Bridget Griggs
* Reverend Steve Stockman
* Screenwriter Ashley Pharoah (Life on Mars)
Producer: Maggie Ayre for BBC Audio Bristol
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in January 2021.
SAT 00:30 A Portrait Of... (b09d3r7x)
Juliet Stevenson
Follow artist Fiona Graham-Mackay as she paints a portrait of actor Juliet Stevenson.
What does it feel like to be painted, and then see yourself as someone else has drawn you?
It can be an emotional, transformative process for both the sitter and the artist.
In many ways a portrait painter is like a detective - looking for clues below the surface to capture the sitter's true likeness. In the hush of the studio, conversations meander in unexpected ways as painter and sitter find out about each other. And as we eavesdrop on their sittings, the revelations go beyond any ordinary interview.
Juliet Stevenson gained fame through her television and film work, such as Truly Madly Deeply, although she is first and foremost one of the most celebrated stage actresses of her generation. While Fiona sketches, we hear about Juliet's itinerant childhood, and taking acting notes from her friend and fellow actor Alan Rickman.
Fiona Graham-Mackay has painted hundreds of portraits, including Prince Michael of Kent, Seamus Heaney and Lord Carrington.
In all her sittings she has always been fascinated by her conversations with her subjects and continues to be amazed by how people open up in ways that surprise even themselves.

Spring in 2019 is not the riot of colour it used to be.
The honeybee is now officially extinct.
Farmer Sam Clark struggles to raise a crop worth a damn. But man has adapted.
Every spring an army of migrant workers, led by foreman Amra Walczak, descends on Sam's farm to pollinate by hand. It is a laborious process but it works.
This spring, however, science offers a new solution, Honeybots, tiny robots that are effectively crawling bees, and Sam's put his farm forward for a trial.
Once released, thousands of Honeybots course through the fields, pollinating the flowers in a fraction of the time it takes Amra and her team.
Their job done they return automatically to their hive chest. They are quick and efficient.
That evening, however, dead birds and mice are found in the fields the Honeybots have worked...

Julie Goodyear
Actress Julie Goodyear is castaway by Kirsty Young.
For a quarter of a century, Julie's Coronation Street TV character Bet Lynch set the gold plated standard for big, brassy, back chatting blondes. Behind the bar of the Rovers Return her bosom swathed in leopard-print and her head piled high with platinum curls she was Manchester's answer to Mae West.
Her MBE was awarded for her services to drama - and when she left the series in 1995, her departure pulled in 19 million viewers.
Yet whatever the scriptwriters came up with it was never as dramatic as the life she's lived beyond The Street.
Julie got pregnant at 17, her second husband abandoned her for their best man, and in 1979 she was diagnosed with cancer and told she'd a year to live. She's now married to her fourth husband.
She says, "If anyone should be interested in an epitaph for my life, I would like them to consider, 'At least she tried."

What a creature this "terrible lizard" must have been - big enough to scavenge the bodies of dead Tyrannosaurus and yet able to fly, probably in large numbers. And with a twist so typical of Sir David's writing, he brings this pterosaur to life at the very end.
Written and presented by David Attenborough.

SUN 22:00 Sarah Kendall: Australian Trilogy (b08gxx7p)
Series 1
Touchdown
"This show is a story, and our story starts at the end. My parents came to see one of my shows, and I would end this particular show by telling a story about the time I swore at a teacher..."
Starting with a short routine from her comedy club set, Sarah admits that like with most stand-up routines, it had a punchline manufactured for the sake of a joke.
Her mum challenges her to tell everyone what really happened the day she swore at that teacher and the result is this show.
Denied the quick fix of a fabricated punchline it is transformed into a full, honest, coming-of-age story that explores the clumsiness of adolescents, their awkward relationships, and painful need for friendship and love.
Multi-award winning storyteller Sarah Kendall brings her critically acclaimed trilogy of funny and moving, live shows to BBC Radio.
Taking her audience on a trip, Sarah gives a unique snapshot of small-town life in Australia in the early 90s.
At a time when most people were seeing Australians through the filter of 'Home and Away' and 'Neighbours', Sarah's shows present a darker underbelly to the stereotype of the sun-loving, happy-go-lucky Aussie teenager.
Comedic and tragic in equal measure, Sarah's tales of her teenage life blend intricate narratives with a cast of memorable characters, bringing events to life in front of your very ears.

