SAT 07:30 Wintering by Katherine May (Omnibus) (m00140n9)
‘Some winters happen in the sun,’ writes Katherine May. ‘This particular one began on a blazing day in early September, a week before my 40th birthday.’

When her husband becomes dangerously ill, it coincides with a moment in May’s life when she is facing professional and personal stress and an uncertain future, and it ushers in a period of what she calls ‘wintering’.

‘Everybody winters at one time or another; some winter over and over again,’ she explains. ‘Winter is a season in the cold, a fallow period in life when you’re cut off from the world, feeling rejected, sidelined, blocked from progress.’

Described by The Observer’s reviewer as ‘a reading cure’ and ‘a tale of hard-won celebration’, May's book is an honest, reflective, sometimes humorous account of her struggle to deal with her own bad times.

She considers the healing power of rest and retreat and the consolations of nature, exploring the many ways in which we experience winter, both seasonal and personal, and offering some strategies for weathering the dark times in the year and our own lives.

Omnibus of five parts read by Melody Grove

Abridged and produced by Sara Davies

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in December 2021.

Hadrian’s Beard

So keen that he was determined to build a wall across Britain, sea to sea, just north of the great fort Vindolanda.

That physical legacy is still in part visible between Northumberland and Cumbria to this day.

This comedy play looks under the skin of the Emperor who broke with various traditions, not least growing a beard where all Roman leaders were previously clean-shaven; and his deep love of all things Grecian.

All does not go according to plan when he arrives and it seems that this brave 'soldier' is more troubled than first impressions suggest.

Jilly Cooper

BBC Radio 4 Extra remembers some of the desert island castaways who we lost in 2025.

Writer Jilly Cooper is castaway by Kirsty Young.

Her long writing career spans newspaper columns for the Sunday Times and the Mail on Sunday, non-fiction books on class, marriage and animals in war and novels that sell in their millions. Her romances set in the late seventies - including 'Bella', 'Harriett', 'Imogen' and 'Prudence' – were followed by 'Riders' in 1985, the first of her Rutshire Chronicles. Set mainly in the Cotswolds, they are racy and raunchy page-turners exposing the scandalous – and often hilarious - goings on among the British upper classes.

Born in 1937 in Essex, she was brought up in Yorkshire and enjoyed a happy childhood surrounded by dogs and ponies. At boarding school she earned the nickname, ‘the unholy terror’ and having failed to get into Oxford and being sacked from a number of jobs for her inability to type, she turned to journalism before publishing her first book, 'How to Stay Married' in 1969.

She married Leo Cooper in 1961 and, unable to have children of their own, the couple adopted Felix and Emily in the late 1960s. The couple were married for 52 years before his death in 2013.

Jilly Cooper died on 5th October 2025 aged 88.

Chimps

They say, David Attenborough reports, that we share more of our genes with chimpanzees than any other species alive today.

It was this proximity of Homo Sapiens to the chimpanzee which motivated him even more to film behaviour never before seen.

It had been known for some time that chimps hunt monkeys for meat, but it would be a first to film it for TV audiences.

To film such a hunt required days of waiting and tracking a troop through the Equatorial African forest - and when the hunt came and was over it changed Sir David Attenborough's view of chimps and their importance to us, forever.

Written and presented by David Attenborough.

Producer: Julian Hector

House Fly and Soprano Pipistrelle Bat

Lee Mack and Pam Ferris star as an annoying house fly and a warm-hearted soprano pipistrelle bat as they reveal the truth about life in a draughty old attic in a house in Amersham.

Written and introduced by Lynne Truss.

House Fly ..... Lee Mack
Soprano Pipstrelle Bat ..... Pam Ferris

The House Fly loves life. "The best bit is the buzzing".

He loves the aerobatics, dodging the flypapers in the attic and "... my favourite manoeuvre, settling on the ceiling. It is unbelievably brilliant" He loves to buzz. But he also loves, what to humans, is a disgusting way of life. He loves to walk around on filth and to poo everywhere and to spread disease "And listen, we don't mind! Not at all. It's the least we can do".

