My Favourite Things

"Raindrops on Roses and Whiskers on Kittens".

Guests from around the world share their special memories of The Sound of Music classic 'My Favourite Things'.

Written by Rodgers and Hammerstein in 1959, this deceptively simple song has travelled the globe to comfort and enthral children the world over.

Iranian Astronaut and philanthropist Anousheh Ansari's first encounter with this musical classic was in her native language of Farsi. It's a melody she held dear to her during years of unrest through the Iranian revolution and the war that was to follow. It's also the song that travelled with her as she realised her childhood dream of exploring outer space.

For vocal coach Heather Mair Thomas 'My Favourite Things' evokes memories of a happy Cornish childhood, growing up with her musical family. It has also become a reminder to always look for the good in life - come what may.

Meanwhile Jazz musician David Lieberman takes us on a journey through the 1960's New York club scene to the night where an encounter with John Coltrane's version of 'My Favourite Things' changed his life forever.

Plus Sound of Music fan Emma Poulton-White relives her very special wedding day that was topped off with a 'copper kettle' .

Featuring Tom Santopietro author of 'The Sound of Music Story'.

Producer: Nicola Humphries

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in May 2017.

SAT 07:30 Pharaohs of The Sun by Guy de la Bedoyere (Omnibus) (m002l4gs)
3,500 years ago, Egypt entered the 18th Dynasty with a succession of kings and queens who were obsessed with wealth and power. They spent Egypt’s money on grandiose temple building projects at Karnak and Luxor on the River Nile, and extravagant tombs designed to bear witness to their magnificence.

The wealth of the kings came at a huge cost to the people of Egypt whose needs were not uppermost in the rulers' concerns. Neighbouring countries were held to ransom by the power of the Egyptian army and the wealth gained in response was used solely for the kings’ purposes.

The dynasty included the female ruler, Hatshepsut, the religious reformer Akhenaten and his queen Nefertiti, and the most famous yet short lived of them all, the boy king Tutankhamun. Although his reign was insignificant the splendour of his tomb has been in the spotlight ever since it was discovered by Howard Carter in November 1922.

SAT 10:00 The Real Comedy Controllers: The Things That Made Us Laugh (m00147qf)
Origins

1. It's That Man Again

Instead of celebrity Comedy Controllers choosing their favourites, it’s the turn of those who, in their own ways, must take the blame for many of the shows heard on BBC Radio 4 Extra.

Between them, Paul Jackson, Beryl Vertue, John Lloyd and Jimmy Mulville have well over a 150 years of gut-busting, side-aching woofers, gags and - let's be honest - the occasional horrific mistimed silence.

In front of an audience in London's iconic BBC Radio Theatre in Broadcasting House - the home of British Radio comedy - they reveal what they do, why they do it and what makes them laugh.

In the first of three programmes, they look back to the wartime stars of Variety and the entertainers, the men and women (though largely men) who entertained us through the dark days of conflict and the drab times of austerity and rationing.

Featuring:

‘ITMA’ - It's That Man Again (Victory Edition).
Tommy Handley's gang celebrate victory in Europe, as broadcast on 10th May 1945.

Plus extracts from:

‘Hi Gang’
Peter Sellers’ performance of ‘Balham, Gateway to the South’.

Series Producers: Paul Kobrak and Dixi Stewart

MON 10:30 The Body Electric (b08v8hbl)
Cathy FitzGerald considers what we can learn about the body by experiencing it through the senses of artists.

Imagine you're experiencing the human body for the very first time.

Look at the spiderweb of lines on a palm, how delicate the skin is at the pulse-point on the wrist. Feel the squishy warmth of an ear lobe, the dry honeycomb of elbow-skin. What does it sound like when a hand brushes a cheek? Do the shoulders smell different to the back?

We're surrounded by images of the body - and yet perhaps less in touch with our own fleshy selves than at any time in history.

Many of us know our bodies only in terms of illness or deficiency - how they let us down.

Cathy explores the surface of the body as a terra incognita in the company of three artists, who each work with a different sense:

* Sound-artist Matthew Herbert (who creates an 'audio-nude')
* Wolfgang Georgsdorf who works with smell
* Scottish painter Alison Watt

She also attends a life-drawing class at the National Gallery, led by drawing tutor and art-historian Karly Allen.

Produced and presented by Cathy FitzGerald.

A White Stiletto production for BBC Radio 4, first broadcast in June 2017.

TUE 09:30 Empire of Tea (m001tbgz)
7. Punjabi Cha and Masala Chai

Like Britain (and several other countries), India sees tea as its definitive national drink.

But as Sathnam Sanghera discovers, mass market Indian tea culture was seeded, in large part, by its coloniser.

With a trip to a chai stall in London and a chat with the historian Romita Ray, Sathnam charts the development of tea in India from both indigenous and imperial origins.