Redacted by Hugh Costello
Twice a year, thousands of confidential state files are released to the press and public - files that detail the workings of the British government of 30 years ago.
If you want to know how Margaret Thatcher reacted to Islamic terror in Lebanon or how the Cabinet responded to the AIDS crisis then these are the documents you're waiting for.
But some of those files will be disfigured by a black marker pen - they'll be Redacted. Secrets too sensitive, even thirty years on, will remain in the shadows.
Jonathan is a 'sensitivity reviewer', the senior civil servant with the marker pen. It's normally a pretty dreary job, but just occasionally a long-forgotten document sparks his interest.
When Jonathan spots his wife's name at the bottom of an urgent memo to the Prime Minister, it lands him with the toughest moral dilemma of his life.

So along with Lucy Alexander (the only teenager in the village, willing to rebel against whatever you've got) she formed The Resistance - slightly to the annoyance of her parents Margaret and Richard.

MON 10:30 London Calling (b04pbqtg)
Aminatta Forna explains how the vivid descriptions of the wilderness in the works of Jack London had a crucial influence over her, telling also the story of his turbulent life.
Jack London created the mould for a particular kind of hard-living writer.
Long before Hemingway picked up his first whiskey bottle, London was off out on dangerous adventures to the Klondike Gold Rush, the front lines of the Sino-Russian war, and round the world on a boat that cost him millions and nearly cost him his life.
His chronic alcoholism finally proved his undoing. Before he did finally die at the age of 40, London managed to write some of the most popular stories ever to emerge from America, including 'White Fang' and 'Call of the Wild'.
It was these books that Aminatta Forna first immersed herself in as a child growing up in Sierra Leone, feeling the chill of snow-covered landscapes London described so vividly as she lay reading in the intense West African heat.
Now a writer herself, she shares many of London's passions, including wild animals and the natural landscape; it's no co-incidence that her own novel has at its heart a man who tracks wild dogs.
We accompany her to the forests of New England where she tracks coyotes and unpicks the influence London's writing has had on her. Along the way, she'll find out about his extraordinary life and the great success of his work.
Author Tobias Wolff tells us that London's influence on him was so powerful that in his teens he chose to be re-christened as Jack before his father forced him to change back to Tobias.
We also hear from George Monbiot about the appeal London has for him as a writer who so vividly depicts the rawness of the wilderness in contrast to the drudgery of civilisation. London said that he'd, 'rather be ashes than dust,' that he: 'would rather that my spark should burn out in a brilliant blaze than it should be stifled by dry-rot.'
As Aminatta Forna will explain, very few writers could claim to have burned so brightly.

Habda-Geddon
The hit Radio 4 series ‘Fags, Mags and Bags’ finally closes its shutters for the last time, after 11 series and 59 episodes of shop-based shenanigans and over-the-counter philosophy, courtesy of Ramesh Majhu, his trusty sidekick Dave, and his sons Sanjay and Alok.
In this special episode, recorded in front of a studio audience at the historic Oran Mor venue in Glasgow, Dave finally lands on his feet after selling a hugely valuable Moving Alan figure. However, Lenzie gold-diggers are never far away, causing friction in the shop.
This record-breaking show is the longest running TV or Radio sitcom to come out of Scotland, and the 10th longest running in BBC Radio 4 history.

TUE 09:30 Encounters with Victoria (m0004shj)
2. Poor Lady Flora
Lucy Worsley explores Queen Victoria's reign through significant encounters.
The new Queen's greatest weakness was her close political association with the powerful Whigs, and one of the ways their Tory enemies capitalised on this was through Lady Flora Hastings.
A young, unmarried, lady-in-waiting at Buckingham Palace, Lady Flora was observed in the spring of 1839 to have a swelling in the stomach.
Victoria, suspecting that she was 'privately married' (i.e. pregnant) insisted that Lady Flora be brutally examined by her own doctor.
The Tories stoked rumours that the young Queen's court, ruled over by the cynical Lord Melbourne, had become a scandalous, debauched place.
And when Lady Flora died of what turned out to be liver disease, Victoria was roundly criticised as heartless.
With this story of wombs and misunderstandings, the gloss had come off the young Queen's crown.
With the historian Kathryn Hughes.