He would love to spread more diseases and takes great joy in telling us just exactly how he does this ... perhaps best not to listen if you're eating!

The Soprano Pipistrelle Bat is a very different creature; a tiny bat with a huge and loving heart.

She is nine years old and has given birth to a single pup each year. Her newest pup, Jethro, is her darling; "... such a lovely little face. Chestnut fur. Perfect little ears. He smells like chicken flavour crisps. Ooh, I could eat him." He is six weeks old and weaning - proudly catching insects for himself; and this is always a poignant time for this mother-bat, where pride and sadness mingle.

The main concern with Jethro, she finds, is that he can't seem to grasp the idea of torpor, "Oh don't mum. Don't go torpid. It's like you're dying", but as she knows "torpor is nothing to be scared of... torpor is your friend".

Series 3

I Was Philip K Dick's Reluctant Host

Andrew McGibbon analyses great artists at a significant time in their careers, but from the perspective of someone who worked for them, inspired them, employed them or even did their job for them while no one was looking.

Michael Walsh - a journalist and respected film reviewer for The Province, a leading Vancouver newspaper - talks about the time he came to the aid of the author of Minority Report, Blade Runner, Total Recall and Man in the High Castle, who he met at a convention in 1972.

Discovering that Dick has sold his house in California and was planning to stay in Canada, Michael invited Phillip to stay with him and his wife Susan at their home in Vancouver.

It would go on to be one of the most challenging experiences of Michael's life, as drug dependency, unwanted advances on Michael's wife and unpredictable mood swings made the period something of an emotional rollercoaster for the wary hosts - but also fascinating insight into one of sci-fi's greatest ever visionaries.

TUE 10:30 Tunes from the Trash (p04s5d7n)
Just outside the Paraguayan capital city of Asuncion lies the town of Cateura.

It's an impoverished settlement ranged along the banks of a stinking, polluted river, in the shadow of a giant landfill site.

Many of its inhabitants scratch a living by reclaiming objects from the endless ocean of garbage to sell. Recycling of a kind.

But for the last ten years the residents of Cateura have been part of a recycling project of a much sweeter sort.

La Orquesta de Instrumentos Reciclados de Cateura - the Recycled Orchestra of Cateura - use materials from the landfill site to create musical instruments.

An oil drum for a cello, a pipe for a flute, a tin can for a guitar. They've toured the world and recorded with the likes of Metallica.

As the Orchestra leader Favio Chávez says, "The world sends us garbage. We send back music."

The BBC's South America Correspondent Wyre Davies visits Cateura, meets Favio Chávez and other members of the Recycled Orchestra and learns how trash, and lives, are being transformed by music.

To Barbra

Dame Maureen Lipman presents a personal tribute to Barbra Streisand, to mark the Hollywood legend's 80th birthday on 24th April 2022.

Recipient of two Oscars, 10 Grammys, 5 Emmys, and 9 Golden Globes. Streisand's also the top-selling female album artist of all time in the USA.

For Maureen, it's an admiration that goes back six decades. As a young girl growing up in Hull, she first set eyes on the Brooklyn teeenager in her brother's Time Magazine. Barbra had just made a big splash on Broadway in the musical I Can Get It For You Wholesale and Maureen felt her rebellious chutzpah from 3000 miles away.

Once Streisand started releasing albums in 1963, they formed the soundtrack to Maureen's life. Fast forward to 1983, and you can imagine the thrill when Maureen's late husband, playwright Jack Rosenthal, was hired as a writer on Barbra's directorial debut, the movie Yentl.

Using BBC interviews, we trace Barbra's career from her Brooklyn childhood to Maureen's eventual meeting with the superstar in London during production of Yentl.

Streisand was a revolutionary.

Defying the conventions of the early 60s with her thrift store fashions, brazen Jewishness, and kooky persona. In Hollywood, she challenged rigid beauty ideals by refusing to get her nose fixed. As one of the top box office stars of the 70s, she became a powerful player in an industry ruled predominantly by men.