Amid its regional diversity, how did it become India’s national drink?

TUE 10:30 A Mortal Work of Art (b039pdtg)
As tattoos become ever more visible on the bodies of the British public, Mary Anne Hobbs explores the meeting point between the world of fine art and the world of tattoos.

She talks to Spider Webb, the tattoo artist credited with creating the first conceptual art tattoo and the artist Sandra Ann Vita Minchin who is in the process of getting a 17th century Dutch masterpiece tattooed on her back.

She visits art historian Dr Matt Lodder who is writing what will be the first art history text on tattooing. She meets Alex Binnie, proprietor of Into You Tattoo - one of the first tattoo parlours in the UK to openly fuse fine art and tattooing.

Writer Shelley Jackson caught public attention worldwide when she launched her Skin project in 2003.

Skin was to be a short story which would exist as over 2,000 words individually tattooed on volunteers. These participants would become the words in Shelley's story. Mary Anne talks to Shelley about the inspiration behind Skin and she meets one of Shelley's words - the novelist and short story connoisseur Nicholas Royle.

Mary Anne discusses how fine art is influencing and being influenced by tattooing with Sion Smith, editor of Skin Deep, the UK's best-selling Tattoo Magazine and Trent Aitken-Smith editor of Tattoo Master. She talks to one of the new generation of tatto artists, Amanda Wachob, who sees skin as the ultimate canvas.

A Mortal Work of Art explores a practice often portrayed as a marginal pursuit, but that is most definitely mainstream today, and asks why the art establishment has taken such a long time to embrace it.

8. One For Each Person and None For The Pot

By the 1930s, tea-drinking had become such an integral part of British life that maintaining supplies during the war was a government priority.

It was seen as an essential morale booster on both the home front and the fighting front. Urging restraint, the food minister Lord Woolton advised people to allocate one tea bag for each person 'and none for the pot' when brewing up.

James Bulgin of the Imperial War Museum and historian Erika Rappaport tell Sathnam Sanghera about the measures taken to protect supply, safeguard stocks and discourage wastage.

Just how important was imperial tea to the British war effort?

The Origins of The Metaverse

When Facebook changed its name to Meta at the end of 2021, the word 'metaverse' got everywhere.

But the idea of a virtual reality, fully immersed life, spent in a structured, created, illusory perceived universe has its roots a lot deeper than that, even before the writer Neal Stephenson coined the term in his 1992 novel Snow Crash.

Pygmalion's Spectacles, a science fiction novella by Stanley G Weinbaum has hints of the idea.

Perhaps it goes back to the beginnings of ancient philosophical traditions. It’s hard to nail down, so ubiquitous is the idea. Indeed, 'world building' is in many ways just what film-makers, game writers, authors and storytellers have been doing for centuries.

More recently, it has even become fashionable to speculate that the universe as we perceive it now is actually some kind of simulation, running in some sort of super-real computing medium outside what we can sense.

On top of the growing sophistication and growing numbers of VR-headsets and AR devices, immersive games today and in the near future will involve artificial characters that try their best to emulate real people in their interactions with players.

So, how might you convince one of them that their universe is a synthetic creation, merely the latest in a long continuum of human technological creativity?

And why would that matter anyway?

David Chalmers

With Colin Salmon and Clare Reeves, including music Cyrus Shahrad.

Nessun Dorma

Singer Jon Christos watched the Italia 90 World Cup with his Dad.

He says Pavarotti's live performance of 'Nessun Dorma' at the tournament was the only time he ever saw his Dad cry.

Pavarotti's daughter Cristina talks about the impact this aria had on her father's life and how his 1990 performance inspired many people to become interested in opera.

Beatrice Venezia conducted 'Nessun Dorma' at the 'Puccini day' she created in Lucca in 2018. She also conducted Andrea Bocelli's performance of the aria at the Platinum Jubilee celebrations in June 2022.

Sir Bobby Robson's son Mark was at Italia 90 and talks about the pride he felt seeing his Dad lining up with the England team for the semi-final against West Germany. It was also sung at Sir Bobby's memorial service in Durham Cathedral.

Broadcaster and author Alexandra Wilson explains that the opera Turandot is the story of Prince Calaf, who falls in love with the titular Princess. In 'Nessun Dorma' Calaf expresses his determination to win her hand, ending with that extraordinary refrain 'Vincerò!' or 'I will win'.

Paul Potts won 'Britain's Got Talent' in 2007 performing 'Nessun Dorma' and recalls singing it to over a million people at the Brandenburg Gate on New Year's Eve in 2010.

When Italy locked down in March 2020, hairdresser Piero d'Angelico played 'Nessun Dorma' from a five-story window above Cambridge railway station to show solidarity with his home country and the Italian community in his adopted city.

Voiceovers by Mike Ingham and Rebecca Braccialarghe.