TUE 10:30 When Women Wore the Trousers (b08spk82)
Laura Barton explores the little known story of a pioneering group of women who unknowingly challenged conventional notions of femininity and their working roles.
The Pit Brow Lasses worked within the collieries of 19th century Wigan, Lancashire. Their unique re-appropriation of men’s ‘breeches’ worn underneath hitched up skirts was originally adopted as a functional response to working within mines. These early adopters of trousers reached a similar degree of notoriety that street-style stars do today.
Women were liberated by their work in the munitions factories and on the land during both World Wars but there was a fear that these 'new men' would continue donning trousers and become too independent.
Coco Chanel famously appropriated sailors tops and trousers to create work-wear in its most elevated form and the fashion for utilitarian clothing continues to thrive today, as discussed by fashion designers Faye and Erica Toogood.
Chef Angela Harnett wears a uniform of a white shift and baggy trousers in her restaurant kitchen but it is a look that could be seen as fashionable in a different context.
With readings from the actor Maxine Peak, a discussion with Pit Brow Lass, Rita Culshaw about her choice of clothing in the pits and interviews with fashion curators Amy de la Haye and Fiona McKay and Wigan historian Alan Davies, we discover how women have worn trousers as a means of empowerment and the enduring appeal of work-wear in contemporary fashion.

How Elena Blew Hot and Cold
The one hundred stories which make up Giovanni Boccaccio’s humane and comic masterpiece come from all over the world. This Renaissance work is considered a landmark in the history of literature.
The stories are vividly reset by Boccaccio among the flourishing merchant classes in the cities of fourteenth-century Italy. But their witty, satirical, bawdy voice sounds utterly modern, and their subjects - love, fate, sex, religion, morality - are universal.
“Tricks which men play on women.”
Widowed Elena sleeps around, though she likes to keep up appearances. But when she snubs one man for the amusement of another, she picks the wrong victim.

As Pierre says, “I’m delighted to be given the chance to perform my own comedy on the BBC, the original source of my obsession with comedy as a child. It’s a chance to bring my stand up to a hypothetically grateful nation.”

3. A Wounded Welshman
Lucy Worsley explores Queen Victoria's reign through significant encounters.
Welshman Thomas Phillips, Mayor of Newport, was not the usual sort of person who got invited to dinner at Windsor Castle, a point that Victoria's courtiers made very clear.
But in 1839, he was invited to the castle to receive a knighthood.
A month earlier, he’d been wounded while helping to put down an armed rebellion of 10,000 Chartist sympathisers. Many of them coal miners, they’d marched on Newport, furious about the recent rejection of the People's Charter calling for Universal Suffrage.
This was the last large-scale armed uprising against the state in mainland Britain, and it became a massacre as hidden troops opened fire. Phillips, the Mayor, was wounded in the fracas and now became lionised for quelling the revolution.
After receiving his knighthood at Windsor Castle, and after a good deal of muttering from her courtiers, he did indeed sit down to eat with the Queen. It was her way of dealing with the demands - to which she would lifelong be deaf - for widening the electoral roll.
But the Chartists so spooked the Royals that they fled for the 'safety' of the Isle of Wight.

The Battle of the Brows
In January 1923, one of the earliest outside broadcasts from the newly formed BBC took place - The Magic Flute performed at Covent Garden by The British National Opera Company. The programme was a statement of intent by the early BBC as broadcasting was a revolutionary way in which culture could be brought to many people through their new wireless sets. Ever since its foundation 100 years ago, the BBC has been an arena in which debates have played out about what sorts of culture the British people want or need.
In 1932, a BBC broadcast by the writer J.B. Priestley brought The Battle of the Brows to the airwaves. With a combative, sometimes abrupt, tone, Priestley's talk To A Highbrow poked fun at the tastes and manners of the cultural elite. It provoked a furious response from Virginia Woolf, one of Priestley’s targets - and an unapologetic ‘highbrow’. Woolf’s impassioned response revealed the depth of feeling around the question of what was worth valuing in culture. Radio, cheaper printing techniques and ongoing education reforms had expanded opportunities for cultural access. The mudslinging represented far wider anxieties about modern Britain.
The BBC further entered the fray with the launch of the Third Programme in 1946, established to build on the BBC's founding mission to 'forge a link between the dispersed and separate listeners and the symbolic heartland of national life'. Yet it was selective from the start and, for some, the Third Programme was an intellectual and cultural haven. For others, it was 'highbrow' trendsetting of the worst kind.
In The Battle of the Brows, which marks a century of the BBC, Philip Hensher delves into the archival history of a culture war that swept the broadcaster up in its wake. He explores how we rank and value culture and how debates over 'high' and 'low' culture have played out at the BBC and beyond, since the 1920s.