But there was, of course, enormous pushback and criticism from the start. An auteur at heart, It took 15 years, from reading the short story Yentl the Yeshiva Boy by Isaac Bashevis Singer, before she was able to produce, direct, co-write and star in her movie adaptation.

Contributors include:

* Acting coach Alan Miller, who taught Streisand as a teenager
* Historian David Kaufman, author of Jewhooing the Sixties: American Celebrity and Jewish Identity
* Rabbi Laura Geller of Temple Emanuel Beverly Hills
* LA Times columnist Patt Morrison
* Dr Julie Hubbert, Professor of Music History at the University of South Carolina.

Puckoon by Spike Milligan

A madcap satire on the division of Ireland, by the godfather of British comedy, Spike Milligan.

In 1924, the Boundary Commission is tasked with creating the new official division between Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic.

Through incompetence, dereliction of duty and sheer perversity, the border ends up running through the middle of the small town of Puckoon.

Houses are divided from outhouses, husbands separated from wives, bars are cut off from their patrons, churches sundered from graveyards. And in the middle of it all is poor Dan Milligan, our feckless protagonist (played by Ed Byrne), who is taunted and manipulated by everyone to try and make some sense of this mess.

The division of the church from its cemetery makes it difficult for the Irish residents to bury their dead.

The corpse of Dan Doonan is taken to a photographer to get his picture taken, as part of the formalities of getting his passport renewed.

THU 08:00 Ability (b087p7m6)
Pilot

Lost Voice Guy (real name Lee Ridley) won the BBC Radio Stand-Up Comedy Award in 2014. He is a funny guy. He also has cerebral palsy and can only speak via a computer. Ability uses Lee's experiences of coping with this disability and weaves them into a sitcom.

It's based around Matt, who's leaving home for the first time to move in with Jess, his best friend from school. Matt's parents are worried, particularly his dad - they have always done everything for him. But Matt is determined, even though his new carer, Bob, is not all he should be. Bob is new to the role, and although willing, he somehow manages to spend more time dealing weed and flogging knocked off TVs than cooking Matt's tea. But he treats Matt like an equal, and not all his previous carers have done that, and so the two form a bond.

A bond that could lead Matt into an awful lot of trouble. Especially as Matt has never been above exploiting his circumstances if the situation arises - he's always known he could get away with murder (although he's never actually tried that of course.) But who would suspect the disabled guy? Could Matt and Bob become the new Del boy and Rodney? And if so, which is which?

THU 10:30 In Search of the Villa Noel Fleuri (b00x44dz)
American thriller and travel-writer, David Dodge (1910-1974), is best known for his 1952 novel To Catch A Thief.

Alfred Hitchcock turned it into an iconic film three years later.

Unusually for Hitchcock, half was shot on location, and the Riviera is as much a star as Grace Kelly (in her final film - she met Prince Rainier during a publicity shoot and became Princess of Monaco) and Cary Grant (whom Hitchcock tempted out of retirement with this script).

Dodge's book was inspired by a real incident when he briefly became the number 1 suspect for a daring cat-burglary at his rich neighbour's villa.

It's the story of John Robie, a reformed cat-burglar who must prove his innocence by catching the thief who is duplicating his methods. His pursuit leads him into the arms of beautiful American heiress Francie Stevens.

Jean Buchanan tells the story and attempts to locate the Villa Noel Fleuri, where these dramatic events ultimately resulted in one of Hollywood's best-loved films.

In the course of her quest Jean visits Golfe Juan, the fishing port between Canne and Nice where the Dodges arrived in France.

Given a tour of the Carlton hotel in Cannes by the Chef-Concierge, Stephane Fanciulli, Jean is shown the very room where Grant and Kelly watched - and made - fireworks. She also makes a notable discovery in the Nice-Matin newspaper archives and attempts to consolidate her finds on maps held in Vallauris.

Jean is assisted by:

* Randal Brandt of the Bancroft Library at the University of California Berkeley
* Dirk Dominic, an expert in To Catch A Thief locations
* Paul Gambaccini lends his expertise in film

Producer: Marya Burgess

Then Brian Gulliver arrived and meant that our hero could be lost in a fictional world without the need for any sci-fi.