THU 09:00 What's the Story, Ashley Storrie? (m002pfhq)
Series 3
1. The Best/Worst of Times
Despite growing up with undiagnosed autism, in a family of gangsters where police raids uncovering guns under the floorboards was normal, and with her teenage years spent guiding the career of her controversial comedian mother, Janey Godley, whilst caring for her depressed autistic father - Ashley has just had the most surreal, dramatic, tragic… and successful year of her life.
With a gift for comedy and performance since early childhood when she would entertain the patrons of her parent’s pub with musical parodies and hilarious impressions, plus a passion for writing scripts and stories, Ashley’s dream job was always in the magical world of TV with all its escapism, justice and happy endings.
Despite making a name for herself in the world of comedy as an acclaimed stand-up in her own right, she’d spent most of her life until now by her mum’s side - supporting her on tour, livestreams, podcasts and everything she did, personally and professionally.
But the universe has a twisted sense of humour, and just as Ashley finally gets her big break, Janey is diagnosed with terminal cancer.
In this episode, we get a peek inside the brilliant but unhinged autistic brain of our self-identifying “adult perma-child” protagonist and, with the help of some of the other characters that live inside her mind, hear the unbelievable story of how this profound, tragicomedy began.

THU 09:30 Encounters with Victoria (m0004sfj)
4. The Governess
Lucy Worsley explores Queen Victoria's reign through significant encounters.
An important event is missing from Victoria's diary entry for 23 September 1842.
It was actually only her mother's diary which tells us that this was the day that Victoria’s old governess, Louise Lehzen, slipped away from Windsor Castle without saying goodbye.
Lehzen, who had been a second mother to Victoria, and who instilled her with her stiff - possibly inflexible - standards, had fallen out with the increasingly powerful Prince Albert, who’d taken over the running of the Royal Household.
'I could pardon wickedness in a Queen but not weakness’, Lehzen had told her princess, and now her former pupil now showed no weakness in dismissing her former governess without a word.
A last, sad glimpse of Lehzen comes from the years of her retirement to her native Germany, where she compiled a scrapbook of memories of the girl she loved. Lehzen even went to the station to wave as Victoria steamed past on a royal tour. The train did not stop.

THU 10:30 Nightingales of India (b0210pl8)
This is the remarkable story of two iconic sisters revered by Bollywood fans the world over.
Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle are two of the finest and most prolific female vocalists in the business. They are playback singers extraordinaire - providing the singing voices of generations of film actresses.
Yasmin Alibhai-Brown tells the story of the sisters from a humble background which parallels the story of Bollywood and of India itself.
Known as the 'nightingales of India', they have forged careers spanning more than six decades. One or the other of them is rarely out of the record books as the most recorded artist in the world.
The sisters were born into a theatrical family. Lata, the older of the two, who is interviewed in the programme was left, at the age of 13, to support the whole family. After much hardship she got her big break and, just as the Hindi film industry was taking off at the end of the thirties, a star was born.
Now in her 80s, despite her fame and fortune, she leads a quiet, simple life and remains unmarried. Her younger sister Asha, now in her 80s too, was far from shy and retiring. Teenage elopement, affairs and divorce make her the dangerous half of the duo. She too made it to the top.
Everyone who is anyone in Bollywood has worked with or is familiar with the sisters' work. And the programme includes a rare interview with Lata Mangeshkar herself.
Please note: at one point, the presenter refers to Lata and Asha's audience as being in "south east asia". This should be an audience in "south asia".

FRI 09:30 Encounters with Victoria (m0004sg1)
5. American Idols
Lucy Worsley, Chief Curator at the Historic Royal Palaces, explores Queen Victoria's reign through significant encounters.
Victoria was a global celebrity, adept at exploiting her image. And she learned a few tricks from some of the extraordinarily popular entertainers who proved that her Majesty was often very amused indeed.
In 1844, the diminutive American performer whose stage name was Tom Thumb, made a side-splitting appearance at Buckingham Palace.
In a parody of court etiquette, he said 'much obliged Mama' when he shook the Queen's hand, and fought her dog with a sword.
Like Victoria herself, Tom Thumb’s manager, showman P.T. Barnum, knew the power of brand management. Having Tom Thumb to the palace made the queen look human, while Barnum got a lucrative Royal endorsement.
By 1887, the biggest show in town was again American: Buffalo Bill's Wild West: a whooping, tootin', gun-firing maelstrom of action, and Victoria commanded a private performance. It was thrilling and dangerous, but also a celebration of the guns which would allow Western Europe to ‘conquer’ the unknown.
Tom Thumb and Buffalo Bill gave the queen who’d become an empress both entertainment – and education.
With historian Helen Davies, V&A curator and writer Nicholas Rankin.

Chervona Kalyna
Powerful stories linked to this beautiful and stirring Ukrainian folk song which inspired Pink Floyd to reform so they could release their own version, 'Hey Hey Rise Up', alongside Andriy Khlyvnyuk of Boombox.
Chervona Kalyna is a clarion call with roots stretching back to 17th century Cossack history; as meaningful now as then, this episode of Soul Music reflects how music can be a unifying force in the most dangerous and difficult of times.
Anti-Russian, it was banned prior to Ukrainian independence in 1991 with one of its lyrics calling to 'free our brothers Ukrainian from Muscovites shackles'. Its full title 'Oi u luzi chervona kalyna' translates as 'Oh the red viburnum in the meadow': red viburnum is a common plant in Ukraine and in the song it's a metaphor for the country itself.
Telling their stories on Soul Music: Taras Ratushnyy, journalist turned soldier, discusses his beloved son, Roman, and the heroic role he played in Ukrainian society both before and after the war began.
Elizaveta Izmalkova is a young Ukrainian singer who now lives in Lithuania. She performed Chervona Kalyna as part of a flash-mob co-organised by Egle Plytnikaite who describes why she and other Lithuanians wanted to demonstrate their support for Ukraine.
Nadia Morykvas wrote a book about the cultural polymath, Stepan Charnetskyi, who - in the early 20th century - adapted Chervona Kalyna for one of his plays. (Volodymyr Oleyko translates for Nadia Morykvas).
Andrij Halushka is a Ukrainian who now lives in London. He describes how his family history, down multiple generations, connects with the song.
Julia and Kateryna came to England under the 'Homes for Ukraine' scheme when the war began. Under the name 'Dvi Doli' they raise money for Ukraine by staging concerts where they perform traditional songs on the Bandura.
Taras Filenko is a pianist and ethno-musicologist. Originally from Zaporizhzhia in Ukraine, he now lives in Pennsylvania, USA. He discusses the musicology of the song, and recalls a neighbour from his childhood who was imprisoned for performing Chervona Kalyna in the 1940s.
Myroslava Hartmond is a British-Ukrainian cultural diplomacy expert. She explains how the current popularity of Chervona Kalyna began when Andriy Khlyvnyuk, the lead singer of Boombox, recorded an a capella version in the centre of Kyiv. This inspired Pink Floyd to collaborate with Khlyvnyuk and release their own version.
Please scroll down to the 'Related Links' box on the Radio 4 Soul Music webpage for further information about some of the interviewees and the different versions of the song used in the programme. The programme image is of Taras and Roman Ratushnyy.

FRI 10:30 Good In Vestments (b011p7sr)
Amidst the rustle of silk, the drape of damask and the questions over whether the green or the red lining is better, the Reverend Richard Coles explores the ancient tradition of ecclesiastical vestment-wearing.
At a Royal Wedding, all eyes may have been on Catherine Middleton's dress, but the magnificent vestments worn by the Archbishop of Canterbury also caught peoples' attention.
Why do clergy still wear these clothes, who designs and sews them and has the emergence of women priests made any difference to who's wearing what in church?
In this programme, Rev Richard Coles talks to various members of the clergy and historians to find out more about the traditions and developments in the way vestments have been adopted by Anglicans and Catholics.
He goes to one of London's oldest vestment companies to meet priests being measured for their new clothes, and to talk to the seamstresses who stitch the chasubles and stoles by hand.
As well as hearing about the traditional designs, he investigates how some clergy are seeking out new pictures and patterns - and asks what that says about the role of vestments in an increasingly secular society.
